Optimizing the impedance transformation and common-mode current suppression in antenna systems often involves selecting an appropriate balun. This project presents a **hybrid balun** design, combining characteristics of both voltage and current baluns to achieve superior performance, particularly when used with an antenna tuner. The design addresses issues like **common-mode current** on the feedline, which can distort the antenna's radiation pattern and introduce RFI in the shack. The construction details include winding techniques for the toroid core, component selection, and practical considerations for integration into an existing antenna system. Performance comparisons are drawn against conventional balun types, highlighting the hybrid balun's effectiveness across the HF bands. The resource provides insights into the current distribution and impedance matching properties, crucial for efficient power transfer and reduced SWR.

Determining the actual need for an antenna tuner often hinges on the specific antenna and feed line configuration in use. While many hams believe a tuner is always essential, its primary role is to present a 50-ohm impedance to the transceiver, not to "tune" the antenna itself. For instance, a resonant dipole fed with _coaxial cable_ at its design frequency typically requires no tuner, as the feed line impedance closely matches the radio's output. However, operating a non-resonant antenna, or using a resonant antenna on multiple bands, frequently necessitates a tuner to manage high Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) on the feed line. The article clarifies that a tuner placed at the transceiver only matches the radio to the feed line, not the antenna to the feed line. For maximum efficiency with a non-resonant antenna, an _automatic antenna tuner_ (ATU) or a remote tuner placed at the antenna feed point is often more effective, minimizing losses in the feed line. The discussion also touches on the practical implications of SWR, noting that modern transceivers often fold back power at high SWR, making a tuner a practical necessity to achieve full output power, even if the antenna itself is not perfectly matched.

A 10-meter J-Pole antenna, detailed in QST February 1950, offers a straightforward solution for hams operating with restricted space. This design, originally presented by W1BLR, is a **half-wave radiator** fed by a quarter-wave matching stub, providing a low-angle radiation pattern beneficial for DX. The article describes building the antenna from readily available materials like copper pipe, emphasizing its simplicity and effectiveness for **single-band operation**. The J-Pole's inherent design provides a good impedance match to 50-ohm coaxial cable without the need for an external tuner, a significant advantage for portable or minimalist stations. Its nondirectional pattern ensures coverage in all directions, making it a versatile choice for general operating on the 28 MHz band. The construction plans are clear, allowing even those with basic workshop skills to assemble a functional antenna.

F6EZX presents a detailed account of constructing a compact, multi-band _Levy antenna_ for portable holiday operations, specifically addressing issues with local QRM from a previous _Deltaloop_ setup. The article outlines the design criteria, including multi-band operation on 40m, 30m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m, a symmetrical configuration to reduce interference, and a low take-off angle for DX. Construction involves 2x 10.3m radiating elements and a 15.3m open-wire feeder (ladder line) with 7cm spacing, made from 1.5mm2 copper wire and foam pipe insulation spacers. Theoretical calculations, referencing F9HJ's "_Les antennes Levy_" book, guide the determination of element lengths and feeder impedance characteristics, aiming for a good match across bands with a commercial antenna tuner. Initial field tests with the _VCI Vectronics VC300DLP_ tuner showed a 1:1 SWR from 80m to 10m, with some difficulty on 17m. The antenna, mounted as a 45-degree slopper with the high point at 12m, successfully facilitated DX contacts to South America, particularly Chile and Argentina, suggesting a lower take-off angle compared to the previous Deltaloop which favored Brazil. The Levy antenna significantly reduced TVI/RFI, attributed to its improved symmetry and greater distance from the QRA. While signal reports on 15m and 20m were 1-2 S-points lower than the Deltaloop, its performance on 40m and 30m was comparable, fulfilling the design goals for a portable, low-cost, multi-band solution.

Presents G0GSF Brian's ZS6BKW antenna, a refined iteration of the classic G5RV, offering improved performance across multiple HF bands. The design emphasizes specific radiator and ladder line lengths to achieve lower SWR on 40m, 20m, 17m, 12m, and 10m, making it a practical choice for operators seeking a single wire antenna solution. The document includes critical dimensions for the flat-top and the 450-ohm ladder line section, which are key to its multiband resonance characteristics. Unlike the original G5RV, the ZS6BKW aims for direct 50-ohm feedpoint impedance on several bands, reducing the need for an external antenna tuner. My field experience with similar optimized dipoles confirms that precise construction, particularly the ladder line length, is paramount for realizing the intended SWR benefits. This design offers a compelling alternative for hams with limited space or those preferring a less complex antenna system.

