The **Extended Double Zepp** (EDZ) antenna, a simple wire design, is presented as a means to achieve 3-4 dB of gain on 10 meters, with an overall length of just 43 feet. This resource, authored by WB3HUZ, details several gain antennas suitable for the 29 MHz AM segment, all modeled using EZNEC software at 30 feet above ground. Other designs include a compact rectangular loop, offering more gain than the EDZ and a lower take-off angle, and the **Lazy H**, a bidirectional antenna providing 6 dB gain, which is also workable on 20, 17, 15, and 12 meters. The Bisquare, a diamond-shaped open-top loop, is also featured, providing approximately 4 dB gain and requiring only a single support. These designs are primarily fed with ladder line or open-wire line to simplify matching, though a coax feed option for the EDZ is shown for 10-meter-only operation. The Lazy H, for instance, requires about 16 feet of open-wire line for its half-wavelength elements spaced a half-wavelength apart. An enhanced EDZ Lazy H variant is also discussed, achieving an additional 1-2 dB gain by extending element length to 1.28 wavelengths and increasing spacing to 0.64-0.75 wavelengths. The Bisquare, while primarily a 10-meter antenna, can be adapted for 20 meters by closing the top connection.

This drawing shows a simple 10 meter wire J-pole antenna designed for 28.4 MHz. It is a vertical, end-fed Zepp-style antenna made from common materials and intended for easy home construction. The main radiating element is a straight length of stranded copper wire, either 14 or 18 gauge, cut to about 16.5 feet. At the top, the wire is supported by an insulator, allowing the antenna to be hoisted vertically. The matching section is made from 450-ohm ladder line, approximately 7 feet 9.5 inches long, and shorted at the bottom. This matching stub transforms the impedance so the antenna can be fed with coaxial cable. The feed point is tapped about 6 inches above the bottom of the stub, with the shield and center conductor connected at the proper points. A choke balun is formed with five turns of RG-58 coax in a 4-inch diameter loop to help reduce unwanted RF on the feed line. The drawing notes that this antenna has about 0 dBd gain, similar to a dipole, but offers an omnidirectional pattern and low-angle radiation when installed high. Its main advantage is practical performance, simple construction, and effective coverage for 10 meter operation.

The KD6WD Moxon Antenna Project details the construction of 50-ohm two-element wire beam antennas, specifically Moxon rectangles, for the 10, 15, 17, and 20-meter bands. It utilizes AC6LA's software for critical measurement calculations (A-E) based on center frequency and wire size. Construction involves 16-gauge silver-coated copper wire, 16-foot telescoping fiberglass crappie fishing poles as spreaders in an "X" configuration, and various hub designs including aluminum tubing or PVC joints. A 1:1 current balun is used at the feedpoint, with wire nuts for connections, often achieving a 1:1 SWR across the design band. The project highlights practical applications, such as running a kilowatt into the antennas for greyline DX contacts, consistently yielding excellent signal reports. Comparisons to quad loops show 4 to 5 S-unit improvements in both receive and transmit. The Moxon design, according to L.B. Cebik's analysis, offers superior forward gain and front-to-back ratio among wire beams. The author notes a "DX-Vane" effect where a freely suspended Moxon automatically points to the strongest DX signal. Attempts at dual-band operation (17/20 meters) with a single feed were unsuccessful, reinforcing the Moxon's monoband nature, with EZNEC plots provided for a 17-meter Moxon at 30 feet.

These omnidirectional antennas offer Horizontal polarization, and about 2.1 dbd of gain. They are much quieter than a dipole or a vertical, have a broader bandwidth and will usually out perform a dipole antenna.

Simple, inexpensive and easy to erect, this antenna provides directivity, low angle radiation and a small gain on a number of HF bands.

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

The document details the construction of a compact, two-element Quad antenna specifically designed for the 10, 12, and 15-meter HF bands, featuring a single feedline for all three bands. It provides specific dimensions for the driven element and reflector loops, along with boom length and spacing, emphasizing a **0.12 wavelength** spacing between elements. The design incorporates a gamma match for impedance transformation and uses PVC tubing for spreaders, aiming for a lightweight yet robust structure suitable for portable or restricted-space operations. Performance measurements indicate a forward gain of approximately **6 dBd** on 10 meters and a front-to-back ratio of _20 dB_ on 15 meters, demonstrating effective directivity and signal rejection. The antenna exhibits a VSWR below 1.5:1 across the target bands, achieved through careful tuning of the gamma match. This compact Quad offers a viable directional solution for HF DXing and contesting, particularly where full-size Yagis are impractical.

