A 9 dB gain 70cm collinear antenna construction is detailed, utilizing eight half-wavelength sections of _RG58/U_ coaxial cable. The design incorporates specific calculations for velocity factor (0.66 for RG58/U) to determine precise element lengths, such as 223mm for a half-wavelength at 444 MHz. A quarter-wave radiating element of #16 solid wire, 169mm long, is added to the top, and a 160mm aluminum tube acts as a quarter-wave counterpoise at the feed point. RF choke baluns, constructed from three _FT50-43_ toroids, are positioned a half-wavelength from the feed point to mitigate common mode current. Assembly involves soldering the coax sections in series, followed by SWR testing during construction and final mounting within a ¾-inch PVC pipe. The article suggests using four half-wave elements for a shorter antenna, noting a potential slight increase in SWR, which can be mitigated with quarter-wave ground radials. The design principles and formulas are scalable for other VHF/UHF bands like 6m, 2m, or 1¼m, providing a versatile homebrew solution for enhanced gain.

The RXO Unitenna, a vertical wideband antenna, offers operation across the 7-21 MHz spectrum, covering the 40, 30, 20, 17, and 15-meter amateur bands. This design focuses on achieving a low SWR across a broad frequency range, making it suitable for general HF operation without requiring an external antenna tuner for minor SWR variations. The antenna utilizes a unique loading coil and matching network to maintain efficient radiation characteristics across its operational bandwidth. Construction details within the PDF document include specific dimensions for the radiating element and the counterpoise system, which is critical for vertical antenna performance. The design incorporates readily available materials, simplifying the build process for radio amateurs. Performance graphs illustrate the SWR characteristics across the 7 MHz to 21 MHz range, demonstrating the antenna's wideband capabilities. The document also provides guidance on feedline connection and grounding considerations for optimal field deployment. This vertical antenna configuration is particularly useful for hams with limited space, offering a compact footprint compared to horizontal wire antennas.

Presents the KE4UYP linear-loaded vertical antenna design, which introduces very little loss on 80 or 160 meters, achieving an overall radiation efficiency of 80% to 85%. This design addresses common pitfalls of traditional base-fed verticals by placing the majority of the current at the top of the antenna, eliminating the heavy reliance on extensive ground radial systems. The author's initial 10-meter model, only three feet tall, yielded 5/9 signal reports to Anchorage, AK, and Europe, confirming its effectiveness. The antenna incorporates both vertically and horizontally polarized radiators, with a 1/4 wavelength horizontal counterpoise located at the feed-point, near the top, to create an almost totally omnidirectional pattern with high wave angle horizontally polarized radiation. This dual polarization ensures even illumination across all take-off angles, making it effective for both local contacts and **DXing**. The vertical element is linear loaded, adding capacitance reactance and making it longer than the horizontal element to achieve resonance and raise the feed-point impedance to 50 ohms. Fine-tuning the antenna requires careful adjustment, as tower reactance can vary. The article suggests starting with 80 feet for 80m and 170 feet for 160m for the vertical wire, then trimming for resonance. Bandwidth specifications include 300 kHz under 2:1 **SWR** on 80m and 100 kHz on 160m when suspended between trees, or 150 kHz on 80m when side-mounted on a tower.

A **mobile HF multiband antenna** project details the construction of a center and top-loaded design, optimized for 10 through 80 meters. This antenna incorporates a capacity hat positioned high on the whip for enhanced efficiency, differing from commercial bugcatcher designs. The coil construction prioritizes high Q and minimal loss through an air core, open spacing, and heavy gauge wire, contributing to its lightweight nature and suitability for portable operation with a proper counterpoise. Band switching is achieved by manually moving a jumper plug to various tap points on the coil, allowing for operation across multiple bands, with 17m being resonant when the coil is bypassed. The design, a result of nine months of experimentation by N1LO, includes detailed instructions for modifying a Hamstick antenna base, creating a jumper wire, and assembling the capacity hat using stainless steel wire and silver-bearing solder for robust connections. The loading coil utilizes nylon grommet strips around a PVC pipe for an air-core winding, ensuring high efficiency. Tap sockets are fashioned from silver-plated 5-way binding posts, providing low-resistance RF joints for band selection. Guidance on tap point determination emphasizes using an antenna analyzer like the MFJ 259B or 269 to achieve resonance, especially on 40m and 80m where feedpoint resistance can be low. The document also covers the installation of monofilament stays to maintain antenna uprightness at highway speeds, with specific attachment points for stability.

