Coaxial cable stripping for PL-259 connectors requires precise measurements to ensure optimal RF performance and mechanical integrity. For RG-8X, the outer jacket is stripped 1/2 inch, the braid 5/16 inch, and the dielectric 1/8 inch, leaving the center conductor exposed. RG-58 preparation involves a 1/2 inch jacket strip, 1/4 inch braid strip, and 1/8 inch dielectric strip. These specific dimensions facilitate proper soldering and crimping, minimizing impedance discontinuities at the connector interface. Different coaxial cable types, such as RG-8 and RG-213, necessitate varied stripping lengths due to their construction. The _PL-259_ connector, a common UHF type, relies on these exact preparations for a secure fit and low-loss connection. Incorrect stripping can lead to high SWR, RF leakage, and mechanical failure, impacting overall station efficiency. The guide details these critical dimensions for several popular coax cables. Using a dedicated _coax stripper_ tool or precise measurements with a utility knife improves consistency.

DL7JV shares his practical experience building and testing capacitive antennas, initially skeptical of their performance compared to magnetic loops and mono-band dipoles. His interest was piqued after hearing a Spanish station running 100 Watts on 80 meters with a 1-meter Micro Vert, making DX contacts into PY and UA0, despite the antenna being only 4 meters high in a garden. This prompted DL7JV to investigate further, consulting resources from DL7PE and DL7AHW, the latter providing DOS programs like "Mitspule.exe" and "Spulenprg.zip" for calculating antenna dimensions and coil conversions. The article outlines the construction of two prototype antennas: one for 7.050 MHz using a 75mm PVC pipe and another for 3.550 MHz with a 110mm PVC pipe. Both designs feature aluminum foil condensers and coils wound from 1mm² H07V-K wire. DL7JV provides specific measurements for the condenser capacitance, surface area, diameter, height, coil inductance, turns, and wire length for both 40m and 80m versions, along with RG58 feedline lengths. Initial reception tests for the 7 MHz antenna, placed indoors, yielded impressive S9+5 signals from a German station compared to an S8 from a 42-meter roof-mounted loop, even hearing a Japanese station. Transmission attempts on April 4, 2004, despite moderate solar storm conditions, resulted in successful QSOs on 7 MHz with EA5OT (579/559) and on 3.5 MHz with YT1NT (579/559) and G4KKI (579/559) using 100 Watts. DL7JV notes the antenna's sensitivity to coordination and feedline layout, suggesting a modification from DL7AXO involving a 500pF fixed capacitor and coil tap for improved SWR stability. He concludes that while the capacitive antenna is space-saving and performs well for reception and 100W transmission indoors, its transmit performance doesn't yet match larger antennas, with further outdoor field tests planned. DL7JV also intends to build a 1.8 MHz version.

A 10-meter half-wave vertical antenna, designed by Thomas 4L/G8BAG, offers a practical solution for hams with limited space and materials. This "flower pot" design utilizes common hardware store items such as 60mm plastic drain pipes and 75 Ohm coax cable, demonstrating that effective HF operation doesn't require specialized components. The author details the coax preparation, including stripping the outer sleeve and braid at specific measurements like **2510 mm** and 2450 mm, and integrating it into the pipe structure. The construction emphasizes simplicity and low cost, providing an accessible path to getting on the air on the 10m band, especially when a horizontal beam is not feasible. The article notes an SWR of _1.5:1_ with 75 Ohm coax, managed by an MFJ 258 for impedance matching. This temporary solution proved robust, withstanding various weather conditions and achieving contacts across continents, including W, VK, BG, G, JA, and VR2, using 100W SSB from Georgia.

Constructed in May 2008, this innovative 4m tall electrically full-size halfwave vertical dipole, tunable to multiple bands, offers HF coverage despite its space-saving design. Inspired by cost-effective DIY alternatives, the antenna design departs from conventional center-fed approaches, utilizing asymmetrical dimensions. Despite resonance challenges, the antenna's performance remains viable, boasting broad bandwidth and adaptability, as demonstrated through SWR measurements and EZNEC predictions.

