Examines the practical considerations and technical challenges of deploying mobile antennas for 10-meter operation, particularly for operators on the move. It addresses the inherently _lossy_ nature of shortened, loaded vertical antennas typically used in mobile configurations, encouraging hams to view these limitations as engineering challenges. The resource provides actionable advice on safeguarding vehicle electronics, selecting appropriate cabling like _RG-213_, and properly grounding antenna mounts to the vehicle chassis. Specific mounting strategies are detailed, including roof, trunk lip, and side-mounting for trucks and vans, along with their respective advantages and drawbacks. It emphasizes the importance of a robust ground plane and suggests methods for improving grounding beyond simple set screws. The article also touches on antenna choices, mentioning "bugcatchers" and "Hamstick types" as viable options for 10 meters. Furthermore, the guide transitions to stationary mobile operation, where antenna options expand significantly. It outlines how to deploy portable dipoles or 2-element beams from a parked vehicle, offering practical tips for assembly, storage, and mast guying using simple materials like a concrete block. It notes that a 5/8 wavelength height, approximately **20 feet** on 10 meters, often yields good short-skip and DX performance, even with a take-off angle above **20 degrees**.

A shortened and invisible wire antenna for 7 MHz

The K5OE 2-meter vertical mobile antenna design, detailed in this resource, employs a 3/8-wavelength vertical section complemented by four shortened radials, forming an off-center-fed vertical dipole. This configuration creates a self-contained lower half, enhancing efficiency compared to traditional 1/4-wave monopoles relying on vehicle bodies for a ground plane. The article specifies construction using PVC components, 10-gauge insulated wire for elements, and provides precise dimensions in both inches and centimeters for the 25-3/16" (64 cm) vertical and 7-3/16" (20 cm) radials. Performance data indicates an honest 3 dBi of gain at 6 feet elevation (2 dBi free-space), with a pattern favoring the horizon, suitable for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications. At 20 feet high, the same antenna exhibits almost 6 dBi of gain, with a nominal 50 Ohm feedpoint impedance at 146.850 MHz. Tuning instructions involve trimming element lengths, with the author achieving a 1.2:1 SWR by pruning the mast to 24-3/4" and radials to 7". The resource highlights the antenna's effectiveness for mobile LEO satellite uplinks, particularly at low elevations, and its suitability for fixed, mobile, or portable operations. The flexible wire elements allow for easy folding, making it a practical choice for backpacking. The original design by K5OE was previously hosted on aol.com.

The content highlights practical considerations such as weatherproofing the connections and supporting the fiberglass elements to prevent sagging. It also includes a brief comparison to an inverted-V at similar height and a ground-mounted vertical, noting the rotatable dipole's quieter reception. The author shares insights into the iterative design process and tuning adjustments made to achieve optimal resonance.

Shortened vertical antenna for 40 meters band an homebrew project

The G5RV multiband HF antenna, designed by Louis Varney (G5RV) in 1946, is a popular compromise antenna offering good overall performance on most HF bands when paired with an external antenna tuner. The basic full-size G5RV measures 102 feet across the top for 80 through 10 meter operation and is fed at the center via a 34-foot low-loss feed-stub. This interaction between the radiating section and the feed-stub facilitates matching across 80-10 meters with a standard tuner, often eliminating the need for ladder line directly to the shack. The antenna's design center frequency is 14.150 MHz, configured as a 3/2-wave dipole on 20 meters, with its 102-foot length derived from long-wire antenna formulas. Construction details emphasize the matching section, which can be open wire, ladder line (window-type), or TV twin lead. Each type has a specific velocity factor (VF) affecting its physical length for an electrical half-wave on 14 MHz; for instance, open wire requires 33.7 feet (VF 0.97), ladder line 31.3 feet (VF 0.90), and TV twin lead 28.5 feet (VF 0.82). The article provides formulas for calculating these lengths and discusses the antenna's behavior on individual bands, from 3.5 MHz where it acts as a shortened dipole, to 28 MHz where it functions as two three-half-wave long-wire antennas fed in-phase. Practical construction notes include recommendations for vertical descent of the matching section, sealing the coax junction, providing strain relief, and winding a coaxial choke coil to mitigate common mode current. The resource also presents dimensions for double-size (204 ft) and half-size (51 ft) G5RV versions, along with their corresponding matching section lengths for various line types, making it a versatile reference for hams considering this classic wire antenna.

Their product line includes preamplifiers designed for shortened vertical antennas, featuring optimized 15dB gain and array-matched characteristics. These components are engineered to enhance weak signal reception and improve signal-to-noise ratio across the HF spectrum. The company provides controllers for managing multiple vertical elements in a phased array configuration, enabling directional reception patterns. These systems are particularly effective for mitigating local noise and interference, a common challenge in urban and suburban operating environments. Specific offerings include solutions for 160-meter and 80-meter bands, addressing the unique requirements of low-band DXing. Technical details often reference components like the 2N3866 transistor in preamp designs and discuss concepts such as out-of-band attenuation. The focus remains on optimizing receiving antenna performance through impedance matching and active amplification, rather than transmit capabilities.

The NB6Zep Antenna, an electrically shortened 80-meter end-fed wire, addresses space constraints for low-band operation by integrating two loading coils into a 37-foot wire. This design, modeled with _EZNEC_, explores configurations like the quarter-wave sloper and inverted-L, with the latter providing a more vertical radiation pattern and practical backyard deployment. The resource details specific coil construction, recommending 21 uH coils made from _BW coil stock #3026_ or similar, and outlines wire segment lengths for optimal tuning. Performance analysis indicates a radiating efficiency of approximately 27% with good ground conductivity, resulting in a signal typically 3-4 dB down compared to a full-size quarter-wave vertical. The antenna exhibits a narrow bandwidth, around 50 kHz, due to its high Q, necessitating a tuner for broader band operation. Feedpoint impedance is low, with ground resistance playing a critical role in achieving a usable SWR. The article emphasizes the importance of an effective ground rod at the feedpoint for proper operation and tuning, suggesting an antenna analyzer for precise adjustments. It confirms the antenna's suitability for DX, citing successful contacts from Oregon to the East Coast and Hawaii on a 160-meter variant, making it a viable option for urban operators seeking low-angle radiation on 80 meters.

When operating Parks on the Air (POTA) in public spaces, maintaining a low profile can be advantageous, as VA3KOT discovered. This antenna design draws inspiration from several established concepts: Peter Waters G3OJV's _Invisible HF Vertical_, which uses a 13ft vertical wire and ground radials; Greg KJ6ER's _POTA PERformer_ antenna, known for its raised vertical and reduced radial count; and ideas from Jim Heath W6LG and Frank K4FMH regarding telescoping whips on photographer's tripods. The resulting antenna combines a shortened portable design with a raised feedpoint and two raised radial wires, making it suitable for multiple bands. The construction incorporates a 4:1 impedance transformer, similar to a _Rybakov_ antenna, and necessitates an external tuner for optimal performance across the bands. This approach aims to minimize visual impact while still providing effective HF communication capabilities. VA3KOT built and field-tested this antenna, reporting positive results during POTA activations. The article provides practical insights into its design and operational considerations for fellow activators seeking discreet yet efficient portable setups.
