A 5/8-wavelength vertical antenna offers a lower angle of radiation compared to a 1/4-wavelength vertical, which is crucial for maximizing DX contacts. This design achieves its optimal radiation pattern by effectively compressing the main lobe closer to the horizon, resulting in a more efficient signal path for long-distance communication. The article details how the current distribution along the antenna element influences the radiation pattern, illustrating why a 5/8-wave radiator typically exhibits a gain of approximately **3 dB** over a 1/4-wave vertical when both are operating over a perfect ground plane. Understanding the _radiation pattern_ and current distribution is key to selecting the appropriate vertical antenna for specific operating goals. While a 1/4-wave vertical is simpler to implement and often used for local contacts, the 5/8-wave design is preferred by DXers seeking to exploit its lower take-off angle. The article also touches upon the practical considerations of feeding a 5/8-wave vertical, which typically requires a matching network to transform its inherent reactive impedance to a standard 50-ohm feedline impedance. This technical explanation clarifies the performance differences.

The platform aims to simplify the process of confirming QSOs by providing direct links to the respective logging services, allowing users to quickly ascertain if their contact has been uploaded and confirmed. Users can input a callsign and band to retrieve immediate results, indicating whether a QSO is present in the linked logs. The service also supports DXpedition teams by offering tools for managing their own logs and QSL routes, without requiring an account for general log searching. This functionality proves particularly useful for DXers seeking rapid confirmation of rare contacts or for those managing their QSLing efforts across multiple platforms after a significant operating event.

Optimizing directional gain on the 40-meter band often involves complex antenna designs; this resource details the construction and performance of a reversible _Moxon_ array. The design provides directional coverage from southeast to west, with a switching mechanism to reverse the pattern towards east to northwest. Key design considerations include precise element spacing, the critical role of coil inductance for proper resonance, and the use of _NEC5_ for accurate electromagnetic modeling, ensuring the antenna performs as predicted across the desired frequency range. The antenna's performance is evaluated through on-air contacts, demonstrating effective signal propagation to regions like the Caribbean, South/Central America, the US, and Europe. The article presents measured SWR plots and gain patterns, comparing them against the _NEC_ model predictions to validate the design's efficacy. Practical application notes cover mounting considerations and the benefits of its reversible pattern for targeted DXing on 40 meters, offering a robust solution for operators seeking enhanced directional capabilities without a full-sized rotating Yagi.

A C-Pole Antenna for QRPxpeditions describes a DIY C-Pole antenna designed for QRP (low-power) expeditions, inspired by KF2YN’s ground-independent vertical model. After adjustments, it achieved a 1:1 SWR at 14.060 MHz, rising to 2.5:1 at 14.35 MHz. A choke balun, comprising 15 turns of RG8X around a 4” can, was essential for optimal performance. Compact and self-supporting, the antenna enables reliable communication with minimal setup. Contacts included stations across the U.S., and even a 4,600-mile connection to Spain using only 5 watts.

Wavelog, a web-based amateur radio logbook application, launched in February 2024, represents a significant fork from the established Cloudlog platform, developed by a core team including DF2ET and DJ7NT. This open-source project focuses on delivering advancements in both stability and functionality, specifically tailored for the amateur radio community. The application allows users to manage their radio logs from diverse environments, including professional servers, standard web hosting, or even compact _Raspberry Pi_ setups. The platform distinguishes itself through its emphasis on simplicity, robust features, and versatile accessibility, enabling operators to log contacts from virtually any location. It supports various operating modes and data formats, providing a flexible solution for tracking QSOs and managing station activities. The project's development is driven by the collaborative spirit of the amateur radio community, prioritizing utility and user experience over commercial objectives. Key features include comprehensive logging capabilities, support for multiple bands and modes, and integration with common amateur radio data standards, ensuring broad utility for DXers and contesters.

The XX9D Log Online provides a direct log search function for the DXpedition to Macao, specifically detailing operations conducted in 2017 and 2019. This service allows amateur radio operators to verify their contacts (QSOs) with XX9D, a critical step for QSL card management and award applications. Users are explicitly advised to consult the online log to prevent duplicate contacts on the same band and mode, optimizing efficiency during active DXpedition periods. This online tool supports the "DX Code Of Conduct," promoting ethical operating practices within the amateur radio community. The platform facilitates the Online QSL Request System (OQRS), streamlining the process for requesting QSL cards without the need for traditional bureau or direct mail methods. Operators are instructed to defer OQRS submissions until the conclusion of the DXpedition, ensuring all logs are finalized. The log search interface is powered by CMSimple, a content management system, indicating a straightforward, database-free web application. The resource is designed for ease of access, providing a clear method for DXers to confirm their contacts and manage QSL requests efficiently.

Operating amateur radio repeaters involves understanding frequency offsets, CTCSS tones, and the basic signal flow through a repeater system. This resource details the fundamental concepts of repeater operation, including the distinction between input and output frequencies, the role of **CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System)** for access, and the typical frequency bands utilized for local communication. It clarifies terms such as "simplex" versus "duplex" operation and provides a diagram illustrating the signal path from a handheld transceiver to a repeater and back to another station, emphasizing the range extension repeaters offer. The article further explains practical aspects like identifying a repeater's offset (e.g., +600 kHz for 2-meter band) and the necessity of programming the correct tone. It compares the operational benefits of using repeaters for local communication over direct simplex contacts, highlighting how repeaters overcome line-of-sight limitations. The content is structured to assist new licensees in confidently making their first repeater contacts, providing a foundational understanding of how these critical infrastructure components facilitate wider area coverage for VHF/UHF amateur radio.

"The QRP Adventures of VE3FI" is a captivating blog that chronicles the amateur radio experiences of Bill, VE3FI, over two decades. Holding Canadian Basic, 5-word CW, and Advanced licenses, Bill's main interests include DXing and QRP operations. The blog offers detailed accounts of his portable activations, such as a recent outing in March 2025, where he achieved impressive DX contacts on the 10-meter band using just 8 watts and a Hamstick antenna. Bill's engaging storytelling and practical insights make this blog a valuable resource for both seasoned and aspiring amateur radio enthusiasts.
