It covers wire gauge selection, suggesting 14 to 24 AWG for general use, with heavier gauges (14-20 AWG) for permanent outdoor installations. Guidance is provided for various deployment scenarios, including indoor setups where the wire can be run around a room, temporary outdoor installations from balconies using light 18-24 AWG wire, and permanent outdoor configurations requiring higher placement and slack for tree movement. Feeding methods are discussed, recommending coaxial cable (50-75 ohms) to mitigate man-made interference, with instructions for connecting only the center conductor to the longwire. Safety precautions are highlighted, particularly avoiding contact with power lines and conductive materials, and managing static electricity buildup by unplugging the antenna after use and bleeding off charges before connection. The article also advises against using outdoor longwires during thunderstorms or snowstorms due to static and lightning risks. Optimal height considerations are presented, advocating for the highest safe placement, ideally a couple of feet above underlying structures, to maintain free air space. The text mentions a personal setup with one end at a roof peak (20 feet) and the other at a 17-foot mast, illustrating practical deployment without strict height requirements beyond safety and clearance.

This resource details the four primary functions of a ground system: lightning energy dispersion, equipment safety, RF return path provision for end-fed antennas, and management of induced RF currents. It clarifies that a ground system's effectiveness varies depending on its specific function, noting that a good lightning ground might not be an effective RF ground. The content emphasizes that proper antenna system design, including baluns and appropriate feedline lengths, often negates the need for an RF station ground to mitigate common mode currents or RFI in the shack. The article quantifies lightning energy, stating its peak is in the dozens or hundreds of kilohertz, with damaging energy extending to hundreds of megahertz, and currents reaching thousands of amperes. It recommends solid, wide, smooth copper surfaces for ground leads to achieve low impedance across a wide frequency range. The author, W8JI, shares practical insights from his station, which includes two 300-ft towers and four 130-ft wire verticals, detailing his use of common point grounds and _DX Engineering RR-8 HD_ antenna switches for lightning protection without coaxial surge protectors. Specific examples of antenna systems prone to common mode current problems are listed, such as random wire antennas without proper feedline lengths and off-center fed dipoles. The text also explains how a ground screen or radial system can reduce local noise sensitivity for vertically polarized antennas by covering the lossy earth.

Demonstrates the principles of effective HF multi-band antenna systems, emphasizing the use of non-resonant antennas, understanding line attenuation, and the proper application of transmatches and baluns. The resource challenges prevalent amateur radio myths, such as the necessity of a 1:1 SWR at the antenna feedpoint and the misconception that reflected power is lost or damages equipment. It cites authorities like Jim Fisk (Ham Radio Magazine) and M. Walter Maxwell (W2U, QST's "Another Look At Reflections" series) to support its arguments, providing historical context and technical explanations for these long-held beliefs. The article details how to combine non-resonant antennas with appropriate feedlines and matching devices to achieve broad-band operation. It compares coaxial cable losses with those of balanced open-wire lines, illustrating how ladder line can significantly reduce attenuation and handle higher impedances, enabling an 80-meter dipole to operate effectively across multiple HF bands. Practical guidance is offered on transmatch operation, explaining impedance matching principles and debunking the idea that tuners merely "fool" the transmitter. It also clarifies the function and potential misapplication of baluns, particularly transformer-type baluns, in the presence of high SWR.

The resource, "Conventional Use of Transmission Line," meticulously details the operational principles of transmission lines, emphasizing the Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) mode of energy transfer. It clarifies that for a line to function purely as a transmission line, all currents must be confined internally, with external fields ideally zero. The discussion differentiates between balanced and unbalanced lines, asserting that while both require equal and opposite currents within the conductors, the key distinction lies in the voltage relationship of each conductor to the surrounding environment. It highlights that a good antenna pattern does not inherently confirm proper feeder balance, and that common-mode currents can lead to RF in the shack and increased noise levels, even without pattern distortion. The article further explains that a transmission line can become a radiating conductor if energy is applied in a non-TEM mode, leading to common-mode issues. It cites classic texts like Jordan and Balmain's "_Electromagnetic Waves and Radiating Systems_" and Kraus's "_Antennas_" to support its definitions of TEM mode operation. The content also explores non-transmission line applications of parallel or concentric conductors, such as _coaxial dipoles_ and _folded dipoles_, which intentionally operate in non-TEM modes for antenna functionality. The author, _W8JI_, stresses that simply measuring equal currents is insufficient to confirm a balanced feeder; phase and voltage balance to ground are equally critical.

The "Beginner’s Guide to Small-station EME" by Paul Bock, K4MSG, offers an insightful look into Earth-Moon-Earth communication, a fascinating aspect of VHF and above amateur radio. This presentation demystifies moonbounce, explaining how two-way radio contacts are made by reflecting signals off the Moon. K4MSG highlights the historical context of EME, noting the substantial investment and technical challenges that once characterized these operations, often requiring setups like the W5UN "Mighty Big Array" (MBA). Historically, path loss exceeding 250 dB, spatial polarization offset, Faraday rotation, and galactic noise made EME a formidable pursuit, with CW being the mode of choice for signals that had to be audibly detectable. Equipment limitations in noise figure and coax performance further compounded the difficulty for early moonbouncers. However, the landscape of amateur EME dramatically shifted around 2003 with the introduction of the JT65 software. This innovation, specifically designed for EME, allowed for signal decoding well below the noise floor, making small-station EME a practical reality for more hams using common transceivers and less complex antenna systems.