It highlights the antenna's low angle of radiation, beneficial for DX, and claims up to 2 S-points improvement over a _G5RV_ or similar doublet when used as an omnidirectional vertical. A comprehensive shopping list, including specific part numbers from _Rapid Electronics_, is provided, along with advice on selecting fiberglass fishing poles for support and suitable antenna wire.

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

The document details the optimization and construction of the _Maria Maluca_ antenna, a compact 6-band (20m-6m) directional beam. The resource specifically revisits an older South American 2-element design for 10, 15, and 20 meters, applying modern NEC-based software to develop a six-band version. Performance data is meticulously tabulated, showing impedance, free space gain, gain at 12m height, elevation angle, and front-to-back (F/B) ratio for each band from 20m through 6m. For instance, on 15m, the antenna achieves 5.1 dBd free space gain and 13.72 dB F/B ratio. The construction section provides practical guidance on element assembly using aluminum pipes and hose clamps, detailing the use of a heavy-duty glass fiber reinforced polyamide rod for electrical separation and bending strength. It also specifies the use of 450-ohm _Wireman_ line CQ 552 for the transmission line. The document includes diagrams for rod fixing, an air-wound balun, and a vertical elevation diagram for the 15m band, illustrating its DX qualification. It also discusses the antenna's suitability for portable and expedition operations, noting its compact transport dimensions (max 1.50m length, 12 lb weight) and quick assembly time (under 15 minutes). The author, Dipl.Ing. Helmut Oeller, DC6NY, is identified as a source for material kits.

This ensures the transceiver correctly communicates with the SGC-230 for efficient antenna tuning across various amateur bands.

The ZS6BKW wire antenna, a variant of the G5RV, utilizes a specific 13m (42.6 ft) length of 450-ohm window line as its matching section, feeding a 28.5m (93.5 ft) flat-top element. This design aims for lower SWR on 40m, 20m, 17m, 12m, and 10m compared to a standard G5RV, often achieving SWR values below 1.5:1 on these bands without an antenna tuner. The feedpoint impedance transformation provided by the window line allows for direct connection to 50-ohm coax on multiple bands. F4FHH's experience involved constructing the ZS6BKW and evaluating its performance against an _OCF dipole_ (Off-Center Fed) on various HF frequencies. The article includes observations on SWR readings and operational effectiveness, highlighting the ZS6BKW's suitability for multi-band operation. The antenna's overall length, including the flat-top and window line, is approximately **41.5 meters** (136 feet), making it a significant wire antenna for fixed station use. Comparative analysis with the OCF dipole provided practical insights into the ZS6BKW's advantages and limitations, particularly concerning bandwidth and tuner requirements.

Operating a ZS6BKW antenna often involves understanding its lineage from the _G5RV_ design, with specific modifications by ZS6BKW to optimize performance on several bands. Through computational analysis and field measurements, the antenna's dimensions were refined to allow operation on 10, 12, 17, 20, and 40 meters without an antenna tuner. For 80, 30, and 15 meters, a tuner is necessary, though efficiency on 30 and 15 meters is noted as not particularly high. The physical configuration consists of two 13.755-meter radiating elements fed by a 12.20-meter section of 450-ohm ladder line. Tuning the antenna on the 20-meter band is critical, and any deviation in the ladder line's characteristic impedance necessitates recalculating the element lengths. The design is also referenced in the 12th edition of _Rothammel's Antennenbuch_, page 219. Proper common mode current suppression is crucial at the transition from ladder line to coaxial cable. This can be achieved with a common mode choke, such as several turns of coax wound into a coil or over a ferrite toroid like an Amidon T130. While a 1:1 balun is an option, it may introduce issues.

The **70cm Moxon Beam** project outlines the construction and testing of a compact, directional antenna for the 432 MHz band. G3XBM recounts his early 1980s experience with a 4W FM321 transceiver and a Jaybeam 48-element TV antenna, which provided a baseline for his later UHF antenna experiments. This project focuses on a simpler, yet effective, design for local and regional contacts, emphasizing ease of construction and practical field results over complex theory. The article details the specific dimensions and materials used for the Moxon rectangle, including 6mm diameter aluminum tubing for the elements and a PVC boom. G3XBM notes that the antenna was built for portable use, making it lightweight and easily deployable for field operations. The feedpoint impedance was measured at 50 ohms, ensuring a direct match without the need for an external tuner, which simplifies setup. Performance tests included comparisons against a commercial 5-element Yagi, revealing that the Moxon provided comparable forward gain and an excellent front-to-back ratio, crucial for reducing local QRM. The author's observations confirm the Moxon's reputation as a robust performer for its size, suitable for both fixed and portable 70cm operations.

