The NCDXF/IARU International Beacon Project schedule provides precise transmission start times for 18 beacons operating on 14.100 MHz, 18.110 MHz, 21.150 MHz, 24.930 MHz, and 28.200 MHz. Each beacon transmits every three minutes, cycling through its callsign at 22 WPM followed by four one-second dashes. The initial callsign and first dash are sent at 100 watts, with subsequent dashes at 10 watts, 1 watt, and 100 milliwatts, enabling **propagation analysis** across varying signal strengths. The schedule lists the minute and second within each hour for the first transmission of each beacon on its respective frequencies. This resource allows **DXers** and **contesters** to accurately predict beacon transmissions for real-time propagation assessment. For example, 4U1UN transmits first at 00:00 on 14.100 MHz, followed by VE8AT at 00:10, and W6WX at 00:20, continuing the sequence. The page also notes recent hardware upgrades, such as the installation of IBP 2.0 controllers with Icom 7200 radios at some sites, and provides status updates for beacons experiencing hardware failures or those not recently heard, aiding in troubleshooting and managing expectations for monitoring.

The Elecraft K3, a popular HF transceiver, is often benchmarked against new market entrants. This article critically compares the Kenwood TS-590S to the K3, focusing on key technical specifications and operational aspects relevant to serious amateur radio operators. The author proposes three distinct evaluation methods: a circuit diagram comparison, an independent review analysis (referencing Peter Hart, G3SJX, in RadCom), and a real-world "ear test" by experienced contest operators on 40 and 80 meters. The analysis delves into specific receiver components, including the first mixer design, RF and IF amplifier performance, and the presence of an image noise filter. It highlights the K3's switched mixer and the potential for the TS-590S to utilize similar or improved designs, such as a classic filter with enhanced selectivity. The article also scrutinizes the second mixer stage, noting the K3's SA612 chip and its associated IP3 limitations, suggesting Kenwood might achieve benefits with a different mixer architecture. Further points of comparison include DSP capabilities, where the K3's high-performing DSP with KK7P's involvement is noted against the TS-590S's potential reliance on newer IC technology but possibly less refined software. The discussion extends to DDS and PLL implementations for phase noise and spurious emissions, and the utility of a second receiver for DX chasing and contesting, acknowledging its importance for some operators while being less critical for others. The article concludes by emphasizing personal preference in equipment selection.

Deciphering weak or noisy **CW** (Continuous Wave) signals often presents a challenge for amateur radio operators, particularly in contest environments or during DXpeditions. CWLab04X addresses this by providing a software solution that leverages **DSP** (Digital Signal Processing) capabilities of a soundcard to decode Morse code. It functions as both a receiver and a sender, supporting traditional CW and a unique "CCW" mode designed to enhance copyability of signals struggling against high noise floors. The program offers two installation methods: a Windows-specific installer for straightforward setup or a zipped package compatible with Windows and Linux systems running Wine. Users must first download and review the accompanying PDF documentation, CWLab04.pdf and CWLab04_Hardware.pdf, which detail the software's operation and the necessary soundcard interface circuit. The hardware PDF outlines a direct connection from the receiver audio output to the soundcard input, with optional conversion of the soundcard output for hard-keying or microphone input. CWLab04X is intended as an operational aid rather than a replacement for skilled human copy, particularly highlighting the effectiveness of its CCW mode in adverse signal conditions. The software was last revised in April 2009, with installation requiring the LV Runtime 602.

GW4ALG's _136 kHz Pages_ document the evolution of vertical antennas for the 2200m band, starting with a prototype mounted on a house wall. This initial design, despite achieving the first **395 km** GM-GW QSO, suffered from significant insulation breakdown, high RF losses due to proximity to the house, and difficult tuning adjustments. The author details the challenges of maintaining resonance and matching with a variometer in the loft, noting that adding three earth spikes offered no measurable improvement over a simple water tap connection. The subsequent experimental 12m vertical, relocated away from the house, significantly reduced dielectric losses and proved far more effective. This antenna enabled GW4ALG to set a world DX record on 136 kHz with a **1916 km** QSO to OH1TN, and an intra-UK record of **703 km** to GM3YXM/P. The resource further explores the use of helium-filled balloons to extend the vertical radiator, achieving heights up to 27m, typically 20m, for enhanced low-band performance. Practical advice on balloon types, inflation, and critical insulation between the wire and balloon is provided, emphasizing safety and avoiding arcing.

Constructing a compact, single-feed triband Moxon antenna for 20, 15, and 10 meters is detailed by DU1RZ, drawing from his personal experience with space-constrained antenna projects. Initially fascinated by cubical quads, the author transitioned to Moxon designs in 2005 after realizing his roof space was insufficient for a bulky quad. His first experimental monoband Moxon for 15 meters, built from repurposed materials, provided solid DX QSOs for seven years, despite being slightly below the 21 MHz band center. The project outlines the design process, including using the _MOXGEN Calculator_ for element dimensions and material selection, such as #14 AWG enamel copper wire and fishing poles for spreaders. DU1RZ shares insights from simulations with DL2GMS regarding insulated versus non-insulated wire performance, noting that insulated wire can shift resonant frequencies lower. The assembly instructions cover preparing wire elements, connecting feed points, and tuning the antenna, with initial SWR measurements taken at 10 feet and final readings on a mast showing excellent results: 1.0:1 on 14.225 MHz, 1.1:1 on 21.250 MHz, and 1.3:1 on 28.50 MHz. Transmission tests with 4F1BYN indicated a front-to-back ratio of approximately 2 S units with 10 watts output. The author emphasizes adaptability, encouraging builders to use readily available materials rather than strictly replicating his setup. Key observations from DU1RZ and DL2GMS highlight the antenna's strong performance across 20, 15, and 10 meters, good front-to-back ratio, full bandwidth on 20 and 15 meters, and its small turning radius of about 4.18 meters (13.54 feet), making it suitable for limited antenna space. Its lightweight construction and low wind load are also noted as significant advantages.

