These frequencies have been adopted into the bandplans of each IARU region to be a focus for emergency communications in their areas. They are not absolute frequencies but instead are centres of activity and emergency communications may be found around 20kHz from these centres. Some countries may maintain other emergency frequencies in their own bandplans due to local requirements, QRM etc

The four-page _APRS Symbol Table_ (Revision H) systematically lists 96 primary and 96 alternate Automatic Packet Reporting System symbols, each with its corresponding GPSxyz Index, a concise description, and a visual icon. For instance, the primary symbol '!' (GPSxyz BB) represents a "Police Stn," while its alternate counterpart '!' (GPSxyz OB) signifies "Emergency." The resource clearly delineates how specific ASCII characters map to distinct graphical representations on APRS displays, crucial for accurate situational awareness. It presents a direct, tabular format, making it an efficient reference for operators needing to quickly identify or interpret the myriad of icons used in APRS mapping applications. The table covers a broad spectrum of common APRS entities, from fixed stations like "Digi" (#) and "Home" (-) to mobile units such as "Car" (>) and "Plane sm" ('), alongside various weather phenomena and emergency services. Compiled by VK4KTP and featuring images by WA8LMF, the document serves as a definitive guide for understanding the visual language of APRS. It is particularly useful for those involved in tactical communications, public service events, or general APRS tracking, ensuring consistent symbol interpretation across different platforms and user interfaces.

Understanding radio wave propagation is fundamental for effective HF communication, and this guide from the Galway Radio Club elucidates the principles behind _Near Vertical Incidence Skywave_ (NVIS) operation. It begins by contrasting NVIS with line-of-sight and surface wave propagation, highlighting its utility for reliable regional coverage, particularly in challenging terrains or within the skip zone. The document explains how NVIS leverages high-angle radiation, refracting signals from the ionosphere to return to Earth within a circular region, typically up to **650 km** (400 miles) from the transmitter. The guide delves into critical factors influencing NVIS, such as the _critical frequency_ (Fo) and the Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF), emphasizing their dependence on solar activity, time of day, and season. It provides practical advice on frequency selection, noting that 40 meters is often the highest daytime NVIS band, with 60 meters and 80 meters favored as darkness falls. The author, EI5DD, suggests using an ionogram for real-time propagation data, considering it more reliable than generic ham-clocks. Antenna considerations are also covered, recommending dipoles, inverted vees, or phased dipoles positioned 0.1 to 0.25 wavelengths above ground for optimal high-angle radiation. The document mentions mobile NVIS setups, including military configurations and commercial options like the Barrett Communications roof-rack antenna, which can cost around **£2000.00**. It concludes by reinforcing NVIS as an essential technique for national emergency communications, with 5 MHz (60m) and 80 meters being primary bands for daytime and nighttime operations, respectively.

Examines the historical context of amateur radio, specifically focusing on Guglielmo Marconi's pioneering wireless transatlantic signal reception at Signal Hill, Newfoundland, in 1901. It describes the operation of a contemporary remote radio station at Signal Hill, utilizing the special event call sign _VD1M_ issued by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. The content recounts a specific contact from Signal Hill, reporting a signal strength of 5 by 9 to a station in Sarnia, Ontario, which received the signal at 3 by 3. The narrative also introduces the concept of 'Marconi chasers' who endeavor to replicate historical transmission methods. Further, the resource discusses general amateur radio operating procedures, the evolution of the hobby, and its critical role in emergency communications, citing examples from hurricanes _Irma_ and _Maria_ in 2017 and the conflict in Ukraine in 2022.

Monitoring public safety communications, particularly fire department dispatch, presents a unique challenge as agencies increasingly move towards encrypted systems. This Broadcastify feed, originating from a _BCD396XT_ scanner situated in northern San Diego City, provides real-time audio for the San Diego City Fire Department. While it previously included police dispatch, those transmissions are now fully encrypted, a common trend impacting scanner enthusiasts and emergency services observers alike. The setup utilizes a Windows server running _Freescan_ and _RemoteFS_ for remote control, ensuring consistent operation and clear audio via a ground loop isolator. With a peak of 8,785 listeners in the last 24 hours, the feed demonstrates significant interest in local emergency traffic. Alpha tags, indicating the current channel, are generally available for premium users, enhancing situational awareness for listeners. Feed archives are maintained in 30-minute segments, allowing for review of past incidents and operational patterns, a valuable feature for those studying emergency response or simply keeping informed about local events.