One point eight MHz to 30 MHz is the operational bandwidth for this 4:1 Ruthroff voltage balun, designed to interface an unbalanced T-Match network with a balanced antenna system. The project details the construction using a _T200-2_ powdered iron toroid core, tightly wrapped in PVC electrical tape for insulation, and wound with 17 double bifilar turns of 1.25mm enamelled copper wire. This outboard balun offers flexibility, allowing hams to trial various baluns based on antenna system and impedance characteristics, rather than integrating it directly into the tuner. The resource includes a schematic of the balun, a wiring diagram showing winding connections, and a table suggesting alternative toroid cores like the T80-2 or T400-2 with corresponding winding counts. Component sourcing is straightforward, listing items such as the _Amidon_ T-200-2 core, SO-239 connector, and a sealed polycarbonate enclosure from Jaycar. Performance evaluation was conducted using an _AIM 4170C_ antenna analyser, demonstrating efficient 1:4 voltage transformation across the specified HF spectrum. Further efficiency tests involved measuring RF power loss at various frequencies, revealing minimal loss—less than 0.7 dB from 3.6 MHz to 30 MHz, and only 2.0 dB at 1.8 MHz. These measurements, performed under ideal 50-ohm conditions, confirm the balun's effectiveness as a low-loss interface for multi-band antenna systems. The page also links to several other balun and unun projects, including 1:1 current and voltage baluns, and 9:1 voltage ununs, providing a broader context for impedance matching solutions.

The X80 multi-band HF vertical antenna, a commercial iteration of the Rybakov design, exhibits a physical length of 5.5 meters, or approximately 18 feet, and is constructed from aluminum tubing. It operates as a non-resonant vertical, requiring an external antenna tuner for impedance matching across its intended operating frequencies. The antenna's design incorporates a 1:4 UNUN at its base, facilitating a nominal 50-ohm feed point impedance for the coaxial cable. Performance observations indicate effective operation on 40 meters, 20 meters, 15 meters, and 10 meters, with reduced efficiency on 80 meters and 160 meters due to its relatively short electrical length for these lower bands. Comparative analysis with a G5RV dipole and a half-wave end-fed antenna reveals the X80 offers a lower take-off angle, beneficial for DX contacts, particularly on the higher HF bands. Field tests conducted with an Icom IC-706MKIIG transceiver and an LDG AT-100ProII autotuner demonstrate the X80's ability to achieve acceptable SWR across 80m through 10m. The antenna's compact footprint and ease of deployment make it suitable for restricted spaces or portable operations, though its performance on 80 meters is noted as a compromise compared to full-size resonant antennas.

One of the standout features of the _Z-11 Pro_ is its 8000 memory slots, which enable it to remember successful matches and quickly retune when revisiting frequencies. This memory function significantly reduces tuning time, often to less than half a second. The unit is well-constructed, with improved pushbuttons and a sturdy metal case that offers good shielding. However, users should be aware of potential RFI issues and the lack of a power switch, which requires disconnecting the power cord to turn off the unit completely. Overall, the _LDG Z-11 Pro_ is a user-friendly and cost-effective tuner, offering advanced features that enhance its utility in various amateur radio setups.

With the view to establish a quick and easy multi-band antenna deployment for portable and camping operations a simple long wire antenna with an earth or earth plus counterpoise arrangement with a 9:1 voltage unun including a tuner or simply with a tuner is one possible solution. With the 9:1 voltage unun and wire lengths suggested in the below tables the antenna should present non extreme impedances for all HF amateur band frequencies. This page is far from complete and represents the ongoing investigation into this type of antenna. Experiments to date seem to have raised more questions than obvious answers.

