Tuning non-resonant antennas and usage of such technique during contests.

It is possible to detune the tower so that, at least on one band, the tower can be made to effectively disappear. That is, become non-resonant on the band of interest. This allows the vertically-polarized low-bands antenna to meet its potential.

This antenna is an omnidirectional and multiband and it is well suited for DX enthusiasts with limited space. Each of the parallel circuits (trap) behaves like an isolator on its resonant frequency.

The Terminated End Fed Vee Antenna (TEFV) is a travelling wave antenna with constant current distribution. Unlike traditional resonant antennas, TEFV operates without standing waves, using a terminating resistor for broadband efficiency. With a combination of vertical and horizontal polarization, it offers wide bandwidth from 1.8 MHz to 30 MHz, eliminating the need for a tuner. Key components include a 9:1 unun transformer and a 500-ohm terminating resistor. Grounding and counterpoise enhance performance, and it can handle power losses of up to 30%. TEFV provides an effective, versatile antenna solution for amateur radio and broadcast applications.

A simple superheterodyne receiver (3.5–30 MHz) for amateur radio achieves stable SSB-CW reception using modern BJTs, an AD831 mixer, a 6-pole quartz filter, and Seiler oscillators. Designed with high IF (4.5 MHz), compact AM-FM variable capacitors, and modular resonant circuits, it ensures selectivity, image rejection, and stable tuning. Built in a copper-lined wooden case, it features practical assembly techniques but lacks advanced features like AGC or S-meter. Effective on basic antennas, it achieves global reception.

Essentially, a J-pole is a 1/2 wave resonant antenna connected to a quarter wave matching stub. The feedline is connected at a point on the matching stub that is at the feedline's characteristic impedance. The result is 3/4 of a wavelength on one side and 1/4 wavelength on the other side.

This page presents an online calculator tool for determining the dimensions of various HF wire antennas operating between 1.8-30 MHz. Users input their desired resonant frequency to obtain precise measurements for four popular antenna types: standard flat-top dipole, inverted Vee, quad loop, and equilateral delta loop. The calculator provides comprehensive measurements including leg lengths, minimum heights, horizontal spreads, and feedpoint distances. Accompanying the calculator are detailed technical explanations, construction notes, and installation guidelines for each antenna type, making it a practical resource for amateur radio operators building their own antennas.

In the quest for an ideal field portable antenna, the author recounts experiments involving various wire configurations. While a previous candidate, a 41ft random wire, proved effective but lacked stealth, the search led to a surprising rediscovery of a design previously rejected—the Rybakov Antenna. With a focus on simplicity, rapid deployment, and multiband capability, the author explores the versatility of a 26ft Rybakov, avoiding the halfwave trap. The article delves into the antenna's performance and its potential as a discreet, resonant solution for field operations, addressing the challenges encountered during a POTA activation. Additionally, the Unun/Balun design used in conjunction with the Rybakov Antenna is discussed, providing insights into achieving a balanced system.

A Magnetic Loop Controller project details the construction and operation of an automatic tuning system for magnetic loop antennas, which are resonant circuits using an oversized inductor and an adjustable capacitor. The system employs a stepper motor to precisely adjust the variable capacitor, maintaining optimal resonance across the HF bands. It integrates with various transceivers, including _Icom_, _Kenwood_, and _Yaesu_ models, by monitoring the VFO frequency and adjusting the loop's tuning accordingly. The project provides comprehensive building instructions, a PowerPoint-style presentation, and the full source code for the controller's firmware, enabling hams to replicate and customize the design. The controller's firmware offers diverse functionality, including automatic frequency tracking, manual tuning, and SWR monitoring, significantly enhancing the operational efficiency of magnetic loop antennas, particularly for QRP and portable operations. The design emphasizes accurate capacitor positioning, crucial for achieving low SWR and maximum radiated power. Comparisons with manual tuning methods highlight the benefits of real-time adjustment, especially when operating across different bands or making frequent QSYs. The project's detailed documentation and available source code facilitate experimentation and modification by advanced builders, allowing for tailored performance characteristics.

Originally developed by Japanese 6-meter operators, the 'Hentenna' offers a unique design that allows for horizontal polarization when vertically oriented. Explore radiation patterns, VSWR charts, and antenna currents diagrams to optimize your antenna's performance for long-distance contacts.

A half wave wire that is tuned for resonance on 80m will NOT be resonant on 40m despite a precise harmonic relationship between the two bands. The End Effect is caused by a capacitive coupling between an unterminated wire end and the ground.

The author explores enhancing the performance of a 7-meter fiberglass squid pole wire antenna for amateur radio. The wire, resonant at 10MHz, poses impedance challenges on various bands. Experimenting with direct coax feed and UN-UN transformers, the LDG Z11-Pro2 auto-tuner is found effective but may show deceptive SWR readings. Designing a collapsible 6-meter beam antenna involves careful consideration of element geometry and feedline matching, as demonstrated by VE3SMA's project. The construction draws inspiration from foldable dipole concepts and established wire beam designs like the Penn. State 40m beam and the DJ4SA Spiderbeam. Utilizing **4NEC2 modeling**, the author optimized element lengths for gain and bandwidth, observing the impact of end loops on resonant frequency and the need for compensation. On-the-air results validate the design, including a successful 1st double hop Es QSO with 10 Watts and satisfactory performance in the CW WW VHF Contest from FN05, where 41 grids were worked with 100 Watts, showing improved performance over a simple dipole.
