Establishing a robust, interconnected communication infrastructure across challenging terrain, the Island Trunk System (ITS) provides a network of open amateur radio repeaters for general and emergency communications throughout Vancouver Island, surrounding waters, and parts of the lower mainland on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada. This system, largely off-grid, relies on solar power and batteries, necessitating careful operation, especially during night hours and low solar charging seasons, to preserve its energy resources. Maintaining the ITS involves significant effort from many hams, who appreciate adherence to regulations, including proper station identification. The system hosts a weekly social net every Monday evening at 8 PM, welcoming all participants, and also supports a Vancouver Island Region Emergency Radio Net each Wednesday at 19:15. Experimental projects like the Newcastle Ridge webcams, linked via 5.8 GHz broadband backhaul over 206 km to Nanaimo and Comox, demonstrate the innovative spirit within the ITS community. A new VHF repeater, operating on 146.880 MHz with a 141.3 Hz PL tone, was installed in Tofino, expanding system coverage.

The 160-meter amateur radio band, spanning 1.8 to 2 MHz, was historically the lowest frequency amateur allocation until the introduction of the 630-meter and 2200-meter bands. ITU Region 1 allocates 1.81–2 MHz, while other regions use 1.8–2 MHz. This band, often called "Top Band" or "Gentleman's Band," was established by the International Radiotelegraph Conference in Washington, D.C., on October 4, 1927, with an initial allocation of 1.715–2 MHz. Effective operation on 160 meters presents significant challenges due to the large antenna sizes required; a quarter-wavelength monopole is over 130 feet, and horizontal dipoles need similar heights. Propagation is typically local during the day, but long-distance contacts are common at night, especially around sunrise and sunset, and during solar minimums. The band experienced a resurgence after the LORAN-A system was phased out in North America in December 1980, leading to the removal of power restrictions.

The _Fuji-OSCAR 20_ (FO-20) amateur radio satellite, launched over six years prior, continues to operate reliably, despite a gradual decrease in its Nickel-Cadmium storage battery capacity and solar cell degradation. The satellite's power system can still supply approximately **10 W**, enabling operations. During the non-eclipse period, typically from mid-June through March, the satellite experiences a 0% eclipse rate, ensuring sufficient power generation. This allows for the potential operation of the onboard BBS, which had been previously suspended due to concerns about power shortages. An "eclipse rate" refers to the proportion of time a satellite spends in the Earth's shadow during each orbit. When the satellite's orbital plane is perpendicular to the sun's direction, the eclipse ratio becomes zero, meaning continuous solar illumination. Understanding these eclipse periods is crucial for managing satellite power budgets and scheduling operations, particularly for power-intensive functions like the BBS, which can now be considered for activation during periods of sustained solar exposure.

The Butternut HF2V, originally a two-band vertical antenna for 80m and 40m, was enhanced by the user to include 30m and 20m bands for better digimode DX work during the solar minimum. The additions used components adapted from the HF6V and innovative methods for the 20m addition, either through a parallel vertical element or a lower-mounted independent element, minimizing band interaction. This modified four-band antenna now supports high power across popular HF bands using a single feedpoint.

This article discusses the potential for solar power systems to coexist harmoniously with amateur radio, challenging the notion that they are inherently incompatible. Drawing from personal experience, the author emphasizes the importance of selecting RF-quiet components, focusing on series-string Sunny Boy grid-tie inverters. The article also highlights considerations for system design and limitations based on roof orientation, shading, and array size. Overall, it presents a valuable perspective on creating a radio-friendly solar PV setup.

It examines various power supply types, including LiFePO4 batteries, lead-acid batteries, and supercapacitors, discussing their respective advantages and disadvantages for QRP and portable setups. The resource emphasizes practical considerations such as capacity, weight, discharge rates, and charging methods crucial for reliable off-grid operation. The article compares the energy density and cycle life of different battery chemistries, noting that LiFePO4 batteries offer significantly more cycles (e.g., **2000-5000 cycles**) compared to lead-acid batteries (e.g., **300-500 cycles**). It also touches upon the integration of solar panels for recharging and the importance of proper voltage regulation to protect sensitive radio equipment, providing insights into maximizing operational time during DXpeditions or POTA activations.

Protect your radio tower and solar charged battery power supply by sending the correct Morse code transmissions. Tap out alphanumeric characters in Morse code to prevent your radio station from being destroyed by the Morse code meteor attack! Meteors may be destroyed in any order. All levels start with a fully charged battery. Each DIT uses 1% battery power. Each DAH uses 3% battery power. Your battery charges at a nominal rate of 1% every 5 seconds, and total charge increases by 1% for every correct Morse code transmission. In addition, you have two solar panels that each contribute 1% to the battery charge rate. If your solar panels are destroyed, there are no replacements for that game. When your battery runs low, an SOS prosign bonus appears. Destroy this entity to recharge your battery.
