Demonstrates the practical application of APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) through the lens of HB9PVI's activities in Switzerland. It covers the system's core function of reporting geographical positions and telemetry data from various objects, including mobile stations, aircraft, and the ISS, distributed via packet radio and internet gateways. The resource highlights the routing paradigm shift introduced in April 2005, specifically the recommendation to use _WIDE1-1_ instead of RELAY and WIDE for digipeating to reduce duplicate packets. The page presents real-time maps displaying the positions of amateur radio stations in Switzerland and around Bern, updated every few minutes. It details specific callsigns like _HB9BA-2_ (HB9PVI's home QTH), _HB9BA-8_ (a weather station), and _HB9BA-4_ (a WIDE digipeater on Weissenstein mountain), providing context for their roles within the local APRS network. Links to track HB9PVI's mobile operations (_HB9PVI-9_) and handheld devices (_HB9PVI-15_, _HB9PVI-7_) are also provided. Furthermore, the resource curates a list of APRS software options for various operating systems, including _JavAPRS_ for Europe, _UI-view_, and _X-Astir_ for Linux, alongside digipeater/IGATE software like _DiXPRS_. It also offers downloadable APRS information, including a PDF article by HB9PVI and HE9ZGN, and a PowerPoint presentation in German, making it a repository of practical and historical APRS data.

A distance of 1/8 lambda between the antenna and the vehicle roof is suggested for optimal performance, with slight adjustments possible to lower the take-off angle for terrestrial contacts. This resource details the adaptation of an _Eggbeater_ antenna for mobile use, specifically for VHF operation, leveraging the car's metal roof as a ground plane. It illustrates the mounting method, repurposing a magnetic ski carrier base, and describes the integration of coaxial relays for polarization reversal, a feature also applicable to UHF versions as discussed in "_Eggbeater Antenna VHF/UHF – Part 2_". This mobile configuration proves effective for satellite communications, such as through the International Space Station (ISS), while also maintaining strong performance for land-based radio contacts. The inclusion of switches with indicator lights for VHF and UHF polarization control, powered by the vehicle's battery, highlights practical considerations for field deployment. The system's adaptability for portable operations underscores its versatility beyond fixed mobile installations.

The J-pole antenna calculator helps users design custom J-pole antennas for specific frequency bands. It provides dimensions for key antenna sections based on the chosen frequency and material’s velocity factor. The calculator also offers insights into J-pole antenna mechanics, velocity factors, and mounting tips, making it ideal for enthusiasts creating antennas for amateur or mobile radio communications.

The project details the construction of a portable multiband mobile antenna, designed for rapid deployment with an _Elecraft KX3_ for /M operations. It utilizes a coil and the car body as a counterpoise, enabling operation across multiple HF bands. The article presents a table of coil tap positions for 40m, 20m, 17m, 15m, and 10m, along with corresponding SWR measurements, demonstrating an SWR below 1.5:1 on all tested bands. Photographs illustrate the antenna's components, including the coil winding and mounting mechanism, and its deployment on a vehicle. The author provides insights into the antenna's performance characteristics, noting its resemblance to a vertical dipole despite the unconventional ground plane. The resource includes a parts list and construction steps, making it reproducible for other radio amateurs.

7MHz to 30MHz operation is achieved with a magnetic-mounted HF antenna designed for car roof deployment, capable of handling 100 Watts without an external antenna tuner. The design incorporates a large base-loading coil with multiple taps, allowing for frequency selection across various HF bands. This coil effectively increases the electrical length of a short telescopic antenna element, compensating for its inherent capacitance. Construction involves 3D-printed components for the coil former and support structures, though conventional building methods using plastic drainpipes are also suggested. The car body serves as the ground plane, with the coil assembly mounted on a 500mm square metal plate secured by super neodymium magnets. Protection under the magnets is advised to prevent vehicle scratches. Detailed instructions cover winding the 30-turn coil with 2.5mm diameter household electrical cable, assembling the 3D-printed parts, and making soldered connections. Taps are staggered every five turns for precise frequency adjustment. Performance examples include a 7913km contact to Japan using a 1.5m element and 100 Watts, demonstrating low-angle radiation and omni-directional pattern with minimal S-point loss compared to a full quarter-wave.

The article describes a high-gain, compact beam antenna design for the 2-meter band (144-146 MHz). The NSH 4x4 Boomer is a 4-element antenna that is mounted on a 4-foot boom with an 8.2 dB gain, 1.2:1 SWR, and a front-to-back ratio of 18 db. It is designed for mobile operations and little area, making it perfect for field usage such as disaster management. The design employs regularly spaced parts with a straightforward gamma match for tuning, and the construction materials include a square boom and polished aluminum tubes. In local and portable tests, the antenna worked regularly, achieving contact distances of up to 15 kilometers.

The resource details the construction of a J-pole vertical antenna specifically engineered for motorcycle mounting, addressing the common issue of interference with top cases. It outlines the fabrication process, beginning with an aluminum angle bracket for secure attachment to the lateral support, followed by the creation of the antenna's base from an 8mm threaded rod bent into a U-shape, approximately **40mm** wide. The article specifies the precise method for coaxial cable connections using eyelets and 3mm screws, ensuring robust contact. Further construction steps involve fitting a 10mm aluminum tube onto the threaded rod, with a screw securing the radiating element and establishing core contact. The design prioritizes mechanical stability against vehicle vibrations over fine-tuning SWR with sliding collars. Initial testing yielded a _SWR_ of **1.2** across a significant portion of the band, with improvements noted by optimizing the coaxial braid contact point near the support bracket. The document provides practical insights into material selection and assembly, emphasizing durability for mobile operation. It concludes with aesthetic options, allowing the builder to paint the antenna or retain its natural aluminum finish, making it a functional and adaptable solution for UHF motorcycle communications.

When installing a mobile antenna, optimal placement significantly impacts performance. Factors such as gain, antenna type, ground plane availability, mounting style, and environment must be considered. Antenna designs, such as 1/4 wave and 5/8 wave, have distinct radiation patterns ideal for specific settings—urban areas or flat terrains, respectively. Ground plane size requirements differ by frequency, impacting effectiveness. Among vehicle mounting options, the car roof center provides the best ground plane and minimal obstruction, ensuring peak performance, especially at higher frequencies like 800 MHz.
