The Resonant Feedline Dipole (RFD) HF antenna design utilizes a single piece of coaxial cable and a stranded wire section, forming a 1/4-wavelength radiator. This configuration, based on a 1997 ARRL Handbook design (page 20.17), functions by RF traveling on the inside of the coax shield and returning on the outside, creating the second half of the dipole. A choke wound into the feedline prevents RF current from flowing back down the feedline. Construction details include using RG-58a/u coax for a 75m version, with a 1/4-wavelength section of stranded wire soldered to the center conductor. The document provides choke dimensions for RG-213, RG-8, and RG-58 coax across 3.5 MHz to 28 MHz, specifying cable length and number of turns. Dipole dimensions are also tabulated for frequencies from 3.6 MHz to 28.4 MHz, listing overall length and individual leg lengths. Field tests included deployment near Bryson City at 5 feet off the ground and as a sloper during WCARS Field Day in Asheville, yielding successful local and regional contacts.

Displays amateur radio grid squares worked from third-party logging programs, providing a visual representation of contacts on a world map. This Windows application uses colors to differentiate up to four bands concurrently, calculating the total number of grid squares worked per band. It reads plain-text log files, including fixed-width, character-delimited, ADIF, and Cabrillo formats, dynamically updating the map as log files are saved during contests or general operation. Primarily targeting **VHF** and above operators, WorkedGrids aids in grid square collection for contesting and awards. The software offers a fixed-resolution continental viewpoint, zoom-in capabilities, and supports printing or copying the map to the clipboard. It operates on Windows 95 through Windows 11, requiring minimal CPU and RAM, and features a non-invasive installation. The program has undergone several updates, with version 7 released on March 3, 2024, addressing minor fixes and improving stability.

A Variable Base-Loading-Coil provides a practical solution for optimizing HF mobile whip performance across multiple bands. The design, as presented by VK4ADC, details a coil wound on a 50mm PVC former, utilizing 1.6mm enamelled copper wire for robust construction. This approach allows for precise tuning, a critical factor in achieving efficient radiation from a mobile setup, where antenna length is often compromised. My own field experience with similar base-loaded whips confirms the importance of a well-designed loading coil for maximizing signal strength and minimizing SWR. The VK4ADC design incorporates a sliding contact, enabling continuous adjustment, which is superior to fixed taps for fine-tuning resonance on the fly. This variable inductance allows the operator to quickly adapt the antenna to different HF segments, from 80 meters up to 10 meters, without needing to swap out multiple coils. The document includes specific winding data, such as the number of turns per inch and the overall length of the coil, which are essential for replication. It also touches upon the mechanical aspects of integrating the coil with a standard mobile whip, ensuring a stable and weather-resistant assembly for reliable operation during mobile DXing or casual rag-chewing.

The Washington Totem Award recognizes licensed radio amateurs who submit proof of two-way radio contact with the state of Washington. Applicants must confirm contacts with a specified number of Washington counties, with different requirements for stations located within and outside the state. For example, stations outside Washington need 25 confirmed contacts from 25 different counties, while Washington stations require 15 contacts from 15 different counties. Contacts must be made after January 1, 1970, and may be established on any amateur band using any mode. QSL cards or other acceptable proof of contact must be submitted with the application. The award promotes activity within Washington state and encourages DXers to seek out contacts across its diverse geographical areas. Applications are processed by the Western Washington DX Club, which also manages the award rules and verification process.

The Olivia digital mode, a **Multi-Frequency Shift Keying (MFSK)** radioteletype protocol, is specifically engineered for robust communication under difficult propagation conditions on shortwave radio bands from 3 MHz to 30 MHz. Developed by Pawel Jalocha in 2003, Olivia signals can be decoded even when the noise amplitude exceeds the digital signal by over ten times, making it highly effective for transmitting ASCII characters across noisy channels with significant fading and propagation phasing. Early on-the-air tests by Fred OH/DK4ZC and Les VK2DSG on the Europe-Australia 20-meter path demonstrated intercontinental contacts with as little as one-watt RF power under favorable conditions. Common Olivia modes are designated as X/Y, where X represents the number of tones and Y is the bandwidth in Hertz, with examples including 8/250, 16/500, and 32/1000. The resource clarifies that Olivia, unlike some other digital modes, produces a constant envelope, allowing RF power amplifiers to achieve greater conversion efficiencies and making it less prone to non-linearity. Operators are advised that **Automatic Level Control (ALC)** can be set higher than no meter movement for MFSK modulation, as long as it's not driven past its high limit, contrary to common misinformation about other digital modes. The Olivia community encourages voluntary channelization on suggested calling frequencies, such as 14.0725 MHz for 8/250, to facilitate initial contacts, especially for signals below the noise floor. The Olivia Digital DXers Club provides links to Groups.io, Facebook, and Discord for community engagement and offers details on QSO parties.