Two Delta-Loops in phase. The purpose of this article is to propose an antenna with a high gain, a high efficiency and a very low price that is easy to build for any frequency.

The grounded half loop describe in this article is basically a half wave length wire on 80 Meters. The 80M grounded half loop antenna, inspired by a 1984 QST article by SM0AQW, is a compact solution for limited spaces. Comprising a 127-foot wire fed against ground and supported by radials, it balances performance and practicality. Despite compromises in length and proximity to structures, the antenna delivers strong signal reports and effective multi-band tuning using an SGC 237 antenna coupler. Ideal for CW operation, it offers low SWR on 80-10M, though noise levels and safety considerations warrant attention. This versatile design excels in constrained environments.

Examines the design and performance of a compact, efficient multiband beam antenna, based on a modified **W8JK array** by K5LJ. The author recounts his quest for a simple, compact, and reasonably efficient beam, initially using a single delta loop for 40 meters. He then details his modeling efforts with EZNEC, focusing on a W8JK array using 20-meter dipoles, noting its venerable design history in various Antenna Handbooks and QST. The resource explains how the classic W8JK array, composed of 0.5-lambda elements at the lowest operating frequency, uses a closely spaced phasing line to connect feedpoints, often 450-ohm ladder line. K5LJ's modifications, including offsetting the feedpoint on the phasing line, resulted in surprising gain and a somewhat unidirectional pattern on 20 meters, rivaling a full-sized Yagi. The article also delves into mechanical construction details, using nested tubing and PVC pipe for element isolation, and discusses the feedpoint impedance characteristics across multiple HF bands.

The HF horizontal loop has been around for many years now. This article includes a YouTube video and discusses the reasons for looking at this antenna, its design, and its installation. There are some on-air comparisons against three regular double bazooka (coax) dipoles and the Par SWL End-Fed antenna.

A magnetic loop antenna for the VHF band, featuring a high gain that can be compared to a quarter wave vertical antenna

Operating magnetic loop antennas requires careful consideration of RF safety, particularly regarding near-field magnetic field intensity. This resource presents calculations for magnetic field strength (H-field) at various distances from a magnetic loop, emphasizing that the H-field is significantly higher than the E-field in the near-field region due to the inductive nature of the radiating element. It provides specific formulas and examples for determining safe operating distances based on power levels and loop dimensions, crucial for compliance with RF exposure limits. The analysis compares calculated H-field values against FCC and ICNIRP maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits for controlled and uncontrolled environments. It demonstrates that even at QRP power levels (e.g., 5W), the H-field can exceed MPE limits within a few feet of the antenna, necessitating greater separation distances than often assumed for electric field considerations. The practical application of these calculations helps amateur radio operators configure their stations to ensure personnel safety and regulatory compliance when deploying compact, high-Q magnetic loop antennas.

The configuration of this antenna is a triangle with apex in the top of a very tall tree. The antenna is fed at a bottom corner using 450 ohm ladder line.

Operating a ham station often involves encountering radio frequency interference (RFI), RF feedback, or RF burns, which are frequently misattributed to poor equipment grounding. This resource meticulously dissects these assumptions, asserting that RF grounds on the operating desk often merely mask more significant system flaws. It identifies five primary causes for RF problems, including antenna system design flaws, proximity of the antenna to the operating position, DC power supply ground loops, equipment design defects, and poorly installed connectors or defective cables. The content emphasizes that issues like "hot cabinets" or changes in SWR when connecting a ground indicate substantial RF flowing over wiring or cabinets, a phenomenon known as common-mode current. The article provides detailed explanations of common-mode current generation, particularly from single-wire fed antennas like longwires, random wires, and OCF dipoles, which inherently present high levels of RF in the shack. It also illustrates how vertical antennas, lacking a perfect ground system, can excite feed lines with significant common-mode current. Through simulations, the author demonstrates how a dipole without a proper _balun_ can cause RF problems at the operating desk, showing current patterns and voltage distributions on feed line shields. The discussion extends to the proper application of _RF isolators_ and _ferrite beads_, clarifying their role in modifying common-mode impedance on cable shields and cautioning against their use as a band-aid for fundamental system defects. The resource advocates for correcting the actual source of RF problems, such as antenna system issues or poor connector mounting, rather than relying on internal shack grounding or isolators. It highlights that properly functioning two-conductor feed lines, like coaxial or open-wire lines, should result in minimal RF levels at the operating position, even without a desk RF ground. The author shares personal experience, noting that his stations since the late 1970s have operated without RF grounds at the desks, relying instead on proper antenna system design and feed line integrity.