A 38-foot Tristao Tower, similar to the U.S. Tower HDX538, was installed twice by the author, first in 1980 and then reinstalled in 1989. The resource details the challenges of self-performing heavy construction tasks like breaking concrete and digging a 3' x 3' x 6' deep footing, contrasting it with hiring professionals for the second installation. It highlights the financial and physical costs associated with DIY tower foundation work, noting a rebar cage cost of $65 in 1980 versus $150-$175 today, and the expense of tools for bending rebar. The content emphasizes the critical importance of obtaining building permits, recounting how a permit in Buena Park, California, nullified a neighbor's complaint about TVI. It also discusses the necessity of adhering to local building codes, such as the 1975 UBC and the subsequent 1985 UBC recertification requirement, which reduced the allowed antenna wind loading from 30 square feet to 20 square feet for the author's _KT34A_ Yagi. The footing depth also increased from 6 feet to 6.5 feet under the newer code. Practical advice includes hiring licensed contractors for specialized work, delaying antenna installation for a month after raising the tower, and verifying buried utilities before any excavation. The author provides specific examples of utility location services like _DigAlert_ in California, underscoring the legal and safety implications of neglecting this step. The narrative is grounded in personal experience, offering a realistic perspective on tower projects.

This resource provides a historical analysis of amateur radio call sign assignment policies in the United States, detailing regulatory shifts from the Department of Commerce to the Federal Radio Commission (FRC) and subsequently the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). It documents the evolution of call sign issuance, from early reissuance practices in the 1920s to the implementation of the Group Call Sign Assignment System on March 24, 1978. This system categorized call signs (e.g., 1x2, 2x1, 1x3, 2x3 formats) into groups A, B, C, and D, correlating with license classes such as Extra, Advanced, General, and Novice, and specifying prefixes for contiguous U.S. and territorial areas (e.g., _AH_, _KP_, _KL_). The document further details the legislative process leading to the modern Vanity Call Sign program, initiated by a petition in June 1990 and formalized by the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of August 10, 1993. It outlines the FCC's adoption of final rules on December 23, 1994, and the subsequent fee structure, with the first vanity call sign issued on May 31, 1996, at a cost of **$30.00** for a ten-year term. The ARRL's proposed "starting gates" implementation strategy is also described, which phased in eligibility for vanity call signs based on license class and prior holder status. On December 12, 1901, Guglielmo Marconi successfully received the first transatlantic wireless communication, a Morse code "S" (three dots), at 04:30 GMT. This article details the setup for this groundbreaking experiment, noting Marconi's receiver in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, utilized a _coherer_ and an antenna elevated by balloons and kites. The transmitting station at Poldhu, Cornwall, England, featured twenty-four 200-foot ships' masts and a 25-kilowatt alternator. The resource explains how this contact disproved contemporary beliefs about radio wave limitations due to Earth's curvature, later understood through _ionospheric propagation_. It frames Marconi's achievement as the "very first DX" in amateur radio terms, defining DX as telegraphic shorthand for distance and _DXing_ as the hobby of receiving distant signals. The article also provides external links for further reading on Marconi's experiments and the science behind transatlantic radio signal reception.

Operating from Banana Island, Sierra Leone (AF-037), the 9L2019 DXpedition by F6KOP and a ten-operator team used the callsign 9LY1JM from January 9-21, 2019. This detailed report covers the logistical challenges, including securing visas and licenses with local assistance from Mark 9L1YXJ and Gregory of Dalton’s Guest House. The team deployed monoband quarter-wave verticals on the beach and two Beverage on Ground (BOG) antennas for Europe/Asia and the USA, operating four stations simultaneously. Technical hurdles encountered included high tides submerging antennas, requiring repositioning, and persistent QRM between closely spaced stations, mitigated by doubling filters. CW signal irregularities at 30-32 WPM were resolved by PC and WINTEST restarts. A significant FT8 logging bug was identified and corrected with on-site software. Despite these issues, the team logged over 4,000 QSOs in the first 24 hours, averaging 5,000 QSOs daily, with a peak of over 6,000 in one day. Propagation varied, with excellent 160m conditions on January 12 yielding over 750 QSOs, and a later four-hour opening pushing the 160m total past 1,600. High bands were challenging due to low solar activity, but mid-bands provided intense pileups and rapid continent-wide contacts. The DXpedition concluded with nearly 50,000 QSOs, including a successful school QSO with Collège Doisneau de Sarralbe (57), managed by F1ULQ and F6KFT.
