The "REAL TIME ANTENNA GAIN COMPARATOR SYSTEM" by IK0BDO details a low-budget amateur radio tool designed for optimizing homebrew VHF/UHF antennas. It facilitates the simultaneous comparison of two antennas, one a known reference (e.g., a dipole) and the other under test, displaying their relative gain directly in decibels. The system addresses limitations of previous measurement benches by enabling on-field optimization, accounting for balun performance, impedance mismatching, and cable losses. The core of the device is an electronic solid-state switch utilizing PIN diodes, which alternates signal sampling from the two antennas 100 times per second. This rapid switching prevents the receiver's Automatic Gain Control (AGC) from compensating for signal differences, allowing for precise comparative measurements. The document includes detailed schematic diagrams for both the RF switching unit and the associated measure unit, which employs two VU-meters to display cyclic signal levels. It also provides guidance on setting up the PIN diode switching with an oscilloscope and adjusting trimmer potentiometers P1, P2, and P3 for optimal operation. Further sections cover the construction of VHF (144.150 KHz) and UHF (432.360 MHz) beacons for testing, along with critical considerations for selecting an appropriate test range or site. Recommendations include maintaining a minimum distance of 50 wavelengths between transmitting and receiving positions, avoiding ground reflections, and using reference antennas with gains similar to the antenna under examination. The author notes satisfactory results from measurements on dipoles and other antennas, highlighting the system's ability to appreciate fractional decibel differences.

One specific challenge in the KazShack, operating Single Operator Two Radios (SO2R), involved sharing a K9AY receive antenna between two transceivers without direct RF connection or manual feedline swapping. The solution, detailed in this project, adapts the **W3LPL RX bandpass filter** design to split 160m and 80m signals, feeding them to separate radio inputs while maintaining isolation. This approach also addresses the issue of strong broadcast band interference from a nearby 50KW WPTF transmitter on 680kc. The construction utilizes T-50-3 toroids and NP0 ceramic capacitors, built in a "dead bug" style on copper clad board. Each band's filter coils are identical and resonated to the desired frequency using an MFJ-259 antenna analyzer. A single DPDT relay, controlled by a remote toggle switch mounted on an aluminum panel, facilitates quick band switching between radios, simplifying low-band operations. While some signal loss is noted, the expected lower noise levels from the receive antenna are anticipated to compensate, potentially reducing the need for constant volume adjustments during toggling between transmit and receive antennas.

The 80M grounded half loop antenna, inspired by a 1984 QST article by SM0AQW, is a compact solution for limited spaces. Comprising a 127-foot wire fed against ground and supported by radials, it balances performance and practicality. Despite compromises in length and proximity to structures, the antenna delivers strong signal reports and effective multi-band tuning using an SGC 237 antenna coupler. Ideal for CW operation, it offers low SWR on 80-10M, though noise levels and safety considerations warrant attention. This versatile design excels in constrained environments.

The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit used to measure sound level, widely applied in electronics, signals, and communication to describe power, sound pressure, voltage, or intensity ratios. For instance, a 3 dB increase signifies a doubling of power, while a 10 dB increase represents a tenfold power multiplication. Sound pressure level is calculated as 20 log (p2/p1) dB, reflecting the square relationship between power and pressure. Standard reference levels, such as 20 micropascals for sound pressure in air, establish absolute dB values, where 0 dB corresponds to the reference level, not an absence of sound. Human hearing sensitivity varies with frequency, necessitating A and C weighting filters (dBA, dBC) in sound meters to approximate the ear's response. The phon unit relates to dB via psychophysically measured frequency response, with 1 kHz readings being identical. The sone unit quantifies perceived loudness, where 1 sone equals 40 phons, and a 10 dB increase above 40 phons roughly doubles perceived loudness. In radio, dBi measures antenna gain relative to an isotropic radiator, crucial for anisotropic radiation patterns.

During a club's "Filetto Day" event, a comparative field test was conducted between a **Buddipole** antenna and a homemade 20/40-meter wire dipole. The author, IW5EDI, performed this personal evaluation from a mountain top at 1500 meters above sea level, utilizing a Yaesu FT-857D transceiver to switch between antennas. The observations on the 20-meter band indicated that the wire dipole consistently delivered significantly stronger signals compared to the Buddipole. Additionally, the Buddipole exhibited higher levels of **QRM** during the listening tests. The commercial Buddipole, known for its multiband capability and compact size with a self-supporting tripod, was contrasted with the simpler, larger wire dipole, which required a fiberglass fish pole for support. This direct comparison highlights practical differences in performance and deployment between a popular portable commercial antenna and a basic wire antenna in a real-world operating environment.

The MFJ-971 portable antenna tuner, as stock, lacks a bypass switch and sufficient inductance for efficient 1.8 MHz operation. This modification addresses these limitations by integrating a DPDT switch for direct signal bypass, enhancing operational flexibility. Furthermore, the guide details the addition of a T130-2 iron powder toroid, wound with **29 turns** of enamelled copper wire, to augment the tuner's internal inductance. This increases the maximum inductance from approximately 17µH to around **27µH**, enabling effective impedance matching on the _160-meter band_. The modification involves cutting the wire after the 'L' tap on the original inductor and inserting the additional toroid, ensuring the entire original coil plus the new inductance is engaged when 'L' is selected. This preserves the functionality of other inductance settings while extending low-band performance. The article also highlights a potential RF burn hazard from the variable capacitor nuts on the MFJ-971, even at QRP power levels.