This page allows hams to design a vertical-plane delta-loop antenna for a single amateur HF band in different configurations. By choosing different feed-point positions, operators can observe variations in polarization properties, radiation patterns, and feed-point impedances. Users can generate radiation pattern plots, VSWR charts, antenna current diagrams, and Smith charts for their antennas over various ground types. Through adjusting the antenna's physical dimensions and refreshing the plots, hams can gain insights into the antenna's performance in the field. The page also discusses how elevation radiation patterns may change based on the antenna configuration and feed-point position.

A vertical delta loop is a practical antenna for low bands, popular for its simple design requiring just one support. Its shape, an equilateral triangle in free space, yields optimal gain and radiation resistance. Deviating from this shape lowers performance. The delta loop can be polarized either horizontally or vertically based on the feed point location. In vertical polarization, it acts as two quarter-wave verticals with the baseline feeding one side. This design minimizes radiation from the baseline while maintaining effective operation.

Chavdar Levkov, LZ1AQ, presents an experimental comparison of small wideband magnetic loops, building on his previous work on wideband active small magnetic loop antennas. His research focuses on increasing loop sensitivity by maximizing the short-circuit current, which is directly tied to the "loop factor" M = A/L, where A is the equivalent loop area and L is its inductance. Levkov's methodology involves reducing inductance and increasing area through parallel or coplanar crossed (CC) configurations, comparing these designs against a reference single quad loop of 1 m2 area. Experimental verification included testing three distinct loop types: a simple quad loop, two coplanar crossed (CC) loops, and eight parallel loops, all designed to have a total geometric area of 1 m2. Measurements were conducted at 1.8, 3.5, 7, and 10 MHz using a small transmitter 270 meters away, with a Perseus direct sampling receiver for precise signal level assessment. The results consistently showed that CC loops, particularly Loop 5 (two CC circular loops with 1.44 m2 total area), yielded significantly higher currents, up to 9.1 dB over the reference loop at 3.5 MHz, validating M as a reliable predictor of loop sensitivity. Numerical simulations using MMANA further corroborated the experimental findings, demonstrating an almost perfect correlation between the calculated M factor and the induced loop current for 15 different loop models. Levkov concludes that CC loops offer superior sensitivity for a given loop area, while parallel loops are advantageous for minimizing physical volume. Practical recommendations suggest using loops with an M factor greater than 0.5 uA/pT for quiet rural environments, and he provides a spreadsheet tool, WLoop_calc.xls, to aid in optimizing loop configurations for specific operational needs.

This presentation on antennas is a practical guide for amateur radio operators. The key takeaway is that the best antenna for your station depends on your constraints and goals. There is no magic solution and buying a wire antenna is not recommended as it might be expensive and not as effective. The presentation covers different antenna types including dipoles, verticals, Yagis and loop antennas. Important factors to consider when choosing an antenna include SWR, feeder types, and whether you need a balun. The author emphasizes that ATUs don’t improve a poor antenna and advises against obsessing over SWR readings.

The K5USS 6 Meter Hentenna Project page on Hamuniverse provides detailed instructions on how to build a 6 meter directional antenna with 3.5 dBd gain. The project is presented with permission from K5USS, Charlie of Richardson, Texas. This directional antenna is a full wave loop on 6 meters, horizontally polarized but mounted vertically, with a 50 ohm impedance, ideal for 6 meter SSB operations. The page is useful for hams looking to construct their own directional antenna for improved performance on the 6 meter band.

Designing a collapsible 6-meter beam antenna involves careful consideration of element geometry and feedline matching, as demonstrated by VE3SMA's project. The construction draws inspiration from foldable dipole concepts and established wire beam designs like the Penn. State 40m beam and the DJ4SA Spiderbeam. Utilizing **4NEC2 modeling**, the author optimized element lengths for gain and bandwidth, observing the impact of end loops on resonant frequency and the need for compensation. Feeding the approximately 25-ohm balanced antenna with 50-ohm unbalanced cable required a specialized network. This setup incorporates a choke **balun** and a matching section built from two series quarter-wave transformers using readily available 75-ohm cable. On-the-air results validate the design, including a successful 1st double hop Es QSO with 10 Watts and satisfactory performance in the CW WW VHF Contest from FN05, where 41 grids were worked with 100 Watts, showing improved performance over a simple dipole.
