Demonstrates the Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) as a radio-based system for real-time tactical data exchange, leveraging the internet for messages, alerts, and bulletins to enhance situational awareness. It explains how APRS displays data on a map, integrating objects with GPS coordinates, weather stations, and alerts, clarifying its primary function as vehicle tracking despite broader capabilities. The document traces APRS development from the late 1980s by Bob Bruninga, WB6APR, through its evolution from Connectionless Emergency Traffic System (CETS) to Automatic Position Reporting System, and finally to Automatic Packet Reporting System with widespread GPS availability. Specific functionalities covered include real-time position and status reporting, message and bulletin exchange, weather data, DF bearings, RF connectivity plots, and local object display. Newer features like Global Email, CQSRVR, APRStt (APRS touchtone) for DTMF-based position reporting on frequencies like 146.58 MHz, and AVRS (Automatic Voice Relay System) for callsign-to-callsign linking via Echolink or IRLP, particularly with transceivers like the D710, are detailed. The resource also mentions AI-FI (APRS WIFI) for laptop integration and the use of the AX.25 protocol on 144.390 MHz in North America. It further describes the role of digipeaters and Internet Gateway stations (IGates) in transporting packets and connecting the on-air APRS network to the APRS Internet System (APRS-IS). The document explains APRS as a random ALOHA network, emphasizing channel loading considerations.

HamStream, a versatile ham radio control software, integrates real-time DX cluster data directly into the operator's workflow, eliminating the need for constant alt-tabbing. As an Extra Class operator, I appreciate how it instantly displays callsign, country, distance, bearing, and QRZ profile data for spotted stations, mirroring the efficiency of a well-organized shack. The software acts as a comprehensive radio controller, reading frequency, mode, and S-meter in real time from connected rigs, supporting CAT via serial, CI-V, _HAMLIB_, and direct connections to _FlexRadio SmartSDR_ and Apache Labs ANAN (via Thetis). Key features include instant QRZ lookups, distance and bearing calculations with a live great-circle minimap, and favorite alerts for specific callsigns. The one-click logging functionality is particularly useful, populating callsign, frequency, and mode into _N1MM+_, Log4OM, DXKeeper, Logger32, StationMaster Pro, and Ham Radio Deluxe via UDP, streamlining contest and casual logging alike. Its smart radio auto-detection for port, baud rate, and model simplifies setup, a welcome relief from manual configuration. Beyond core operating, HamStream also displays 'Also on this frequency' information and can tune the radio to spotted frequencies, enhancing situational awareness. For those who stream their operations, it offers an OBS overlay with live viewer counts and chat integration, making it a compelling tool for modern amateur radio engagement.

The FF-501DX LPF, a high-performance VHF and 10m filter, was obtained at a friend's SK sale. After becoming more active on 10m, the author reexamined the LPF and discovered it to be of high quality. The filter's efficiency was outstanding and the return loss/VSWR was better than estimated. The LPF was connected to a Bird 50R dummy load to evaluate insert loss, cutoff, attenuation over 70MHz, and return loss. The original specifications were found in an old radio magazine, along with a link to the original one-page information sheet. Comparing the results to the original specs confirms the LPF's quality.

Early 20th-century transatlantic wireless communication efforts involved distinct technical approaches by Reginald Fessenden and Guglielmo Marconi. Marconi's systems, operational until approximately 1912, primarily utilized _spark technology_ for wireless telegraphy, facilitating Morse code communication between ships and across oceans. His Poldhu station in December 1901 radiated signals in the MF band around 850 kHz, later evolving to 272 kHz in October 1902, and eventually 45 kHz by late 1907 with increasingly larger antenna structures like the pyramidal monopole and capacitive top-loaded arrays. Fessenden, conversely, focused on _continuous wave transmission_ for wireless telephony, recognizing its necessity for speech. His transatlantic experiments in 1906 employed synchronous rotary-spark-gap transmitters and 420-foot umbrella top-loaded antennas at Brant Rock, MA, and Machrihanish, Scotland, tuned to approximately 80 kHz. Fessenden later utilized the _Alexanderson HF alternator_ at 75 kHz by late 1906 for pure CW transmission, integrating a carbon microphone for amplitude modulation. Receiver technology also differed, with Marconi initially relying on untuned coherer-type detectors, later developing the magnetic detector in 1902, while Fessenden's CW approach necessitated more advanced detection methods.

This page describes a project involving repurposing the Weathalert receiver for controlling a radio club's beacon system remotely. The author details the modifications made to the receiver, including changing the crystal frequency and adding a DTMF decode chip and PIC for remote control. The project aims to enable the turning off of beacons to prevent interference, with plans to control each beacon and the Packet Radio digi. The article provides insights into the technical aspects of modifying the receiver and showcases the author's experimentation with different crystals for optimal performance.

The LY4A DX Reminder application monitors five distinct DX cluster sources—DXScape, DXSummit, DXHeat, PSK Reporter, and Reverse Beacon—to alert amateur radio operators when a specific call sign appears. It supports a wide range of bands from 160 meters to 70 centimeters, including 60m, 6m, 2m, and 70cm, accommodating **CW**, SSB, FT8, FT4, and RTTY modes. The software operates in the background, checking clusters at user-defined intervals of 1, 5, 10, or 30 minutes, and persists across device restarts. Alarm functionality is robust, activating even if the mobile device is silenced, by utilizing the alarm channel and illuminating the locked screen. On desktop platforms, notifications remain active in the system tray. Users can directly manage alarms—stopping, snoozing, or deleting them—from the notification interface, enhancing operational flexibility during DX pursuits. Available in 15 languages, including English, Italian, German, and Spanish, the application is provided free of charge and without advertisements. It offers optional donation support for continued development. Installation instructions are detailed for Android, Windows 10/11 (64-bit), and macOS 12+, addressing common system security prompts for unsigned applications.

HAMgpt offers a personalized amateur radio experience, leveraging AI to provide real-time operational guidance. It integrates live propagation data, current band conditions, and operator-specific context, including callsign, QTH, license class, and station equipment, to deliver relevant answers. The system can identify open HF, VHF, and UHF bands, suggest workable DXpeditions and POTA/SOTA activations, and provide accurate repeater offsets and CTCSS/DCS tones for local repeaters. Unlike general-purpose chatbots, HAMgpt avoids fabricating frequencies or license privileges, instead relying on actual data for its responses. It supports antenna design calculations for various types like Yagi, dipole, vertical, and magnetic loop antennas, offering to-scale dimensions. The platform also assists with license exam preparation and provides satellite pass predictions tailored to the user's location. It supports multiple countries, including the United States (FCC Technician, General, Extra), Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and Argentina, incorporating their specific band plans and power limits.
