Demonstrates RadioComm, a freeware Icom transceiver/receiver controller program for Windows, which facilitates memory programming, spectrum analysis, and interfacing with extensive frequency databases. The software allows users to program their Icom radio's memory, generate radio-frequency spectra, and connect the radio to a computer-based frequency database. It supports various Icom models, offering bidirectional control where virtual controls mirror the transceiver's physical controls and vice versa. The program's spectrum analysis feature, exemplified by tuning the WWV time standard at 15 MHz, provides insights into the AM passband, a capability often found in high-end Icom transceivers. While RadioComm offers these functionalities, the author, Paul Lutus, notes that it has been superseded by JRX (a virtual radio) and IcomProgrammer II (a memory programming utility), which are described as superior and compatible with more platforms. RadioComm is available as a 516 KB self-extracting executable, requiring an Icom CT-17 RS-232 interface box for radios that need it. Users can also customize the plain-text database to include unsupported Icom models. However, the author explicitly states that no user support is provided for this free program.

The HotPaw Morse Code Decoder application for macOS processes audio input to transcribe Morse code characters into text. It presents both an audio spectrum graph and a tone amplitude graph, which aid in configuring a narrow band audio filter. Operators can set the audio filter for tone frequencies between 400 and 1600 Hz, optimizing reception for various CW signals. The software offers user-configurable settings, including WPM dot/dash speed detection, a noise threshold level, and the option to use Farnsworth timing for inter-character spacing. The Morse code WPM detection automatically adapts from approximately 8 to 40 WPM, with a lock feature for the estimated speed. A High Speed WPM Mode is available for code speeds ranging from 40 to 80 WPM, catering to faster CW operators. The application's decoding performance is influenced by signal level, signal-to-noise ratio, frequency and WPM stability, keying quality, and proper configuration, with an initial learning phase required for WPM estimation to stabilize. An external microphone or line-in may be necessary for optimal performance on some MacBook models to mitigate fan noise or room reverberations. Version 1.4.4, updated on November 11, 2021, includes compatibility improvements for newer macOS releases. The developer, Ronald Nicholson of HotPaw Productions, does not collect any user data from the application.

Mitigating impulse-type noise, a common challenge in the **HF radio spectrum**, often requires specialized processing before the signal reaches the transceiver's receiver stages. The NR-1 addresses this by functioning as an RF interference removal device, specifically a noise blanker, targeting transient noise sources. Its operational range extends from 1.6 MHz to beyond 70 MHz, making it suitable for various amateur radio bands and general shortwave listening applications. Unlike QRM eliminators or X-phasers, the NR-1 does not require a separate noise antenna for its operation, simplifying its integration into existing station setups. The device's design focuses on wideband performance, allowing its use both within and outside the allocated amateur radio frequencies. Documentation detailing its operation is available, providing insights into its technical specifications and deployment. This unit is a hardware product, conceptualized and implemented by SV3ORA.

Effective operation of amateur radio repeaters, particularly in high-density areas, relies on coordinated frequency assignments to prevent interference. This resource from the _Illinois Repeater Association_ (IRA) serves as the official frequency coordination body for the state of Illinois, providing essential information for repeater owners and users. It details coordination policies, guidelines, and application forms for new and existing repeaters, ensuring fair and consistent spectrum utilization. The site also includes a comprehensive band plan, last revised in 2006, and a selective access policy (PL/Squelch Plan) updated in 2015, which are critical for maintaining orderly operations. The IRA website offers various repeater directories, sortable by frequency, city, and region, including a dedicated section for digital systems. These directories are invaluable for hams traveling through Illinois or setting up new repeater projects, helping them identify available frequencies and coordinated systems. The resource also provides meeting minutes, newsletters, and links to other regional repeater councils, demonstrating its role in fostering inter-state coordination. This structured approach to frequency management helps ensure reliable communications and minimizes QRM across the state, supporting thousands of repeater contacts annually.

A homebrew spectrum analyzer, the Specan, provides a crucial measurement capability often missing from the typical amateur radio shack, allowing for detailed analysis of RF signals up to 70 MHz. This double-conversion superheterodyne receiver design incorporates 112 MHz and 12 MHz intermediate frequencies, utilizing an _Si570_ as the local oscillator for fine tuning down to 1 Hz steps. It offers two resolution bandwidths: 300 KHz for broad spectrum sweeps and 1 KHz for precise close-in distortion measurements, achieving an 80 dB spur-free dynamic range at 1 KHz resolution. The project, a reboot of the classic _W7ZOI/K7TAU_ design from November 1998 QST, integrates an _Arduino_ microcontroller for controlling the Si570, managing a front-panel LCD, and communicating with a PC for spectrum plotting. This approach significantly reduces cost compared to commercial units, making advanced RF diagnostics accessible to homebrewers. The Specan can measure carrier suppression, VFO cleanliness, antenna VSWR, transmitter harmonics, and filter passband shapes, providing insights beyond what an oscilloscope or frequency counter can offer. Construction emphasizes modularity and careful shielding, with each stage built and tested individually on unetched copper clad board. The design includes detailed instructions for integrating the Arduino, building the Si570 oscillator, and aligning the various modules, often using the Specan itself for calibration. It requires a well-regulated linear power supply and can be built with common tools and readily available components, making it a practical and rewarding endeavor for those looking to enhance their RF test bench.
