The KD6WD Moxon Antenna Project details the construction of 50-ohm two-element wire beam antennas, specifically Moxon rectangles, for the 10, 15, 17, and 20-meter bands. It utilizes AC6LA's software for critical measurement calculations (A-E) based on center frequency and wire size. Construction involves 16-gauge silver-coated copper wire, 16-foot telescoping fiberglass crappie fishing poles as spreaders in an "X" configuration, and various hub designs including aluminum tubing or PVC joints. A 1:1 current balun is used at the feedpoint, with wire nuts for connections, often achieving a 1:1 SWR across the design band. The project highlights practical applications, such as running a kilowatt into the antennas for greyline DX contacts, consistently yielding excellent signal reports. Comparisons to quad loops show 4 to 5 S-unit improvements in both receive and transmit. The Moxon design, according to L.B. Cebik's analysis, offers superior forward gain and front-to-back ratio among wire beams. The author notes a "DX-Vane" effect where a freely suspended Moxon automatically points to the strongest DX signal. Attempts at dual-band operation (17/20 meters) with a single feed were unsuccessful, reinforcing the Moxon's monoband nature, with EZNEC plots provided for a 17-meter Moxon at 30 feet.

A 3.42-meter (11-foot 2-inch) extended-length mobile antenna project is presented, detailing its evolution from an initial 1.65-meter design. W5JGV shares his journey in optimizing mobile HF performance, noting that increasing the top whip length significantly improved radiation efficiency by reducing coil losses and allowing for larger wire gauges. The article includes a comparative table illustrating substantial gain increases, with the 3.42-meter version showing up to 40.6% efficiency on 21.2 MHz compared to a half-wave dipole. Construction details are thoroughly documented, from the use of hard-wall copper pipe for mast sections to the fabrication of custom loading coils. The author explains the necessity of an insulating brace for self-supporting coils and details a unique rotational alignment mechanism for off-center mounted coils to prevent snagging on overhead obstructions. He also describes a "Z" winding technique for 75-meter and 160-meter coils, which minimizes copper losses and manages dielectric losses. The resource provides specific loading coil data, including wire gauge, number of turns, coil length, and inductance values for bands from 18 MHz down to 2 MHz. It emphasizes that these coils may require fine-tuning based on individual vehicle and whip configurations, suggesting an antenna tuner for optimal mobile station operation across multiple HF bands.

A VHF / UHF J-pole vertical antenna de ON6MU

This PDF document, authored by KT4QW in October 2004, details the construction and modeling of a dual-band, horizontally polarized hanging rectangular loop antenna for **10 and 17 meters**. The design, adapted from *The ARRL Handbook*, utilizes _NEC4WIN95_ software for scaling and optimization, targeting a 50 ohm feedpoint impedance. The resource includes a bill of materials, step-by-step construction instructions, and a discussion of the antenna's radiation characteristics. It presents NEC-generated elevation and azimuth patterns, comparing the loop's performance to a half-wave horizontal dipole at the same height and frequency. The 17-meter element is centered at 18.140 MHz for low SWR across the phone band, while the 10-meter element is centered at 28.500 MHz. Construction involves 14-gauge stranded copper wire and Schedule 40 PVC spreaders, with the total wire length calculated by the formula: Length in feet = 1005/MHz. The feedpoint impedance can be adjusted by modifying the rectangular aspect ratio. The document specifies hoisting the antenna to at least a half-wave above ground for testing. It notes that a balun was tested and found to have no measurable effect on SWR or radiation characteristics. A 2-meter scale model is presented to illustrate the physical design, and a "rotator" string is incorporated for directional adjustment up to 90 degrees.