Demonstrates the ZS6BKW multiband HF antenna, a design by ZS6BKW (G0GSF) that improves upon the G5RV by offering direct resonance on multiple bands without an antenna tuner. The resource details the antenna's 90-foot length and 40-foot 450-ohm twin lead downlead, emphasizing its suitability for hams with limited space or budget. It covers both horizontal and inverted-V configurations, noting the inverted-V's single-support advantage and the importance of maintaining an apex angle of at least 90 degrees to prevent signal cancellation. The author, G3UKV, shares his preference for 450-ohm twin lead over 300-ohm due to its superior strength and lower losses, especially in wet conditions, drawing from his extensive field experience. The document presents recorded SWR and impedance (R) measurements taken with an MFJ Antenna Analyzer, confirming excellent performance on 40m, 20m, 17m, 12m, 10m, and 6m, often with SWRs below 1.3:1. It also discusses the antenna's tunability on 80m with an ATU and suggests a method for 160m operation. G3UKV recounts receiving "excellent reports" on 7 MHz and 14 MHz, validating the antenna's effectiveness. Practical advice includes keeping antenna ends clear of ground by at least a yard to avoid detuning and the recommendation of a 1:1 current balun where the 450-ohm feeder connects to 50-ohm coax.

Constructing a 5-element quad antenna, the author aimed for low cost and simplicity, resulting in an effective design with 11 dBi gain and SWR of 2:1 or better across the 2-meter band. Using wood and dowels, the antenna costs under $8 and takes less than two hours to build with basic tools. The model predicts excellent performance, confirmed by ARRL Lab measurements. Practical field results demonstrate improved communication, even in simplex mode.

The project details the construction of a portable multiband mobile antenna, designed for rapid deployment with an _Elecraft KX3_ for /M operations. The resource includes a parts list and construction steps, making it reproducible for other radio amateurs.

Constructing a double bazooka antenna for the UHF band, specifically tuned for 435 MHz, involves a straightforward process detailed with step-by-step imagery. The design leverages readily available _RG213 coaxial cable_, cut to precise lengths derived from formulas: 140.208 / F (MHz) for the radiating element and 99.06 / F (MHz) for the coaxial section. This approach yields a highly effective vertical polarization antenna, suitable for local ragchewing or repeater access. My own field experience with similar coaxial designs confirms their robustness and ease of deployment. The article emphasizes critical steps like short-circuiting cable extremities, interrupting the braid at the center, and securing an insulating support. It also covers preparing the definitive mounting with a quality feedline, noting that RG58 is acceptable for temporary use but better options exist for permanent installations. Weatherproofing is crucial for longevity, achieved through PVC electrician's tube, glue, and heat-shrink tubing. The final assembly is designed for mounting on a small aluminum mast, with the feedline routed internally. The reported SWR measurement is very satisfactory, showing approximately **+/- 3%** HF return, indicating excellent impedance matching at the target frequency.

A homebrew spectrum analyzer, the Specan, provides a crucial measurement capability often missing from the typical amateur radio shack, allowing for detailed analysis of RF signals up to 70 MHz. This double-conversion superheterodyne receiver design incorporates 112 MHz and 12 MHz intermediate frequencies, utilizing an _Si570_ as the local oscillator for fine tuning down to 1 Hz steps. It offers two resolution bandwidths: 300 KHz for broad spectrum sweeps and 1 KHz for precise close-in distortion measurements, achieving an 80 dB spur-free dynamic range at 1 KHz resolution. The project, a reboot of the classic _W7ZOI/K7TAU_ design from November 1998 QST, integrates an _Arduino_ microcontroller for controlling the Si570, managing a front-panel LCD, and communicating with a PC for spectrum plotting. This approach significantly reduces cost compared to commercial units, making advanced RF diagnostics accessible to homebrewers. The Specan can measure carrier suppression, VFO cleanliness, antenna VSWR, transmitter harmonics, and filter passband shapes, providing insights beyond what an oscilloscope or frequency counter can offer. Construction emphasizes modularity and careful shielding, with each stage built and tested individually on unetched copper clad board. The design includes detailed instructions for integrating the Arduino, building the Si570 oscillator, and aligning the various modules, often using the Specan itself for calibration. It requires a well-regulated linear power supply and can be built with common tools and readily available components, making it a practical and rewarding endeavor for those looking to enhance their RF test bench.

