For amateur radio operators utilizing _APRS_ or requiring an external antenna for their GPS receiver, this resource details the construction of a compact, circularly polarized mobile antenna. The design is based on a classic turnstile configuration, employing two dipoles rotated 90° from each other and spaced a quarter-wavelength above a ground plane. A parallel-plate transmission line, fabricated from printed circuit board material, serves as both the connection method and mounting post for the dipoles, simplifying the feed network for circular polarization at 1.57542 GHz. The article outlines the fabrication process, starting with a 4-inch diameter hobby tin or brass base plate and #14 solid copper wire elements. It specifies using _RG-58/U_ or similar 50-ohm coax, with an 8-foot maximum length to minimize loss at the GPS frequency. The parallel-plate transmission line is constructed from two 2-inch lengths of single-sided _FR-4_ or G10 PCB material, 0.062-inch thick, with a specific 45° microwave turn cut on the active side. Final assembly involves an 8-ounce cream cheese container as a radome, and the article discusses the self-phased quadrature feed method to achieve circular polarization without a coaxial phasing line, resulting in an omnidirectional pattern suitable for GPS satellite reception.

Demonstrates adapting the _Moxon rectangle_ antenna design for 2-meter VHF operation, highlighting its unique characteristics for specific applications. It details how the antenna's small size and distinctive far-field pattern, typically associated with HF, can be effectively utilized on VHF. The resource provides modeled dimensions for three different element diameters (1/4", 1/2", 1") and discusses the necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance, such as gap spacing and element lengths, to achieve a 50-Ohm feedpoint impedance. The article presents predicted performance data, including gain (dBi), front-to-back ratio (dB), and feedpoint impedance (R, jX) across 144, 146, and 148 MHz. It analyzes free-space azimuth patterns and discusses the antenna's behavior when horizontally and vertically polarized over ground, including its suitability for fixed installations, repeater applications, and even satellite communications. Construction considerations, such as bending elements and maintaining critical gap distances, are also addressed. Furthermore, the content explores advanced configurations like using two back-to-back rectangles for broader coverage and a crossed-Moxon setup for circular polarization, suggesting potential for urban communication and satellite work. The author, _L. B. Cebik, W4RNL_, emphasizes the Moxon's strengths in broad bandwidth, wide beamwidth, and high front-to-back ratio, rather than maximum gain.

Constructing a Lindenblad antenna for 137MHz NOAA satellite reception involves specific design considerations for optimal performance. The resource details the use of 4mm galvanised steel fencing wire, 300-ohm television ribbon cable, and wood/plastic components for the antenna structure. Key dimensions for a 137.58MHz-resonant antenna are provided, derived from the ARRL Satellite Handbook, specifying s, l, w, and d as 42, 926, 893, and 654mm respectively. The antenna is designed for Right Hand Circularly Polarised (RHCP) signals, requiring the four folded dipole elements to be tilted clockwise by 30 degrees. A significant aspect covered is impedance matching between the antenna's 75-ohm impedance and a typical 50-ohm receiver input. A twelfth-wave matching transformer, constructed from 117mm sections of 50-ohm RG-58 and 75-ohm RG-59 coax with a 0.66 velocity factor, is described. The article also addresses coaxial cable and connector selection, recommending 75-ohm Type-N connectors for RG-6 cable in professional setups and F56/F59 connectors for general use, while strongly advising against PL-259/SO-259 connectors for VHF. Strategies for mitigating Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) are discussed, including antenna placement to shield from local TV transmitters and the use of commercial or DIY band-pass filters, such as cavity resonators or helical notch filters, along with ferrite chokes on coaxial cables. Antenna orientation is explored, noting the Lindenblad's 'cone of silence' directly overhead and its maximized sensitivity towards the horizon. An experimental vertical tilt of 90 degrees is presented as a method to improve overhead reception and reduce interference from strong horizontal signals, particularly relevant in high RFI environments like the Siding Spring Observatory site.

Investigates the gain characteristics of the **axial-mode helix antenna**, a widely used circularly-polarized antenna, by addressing conflicting claims in amateur literature regarding its performance. This article summarizes an extensive numerical modeling study using **NEC-2** to simulate approximately 10,000 different helical antenna configurations, systematically varying physical parameters like length and turn radius. The study consumed around 3,000 hours of compute cycles, with each antenna model utilizing between 600 and 1,400 segments for accuracy. The modeling data were rigorously compared against professional antenna literature, including experimental and theoretical work, revealing that the original Kraus formula for gain is often overly optimistic, predicting gains up to 4 or 5 dB higher than observed. Empirical expressions are provided for the maximum possible gain, Gmax(dB) = 10.25 + 1.22 L - 0.0726 L^2, and the optimum turn radius, Rmax = 0.2025 - 0.0079 L + 0.000515 L^2, both valid for antenna lengths (L) between 2 and 7 wavelengths. The research also notes that a half-lambda square groundplane performs nearly as well as an infinite groundplane, while radials incur a gain penalty of about 3.5 dB.