Ten essential tips and truisms for understanding HF antenna: Non-resonant wire dipole antennas fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function effectively as multiband antennas, as detailed in "The Classic Multiband Dipole Antenna" by WB8IMY in March 2004 QST. Coaxial cable, unlike balanced parallel-wire feed lines, can cause RF to travel on the outer shield braid, leading to RF feedback to the station; a 1:1 balun at the dipole center can mitigate this by isolating the unbalanced coaxial feed line. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and directing RF energy, with beam antennas concentrating power in a specific direction, and wire antennas also exhibiting shaped radiation patterns. An antenna tuner's primary role is to match the transceiver's 50-ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, allowing modern transceivers to deliver full power. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (like the Windom) can be used, though they often necessitate an antenna tuner and a counterpoise or radial network. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent or inclined, which affects feed point impedance and may require SWR experimentation with coaxial feed. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength require an efficient ground system, typically comprising elevated or buried radial wires, with more radials generally leading to better efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee antenna efficiency; an inefficient vertical antenna with a poor ground system can show a low SWR while wasting most RF as heat. Investing in high-quality, low-loss feed line, especially coaxial cable, is crucial for maximizing RF signal transfer and overall antenna system performance.

The NB6Zep Antenna, an electrically shortened 80-meter end-fed wire, addresses space constraints for low-band operation by integrating two loading coils into a 37-foot wire. This design, modeled with _EZNEC_, explores configurations like the quarter-wave sloper and inverted-L, with the latter providing a more vertical radiation pattern and practical backyard deployment. The resource details specific coil construction, recommending 21 uH coils made from _BW coil stock #3026_ or similar, and outlines wire segment lengths for optimal tuning. Performance analysis indicates a radiating efficiency of approximately 27% with good ground conductivity, resulting in a signal typically 3-4 dB down compared to a full-size quarter-wave vertical. The antenna exhibits a narrow bandwidth, around 50 kHz, due to its high Q, necessitating a tuner for broader band operation. Feedpoint impedance is low, with ground resistance playing a critical role in achieving a usable SWR. The article emphasizes the importance of an effective ground rod at the feedpoint for proper operation and tuning, suggesting an antenna analyzer for precise adjustments. It confirms the antenna's suitability for DX, citing successful contacts from Oregon to the East Coast and Hawaii on a 160-meter variant, making it a viable option for urban operators seeking low-angle radiation on 80 meters.

This graphics-intensive program reveals the load on the output of a matching-network, based on measurements of the components in that network. Adjust the network (tuner) for a flat input, measure or look up the network component values and you will immmediately see the R and jX values of the load on the network, presented as both a schematic with the component values and as a Smith Chart normalized to the specified system impedance.

T2FD is a 600-900 ohms folded dipole, terminated with resistor. Feed impedance is coupled with 50/600 ohms voltage balun. It is a wide band antenna with rather low SWR over the full designed frequency range: antenna tuner is seldom needed.

There is a common perception that placing a balun on the input of a tuner causes the balun to work better. The thought is the balun operates with a matched impedance and that reduces balun losses. It also is thought that moving the balun improves balance.

Evaluates the **LDG Z100 autotuner**, a device designed to automatically match antenna impedance for optimal transmission efficiency. The review discusses its performance in comparison to the MFJ-902, noting that while the Z100 is a reliable autotuner, it does not match the range of impedances that the MFJ-902 can handle. The Z100 is suitable for operators seeking a 100-watt autotuner that covers HF bands, providing a practical solution for those who require automatic tuning without manual adjustments. The review highlights the Z100's operational context, focusing on its use in HF bands and its practical application in amateur radio setups. While it offers a straightforward tuning process, the Z100's limitations in impedance matching are noted, making it less versatile than some competitors. This comparison provides valuable insights for operators considering an upgrade or replacement for their current autotuner. The Z100's performance is positioned within the broader market of autotuners, offering a clear perspective on its strengths and weaknesses in real-world amateur radio operations.

The MFJ-971 portable antenna tuner, as stock, lacks a bypass switch and sufficient inductance for efficient 1.8 MHz operation. This modification addresses these limitations by integrating a DPDT switch for direct signal bypass, enhancing operational flexibility. Furthermore, the guide details the addition of a T130-2 iron powder toroid, wound with **29 turns** of enamelled copper wire, to augment the tuner's internal inductance. This increases the maximum inductance from approximately 17µH to around **27µH**, enabling effective impedance matching on the _160-meter band_. The modification involves cutting the wire after the 'L' tap on the original inductor and inserting the additional toroid, ensuring the entire original coil plus the new inductance is engaged when 'L' is selected. This preserves the functionality of other inductance settings while extending low-band performance. The article also highlights a potential RF burn hazard from the variable capacitor nuts on the MFJ-971, even at QRP power levels.

