Constructing a Lindenblad antenna for 137MHz NOAA satellite reception involves specific design considerations for optimal performance. The resource details the use of 4mm galvanised steel fencing wire, 300-ohm television ribbon cable, and wood/plastic components for the antenna structure. Key dimensions for a 137.58MHz-resonant antenna are provided, derived from the ARRL Satellite Handbook, specifying s, l, w, and d as 42, 926, 893, and 654mm respectively. The antenna is designed for Right Hand Circularly Polarised (RHCP) signals, requiring the four folded dipole elements to be tilted clockwise by 30 degrees. A significant aspect covered is impedance matching between the antenna's 75-ohm impedance and a typical 50-ohm receiver input. A twelfth-wave matching transformer, constructed from 117mm sections of 50-ohm RG-58 and 75-ohm RG-59 coax with a 0.66 velocity factor, is described. The article also addresses coaxial cable and connector selection, recommending 75-ohm Type-N connectors for RG-6 cable in professional setups and F56/F59 connectors for general use, while strongly advising against PL-259/SO-259 connectors for VHF. Strategies for mitigating Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) are discussed, including antenna placement to shield from local TV transmitters and the use of commercial or DIY band-pass filters, such as cavity resonators or helical notch filters, along with ferrite chokes on coaxial cables. Antenna orientation is explored, noting the Lindenblad's 'cone of silence' directly overhead and its maximized sensitivity towards the horizon. An experimental vertical tilt of 90 degrees is presented as a method to improve overhead reception and reduce interference from strong horizontal signals, particularly relevant in high RFI environments like the Siding Spring Observatory site.

A 5/8 wavelength mobile whip antenna for 2 meters can be constructed from a 5-foot CB helical whip, requiring the removal of original wire and installation of a new radiating element made from coax braid. The design incorporates an 8-turn loading coil with 5mm spacing, fabricated from the original whip wire, and utilizes approximately 1400mm of RG-58 coax braid for the radiating element to enhance flexibility and bandwidth. Final whip length is approximately **1350mm** from base to braid end, with tuning adjustments made by trimming the braid. Dual-wall 12mm heat shrink, such as _Jaycar WH5643_, is recommended for weatherproofing and stabilization, costing around $4.50 per 1200mm length. Achieving a 1.1:1 VSWR may not be feasible; a 1.5:1 VSWR is considered acceptable. Optimal mobile mounting is centered on the vehicle roof to minimize radiation pattern variations.

Helical antennas have long been popular in applications from VHF to microwaves requiring circular polarization, since they have the unique property of naturally providing circularly polarized radiation. Paul Wade W1GHZ

Investigates the gain characteristics of the **axial-mode helix antenna**, a widely used circularly-polarized antenna, by addressing conflicting claims in amateur literature regarding its performance. This article summarizes an extensive numerical modeling study using **NEC-2** to simulate approximately 10,000 different helical antenna configurations, systematically varying physical parameters like length and turn radius. The study consumed around 3,000 hours of compute cycles, with each antenna model utilizing between 600 and 1,400 segments for accuracy. The modeling data were rigorously compared against professional antenna literature, including experimental and theoretical work, revealing that the original Kraus formula for gain is often overly optimistic, predicting gains up to 4 or 5 dB higher than observed. Empirical expressions are provided for the maximum possible gain, Gmax(dB) = 10.25 + 1.22 L - 0.0726 L^2, and the optimum turn radius, Rmax = 0.2025 - 0.0079 L + 0.000515 L^2, both valid for antenna lengths (L) between 2 and 7 wavelengths. The research also notes that a half-lambda square groundplane performs nearly as well as an infinite groundplane, while radials incur a gain penalty of about 3.5 dB.

This web article by VK3BLG details the construction of an experimental 70cm (432 MHz) circularly polarized patch antenna, intended for satellite communication. The resource provides dimensions, feed point specifications, and impedance matching considerations for a single patch element, with discussion extending to array configurations for circular polarization. Construction involves a copper patch element on a dielectric substrate, fed via a coaxial cable. The design is based on information derived from AO-40 satellite antenna specifications, focusing on achieving circular polarization for satellite reception. The article includes specific dimensions for the patch and feed points, along with impedance values. Validation is implied through on-air satellite reception reports, with initial signal reports of **1 S-point above noise** for AO-40 beacons using a grid reflector, improving to **3-4 S-points above noise** with a 2-turn helical feed. The author references a _NanoVNA_ for impedance measurements and discusses the relationship between slot and dipole antennas in the context of patch design. VE3NEA presents a detailed account of designing and constructing a **helical filter** specifically for 144 MHz satellite reception, addressing severe SDR receiver overloading from nearby Land Mobile Radio Network signals between 141 MHz and 143 MHz. The author's experience with RTL-SDR, RSP1a, and Airspy Mini receivers demonstrated the necessity of a narrowband solution to enable reception in the 145.8-146 MHz range with only 3 MHz separation from strong interference. The resource delves into the theoretical underpinnings of helical resonators, drawing upon Anatol I. Zverev's "Handbook of filter synthesis." It explains the equivalent circuit of a two-resonator passband filter, highlighting the critical role of stray capacitance (C3) in determining the coupling coefficient (K) and emphasizing the importance of **critical coupling** (K=1) for optimal filter performance. Misconceptions regarding tap positions and impedance transformation are clarified, with tap placement shown to control resonator loading and the trade-off between bandwidth and losses. Construction details include sourcing materials like 1/4" copper tubing and PCB, precise assembly techniques, and the use of tuning screws for frequency and coupling adjustments. Measurements performed with a NanoVNA revealed discrepancies from initial Coil64 calculations, necessitating adjustments to helix turns and tap positions to achieve the desired 3.5 dB passband loss and 40-50 dB suppression of interference.

The _G3TSO_ Mobile Antenna Page details construction and tuning methods for mobile antennas operating across **10 to 160 metres**. The content describes a Hustler-based design, optimized for RF performance and vehicle speeds, featuring centre loading. For optimal operation on various bands, the loading coil placement requires clearance from the vehicle body. Antenna resonance is critical for efficient mobile operation. A mobile antenna's base impedance may be as low as 27 ohms, requiring specific matching to achieve maximum radiation, as a minimum SWR at the transmitter does not always indicate resonance or maximum output. Tuning involves physical adjustment of antenna length to achieve resonance at the operating frequency. The _G3TSO_ page outlines a tuning procedure utilizing a low-power signal source and a field strength meter to identify maximum radiation before impedance matching. Loading coil placement, either at the base, center, or top of the antenna, influences radiation efficiency and mechanical stability for mobile installations. Centre-loaded whips, such as the Hustler design, offer a compromise between efficiency and stability, often for single-band operation. Helically wound antennas, including those for **28 MHz**, may present base impedances around 17 ohms, resulting in a 3:1 SWR at resonance. Low resistance grounding at the antenna base is also specified for optimizing performance and minimizing RFI during mobile operation. DXZone Focus: Mobile | Any | Antenna Tuning | HF
