A 10-20 meters coverage delta loop antenna. After relocating, DL2HCB designed a multiband loop antenna to cover 10-20m with an open-wire feed for impedance matching and compact installation. Inspired by the mini-X-Q design, a modified 10m delta-loop was built, enhanced with a 1/4 wave shorted stub for 28 MHz using 450-ohm ladder line. The antenna delivers east-west broadside radiation and performs as a closed loop on other bands. Operational tests yielded strong European signals and successful DX contacts, including a 20m QRP QSO with FY/DJ0PJ.

The G5RV antenna, with an overall length of **31.10m (102ft)**, functions as a 3/2-wave on 20 meters when installed horizontally at 12m (39ft), exhibiting a resonant frequency of 14.150MHz and an approximate resistance of 80 ohms. Its 10.36m (34ft) stub line, designed as a 1/2-wave on 14.150MHz with a 0.97 velocity coefficient, acts as an impedance transformer across other bands, aiming for multiband operation without traps. On 20m and higher frequencies, the G5RV demonstrates improved gain compared to a standard dipole, attributed to the _collinear effect_ from multiple 1/2-waves along the wire. The original design sought a multiband solution for limited spaces, often requiring an Antenna Tuning Unit (ATU) for effective operation across bands like 80, 40, 30, and 20m, particularly with modern solid-state PAs. Variants, such as the F8CI modification, incorporate a 1/4 current balun at the stub line's base for symmetrical-to-asymmetrical transition, known as a _remote balun_. Proper flat-top or inverted-V installation is critical for maintaining symmetry and collinear gain, with inverted-V apex angles below 120° progressively diminishing higher-band performance.

The examination highlights the antenna's reliance on a series of coaxial stubs to achieve resonance on multiple HF bands without external tuning. This internal architecture provides insights into how the _Antron 99_ manages impedance matching and radiation patterns for effective DX operation. Further details cover the antenna's base mounting and overall physical dimensions.

Sixty-four years of operating experience inform Glynn E. "Buck" Rogers Sr., K4ABT's, insights into the J-Pole antenna, which he describes as a direct descendant of the _Windom_ or _ZEPP_. His first article on the J-Pole appeared in HRC magazine in 1958, and he has since published numerous pieces in publications like CQ Magazine, consistently referring to the J-Pole as a Windom with a folded-back short section forming the parasitic element. He emphasizes that both the Windom and J-Pole are powerful multi-band antennas, performing exceptionally well at harmonics of their fundamental design frequency, and advocates for 50-ohm coaxial cable with a _BALUN_ at the feed-point to avoid RF energy losses. K4ABT details the J-Pole's features, noting its ease of erection, lack of radials, low angle radiation, greater bandwidth, and immunity to terrestrial noise. He highlights its suitability for local nets and distant repeaters, claiming more gain and durability than most ground planes, and its ability to meet stealth antenna requirements. The guide provides specific dimensions for 2-meter (145.000 to 146.000 MHz) and 6-meter (50.500 to 51.500 MHz) J-Pole antennas, including measurements for the long driven element, short tuning stub, and spacing. The construction section illustrates a modified feed technique using an SO-239 chassis-mount coax connector soldered into a copper tee, deviating from the usual hose clamp method. The author also discusses the use of _EMT_ (electrical metallic thin-wall conduit) as an alternative to copper in earlier days. He cautions against building a 75-meter J-Pole due to its impractical length, reinforcing the antenna's optimal application for VHF and UHF bands.

The antenna is nothing more than a simple 2.4 metre square loop drawing pinned to the internal brick wall of the spare bedroom. Yep, thats right, the inside wall of the spare bedroom - ideal for flat dwellers, hotel rooms or whinging neighbours, The loop has a simple switched inductance at the top of the square loop and uses a simple coaxial stub to tune the antenna. Need a general purpose antenna on the magic band? The J-Pole is an easy-to-build and inexpensive device that provides an omni-directional vertically polarised antenna without the need for a ground plane. In technical terms, it is an end fed vertical 1/2 wave which is fed via a 1/4 wave matching stub.