2 meter or Dual Band J-pole bicycle antenna

The N0KHQ Coax Square antenna, designed for 17 meters and built using RG-58 coaxial cable, presents an intriguing option for hams with limited space. L. B. Cebik, _W4RNL_, meticulously models and analyzes this array, clarifying its classification not as a modified Moxon, but as a distinct member of the "dual-coupled, 2-element, parasitic array" family. The design leverages the velocity factor of RG-58 (approximately 0.66-0.67) to achieve significantly shorter element lengths compared to full-size counterparts, resulting in a perimeter of 42 feet for the N0KHQ array versus 54 feet for a standard Moxon. _NEC_ modeling reveals the coax square's performance characteristics, including a forward gain of 5.6 dBi and a 23.7 dB front-to-back ratio on 18.118 MHz. While slightly less gain than a Moxon (6.0 dBi), its pattern exhibits Yagi-like nulls at 90 degrees, distinguishing it from the Moxon's wider beamwidth. The article also delves into the unique feedpoint considerations, explaining how the split braid and center conductor of the RG-58 driver effectively form a folded dipole, allowing for impedance transformation to achieve a good match for 50-Ohm cable. Despite its shortened elements, which inherently narrow the operating bandwidth, the coax square maintains satisfactory performance across the 17-meter band. The analysis emphasizes that while SWR curves are important, a holistic view of gain and pattern degradation across the band is crucial. This antenna is a viable solution for operators needing a compact, directional array, particularly for narrow bands like 17, 30, or 12 meters, where its high-Q performance is most effective.

The G5RV multiband HF antenna, designed by Louis Varney (G5RV) in 1946, is a popular compromise antenna offering good overall performance on most HF bands when paired with an external antenna tuner. The basic full-size G5RV measures 102 feet across the top for 80 through 10 meter operation and is fed at the center via a 34-foot low-loss feed-stub. This interaction between the radiating section and the feed-stub facilitates matching across 80-10 meters with a standard tuner, often eliminating the need for ladder line directly to the shack. The antenna's design center frequency is 14.150 MHz, configured as a 3/2-wave dipole on 20 meters, with its 102-foot length derived from long-wire antenna formulas. Construction details emphasize the matching section, which can be open wire, ladder line (window-type), or TV twin lead. Each type has a specific velocity factor (VF) affecting its physical length for an electrical half-wave on 14 MHz; for instance, open wire requires 33.7 feet (VF 0.97), ladder line 31.3 feet (VF 0.90), and TV twin lead 28.5 feet (VF 0.82). The article provides formulas for calculating these lengths and discusses the antenna's behavior on individual bands, from 3.5 MHz where it acts as a shortened dipole, to 28 MHz where it functions as two three-half-wave long-wire antennas fed in-phase. Practical construction notes include recommendations for vertical descent of the matching section, sealing the coax junction, providing strain relief, and winding a coaxial choke coil to mitigate common mode current. The resource also presents dimensions for double-size (204 ft) and half-size (51 ft) G5RV versions, along with their corresponding matching section lengths for various line types, making it a versatile reference for hams considering this classic wire antenna.

Designing and constructing portable wire antennas for HF operations, this resource explores several configurations including the _foldback dipole_ for space-constrained setups and an inductively shortened dual-band dipole for 20m and 40m. It details the calculation of inductance for shortened elements, providing a Visual Basic 6.0 program screenshot that illustrates determining coil parameters like turns and length for a **25.5 uH** inductor. The document emphasizes practical considerations such as adjusting wire lengths for optimal SWR, noting that a dual-band dipole achieved SWR below 2:1 on both 20m and 40m, with careful adjustment bringing it under 1.5:1. Further, the resource describes a half-wave antenna matched with a coaxial stub, a method often referred to as the _Fuchskreis_ in German amateur radio circles, to transform the high feedpoint impedance to 50 Ohms. This monoband solution, for a 20m application, uses a stub length of **2.98m** (0.216 lambda multiplied by coax velocity factor) and a shorted stub of approximately 48cm. The coaxial stub design is highlighted for its resilience to ground proximity, allowing it to be rolled up or laid on the ground with minimal SWR impact, making it highly suitable for portable QRP operations.

