Modifying the _ICOM IC-706MKII_ transceiver for out-of-band transmit capability involves specific surface-mount device (SMD) removal on the main circuit board. This procedure enables transmit functionality from 0.5 MHz to 200 MHz, excluding the commercial FM-Wide broadcast band, significantly expanding the radio's operational frequency range. The modification requires careful handling of small components and a fine-tipped, low-wattage soldering iron. Prior to beginning, all programmed memories and initial setup configurations must be noted, as the modification process will erase them. The instructions detail the necessary tools, preparation steps, and the precise location of the two SMD diodes to be removed. These diodes are situated near an oblong crystal can and a test point labeled _CP3_ on the main board. Successful completion returns the unit to its default configuration, necessitating manual reprogramming of memory channels and initial settings. This project is suitable for operators with experience in SMD work and fine soldering.

Controlling amateur radio transceivers remotely often requires dedicated software to interface with the radio's CAT (Computer Aided Transceiver) system. CATSPAW is a software utility specifically developed by N2OHZ for the Yaesu FT-100, facilitating computer-based control over various radio functions. The software provides an interface for adjusting parameters such as frequency, mode, and other operational settings, which can be particularly useful for remote station operation or automated tasks. While the specific features and user interface details are not extensively documented on the download page, the primary function centers on providing a digital control layer for the _FT-100_. This allows operators to integrate the transceiver into a larger station setup that might include logging programs or digital mode applications, enhancing the overall operational flexibility. The utility's design focuses on direct control, leveraging the radio's internal command set. As a downloadable executable, _CATSPAW_ represents a common approach to radio control software from its era, offering a direct link between a personal computer and a specific transceiver model.

Hidden transmitter hunting, often called fox hunting or Amateur Radio Direction Finding (_ARDF_), presents a unique challenge for radio amateurs. This resource details the _PicCon_ controller, a specialized device designed to automate the transmission of signals for such events. It integrates with a standard radio transceiver, functioning similarly to a packet radio TNC, by controlling the Push-To-Talk (PTT) line and injecting audio tones or modulated CW Morse code into the microphone input. The _PicCon_ unit is field-programmable using DTMF tones received via the radio, storing all settings in EEPROM for power-off retention. Its compact design and low power consumption (a few milliamps from a 7-35VDC source) make it suitable for remote deployment. An onboard LED indicates operational status, and a push-button allows manual start/stop of transmissions without DTMF. Typically supplied as a kit, _PicCon_ includes a PCB, components, and a comprehensive manual (available in HTML, RTF, and PDF formats). The kit provides a six-conductor interface cable, but users must supply radio and power plugs due to varied configurations. Byon, _N6BG_, developed this controller, which is available from the Byonics website.

The online Morse code translator and decoder provides functionality for converting plain text into Morse code and decoding Morse code back into text. Users can input text directly into a designated box for translation to Morse, with the tool ignoring characters that lack a Morse equivalent. Conversely, Morse code can be entered using periods for dots and minus signs for dashes, requiring a single space to separate letters and a forward slash to delineate words. The interface also supports direct Morse input via a button, where a half-second pause separates letters and a 1.5-second pause separates words. The resource details the historical context of Morse code, noting its invention by _Samuel F.B. Morse_ in the 1830s for telegraphy, and its continued use by amateur radio operators for recreational purposes and emergency signaling, such as the **SOS distress signal**. Guidance on learning Morse code suggests using online translators for practice and listening to amateur radio transmissions. The tool offers an audio playback feature for translated Morse, allowing users to hear the code at various words per minute (WPM) settings. It also includes a visual chart to aid in memorizing the dot and dash sequences for the alphabet.

The Olivia digital mode, a **Multi-Frequency Shift Keying (MFSK)** radioteletype protocol, is specifically engineered for robust communication under difficult propagation conditions on shortwave radio bands from 3 MHz to 30 MHz. Developed by Pawel Jalocha in 2003, Olivia signals can be decoded even when the noise amplitude exceeds the digital signal by over ten times, making it highly effective for transmitting ASCII characters across noisy channels with significant fading and propagation phasing. Early on-the-air tests by Fred OH/DK4ZC and Les VK2DSG on the Europe-Australia 20-meter path demonstrated intercontinental contacts with as little as one-watt RF power under favorable conditions. Common Olivia modes are designated as X/Y, where X represents the number of tones and Y is the bandwidth in Hertz, with examples including 8/250, 16/500, and 32/1000. The resource clarifies that Olivia, unlike some other digital modes, produces a constant envelope, allowing RF power amplifiers to achieve greater conversion efficiencies and making it less prone to non-linearity. Operators are advised that **Automatic Level Control (ALC)** can be set higher than no meter movement for MFSK modulation, as long as it's not driven past its high limit, contrary to common misinformation about other digital modes. The Olivia community encourages voluntary channelization on suggested calling frequencies, such as 14.0725 MHz for 8/250, to facilitate initial contacts, especially for signals below the noise floor. The Olivia Digital DXers Club provides links to Groups.io, Facebook, and Discord for community engagement and offers details on QSO parties.

When installing a mobile antenna, optimal placement significantly impacts performance. Factors such as gain, antenna type, ground plane availability, mounting style, and environment must be considered. Antenna designs, such as 1/4 wave and 5/8 wave, have distinct radiation patterns ideal for specific settings—urban areas or flat terrains, respectively. Ground plane size requirements differ by frequency, impacting effectiveness. Among vehicle mounting options, the car roof center provides the best ground plane and minimal obstruction, ensuring peak performance, especially at higher frequencies like 800 MHz.

The ZL1WTT resource details an experimental software-based Digital Amateur Television (DATV) system, demonstrating the multiplexing of up to six standard-definition (SD) and one high-definition (HD) channel utilizing _h264 compression_. The author encountered peak data rates reaching 32 Mbit/s, necessitating a shift to Freeview and Sky settings (22.5M Sym/s 3/4FEC) to manage bandwidth. The setup employs four networked computers, with a laptop functioning as the multiplexer to re-code PIDs for various inputs, including looped MPEG2 playlists, MPEG2 encoder card input from a VCR, satellite feeds, and an off-air UHF receiver. The system highlights the inherent flexibility of the DVB transport stream, supporting diverse formats such as MPG2, h264, AC3, and AAC. A significant advantage of this software-defined approach is the absence of video quality degradation from stored MPEG2 files to the displayed output, coupled with the ease of reconfiguring settings for MPEG2 encoder cards (e.g., size, bit-rate, frame rate, video input, coding format) and satellite receiver cards (e.g., frequency, LNB volts, symbol rate, FEC). The author also discusses the development of a new graphical user interface (GUI) using _Gambas_ for Linux, aiming to simplify configuration for this DATV project. Specific hardware components mentioned include Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150 and Nova-S plus cards, with a focus on optimizing analog video input via Y/C (S-video) to minimize frequency roll-off. The resource also provides insights into data rates for HD (1080i) content, recommending 8 to 12 Mb/s for optimal performance. Software utilized includes _Ubuntu Studio 10.04_, WinFF, VLC, and TMPGEnc Editor, underscoring the project's reliance on open-source tools and a foundational understanding of LAN networks and DVB transport streams.
