A 102-inch vertical whip, commonly a CB antenna, forms the core of this low-profile 10-meter antenna design, optimized for the 28 MHz band. The construction details specify three 8-foot radials made from scrap wire, connected to a common point. This simple yet effective setup is designed for ease of construction and deployment, making it accessible for operators with limited space or materials. The design emphasizes using readily available components, including PVC pipe for the mast and a SO-239 connector for the feedline, ensuring a straightforward build process for a resonant quarter-wave vertical. Field results indicate that this antenna provides good performance for local and DX contacts on 10 meters, despite its compact footprint. The author, N8WRL, shares practical insights into its construction and tuning, highlighting its suitability for temporary or permanent installations where a full-sized antenna might be impractical. Comparisons to more complex designs suggest that this low-profile vertical offers a respectable signal-to-noise ratio and effective radiated power for its size, proving that simple designs can yield satisfying on-air results.

The OZ1CX center-loaded mobile antenna project details the construction of a compact **80-meter** antenna, specifically designed for mobile, portable, and stationary operations. It features a loading coil wound on a 50 mm PVC pipe with 1.5 mm copper wire, comprising 100 turns over 150 mm length, resulting in an inductance of 150 µH. The design incorporates a 1.5-meter whip and a 1.5-meter base section, with the coil positioned at the center for optimal performance on the 3.5 MHz band. Performance measurements indicate a **VSWR** of 1:1.2 at 3.7 MHz when mounted on a vehicle, achieving a bandwidth of 30 kHz for VSWR below 1:2. The antenna's efficiency is compared to a full-size dipole, showing a signal strength reduction of 3-4 S-units, which is typical for compact mobile HF antennas. Practical application notes cover tuning adjustments by varying the whip length and coil tap points, emphasizing the importance of a good ground plane for effective operation.

When operating Parks on the Air (POTA) in public spaces, maintaining a low profile can be advantageous, as VA3KOT discovered. This antenna design draws inspiration from several established concepts: Peter Waters G3OJV's _Invisible HF Vertical_, which uses a 13ft vertical wire and ground radials; Greg KJ6ER's _POTA PERformer_ antenna, known for its raised vertical and reduced radial count; and ideas from Jim Heath W6LG and Frank K4FMH regarding telescoping whips on photographer's tripods. The resulting antenna combines a shortened portable design with a raised feedpoint and two raised radial wires, making it suitable for multiple bands. The construction incorporates a 4:1 impedance transformer, similar to a _Rybakov_ antenna, and necessitates an external tuner for optimal performance across the bands. This approach aims to minimize visual impact while still providing effective HF communication capabilities. VA3KOT built and field-tested this antenna, reporting positive results during POTA activations. The article provides practical insights into its design and operational considerations for fellow activators seeking discreet yet efficient portable setups.

There are quite a few variants of the design accompanied with many opinions on the effectiveness of the antenna. This page features links to some similar projects and a homebrewed personalized version of this portable antenna tuner

When experimenting with the WellGood Loop antenna, I came across the PA0RDT MiniWhip design referenced in several places. The PAC-12 Antenna, a multi-band portable vertical, is meticulously detailed in this construction article by James Bennett, _KA5DVS_. The design emphasizes ease of homebrewing using readily available components from local hardware stores, including replaceable loading coils. It outlines the preparation of the 72-inch telescoping whip (originally from Radio Shack, with an alternate source now provided by _Pacific Antenna_), the construction of the loading coils from PVC risers, and the fabrication of the aluminum rod base sections. Specific instructions cover threading aluminum rod with a _1/4-20 threading die_ and assembling the feedpoint insulator with a BNC connector, along with recommendations for radial deployment. KA5DVS, an avid traveler and QRP enthusiast, developed the PAC-12 to address the bulkiness of random wire setups and the limitations of commercial portable antennas like the Outbacker or SuperAntennas MP1. His goal was a lightweight, packable antenna that disassembles into 12-inch sections, achieving an assembled length of approximately 8 feet. The design strategically places the loading coil away from the base for improved efficiency. The PAC-12 notably placed first in efficiency compared to a quarter-wavelength wire vertical at the HFPack antenna shootout during the Pacificon conference in October 2001, demonstrating its practical performance for field operations. Appendix C showcases various _NJQRP Club_ members' PAC-12 constructions, including a 20m beam made with multiple PAC-12 elements.

The _G3TSO_ Mobile Antenna Page details construction and tuning methods for mobile antennas operating across **10 to 160 metres**. The content describes a Hustler-based design, optimized for RF performance and vehicle speeds, featuring centre loading. For optimal operation on various bands, the loading coil placement requires clearance from the vehicle body. Antenna resonance is critical for efficient mobile operation. A mobile antenna's base impedance may be as low as 27 ohms, requiring specific matching to achieve maximum radiation, as a minimum SWR at the transmitter does not always indicate resonance or maximum output. Tuning involves physical adjustment of antenna length to achieve resonance at the operating frequency. The _G3TSO_ page outlines a tuning procedure utilizing a low-power signal source and a field strength meter to identify maximum radiation before impedance matching. Loading coil placement, either at the base, center, or top of the antenna, influences radiation efficiency and mechanical stability for mobile installations. Centre-loaded whips, such as the Hustler design, offer a compromise between efficiency and stability, often for single-band operation. Helically wound antennas, including those for **28 MHz**, may present base impedances around 17 ohms, resulting in a 3:1 SWR at resonance. Low resistance grounding at the antenna base is also specified for optimizing performance and minimizing RFI during mobile operation. DXZone Focus: Mobile | Any | Antenna Tuning | HF
