Designing and constructing portable wire antennas for HF operations, this resource explores several configurations including the _foldback dipole_ for space-constrained setups and an inductively shortened dual-band dipole for 20m and 40m. It details the calculation of inductance for shortened elements, providing a Visual Basic 6.0 program screenshot that illustrates determining coil parameters like turns and length for a **25.5 uH** inductor. The document emphasizes practical considerations such as adjusting wire lengths for optimal SWR, noting that a dual-band dipole achieved SWR below 2:1 on both 20m and 40m, with careful adjustment bringing it under 1.5:1. Further, the resource describes a half-wave antenna matched with a coaxial stub, a method often referred to as the _Fuchskreis_ in German amateur radio circles, to transform the high feedpoint impedance to 50 Ohms. This monoband solution, for a 20m application, uses a stub length of **2.98m** (0.216 lambda multiplied by coax velocity factor) and a shorted stub of approximately 48cm. The coaxial stub design is highlighted for its resilience to ground proximity, allowing it to be rolled up or laid on the ground with minimal SWR impact, making it highly suitable for portable QRP operations.

Ten essential tips and truisms for understanding HF antenna: Non-resonant wire dipole antennas fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function effectively as multiband antennas, as detailed in "The Classic Multiband Dipole Antenna" by WB8IMY in March 2004 QST. Coaxial cable, unlike balanced parallel-wire feed lines, can cause RF to travel on the outer shield braid, leading to RF feedback to the station; a 1:1 balun at the dipole center can mitigate this by isolating the unbalanced coaxial feed line. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and directing RF energy, with beam antennas concentrating power in a specific direction, and wire antennas also exhibiting shaped radiation patterns. An antenna tuner's primary role is to match the transceiver's 50-ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, allowing modern transceivers to deliver full power. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (like the Windom) can be used, though they often necessitate an antenna tuner and a counterpoise or radial network. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent or inclined, which affects feed point impedance and may require SWR experimentation with coaxial feed. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength require an efficient ground system, typically comprising elevated or buried radial wires, with more radials generally leading to better efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee antenna efficiency; an inefficient vertical antenna with a poor ground system can show a low SWR while wasting most RF as heat. Investing in high-quality, low-loss feed line, especially coaxial cable, is crucial for maximizing RF signal transfer and overall antenna system performance.

A 17 3/4-inch radiating element and 18 3/4-inch ground plane radials form the basis of this quarter-wave ground plane antenna for 2 meters FM. The design, attributed to AA1PG, utilizes a panel-mount SO-239 UHF connector and three lengths of #12 copper wire, with a total material cost estimated at $3.00. Construction involves soldering the elements directly to the SO-239, emphasizing thorough solder flow for robust connections. Recommended feedline includes _RG-8X_ for longer runs, with _RG-58_ acceptable for shorter lengths, cautioning against _RG-174_ for VHF applications due to high loss. The antenna is designed for elevated deployment, such as in trees or on roof gables, to maximize line-of-sight propagation. It aims to improve repeater access compared to typical rubber duck antennas, even with low power output.

The NB6Zep Antenna, an electrically shortened 80-meter end-fed wire, addresses space constraints for low-band operation by integrating two loading coils into a 37-foot wire. This design, modeled with _EZNEC_, explores configurations like the quarter-wave sloper and inverted-L, with the latter providing a more vertical radiation pattern and practical backyard deployment. The resource details specific coil construction, recommending 21 uH coils made from _BW coil stock #3026_ or similar, and outlines wire segment lengths for optimal tuning. Performance analysis indicates a radiating efficiency of approximately 27% with good ground conductivity, resulting in a signal typically 3-4 dB down compared to a full-size quarter-wave vertical. The antenna exhibits a narrow bandwidth, around 50 kHz, due to its high Q, necessitating a tuner for broader band operation. Feedpoint impedance is low, with ground resistance playing a critical role in achieving a usable SWR. The article emphasizes the importance of an effective ground rod at the feedpoint for proper operation and tuning, suggesting an antenna analyzer for precise adjustments. It confirms the antenna's suitability for DX, citing successful contacts from Oregon to the East Coast and Hawaii on a 160-meter variant, making it a viable option for urban operators seeking low-angle radiation on 80 meters.