Addresses the common challenge of constructing effective dual-band antennas for VHF/UHF operations, specifically detailing a J-pole design. It covers the theoretical underpinnings, including calculations for quarter-wavelength radiator and stub sections, accounting for velocity factor and design frequency. The resource provides practical construction guidance using readily available materials like TV twin lead and coaxial cable, culminating in an antenna with a total length of approximately 52 inches. Performance metrics are presented, showing a measured SWR of 1.7:1 or better across most of the 2-meter band and less than 2:1 across the 70-cm band. These SWR measurements, referenced to 50-ohm impedance, were taken at the transmitter end of the feed line. The article also touches upon the necessity of a balun for proper impedance matching between the balanced J-pole and unbalanced coaxial feed line, suggesting a split-core cylindrical ferrite for this purpose.

The F6AOJ RX splitter project was created to split the antenna signal from an LZ1AQ receive loop to multiple receivers, such as radios or SDRs. The design is simple to build and effective. The splitter, mounted on the back of the LZ1AQ control board, provides two outputs—one for an Afedri SDR and another for a K3 transceiver. Measurements show a damping of -3.01 dB at 1 MHz and -3.10 dB at 30 MHz, with a low SWR (max 1.07 at 30 MHz and 1.4 at 60 MHz).

Effective suppression of harmonics and parasitic radiation from HF transmitters is crucial, especially with the increasing sensitivity of VHF/UHF radio channels to interference. This project details a hybrid low-pass filter (LPF) designed to operate across the HF bands up to 51 MHz, making it suitable for 6-meter band operations while providing deep VHF/UHF suppression. The design addresses the challenge of modern interference landscapes, where even microvolt-level signals can disrupt wireless sensors and other simple VHF/UHF receivers. The filter utilizes a single elliptic link, combining high cutoff steepness with robust suppression in the hundreds of megahertz range. A key feature is the use of only two standard capacitor values, simplifying construction and component sourcing. The article provides a detailed schematic, performance characteristics, and _RFSim99_ model file, demonstrating a reflection coefficient S11 below 0.017 (VSWR < 1.03) across 1-51 MHz, ensuring minimal degradation to the antenna system. Construction notes include coil winding specifications and capacitor selection guidance, with recommendations for _FR-4_ assembly. Two capacitor sets are presented, with the first variant recommended for its lower RF current demands, keeping currents below 3 A at 1 kW passing power at 51 MHz. Fine-tuning involves adjusting frameless coils, with considerations for capacitor tolerance and high-frequency capacitance measurement accuracy.

This report details a modification of a Diamond V2000 antenna, replacing its original two 0.50 m radials with two 1.55 m radials. Initial M5-threaded rods failed to fit; the housing required M6 threads. Custom radials were made using 8 mm OD aluminium tubing and M6-threaded stainless steel ends, secured with nuts machined to 9 mm. SWR issues on 6 m (>2:1) were largely due to a poor counterpoise connection, resolved during reassembly. NanoVNA measurements showed no adverse effects on 2 m or 70 cm. The final setup retains the two 1.55 m radials and original counterpoise. Other operators reported SWR degradation with similar mods—sometimes fixed by adding capacitance—but this was not observed here.

Constructing a 4:1 Guanella current balun involves cross-connecting two 1:1 current baluns. At the low-impedance end, transmission lines from each balun are connected in parallel, while at the high-impedance end, they are connected in series. This configuration allows the device to achieve a 1:4 impedance ratio, effectively transforming a 200-ohm load to 50 ohms. The balun described utilizes **FT240-43 toroids** wound with 2.5mm2 twisted pair cable for 8 turns, intended for use with a 20m **Deltaloop antenna**. Measurements performed with a 200-ohm resistor demonstrate satisfactory VSWR and impedance characteristics across the HF bands. The article compares the performance of 2.5mm2 cable versus 1mm enameled wire, recommending the former for superior efficiency. Emphasis is placed on maintaining short core-terminal connections to optimize performance. Additional considerations include the option of integrating a separate Common Mode Choke (CMC) for enhanced common mode current suppression, especially if the balun's inherent suppression is not prioritized.
