Sixty-four years of operating experience inform Glynn E. "Buck" Rogers Sr., K4ABT's, insights into the J-Pole antenna, which he describes as a direct descendant of the _Windom_ or _ZEPP_. His first article on the J-Pole appeared in HRC magazine in 1958, and he has since published numerous pieces in publications like CQ Magazine, consistently referring to the J-Pole as a Windom with a folded-back short section forming the parasitic element. He emphasizes that both the Windom and J-Pole are powerful multi-band antennas, performing exceptionally well at harmonics of their fundamental design frequency, and advocates for 50-ohm coaxial cable with a _BALUN_ at the feed-point to avoid RF energy losses. K4ABT details the J-Pole's features, noting its ease of erection, lack of radials, low angle radiation, greater bandwidth, and immunity to terrestrial noise. He highlights its suitability for local nets and distant repeaters, claiming more gain and durability than most ground planes, and its ability to meet stealth antenna requirements. The guide provides specific dimensions for 2-meter (145.000 to 146.000 MHz) and 6-meter (50.500 to 51.500 MHz) J-Pole antennas, including measurements for the long driven element, short tuning stub, and spacing. The construction section illustrates a modified feed technique using an SO-239 chassis-mount coax connector soldered into a copper tee, deviating from the usual hose clamp method. The author also discusses the use of _EMT_ (electrical metallic thin-wall conduit) as an alternative to copper in earlier days. He cautions against building a 75-meter J-Pole due to its impractical length, reinforcing the antenna's optimal application for VHF and UHF bands.

M0VEY shares insights into constructing a 160-meter mobile DX aerial, detailing the process of sourcing materials and assembly. The project began with a goal to avoid a £50 commercial antenna, instead utilizing a £10 reel of _enamelled copper wire_ and salvaged components like alloy tent poles and plastic water pipe. A friend fabricated a custom stainless steel tube for mounting, featuring a 3/8” thread for a mag-mount, enabling secure vehicle attachment. The aerial's design incorporates four alloy tubes, one plastic tube, and a five-foot whip, engineered to split into two pieces for convenient storage. The loading coil, wound with approximately 115 feet of 0.75mm wire onto a plastic former, was then sealed with blue heat shrink. M0VEY reports successful operation, making contacts across the UK and Europe, with the aerial standing about ten feet tall for local nets at 1.972 MHz and taller for the DX window around 1.845 MHz. Future plans include a base-loaded 160m aerial and an 80m version, leveraging components from the existing _160m DX Mobile Aerial_ to maintain a similar overall size with a smaller coil.

Accessing current contact information for amateur radio operators is crucial for QSLing, award tracking, and general communication within the Ham Radio community. This online tool provides a specialized callbook service, focusing exclusively on Croatian (9A) amateur radio operators who maintain active membership with the Hrvatski Radioamaterski Savez (HRS). It functions as a centralized database, allowing users to look up specific 9A call signs and retrieve associated information, primarily for verification purposes within the Croatian amateur radio scene. The utility of such a focused callbook lies in its direct relevance to local and regional operating activities, including contests, nets, and emergency communications within Croatia. While not a global callbook like QRZ.com or HamQTH, it serves a vital role for Croatian hams and those seeking to confirm contacts with 9A stations, ensuring data accuracy by linking entries directly to HRS membership status. This targeted approach streamlines the process of verifying Croatian amateur radio licenses and membership details.

The Resonant Feedline Dipole (RFD) HF antenna design utilizes a single piece of coaxial cable and a stranded wire section, forming a 1/4-wavelength radiator. This configuration, based on a 1997 ARRL Handbook design (page 20.17), functions by RF traveling on the inside of the coax shield and returning on the outside, creating the second half of the dipole. A choke wound into the feedline prevents RF current from flowing back down the feedline. Construction details include using RG-58a/u coax for a 75m version, with a 1/4-wavelength section of stranded wire soldered to the center conductor. The document provides choke dimensions for RG-213, RG-8, and RG-58 coax across 3.5 MHz to 28 MHz, specifying cable length and number of turns. Dipole dimensions are also tabulated for frequencies from 3.6 MHz to 28.4 MHz, listing overall length and individual leg lengths. Field tests included deployment near Bryson City at 5 feet off the ground and as a sloper during WCARS Field Day in Asheville, yielding successful local and regional contacts.

Demonstrates a practical online tool for locating amateur radio operators by geographic area, specifically using US ZIP codes. This utility allows users to input at least three digits of a desired ZIP code to retrieve a list of active licensees. Search results can be sorted by _call sign_, name, license expiration date, or ZIP code, providing flexibility in data organization. The service offers two primary output formats: direct display in a web browser, which omits address details for privacy, or export to a tab-delimited file, which includes full address information suitable for import into spreadsheet or database applications like _Excel_. This lookup service proves useful for local club organizers seeking to identify potential members within their service area or for hams planning local nets or events. The ability to export data with address details facilitates direct mailings for club newsletters or event announcements, while the browser view maintains privacy for casual lookups. The tool's design prioritizes ease of use, requiring minimal input to generate relevant local amateur radio contact information.

Manually programming D-Star handheld transceivers like the _Icom ID-51A_ and _ID-31A_ can be a straightforward process, enabling operators to configure repeaters, simplex frequencies, and D-Star specific settings without relying on computer software. This method is particularly useful for field operations or when quick adjustments are needed, allowing hams to set up callsign routing, DR mode, and reflector links directly from the radio's interface. Understanding the menu structure and key sequences is crucial for efficient on-the-fly programming. Operators often find manual programming invaluable for activating new D-Star repeaters encountered during travel or for participating in local nets where specific G2 or G3 gateway configurations are required. While software like _CS-51_ offers convenience for bulk programming, the ability to manually input frequencies and D-Star parameters ensures operational flexibility. This approach also helps hams troubleshoot connectivity issues by verifying individual settings directly on the transceiver, ensuring proper D-Star registration and gateway access.