The resource, "Conventional Use of Transmission Line," meticulously details the operational principles of transmission lines, emphasizing the Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) mode of energy transfer. It clarifies that for a line to function purely as a transmission line, all currents must be confined internally, with external fields ideally zero. The discussion differentiates between balanced and unbalanced lines, asserting that while both require equal and opposite currents within the conductors, the key distinction lies in the voltage relationship of each conductor to the surrounding environment. It highlights that a good antenna pattern does not inherently confirm proper feeder balance, and that common-mode currents can lead to RF in the shack and increased noise levels, even without pattern distortion. The article further explains that a transmission line can become a radiating conductor if energy is applied in a non-TEM mode, leading to common-mode issues. It cites classic texts like Jordan and Balmain's "_Electromagnetic Waves and Radiating Systems_" and Kraus's "_Antennas_" to support its definitions of TEM mode operation. The content also explores non-transmission line applications of parallel or concentric conductors, such as _coaxial dipoles_ and _folded dipoles_, which intentionally operate in non-TEM modes for antenna functionality. The author, _W8JI_, stresses that simply measuring equal currents is insufficient to confirm a balanced feeder; phase and voltage balance to ground are equally critical.

Low-frequency (LF) radio time signals, operating primarily in the 40–80 kHz range, are broadcast by national physics laboratories for precise clock synchronization. Transmitters like **JJY** (40 kHz, 50 kW; 60 kHz, 50 kW), RTZ (50 kHz, 10 kW ERP), MSF (60 kHz, 15 kW ERP), WWVB (60 kHz, 50 kW ERP), RBU (66.66 kHz, 10 kW), and DCF77 (77.5 kHz, 50 kW) cover vast geographic areas, often several hundred to thousands of kilometers. LF signals offer distinct propagation advantages over higher-band transmissions such as GPS. Their long wavelengths (3–6 km) enable effective diffraction around obstacles like mountains and buildings. The ionosphere and ground act as a waveguide, eliminating the need for line-of-sight and allowing a single powerful station to cover extensive regions. Ground wave propagation minimizes ionospheric variability effects on transmission delay, and signals penetrate most building walls effectively. Robust and low-cost receivers, often priced at 20–30 USD/EUR, are widely used in radio clocks. These receivers typically comprise a tuned ferrite core antenna, a receiver IC (e.g., Atmel T4227, U4223B, MAS1016) for amplification and AM detection, and a microcontroller for decoding the time signal and phase-locking a local clock. Specific components for DCF77, MSF, and WWVB are readily available from vendors like HKW Elektronik and Ultralink.

DF0WD/DL4YHF's Longwave Overview details amateur radio operations on the 135.7 to 137.8 kHz segment in Germany. The author outlines the "inofficial" European band plan, specifying segments for QRSS, TX tests, beacons, conventional CW, and data modes. Early LF activities at DF0WD began with a 20-watt CW transmitter, later upgraded to a homemade linear transverter capable of 100 watts, driven by an Icom IC706 on 10.137 MHz. The station's antenna system includes a 200-meter wire, approximately 10 meters above ground, supported by football field light-masts. Despite its length, the antenna's efficiency is noted as very low due to the immense wavelength of about 2.2 km. The author's experience highlights the significant challenge of achieving effective radiated power (EIRP) on LF, estimating DF0WD's EIRP at around 80 milliwatts based on field strength measurements from PA0SE. DF0WD/DL4YHF has successfully worked numerous countries on 136 kHz CW, including DL, F, G, GI, GM, GU, GW, HB9, HB0, LX, OE, OH, OK, OM, ON, OZ, PA, and SM. The author also mentions ongoing efforts to log contacts with CT, EI, LA/LG, and to complete a two-way QSO with Italy, demonstrating persistent activity on this challenging band.