The **LDG Z100 Autotuner** review by GW6ITJ details the unit's practical application and performance in a ham shack environment. Initially acquired to replace an MFJ-902, the Z100 is noted for its ease of use, though the author observes it doesn't quite match the impedance range of the older MFJ unit. This hands-on assessment provides a real-world perspective on its capabilities for 100-watt operation across the HF bands. GW6ITJ specifically mentions the Z100's suitability for 3.5 MHz and higher frequencies, indicating its utility for common HF operations. The review focuses on user experience rather than technical specifications, directing readers to the LDG website for detailed data and manuals. This approach highlights the tuner's operational characteristics from a user's perspective. The author's experience with the Z100 suggests it's a reliable choice for general amateur radio use, particularly for those seeking a straightforward autotuner. The comparison to the MFJ-902 offers a valuable benchmark for hams considering a similar upgrade or new acquisition, emphasizing practical differences in impedance matching.

What happens in impedance space when the various popular matching networks (antenna tuners) are adjusted

When operating Parks on the Air (POTA) in public spaces, maintaining a low profile can be advantageous, as VA3KOT discovered. This antenna design draws inspiration from several established concepts: Peter Waters G3OJV's _Invisible HF Vertical_, which uses a 13ft vertical wire and ground radials; Greg KJ6ER's _POTA PERformer_ antenna, known for its raised vertical and reduced radial count; and ideas from Jim Heath W6LG and Frank K4FMH regarding telescoping whips on photographer's tripods. The resulting antenna combines a shortened portable design with a raised feedpoint and two raised radial wires, making it suitable for multiple bands. The construction incorporates a 4:1 impedance transformer, similar to a _Rybakov_ antenna, and necessitates an external tuner for optimal performance across the bands. This approach aims to minimize visual impact while still providing effective HF communication capabilities. VA3KOT built and field-tested this antenna, reporting positive results during POTA activations. The article provides practical insights into its design and operational considerations for fellow activators seeking discreet yet efficient portable setups.

LZ1AQ describes a versatile QRP antenna tuner that switches between Pi and Tee configurations with a single toggle. Using two variable capacitors and a seven-switch stepped inductor providing 128 increments (0.16 to 18.7 uH), this compact design handles 3.5 to 28 MHz with excellent matching range. The Pi mode works best for certain impedances while Tee mode proves more universal, matching loads the Pi cannot. Built in a plastic enclosure using salvaged radio capacitors, the tuner operates reliably up to 100 watts with proper antennas, though it's optimized for QRP service with random wires.

Presents two distinct hardware modifications for the Icom IC-7300 transceiver, detailing the necessary steps for each. The first modification, a _MARS_ transmit expansion, involves the physical removal of specific surface-mount diodes (D422) from the main board, enabling transmit capabilities across a broader frequency range, including out-of-band frequencies. It specifies the diode location on US versions of the IC-7300 and suggests using small diagonal cutters if a soldering iron is not preferred or available. The second modification focuses on the internal antenna tuner, aiming to provide wider impedance matching capabilities. This involves adding a **100k ohm** resistor to a designated point within the tuner circuit. The resource also briefly mentions a microphone modification for the _HM219_ and a general power increase, though without specific instructions for the latter two. It emphasizes safety precautions, such as disconnecting power and inspecting the work area.

The Fuchs Antenna tuner with a resonant circuit as a coupler. The Fuch Antenna Tuner is providing a high-efficiency compare to a 49:1 transformer using ferrite . The Fuchs tuner is a resonating L/C circuit to step-up the impedance from 50 Ohm to the required 3k. The ATU is able to perform automatic tuning with the addition of a tiny Aduino Nano and a SWR bridge.

Demonstrates the ZS6BKW multiband HF antenna, a design by ZS6BKW (G0GSF) that improves upon the G5RV by offering direct resonance on multiple bands without an antenna tuner. The resource details the antenna's 90-foot length and 40-foot 450-ohm twin lead downlead, emphasizing its suitability for hams with limited space or budget. It covers both horizontal and inverted-V configurations, noting the inverted-V's single-support advantage and the importance of maintaining an apex angle of at least 90 degrees to prevent signal cancellation. The author, G3UKV, shares his preference for 450-ohm twin lead over 300-ohm due to its superior strength and lower losses, especially in wet conditions, drawing from his extensive field experience. The document presents recorded SWR and impedance (R) measurements taken with an MFJ Antenna Analyzer, confirming excellent performance on 40m, 20m, 17m, 12m, 10m, and 6m, often with SWRs below 1.3:1. It also discusses the antenna's tunability on 80m with an ATU and suggests a method for 160m operation. G3UKV recounts receiving "excellent reports" on 7 MHz and 14 MHz, validating the antenna's effectiveness. Practical advice includes keeping antenna ends clear of ground by at least a yard to avoid detuning and the recommendation of a 1:1 current balun where the 450-ohm feeder connects to 50-ohm coax.