Demonstrating the construction of a short dipole antenna tailored for the 60 meter band, this resource provides detailed instructions for radio enthusiasts with limited space. The design incorporates inductive loading using two inductors (L1/L2) made from PVC tubes, allowing for effective operation on 5 MHz. The antenna consists of 12 meters of wire, divided into four sections, with specific dimensions and materials outlined for optimal performance. Results from users indicate that this antenna can significantly enhance DXing capabilities on the 60 meter band. Feedback from operators suggests that while the design is effective, adjustments may be necessary based on individual setups, such as coil diameter and wire gauge. Many users report successful construction and operation, with some experimenting with variations to improve resonance. The practical application of this antenna design has led to successful contacts and improved signal quality, making it a popular choice among 60 meter band operators.

This resource details the construction of a Moxon rectangle antenna, a two-element wire beam, drawing inspiration from a _QST_ article by Allen Baker, KG4JJH, and a project group led by KD6WD. It outlines the use of _AC6LA_ software for critical measurements (A-E) to design the antenna for specific bands like 17 meters, emphasizing the simplicity of adjusting frequency and wire size. The guide covers material selection for spreaders, such as telescoping fiberglass fishing poles, and various hub constructions, including aluminum tubing and PVC joints, with accompanying images. The author shares practical insights from building multiple Moxons for 10, 15, 17, and 20 meters, noting consistent 1:1 SWR at design frequencies and broadbanded performance. It describes the feedpoint assembly using a 1:1 Yagi current balun and wire nuts for robust, adjustable connections. The resource also discusses element insulators made from Lucite strips and attachment methods to spreaders using plastic wire ties and duct tape, ensuring precise element spacing. Performance observations include significant signal improvements (4-5 S units) over quad loops and a unique "DX-Vane" effect where the suspended antenna self-aligns with the strongest DX signal. The author also recounts an unsuccessful attempt at a dual-band 17/20 meter Moxon, concluding that the Moxon is inherently a monoband antenna, supported by _EZNEC_ plots for a 17-meter design.

Further, the article describes the creation of a custom carrying solution, including a 22-inch tripod bag and a fabric roll-up, to emulate the portability of the original Buddipole system.

A dual band dipole antenna for 40 and 80 meters band. Total lenght of 26 meters, foreseen two coils at aprox 11 meters distance from center feed.

Presents the construction of a shortened _Morgain_ dual-band wire antenna for 40 and 80 meters, specifically designed for installations with limited physical space. The design achieves a compact footprint of approximately 10 x 0.5 meters, utilizing 64 meters of 1.5 mm² insulated electrical wire. The article details an alternative configuration that reduces the antenna's physical length while maintaining its electrical characteristics for dual-band operation. Author _Remo - IM0JZJ_ conducted tests from Sant'Antioco, Sardinia, reporting SWR measurements of 1.2:1 to 1.4:1 on 40 meters. On 80 meters, SWR ranged from 1.1:1 to 1.5:1 across 3620 kHz to 3720 kHz, with a 1:1 current balun recommended for coaxial feed due to the antenna's approximately 50-ohm feed-point impedance. The installation used two 11.50-meter galvanized steel poles, supporting the antenna at about 10 meters above ground. Construction involves three wooden boards and sixteen fiberglass laminate spacers, with specific instructions for routing the 32-meter wire arms. The design eliminates jumpers for 40-meter tuning but requires two jumpers approximately 1.45 meters from the ends for 80-meter operation, which are tuned and then permanently soldered.

The Tri-pole antenna, a clever modification of a standard dipole, allows for dual-band operation by integrating a third element. This design effectively shortens the overall dipole length by 10 to 20 percent, simplifying antenna rotation and offering a compact footprint. KK4OBI's article delves into the operational principles, using a 6 and 10-meter Tri-pole as a primary example, and provides comprehensive instructions for constructing any Tri-pole antenna within the 6 to 15-meter range. Key to the Tri-pole's performance is its off-center feed, necessitating a common mode choke at the feed point for optimal tuning and reduced noise. The author outlines a methodical approach to determining element dimensions, starting with a vertical element frequency calculated as 0.47 times the sum of the desired upper and lower band frequencies. This calculation, along with K-values derived from trend lines, guides the initial lengths for the horizontal arms, demonstrating how a 10m-6m Tri-pole can achieve a total horizontal length 78% shorter than a conventional 10-meter dipole. Tuning and balancing are critical, with the article detailing adjustments to arm lengths and the vertical element to achieve balanced SWR values, as validated through 4NEC2 simulations. Radiation patterns are analyzed at various elevations, showing gains around 5.7 dBi and favorable take-off angles for DX contacts. Construction details specify aluminum tubing dimensions, U-bolts, and an SO-239 connector, emphasizing the importance of a ferrite-based choke for wideband operation.