The antenna was named for W4JRW who invented it and holds a patent on the basic principle and uses quarter wave stubs, 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands

This drawing shows a simple 10 meter wire J-pole antenna designed for 28.4 MHz. It is a vertical, end-fed Zepp-style antenna made from common materials and intended for easy home construction. The main radiating element is a straight length of stranded copper wire, either 14 or 18 gauge, cut to about 16.5 feet. At the top, the wire is supported by an insulator, allowing the antenna to be hoisted vertically. The matching section is made from 450-ohm ladder line, approximately 7 feet 9.5 inches long, and shorted at the bottom. This matching stub transforms the impedance so the antenna can be fed with coaxial cable. The feed point is tapped about 6 inches above the bottom of the stub, with the shield and center conductor connected at the proper points. A choke balun is formed with five turns of RG-58 coax in a 4-inch diameter loop to help reduce unwanted RF on the feed line. The drawing notes that this antenna has about 0 dBd gain, similar to a dipole, but offers an omnidirectional pattern and low-angle radiation when installed high. Its main advantage is practical performance, simple construction, and effective coverage for 10 meter operation.

A 10-meter J-Pole antenna, detailed in QST February 1950, offers a straightforward solution for hams operating with restricted space. This design, originally presented by W1BLR, is a **half-wave radiator** fed by a quarter-wave matching stub, providing a low-angle radiation pattern beneficial for DX. The article describes building the antenna from readily available materials like copper pipe, emphasizing its simplicity and effectiveness for **single-band operation**. The J-Pole's inherent design provides a good impedance match to 50-ohm coaxial cable without the need for an external tuner, a significant advantage for portable or minimalist stations. Its nondirectional pattern ensures coverage in all directions, making it a versatile choice for general operating on the 28 MHz band. The construction plans are clear, allowing even those with basic workshop skills to assemble a functional antenna.

A 40-meter reversible _Moxon rectangle_ antenna project details its construction and performance, featuring 51-foot long sides and 7.7-foot turned-in sections. The design incorporates a 16.5-foot boom, with elements spaced 1.1 feet apart, constructed from #14 covered wire. It utilizes two double-pole relays for switching between NE and SW directions, achieving F/B ratios up to 40 dB on CW and 30 dB on SSB, with distinct reflector stub settings for each mode. This antenna replaced a full-size 2-element Yagi, demonstrating comparable forward gain while offering superior F/B ratios and directional flexibility. _EZNEC_ modeling indicates only 0.2 dB less forward gain than the Yagi. The system uses no baluns, relying on half-wave feedlines and switched stubs for impedance matching. The antenna is tree-supported at 45 feet, with its effective radiation height modeled at 80 feet due to local terrain, enhancing its performance over a nearby lake.

The G5RV multiband HF antenna, designed by Louis Varney (G5RV) in 1946, is a popular compromise antenna offering good overall performance on most HF bands when paired with an external antenna tuner. The basic full-size G5RV measures 102 feet across the top for 80 through 10 meter operation and is fed at the center via a 34-foot low-loss feed-stub. This interaction between the radiating section and the feed-stub facilitates matching across 80-10 meters with a standard tuner, often eliminating the need for ladder line directly to the shack. The antenna's design center frequency is 14.150 MHz, configured as a 3/2-wave dipole on 20 meters, with its 102-foot length derived from long-wire antenna formulas. Construction details emphasize the matching section, which can be open wire, ladder line (window-type), or TV twin lead. Each type has a specific velocity factor (VF) affecting its physical length for an electrical half-wave on 14 MHz; for instance, open wire requires 33.7 feet (VF 0.97), ladder line 31.3 feet (VF 0.90), and TV twin lead 28.5 feet (VF 0.82). The article provides formulas for calculating these lengths and discusses the antenna's behavior on individual bands, from 3.5 MHz where it acts as a shortened dipole, to 28 MHz where it functions as two three-half-wave long-wire antennas fed in-phase. Practical construction notes include recommendations for vertical descent of the matching section, sealing the coax junction, providing strain relief, and winding a coaxial choke coil to mitigate common mode current. The resource also presents dimensions for double-size (204 ft) and half-size (51 ft) G5RV versions, along with their corresponding matching section lengths for various line types, making it a versatile reference for hams considering this classic wire antenna.

Optimizing the ZS6BKW antenna for full HF band coverage often requires specific modifications beyond its standard configuration. This resource details several enhancements, beginning with a simple series capacitor to improve 80m SWR, a technique W5DXP found effective for permanent installation due to its minimal impact on higher bands. Further improvements include a 10-inch parallel open stub for 10m resonance, shifting the frequency to 28.4 MHz with an SWR of approximately 1.8:1, a practical solution for Technician class operators. The document then explores a switchable matching section, adding or subtracting one foot of ladder line at the 1:1 choke-balun, which significantly impacts higher frequency bands and eliminates the need for a tuner on 17m. W5DXP's _AIM-4170D_ antenna analyzer measurements confirm these effects. More advanced modifications involve a parallel capacitor for further 80m SWR reduction, requiring remote switching for multi-band operation, and relay-switched parallel capacitors at specific points on the 450-ohm matching section to achieve low SWR on 60m, 30m, and 15m. These detailed steps, including _Smith chart_ analyses for the challenging bands, aim to transform the ZS6BKW into a truly all-HF-band antenna, reflecting W5DXP's practical experience in antenna tuning.