A fractional bandwidth of up to 30:1 characterizes spiral antennas, making them highly effective across a very wide frequency range, often from 1 GHz to 30 GHz. The resource details two primary types: the **Log-Periodic Spiral Antenna** and the **Archimedean Spiral Antenna**, defining each with specific polar functions and illustrating their planar configurations. It explains that spiral antennas are typically circularly polarized, with a Half-Power Beamwidth (HPBW) of approximately 70-90 degrees, and a peak radiation direction perpendicular to the spiral plane. The content elaborates on critical design parameters affecting radiation, including the total length (outer radius) for lowest frequency, the flare rate ('a' constant) for optimal radiation versus capacitive behavior, the feed structure (often an infinite balun) for high-frequency operation, and the number of turns (typically 1.5 to 3 turns). It also discusses the theoretical impedance of 188 Ohms for Log-Periodic spirals, derived from Babinet's Principle, noting actual impedances are often 100-150 Ohms. The article presents a simple construction method for an Archimedean spiral, demonstrating VSWR and efficiency measurements. Measurements from a constructed spiral antenna show a VSWR that is fairly constant across the band, albeit with a mismatch loss of about 3 dB. The antenna efficiency remains around -5 dB (31.6%) across its operating range, indicating a decent wideband radiator despite opportunities for optimization.

Chavdar Levkov, LZ1AQ, presents an experimental comparison of small wideband magnetic loops, building on his previous work on wideband active small magnetic loop antennas. His research focuses on increasing loop sensitivity by maximizing the short-circuit current, which is directly tied to the "loop factor" M = A/L, where A is the equivalent loop area and L is its inductance. Levkov's methodology involves reducing inductance and increasing area through parallel or coplanar crossed (CC) configurations, comparing these designs against a reference single quad loop of 1 m2 area. Experimental verification included testing three distinct loop types: a simple quad loop, two coplanar crossed (CC) loops, and eight parallel loops, all designed to have a total geometric area of 1 m2. Measurements were conducted at 1.8, 3.5, 7, and 10 MHz using a small transmitter 270 meters away, with a Perseus direct sampling receiver for precise signal level assessment. The results consistently showed that CC loops, particularly Loop 5 (two CC circular loops with 1.44 m2 total area), yielded significantly higher currents, up to 9.1 dB over the reference loop at 3.5 MHz, validating M as a reliable predictor of loop sensitivity. Numerical simulations using MMANA further corroborated the experimental findings, demonstrating an almost perfect correlation between the calculated M factor and the induced loop current for 15 different loop models. Levkov concludes that CC loops offer superior sensitivity for a given loop area, while parallel loops are advantageous for minimizing physical volume. Practical recommendations suggest using loops with an M factor greater than 0.5 uA/pT for quiet rural environments, and he provides a spreadsheet tool, WLoop_calc.xls, to aid in optimizing loop configurations for specific operational needs.

Understanding radio wave propagation is fundamental for effective HF communication, and this guide from the Galway Radio Club elucidates the principles behind _Near Vertical Incidence Skywave_ (NVIS) operation. It begins by contrasting NVIS with line-of-sight and surface wave propagation, highlighting its utility for reliable regional coverage, particularly in challenging terrains or within the skip zone. The document explains how NVIS leverages high-angle radiation, refracting signals from the ionosphere to return to Earth within a circular region, typically up to **650 km** (400 miles) from the transmitter. The guide delves into critical factors influencing NVIS, such as the _critical frequency_ (Fo) and the Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF), emphasizing their dependence on solar activity, time of day, and season. It provides practical advice on frequency selection, noting that 40 meters is often the highest daytime NVIS band, with 60 meters and 80 meters favored as darkness falls. The author, EI5DD, suggests using an ionogram for real-time propagation data, considering it more reliable than generic ham-clocks. Antenna considerations are also covered, recommending dipoles, inverted vees, or phased dipoles positioned 0.1 to 0.25 wavelengths above ground for optimal high-angle radiation. The document mentions mobile NVIS setups, including military configurations and commercial options like the Barrett Communications roof-rack antenna, which can cost around **£2000.00**. It concludes by reinforcing NVIS as an essential technique for national emergency communications, with 5 MHz (60m) and 80 meters being primary bands for daytime and nighttime operations, respectively.

Operating amateur radio satellites presents unique challenges, particularly concerning antenna design and signal propagation. Juan Antonio Fernández Montaña, EA4CYQ, recounts his three-year journey into satellite communication, starting with initial guidance from EB4DKA. His early experiments involved a portable 1/4 wave VHF antenna with four 1/4 wave ground planes, designed for hand-held use to adjust polarity. This setup, paired with an FT-3000M transceiver, allowed full-duplex operation on **VHF** transmit and **UHF** receive, proving effective for early contacts on satellites like AO27, UO14, and SO35. EA4CYQ's experience highlights the critical role of coaxial cable loss and antenna polarization. After encountering significant signal degradation with longer RG213 runs, he experimented with a 1/2 inch commercial cable, noting improved reception but persistent fading due to varying satellite polarities. This led to the construction of an **Eggbeater II** antenna, an omnidirectional UHF design offering horizontal polarization at the horizon and circular right polarization at higher elevation angles. Subsequent modifications resulted in the directional **TPM2** antenna, which provided sufficient gain for LEO satellites with a wide 30-degree lobe, enabling consistent contacts from his home station. The article concludes with practical insights on the performance of the Eggbeater II for both UHF and VHF, and the TPM2 for UHF, emphasizing their utility for portable and fixed operations. EA4CYQ's journey underscores the iterative process of antenna development and the importance of adapting designs to overcome real-world propagation challenges in satellite communications.