Steve Nichols, G0KYA, presents a practical examination of ground systems for vertical antennas, drawing heavily on the empirical research of Rudy Severns, N6LF. He explains that a robust radial field is crucial for ground-dependent verticals, effectively replacing the antenna's "missing half" and mitigating severe RF absorption in lossy soil. Nichols clarifies that surface radials do not strictly require a quarter-wavelength; instead, deploying a minimum of 16 to 32 shorter wires often yields superior results compared to fewer, longer ones. The presentation also addresses the common SWR paradox: a poor ground might show a perfect 1:1 match, but adding radials, while potentially raising the SWR to around 1.4:1, significantly improves true radiation efficiency. Nichols defines counterpoises as elevated wire networks that substitute for earth connections, offering solutions for limited-space installations, such as the **Folded Counterpoise (FCP)** for 160 meters. This resource provides actionable engineering data for optimizing vertical antenna performance.

Operating from Banana Island, Sierra Leone (AF-037), the 9L2019 DXpedition by F6KOP and a ten-operator team used the callsign 9LY1JM from January 9-21, 2019. This detailed report covers the logistical challenges, including securing visas and licenses with local assistance from Mark 9L1YXJ and Gregory of Dalton’s Guest House. The team deployed monoband quarter-wave verticals on the beach and two Beverage on Ground (BOG) antennas for Europe/Asia and the USA, operating four stations simultaneously. Technical hurdles encountered included high tides submerging antennas, requiring repositioning, and persistent QRM between closely spaced stations, mitigated by doubling filters. CW signal irregularities at 30-32 WPM were resolved by PC and WINTEST restarts. A significant FT8 logging bug was identified and corrected with on-site software. Despite these issues, the team logged over 4,000 QSOs in the first 24 hours, averaging 5,000 QSOs daily, with a peak of over 6,000 in one day. Propagation varied, with excellent 160m conditions on January 12 yielding over 750 QSOs, and a later four-hour opening pushing the 160m total past 1,600. High bands were challenging due to low solar activity, but mid-bands provided intense pileups and rapid continent-wide contacts. The DXpedition concluded with nearly 50,000 QSOs, including a successful school QSO with Collège Doisneau de Sarralbe (57), managed by F1ULQ and F6KFT.

DIY calculators provide only rough estimates, useful as a starting point for simulations, not for precise builds.

7MHz to 30MHz operation is achieved with a magnetic-mounted HF antenna designed for car roof deployment, capable of handling 100 Watts without an external antenna tuner. The design incorporates a large base-loading coil with multiple taps, allowing for frequency selection across various HF bands. This coil effectively increases the electrical length of a short telescopic antenna element, compensating for its inherent capacitance. Construction involves 3D-printed components for the coil former and support structures, though conventional building methods using plastic drainpipes are also suggested. The car body serves as the ground plane, with the coil assembly mounted on a 500mm square metal plate secured by super neodymium magnets. Protection under the magnets is advised to prevent vehicle scratches. Detailed instructions cover winding the 30-turn coil with 2.5mm diameter household electrical cable, assembling the 3D-printed parts, and making soldered connections. Taps are staggered every five turns for precise frequency adjustment. Performance examples include a 7913km contact to Japan using a 1.5m element and 100 Watts, demonstrating low-angle radiation and omni-directional pattern with minimal S-point loss compared to a full quarter-wave.

Understanding radio wave propagation is fundamental for effective HF communication, and this guide from the Galway Radio Club elucidates the principles behind _Near Vertical Incidence Skywave_ (NVIS) operation. It begins by contrasting NVIS with line-of-sight and surface wave propagation, highlighting its utility for reliable regional coverage, particularly in challenging terrains or within the skip zone. The document explains how NVIS leverages high-angle radiation, refracting signals from the ionosphere to return to Earth within a circular region, typically up to **650 km** (400 miles) from the transmitter. The guide delves into critical factors influencing NVIS, such as the _critical frequency_ (Fo) and the Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF), emphasizing their dependence on solar activity, time of day, and season. It provides practical advice on frequency selection, noting that 40 meters is often the highest daytime NVIS band, with 60 meters and 80 meters favored as darkness falls. The author, EI5DD, suggests using an ionogram for real-time propagation data, considering it more reliable than generic ham-clocks. Antenna considerations are also covered, recommending dipoles, inverted vees, or phased dipoles positioned 0.1 to 0.25 wavelengths above ground for optimal high-angle radiation. The document mentions mobile NVIS setups, including military configurations and commercial options like the Barrett Communications roof-rack antenna, which can cost around **£2000.00**. It concludes by reinforcing NVIS as an essential technique for national emergency communications, with 5 MHz (60m) and 80 meters being primary bands for daytime and nighttime operations, respectively.