Presents a practical approach to constructing a portable, lightweight antenna support structure, ideal for field operations or temporary installations. The design utilizes readily available PVC pipe sections, allowing for a total height of **20 feet** and a transportable weight of **25 lbs**. Detailed material lists specify various PVC pipe diameters and lengths, along with couplers, tees, and elbows, facilitating a modular assembly that can be easily disassembled for transport. Accompanying the tower design, the resource also outlines the construction of a _MicroVert_ antenna, including formulas for radiator length, capacitance, and inductance. It provides guidance on creating a current balun using ferrite beads or a coax coil, and calculating counterpoise length for optimal performance. The antenna section includes a schematic diagram illustrating the connection of the SO-239 connector and counterpoise.

A vertical monoband that's small, light and portable, needs no counterpoise and performs as well as a home antenna

End-Fed Half-Wave Antennas (EFHWAs) are analyzed for their utility in portable QRP operations, emphasizing their simplicity, efficiency, and predictable radiation patterns compared to other portable antenna types. The discussion contrasts EFHWAs with vertical antennas, random length wires, and center-fed dipoles, highlighting the common pitfalls of each, such as ground system dependency for verticals and feedline issues for dipoles. The article details the electrical half-wavelength calculation using the formula L (Ft) = 468/F(MHz) and explains how EFHWAs can be resonant on harmonic frequencies, enabling multiband operation. Various deployment configurations are presented, including the inverted L, inverted Vee, sloping wire, and vertical setups, each with specific advantages for radiation angle and polarization. For instance, a vertical EFHWA offers a low angle of radiation suitable for DX contacts without requiring an extensive ground system. The resource also addresses the counterpoise requirements, suggesting a quarter-wavelength wire or connection to a metallic structure for decoupling. A schematic diagram for a simple parallel-tuned circuit tuner, based on the _Rainbow Bridge/Tuner_ design, is provided, detailing component values for 30 and 40 meters, including a 6 microhenry toroidal inductor and a 20-100 picofarad mica compression capacitor. The tuner's adjustment process for SWR matching is also outlined.

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

Demonstrates the construction of a base-loaded quarter-wave vertical whip antenna, suitable for both mobile and portable HF operations. This design utilizes a vehicle body as a ground plane for mobile use or a counterpoise for field deployment. The article details the selection of materials, such as a _glass fibre tubing_ former and 24 s.w.g enamelled copper wire for the loading coil, with specific turn counts suggested for 20m (around **30 turns**) and 40m (around **50-60 turns**). It outlines a practical tuning method using an SWR bridge and even an audible signal approach, emphasizing careful adjustment of coil turn spacing or whip length to achieve optimal SWR. The resource also mentions the use of an antenna analyzer for more precise tuning, contrasting it with the SWR method.

The no counterpoise antenna

An 85ft wire fed against a 17ft counterpoise that works well in 80 and 40 meters

Many antennas function because of common mode currents, rather than working in spite of them. Two popular examples are CFA and EH antennas. Another recent example, appearing in Antennex's compact antenna articles, is a thick stub "vertical" with no counterpoise.

All antennas that are situated close to the ground are affected by that ground to some extent. This article explain effects and benefits of counterpoise.

