This article presents the C-Pole antenna project, a compact, ground-independent vertical antenna designed for amateur radio operators. It features a folded half-wave dipole configuration that eliminates the need for radials, making it suitable for various locations, especially in deed-restricted areas. The C-Pole offers efficient performance with a 2:1 SWR bandwidth of approximately 3%, and it can be easily constructed using common materials. This article clarifies the roles of baluns, ununs, common mode chokes, line isolators, and impedance transformers in amateur radio. A balun decouples balanced antennas from unbalanced feed lines, preventing interference. Ununs serve a similar purpose for asymmetrical antennas. Common mode chokes and line isolators suppress common mode currents, reducing noise. Impedance transformers adjust antenna impedance to match feed lines but do not decouple or suppress common mode currents. Understanding these components is crucial for optimizing antenna performance and minimizing interference.

This article describes the construction of a simple dual-band VHF/UHF end-fed vertical dipole antenna designed for local repeater access using an Icom IC-705 radio. Built from a single piece of RG58U coaxial cable, the antenna consists of a 460mm exposed inner conductor, 450mm of intact coax, and a 9-turn choke balun wound on a 27mm former. Mounted on a 10m Spiderpole, the antenna achieves excellent SWR readings (<1.2:1 on 2m, <1.5:1 on 70cm) and provides effective coverage of local repeaters with unexpected reach into distant locations.

The document presents recorded SWR and impedance (R) measurements taken with an MFJ Antenna Analyzer, confirming excellent performance on 40m, 20m, 17m, 12m, 10m, and 6m, often with SWRs below 1.3:1. It also discusses the antenna's tunability on 80m with an ATU and suggests a method for 160m operation. G3UKV recounts receiving "excellent reports" on 7 MHz and 14 MHz, validating the antenna's effectiveness. Practical advice includes keeping antenna ends clear of ground by at least a yard to avoid detuning and the recommendation of a 1:1 current balun where the 450-ohm feeder connects to 50-ohm coax.

Ferrite E-cores offer a practical solution for constructing baluns, especially when connectors are already mounted on cables. These cores, commonly used in mass-produced pulse transformers, allow for multiple turns without dismounting connectors, making them ideal for control and power supply cables. The material of E-cores is generally suitable for common mode baluns up to 15 MHz, providing a cost-effective option for amateur radio operators. E-cores can often be sourced from old switch-mode power supplies, adding to their appeal for those looking to utilize existing resources. Integrating a _Software Defined Radio_ (SDR) into an existing ham radio setup involves connecting it with a standard transceiver (TRX), power amplifier (PA), and antennas. The core component is a splitter box that facilitates the connection between the TRX and the SDR, allowing for simultaneous operation without modifying existing equipment. In receive mode, the splitter ties the antenna inputs of both the TRX and a direct conversion receiver (DC RX) together. During transmission, the DC RX input is grounded via a fast telecom relay controlled by the transceiver's -SEND signal, incorporating a 10ms delay for safety. The splitter box includes a 3.7 dB input attenuator for impedance matching and acts as a protective fuse for the DC RX input. Ground loops are mitigated using common mode balun transformers, while the DC RX input is insulated with a broadband transformer. An audio switch box complements the setup, enabling users to listen to either the main transceiver, the SDR output, or both simultaneously. This configuration ensures noise immunity and safety, with the splitter housed in a screened box made from PCB material. On-air tests, such as the CQ WW 160m CW DX Contest, demonstrate the system's effectiveness, showcasing the SDR's ability to handle crowded band conditions with superior selectivity and dynamic range. The SDR's narrow bandwidth filters and waterfall display provide significant advantages, allowing operators to detect weak signals amidst strong interference. The integration of SDR with conventional radios offers enhanced operational flexibility and performance in challenging environments.

This comprehensive three-part guide examines baluns (balanced-to-unbalanced devices) and their critical role in ham radio antenna systems. The author explains how baluns prevent common-mode currents on feedlines, which can distort radiation patterns and cause unwanted RF in the shack. To address this, a custom design was developed, offering similar performance at a fraction of the cost. Using accessible materials and a simple 1:1 current balun, the homemade version proved highly effective, making it a practical solution.

Understanding how radio frequency interference (RFI) is coupled into equipment and subsequently detected is crucial for amateur radio operators. This guide delves into the fundamental mechanisms of RFI, particularly focusing on detection at semiconductor junctions and the unintended antenna action of system wiring. It explains that most RFI detection follows a square law, meaning a 6 dB reduction in RF signal can result in a 12 dB drop in detected audio, offering a practical approach to mitigation. The resource also clarifies the concept of common mode versus differential mode signals, detailing how cable imperfections can convert common mode antenna current into differential signals. It addresses the critical "Pin 1 Problem" in audio interfacing, a common design flaw where cable shields connect to the circuit board instead of the shielding enclosure, leading to significant RFI issues. Practical solutions, such as proper shielding, using twisted-pair cables, and strategic bonding of equipment, are discussed to effectively reduce or eliminate RFI. The guide emphasizes the importance of proper filtering and the often-misunderstood concept of "ground" in electrical systems, distinguishing between earth ground, equipment ground, and circuit common. It provides insights into minimizing loop area in wiring to reduce inductively coupled noise and antenna action, drawing on the author's extensive engineering background and ham radio experience.

Constructing a 4:1 Guanella current balun involves cross-connecting two 1:1 current baluns. At the low-impedance end, transmission lines from each balun are connected in parallel, while at the high-impedance end, they are connected in series. This configuration allows the device to achieve a 1:4 impedance ratio, effectively transforming a 200-ohm load to 50 ohms. The balun described utilizes **FT240-43 toroids** wound with 2.5mm2 twisted pair cable for 8 turns, intended for use with a 20m **Deltaloop antenna**. The article compares the performance of 2.5mm2 cable versus 1mm enameled wire, recommending the former for superior efficiency. Emphasis is placed on maintaining short core-terminal connections to optimize performance. Additional considerations include the option of integrating a separate Common Mode Choke (CMC) for enhanced common mode current suppression, especially if the balun's inherent suppression is not prioritized.