Radio wave propagation describes how radio waves travel from one point to another, classified as ground waves, skywaves, and free space propagation. Ground waves propagate over the earth's surface in low/medium frequencies, bending around obstacles but limited to short ranges. They enable AM/FM broadcasting and military submarine communication.

When installing a mobile antenna, optimal placement significantly impacts performance. Factors such as gain, antenna type, ground plane availability, mounting style, and environment must be considered. Antenna designs, such as 1/4 wave and 5/8 wave, have distinct radiation patterns ideal for specific settings—urban areas or flat terrains, respectively. Ground plane size requirements differ by frequency, impacting effectiveness. Among vehicle mounting options, the car roof center provides the best ground plane and minimal obstruction, ensuring peak performance, especially at higher frequencies like 800 MHz.

Detecting stray RF voltages on station grounds, chassis, and interconnecting cables is crucial for preventing program and hardware failures in the shack. This article details the construction and application of an LED RF V-probe, which offers significantly higher sensitivity compared to conventional neon lamp indicators. The probe leverages two specific properties of modern red LEDs: their ability to glow at microampere currents and their rectification capability at frequencies up to tens of megahertz. The design features a simple circuit with two LEDs, allowing for indication of both positive and negative RF voltage half-waves. The minimum detectable RF voltage is approximately 2 V, a substantial improvement over the 40-60 V threshold of neon bulbs. The resource illustrates the probe's physical construction on a PCB and provides a direct comparison demonstrating its superior sensitivity in detecting RF fields near a coil. Two operational modes are described: a non-contact mode for high RF voltages (above 15-20 V) and a direct-contact mode for measuring lower RF voltages, with a safety caution for the latter. Practical examples show the probe's use in analyzing RF voltage distribution across a radio station setup at 1.84 MHz and 24.9 MHz, revealing insights into common-mode current issues and the effectiveness of mitigation strategies like adding radials.

A guide to constructing a simple quarter-wave ground plane antenna, detailing design principles and providing dimensions for VHF/UHF bands

AM radio listening excels at night due to sky-wave propagation, where signals travel farther by reflecting off the ionosphere’s F1 and F2 regions. Daytime ground wave propagation falters as solar radiation ionizes the D region, absorbing signals. At night, reduced ionization allows recombination, letting waves reach hundreds of miles. This enables tuning into distant stations, like KGO in San Francisco from Northern California. Enhanced by tools like the CCRadio-2E, sky-wave propagation turns AM listening into an exciting nocturnal adventure.

Operating amateur radio satellites presents unique challenges, particularly concerning antenna design and signal propagation. Juan Antonio Fernández Montaña, EA4CYQ, recounts his three-year journey into satellite communication, starting with initial guidance from EB4DKA. His early experiments involved a portable 1/4 wave VHF antenna with four 1/4 wave ground planes, designed for hand-held use to adjust polarity. This setup, paired with an FT-3000M transceiver, allowed full-duplex operation on **VHF** transmit and **UHF** receive, proving effective for early contacts on satellites like AO27, UO14, and SO35. EA4CYQ's experience highlights the critical role of coaxial cable loss and antenna polarization. After encountering significant signal degradation with longer RG213 runs, he experimented with a 1/2 inch commercial cable, noting improved reception but persistent fading due to varying satellite polarities. This led to the construction of an **Eggbeater II** antenna, an omnidirectional UHF design offering horizontal polarization at the horizon and circular right polarization at higher elevation angles. Subsequent modifications resulted in the directional **TPM2** antenna, which provided sufficient gain for LEO satellites with a wide 30-degree lobe, enabling consistent contacts from his home station. The article concludes with practical insights on the performance of the Eggbeater II for both UHF and VHF, and the TPM2 for UHF, emphasizing their utility for portable and fixed operations. EA4CYQ's journey underscores the iterative process of antenna development and the importance of adapting designs to overcome real-world propagation challenges in satellite communications.