A dual band vertical antenna for 160 and 80 meters band, on a 18m spiderbeam fiberglass pole. This vertical is a good compromise when you want good performance on these two low ham bands and don't have the space to install two seperate antennas.

Constructing a dual-band antenna for 40 and 20 meters often involves compromises in size or complexity. This resource presents a compact _open sleeve dipole_ design that addresses these challenges by using 450-ohm ladder line and folded elements to achieve a total length of approximately **17.17 meters**, significantly shorter than a full-size 40-meter dipole. The design leverages electromagnetic coupling, where a primary radiator handles the 40-meter band, and a second conductor resonates on 20 meters without direct electrical connection. This configuration eliminates the need for traditional traps, loading coils, or switching components, simplifying construction and reducing potential loss points. The antenna is fed with RG-58C/U coaxial cable, and a common-mode choke is recommended at the feed point to suppress sheath currents, ensuring a cleaner radiation pattern and minimizing RF in the shack. The design is well-suited for portable operations, field deployments, temporary installations, and restricted urban environments where space is a premium, offering solid performance on both HF bands.

The article outlines the specific dimensions and winding techniques for the coaxial trap, emphasizing the use of readily available materials. It details the physical construction of the vertical element, including the mast and radiating sections, to achieve optimal performance across both target bands. The author shares personal experiences with similar trap designs, noting their effectiveness in previous horizontal dipole configurations. Key construction steps are illustrated with _original photos_, showing the assembly of the trap and its incorporation into the overall antenna structure. The design aims for a compact footprint, making it suitable for limited space installations while still delivering effective DX capabilities on the **30-meter** and **20-meter** bands.

This article describes the construction of a simple dual-band VHF/UHF end-fed vertical dipole antenna designed for local repeater access using an Icom IC-705 radio. Built from a single piece of RG58U coaxial cable, the antenna consists of a 460mm exposed inner conductor, 450mm of intact coax, and a 9-turn choke balun wound on a 27mm former. Mounted on a 10m Spiderpole, the antenna achieves excellent SWR readings (<1.2:1 on 2m, <1.5:1 on 70cm) and provides effective coverage of local repeaters with unexpected reach into distant locations.

Addresses the common challenge of constructing effective dual-band antennas for VHF/UHF operations, specifically detailing a J-pole design. It covers the theoretical underpinnings, including calculations for quarter-wavelength radiator and stub sections, accounting for velocity factor and design frequency. The resource provides practical construction guidance using readily available materials like TV twin lead and coaxial cable, culminating in an antenna with a total length of approximately 52 inches. Performance metrics are presented, showing a measured SWR of 1.7:1 or better across most of the 2-meter band and less than 2:1 across the 70-cm band. These SWR measurements, referenced to 50-ohm impedance, were taken at the transmitter end of the feed line. The article also touches upon the necessity of a balun for proper impedance matching between the balanced J-pole and unbalanced coaxial feed line, suggesting a split-core cylindrical ferrite for this purpose.

It covers soldering techniques for copper fittings, drilling an SO-239 panel mount coaxial fitting, and securing feed point connections with stainless steel adjustable band clamps. The resource specifies materials such as Schedule M 1/2-inch copper tubing, various copper fittings, a hardwood dowel or Fiberglas rod for insulation, and #14 stranded copper wire for the feed point. The guide simplifies the J-pole feed point by using an SO-239 fitting with an elongated mounting hole and band clamps, noting an optimal feed point distance of approximately 3 inches above the crossbar for proper impedance matching. It recommends a 4-turn coax choke, 5 inches in diameter, placed within 3 to 4 inches of the feed point for 2-meter operation to mitigate RF on the feedline. The project emphasizes weather sealing with silicon or butyl rubber compound and clear lacquer for durability and appearance.