The multiband tuned doublet, or center-fed Zepp, is a simple and efficient HF antenna that operates effectively across most amateur bands using a balanced parallel-wire feedline and antenna tuner. Unlike coax-fed dipoles, it tolerates impedance mismatches with minimal loss. By selecting suitable feedline and dipole lengths, one can achieve stable multi-band operation. While it doesn’t match monoband Yagis, it offers excellent performance, low cost, and broad coverage. Its radiation pattern and efficiency vary with frequency, but it remains a practical and versatile solution for HF operators.

The PA0FRI Unbalanced/Balanced ATU is a home-built antenna tuner designed to efficiently match a W8JK 2-element beam antenna fed with a 450-ohm twin lead. Based on PA0FRI’s S-Match design, it optimizes energy transfer while maintaining balance, reducing losses, and ensuring proper radiation. The tuner uses a roller inductor, air variable capacitors, and a T200 iron powder coil, allowing fine-tuning across 14-50 MHz. Extensive lab tests confirm minimal attenuation and precise impedance matching, making it a reliable and efficient ATU for balanced antennas.

In the pursuit of an affordable matching and SWR indication solution for the Pixie-based transceiver system this T-Tuner and SWR bridge unit, while not groundbreaking, proves to be a cost-effective performer. With real-world impedance testing yielding a worst-case loss below 0.9 dB, the unit efficiently matches all bands on 80 M to 10 M ham bands, making it a valuable addition to the QRP system.

The tri-band trapped delta loop antenna design operates on 80 meters (3.5–4 MHz), 40 meters (7–7.3 MHz), and 30 meters (10.1–10.15 MHz) using a single triangular wire loop. This configuration eliminates the need for an external antenna tuner or band-switching relays. The antenna's physical perimeter, approximately 270 feet, establishes 80M as the fundamental band, with specific trap placements enabling resonance on 40M and 30M. Trap design and placement are critical, with 30M traps positioned inboard of 40M traps within the horizontal element. Each slant leg measures approximately 80 feet. The resource references foundational information from the _ARRL Antenna Handbook_ and _ON4UN’s Low Band DXing_ regarding full-wave loop behavior and feedpoint impedances. The project aims to provide multi-band HF operation from a single, fixed antenna structure.

The author explores enhancing the performance of a 7-meter fiberglass squid pole wire antenna for amateur radio. The wire, resonant at 10MHz, poses impedance challenges on various bands. Experimenting with direct coax feed and UN-UN transformers, the LDG Z11-Pro2 auto-tuner is found effective but may show deceptive SWR readings. The author employs adjustable UN-UN ratios and introduces a custom "porcupine" coil to optimize the antenna's efficiency.

VE1ZAC's analysis details the performance of **MFJ927** and **SGC239** autotuners with portable HF vertical antennas, specifically comparing 31 ft and 43 ft configurations. The resource originated from challenges encountered during a Maritime QSO Party roving operation, necessitating a lightweight and easily deployable antenna system. Target bands for the contest included 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters, with a maximum power handling of 100 W CW. The author utilized a 30-foot carbon fiber push-up pole to support a vertical wire element, noting its 2 lb weight and reliability. EZNEC modeling was employed to predict performance, showing favorable results for a 30-foot vertical with elevated radials, particularly on 40 and 20 meters. Feedpoint impedance measurements, taken with an AIM4170C, are presented for various HF bands, both with and without a 41-foot RG6 stub designed to reduce reactance on 80 and 20 meters. The stub significantly improved matching on these bands, easing the tuner's workload. Operational tests revealed issues with the MFJ927's reliability during contest setup, leading to reliance on the K3's internal tuner. The SGC239, tested post-contest, performed flawlessly. A detailed side-by-side comparison covers mechanical aspects, connection options, power bias, impedance range, board quality, and documentation. Modifications to the MFJ927, including a new aluminum case, white paint for heat reduction, and upgraded impedance-measuring resistors, are also described.