This resource details the construction of a portable antenna tripod designed for supporting small vertical antennas, utilizing readily available electrical metal tubing (EMT) or conduit. It outlines the necessary components, including a custom-fabricated _EARC tripod plate_, standard hardware, and a 10-foot section of 1/2-inch EMT cut into specific lengths for legs and a center support. The instructions cover assembly of the tripod plate, leg construction, and integration with a fiberglass fishing pole like the _Kwik Stix_ or _Shakespeare Wonderpole_ to support a vertical wire HF antenna. The project also describes an adaptation for using the tripod with 3/8x24 threaded mobile antennas such as _Hamsticks_ or _Buddisticks_, where the tripod structure itself contributes to the antenna's counterpoise system. A complete parts list is provided, along with ordering information for the specialized EARC tripod plate, which serves as a fundraiser for the Honolulu Emergency Amateur Radio Club. The document includes photos illustrating the assembled tripod and its use with a fiberglass pole.

With the view to establish a quick and easy multi-band antenna deployment for portable and camping operations a simple long wire antenna with an earth or earth plus counterpoise arrangement with a 9:1 voltage unun including a tuner or simply with a tuner is one possible solution. With the 9:1 voltage unun and wire lengths suggested in the below tables the antenna should present non extreme impedances for all HF amateur band frequencies. This page is far from complete and represents the ongoing investigation into this type of antenna. Experiments to date seem to have raised more questions than obvious answers.

Ten essential tips and truisms for understanding HF antenna: Non-resonant wire dipole antennas fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function effectively as multiband antennas, as detailed in "The Classic Multiband Dipole Antenna" by WB8IMY in March 2004 QST. Coaxial cable, unlike balanced parallel-wire feed lines, can cause RF to travel on the outer shield braid, leading to RF feedback to the station; a 1:1 balun at the dipole center can mitigate this by isolating the unbalanced coaxial feed line. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and directing RF energy, with beam antennas concentrating power in a specific direction, and wire antennas also exhibiting shaped radiation patterns. An antenna tuner's primary role is to match the transceiver's 50-ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, allowing modern transceivers to deliver full power. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (like the Windom) can be used, though they often necessitate an antenna tuner and a counterpoise or radial network. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent or inclined, which affects feed point impedance and may require SWR experimentation with coaxial feed. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength require an efficient ground system, typically comprising elevated or buried radial wires, with more radials generally leading to better efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee antenna efficiency; an inefficient vertical antenna with a poor ground system can show a low SWR while wasting most RF as heat. Investing in high-quality, low-loss feed line, especially coaxial cable, is crucial for maximizing RF signal transfer and overall antenna system performance.

Radials & Counterpoise

The Superantennas MP-1 portable HF antenna is analyzed for its design and field performance, particularly its high-Q loading coil and 3/8-inch mounting. The review details the antenna's construction, including an 8-inch vertical section, a large-diameter loading coil tuned by a sleeve, and a 4-foot whip that disassembles into six rods for transport. Initial testing with the supplied 10-foot ribbon cable "ground plane" yielded poor SWR and RF hot conditions, indicating an inadequate ground system. Further experimentation with longer radials and resonant counterpoises for each band improved matching and eliminated RF hot issues, but introduced significant operational complexity. The author notes the difficulty in optimizing both counterpoise length and coil setting without an antenna analyzer, and the sensitivity of the MP-1 to counterpoise deployment. The review also discusses the recommendation to tune for maximum received signals rather than minimum SWR, often necessitating an external ATU due to the antenna's typical low impedance. The **MP-1**'s critical dependence on resonant counterpoises for effective operation, especially when elevated, is highlighted as a major drawback for portable use. The author ultimately sold the antenna, concluding that despite its sound technical design, its fussy nature and the need for extensive counterpoise management or an ATU detract from its portability and convenience compared to simpler, less expensive dipole solutions. The **Superantennas MP-1** is deemed a flawed portable antenna, requiring considerable effort to achieve its claimed performance.

A home made portable vertical antenna, that with a single 1/4 wave counterpoise wire is possible to achieve less than 1.5:1 SWR on 40, 30, and 20 meter bands. It is basically a center load, shortened ground plain vertical antenna.

