A 1/4 wavelength resonator design for dual-band VHF/UHF operation is presented, focusing on a robust mobile antenna construction. The design prioritizes stability against environmental influences over raw gain, making it suitable for general use rather than marginal signal areas. It details the antenna's two sections: a UHF-resonant lower conductor and an upper coil functioning as an RF choke for UHF and an inductance enhancer for VHF, forming a resonant circuit. Detailed mechanical structure and material considerations are provided, including the use of a PL-259 plug base, 2mm copper rod, and PVC faucet tube for the coil form. The guide outlines a precise construction procedure, from soldering the copper rod to the PL-259 to winding the 22 SWG laminated wire for the VHF section. Tuning involves careful cutting of the UHF section and adjusting the coil length and pitch for VHF, using a reflectometer and temporary ground planes. Furthermore, the resource describes converting the mobile antenna for base station application by constructing a dual-band ground plane system. This involves using electrical conduit, EMT connectors, SO-239 sockets, and a 4-inch round-pan with threaded stainless steel rods as ground elements. Practical test results indicate optimal lengths of **70mm** for UHF and **350mm** for VHF ground elements, with a recommendation to cut rods with _30mm_ extra length for fine-tuning.

This six-minute BBC production, transcribed into an MP3 file by Peter Carney, offers a rare auditory glimpse into the company's legacy, highlighting its role in supplying equipment to police, ministries, and expatriate British workers. The community aspect thrives through shared experiences, like Roger Trickett's anecdote about his Eddystone EC10, which has been continuously powered for 50 of its 54 years, traveling across continents and enduring various modifications. Another intriguing account from Roy GM4VKI details the "S640 Identity Crisis," where a seemingly standard S640 receiver turned out to be a masterfully engineered 80/20-meter SSB transceiver built into the original chassis by GI3ZX, showcasing incredible ingenuity from a bygone era of amateur radio.

Constructing a basic multimeter involves integrating a 0-1mA meter movement with various shunts and multipliers, selected via a switch, to create a versatile instrument capable of measuring DC volts, current, and resistance. The design outlines two main units: a primary unit handling six DC current ranges up to 1 amp and eight DC voltage ranges up to 1000 volts, alongside an internal battery for an ohms range up to 200,000 ohms. This approach allows for a practical, hands-on understanding of meter operation. An add-on unit further extends the multimeter's capabilities, incorporating a meter rectifier and switched series resistors to provide four AC voltage ranges up to 100 volts. Additional shunt and series resistors, designated Ra and Rb, are included to expand the instrument's range to 10A and 5kV, demonstrating how modular design can enhance functionality. When this add-on is in use, the main instrument is set to measure 1mA FSD, connecting via specific lugs. Component selection emphasizes precision, with 1% tolerance high stability resistors for series elements and Eureka resistance wire for shunts. The design specifies values calculated for a meter with 60 ohms internal resistance, noting that these would require modification for different meter characteristics. Experimental adjustment of shunt values is recommended to ensure accurate readings against a calibrated reference meter, reinforcing practical calibration techniques.

Developing operational amateur radio equipment for the 134 GHz band presents significant technical challenges, particularly in frequency generation and stability. This resource details the construction of a 134 GHz system, outlining its architecture with separate transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) modules, each employing a local oscillator (LO) and RF head units. The system utilizes a dual Flann 50 GHz lens-type horn antenna configuration for optimal signal coupling. The transmit path incorporates an LMX2541 synthesizer chip operating at approximately 2.8 GHz, referenced by a 10 MHz double-oven Morion OCXO for exceptional stability. This signal is multiplied through a series of stages (X4, then X2) to generate a 22.4 GHz signal, which subsequently drives a dual series diode multiplier to produce the final X6 signal for 134 GHz operation. The receive side features an anti-parallel diode mixer coupled to a 144 MHz transceiver via a preamplifier, ensuring effective downconversion. Operational mode is CW, achieved by keying a multiplier stage. The project includes images of the Tx and Rx head units and describes a successful 3.5 km test with G8ACE, demonstrating stable signal tones due to PLLs locked to OCXOs at both ends, confirming the system's robust performance.

Clarifies the intricate process of calibrating the _Elecraft K2_ dial, addressing common user challenges and lively discussions on the Elecraft reflector. Wilhelm, W3FPR, dissects the K2's PLL synthesizer design, chosen for its low phase noise, kit-friendly duplication, and cost-effective components. The resource emphasizes the critical role of the 4000.000 kHz reference oscillator's accuracy during CAL PLL, CAL FIL, and CAL FCTR functions, noting its dependence on temperature and crystal stability for optimal performance. Explaining the K2's frequency display, the document reveals it relies on microprocessor-driven look-up tables generated by CAL PLL for VFO values and CAL FIL for BFO values. In SSB and RTTY, these combine, while CW and CWr modes also factor in the sidetone pitch. The author details inherent limitations, such as the 10 Hz increment resolution of the dial and varying PLL step sizes—from 3 Hz on 160 meters to 10 Hz on 10 meters. BFO increments range from 20 to 35 Hz, collectively limiting practical dial accuracy to within **20 Hz** with diligent effort, or **30 Hz** for a slightly less demanding task. The guide outlines a four-step calibration procedure: setting the reference oscillator, running CAL PLL, running CAL FIL, and setting all BFOs. It highlights the _N6KR Method_ as a particularly easy and accurate approach, requiring only the K2 and a known frequency source like WWV for zero-beating, eliminating the need for external test equipment.

DL7JV shares his practical experience building and testing capacitive antennas, initially skeptical of their performance compared to magnetic loops and mono-band dipoles. His interest was piqued after hearing a Spanish station running 100 Watts on 80 meters with a 1-meter Micro Vert, making DX contacts into PY and UA0, despite the antenna being only 4 meters high in a garden. This prompted DL7JV to investigate further, consulting resources from DL7PE and DL7AHW, the latter providing DOS programs like "Mitspule.exe" and "Spulenprg.zip" for calculating antenna dimensions and coil conversions. The article outlines the construction of two prototype antennas: one for 7.050 MHz using a 75mm PVC pipe and another for 3.550 MHz with a 110mm PVC pipe. Both designs feature aluminum foil condensers and coils wound from 1mm² H07V-K wire. DL7JV provides specific measurements for the condenser capacitance, surface area, diameter, height, coil inductance, turns, and wire length for both 40m and 80m versions, along with RG58 feedline lengths. Initial reception tests for the 7 MHz antenna, placed indoors, yielded impressive S9+5 signals from a German station compared to an S8 from a 42-meter roof-mounted loop, even hearing a Japanese station. Transmission attempts on April 4, 2004, despite moderate solar storm conditions, resulted in successful QSOs on 7 MHz with EA5OT (579/559) and on 3.5 MHz with YT1NT (579/559) and G4KKI (579/559) using 100 Watts. DL7JV notes the antenna's sensitivity to coordination and feedline layout, suggesting a modification from DL7AXO involving a 500pF fixed capacitor and coil tap for improved SWR stability. He concludes that while the capacitive antenna is space-saving and performs well for reception and 100W transmission indoors, its transmit performance doesn't yet match larger antennas, with further outdoor field tests planned. DL7JV also intends to build a 1.8 MHz version.

The _G3TSO_ Mobile Antenna Page details construction and tuning methods for mobile antennas operating across **10 to 160 metres**. The content describes a Hustler-based design, optimized for RF performance and vehicle speeds, featuring centre loading. For optimal operation on various bands, the loading coil placement requires clearance from the vehicle body. Antenna resonance is critical for efficient mobile operation. A mobile antenna's base impedance may be as low as 27 ohms, requiring specific matching to achieve maximum radiation, as a minimum SWR at the transmitter does not always indicate resonance or maximum output. Tuning involves physical adjustment of antenna length to achieve resonance at the operating frequency. The _G3TSO_ page outlines a tuning procedure utilizing a low-power signal source and a field strength meter to identify maximum radiation before impedance matching. Loading coil placement, either at the base, center, or top of the antenna, influences radiation efficiency and mechanical stability for mobile installations. Centre-loaded whips, such as the Hustler design, offer a compromise between efficiency and stability, often for single-band operation. Helically wound antennas, including those for **28 MHz**, may present base impedances around 17 ohms, resulting in a 3:1 SWR at resonance. Low resistance grounding at the antenna base is also specified for optimizing performance and minimizing RFI during mobile operation. DXZone Focus: Mobile | Any | Antenna Tuning | HF