The Terminated End Fed Vee Antenna (TEFV) is a travelling wave antenna with constant current distribution. Unlike traditional resonant antennas, TEFV operates without standing waves, using a terminating resistor for broadband efficiency. With a combination of vertical and horizontal polarization, it offers wide bandwidth from 1.8 MHz to 30 MHz, eliminating the need for a tuner. Key components include a 9:1 unun transformer and a 500-ohm terminating resistor. Grounding and counterpoise enhance performance, and it can handle power losses of up to 30%. TEFV provides an effective, versatile antenna solution for amateur radio and broadcast applications.

An FCP is not magic. It has no gain. An FCP improves an antenna system by replacing more loss with less loss. Some have been able to erect better wires in the air because the small size of the FCP allowed better placement of the antenna.

Steve Nichols, G0KYA, presents a practical examination of ground systems for vertical antennas, drawing heavily on the empirical research of Rudy Severns, N6LF. He explains that a robust radial field is crucial for ground-dependent verticals, effectively replacing the antenna's "missing half" and mitigating severe RF absorption in lossy soil. Nichols clarifies that surface radials do not strictly require a quarter-wavelength; instead, deploying a minimum of 16 to 32 shorter wires often yields superior results compared to fewer, longer ones. The presentation also addresses the common SWR paradox: a poor ground might show a perfect 1:1 match, but adding radials, while potentially raising the SWR to around 1.4:1, significantly improves true radiation efficiency. Nichols defines counterpoises as elevated wire networks that substitute for earth connections, offering solutions for limited-space installations, such as the **Folded Counterpoise (FCP)** for 160 meters. This resource provides actionable engineering data for optimizing vertical antenna performance.

WB5NHL describes setting up a 160-meter antenna on a small suburban lot, where standard options like Beverage antennas and 1/4 wavelength verticals require extensive space and ground systems. Instead, Guy Olinger's Folded Counterpoise (FCP) provides a solution. The FCP minimizes ground losses by using a folded wire design, allowing effective antenna placement in limited space. The FCP, fed with an isolation transformer, enabled WB5NHL's first 160-meter antenna installation, offering improved performance despite space constraints.

The article by Guy Olinger, K2AV, published in the May/June 2012 National Contest Journal, introduces the Folded Counterpoise (FCP), a compact 516-foot single-wire counterpoise elevated at 8 feet, designed for 160-meter operations on small lots like 100x150-foot backyards. Originating from efforts to revive Top Band for W0UCE on a postage-stamp property, the FCP uses strategic folds to cancel ground fields within 33 feet of center, minimizing losses to 0.13-0.53 dB—outperforming sparse or on-ground radials by up to 15 dB in poor soil—while mimicking opposed radials for efficient feedpoint impedance. Paired with a critical 1:1 or 4:1 isolation transformer (e.g., trifilar on T300-2 toroid) to block common-mode currents on coax feeds, it delivers proven results: K2AV's #8 North America low-power contest score, 7+ dB gains at W4KAZ and K5AF, and over 10,000 global web hits for DIY instructions using bare 12 AWG wire and weatherproof enclosures. Ideal for acreage-challenged hams, the FCP also excels on 80 meters with scaled dimensions, offering a low-loss alternative where full radials are impractical

In his POTA activation, WK4DS experimented with radials for hamstick antennas. Despite sun and RF noise challenges, successful connections were made. Surprisingly, tuned radials proved unnecessary, simplifying setup. Hamsticks demonstrated versatility across frequencies. Increased power improved signal quality, sparking his curiosity for further exploration in radio technology.

This report details a modification of a Diamond V2000 antenna, replacing its original two 0.50 m radials with two 1.55 m radials. Initial M5-threaded rods failed to fit; the housing required M6 threads. Custom radials were made using 8 mm OD aluminium tubing and M6-threaded stainless steel ends, secured with nuts machined to 9 mm. SWR issues on 6 m (>2:1) were largely due to a poor counterpoise connection, resolved during reassembly. NanoVNA measurements showed no adverse effects on 2 m or 70 cm. The final setup retains the two 1.55 m radials and original counterpoise. Other operators reported SWR degradation with similar mods—sometimes fixed by adding capacitance—but this was not observed here.