The collinear J-Pole, often known as the Super-J, does improve the behavior over a regular J-Pole. there is an advantage when vertically combining 1/2 radiating sections to have a bit of separation between the half-wave end points. Get 0.8 dB more gain out of the trusty Super-J by replacing the traditional phasing stub with a long coil.

Essentially, a J-pole is a 1/2 wave resonant antenna connected to a quarter wave matching stub. The feedline is connected at a point on the matching stub that is at the feedline's characteristic impedance. The result is 3/4 of a wavelength on one side and 1/4 wavelength on the other side.

Documents the design and construction of a **four-band Moxon beam** antenna, covering 20, 15, 10, and 6 meters. Author W7JMP shares his journey from initial research and computer modeling using 4NEC2 to the final on-air testing and optimization. The project aimed for gain over a dipole on 20 meters, with a budget under $500, including the antenna rotor. The design incorporates fiberglass spreaders and a single feedpoint, avoiding complex relay switching. The article details the selection of materials, assembly techniques, and the critical tuning process. W7JMP describes fabricating the hub, mounting spreaders, and attaching elements made from stripped THTN wire. A notable innovation is the use of a half-wave tuning stub with a loading coil for in-situ adjustment of the 20-meter reflector, optimized via remote S-meter readings using a webcam and smartphone. This method allowed for fine-tuning the **front-to-back ratio** without lowering the antenna. Initial testing revealed a dipole-like pattern, which was significantly improved after tuning, resulting in reported 2 to 4 S-unit front-to-back ratios and enhanced signal strength for DX contacts on multiple bands, including sporadic E on 10 and 6 meters.

The project emphasizes weather sealing with silicon or butyl rubber compound and clear lacquer for durability and appearance.

VE1ZAC's analysis details the performance of **MFJ927** and **SGC239** autotuners with portable HF vertical antennas, specifically comparing 31 ft and 43 ft configurations. The resource originated from challenges encountered during a Maritime QSO Party roving operation, necessitating a lightweight and easily deployable antenna system. Target bands for the contest included 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters, with a maximum power handling of 100 W CW. The author utilized a 30-foot carbon fiber push-up pole to support a vertical wire element, noting its 2 lb weight and reliability. EZNEC modeling was employed to predict performance, showing favorable results for a 30-foot vertical with elevated radials, particularly on 40 and 20 meters. Feedpoint impedance measurements, taken with an AIM4170C, are presented for various HF bands, both with and without a 41-foot RG6 stub designed to reduce reactance on 80 and 20 meters. The stub significantly improved matching on these bands, easing the tuner's workload. Operational tests revealed issues with the MFJ927's reliability during contest setup, leading to reliance on the K3's internal tuner. The SGC239, tested post-contest, performed flawlessly. A detailed side-by-side comparison covers mechanical aspects, connection options, power bias, impedance range, board quality, and documentation. Modifications to the MFJ927, including a new aluminum case, white paint for heat reduction, and upgraded impedance-measuring resistors, are also described.

The design illustrates three basic configurations, including a method employing a short-circuited coaxial stub for inductance, as implemented by K4LPQ. An alternative design is presented where the center conductor of the stub is extended one-quarter wavelength, creating a signal-frequency short and allowing for an insulated wire stub to develop the required series inductance. The article provides electrical theory and mechanical considerations for building the antenna, emphasizing the adjustment of stub length for proper impedance matching. This technical documentation is intended for amateur radio operators interested in homebrewing VHF antennas, offering practical insights into impedance matching techniques for vertical radiators.

This article explores the role of velocity factor (VF) in calculating stub lengths for VHF/UHF Baluns. It clarifies misconceptions about VF's relevance, distinguishing between coaxial cable interior fields and external stub fields. Practical examples, such as the Pawsey Stub and Coaxial Cable Balun, are analyzed alongside experimental findings. The results reveal that traditional VF adjustments are unnecessary for stubs with external fields but critical for internal coaxial applications. Historical and theoretical insights provide a comprehensive perspective for antenna enthusiasts and designers.

Constructing a **J-Pole antenna** from 450 Ohm ladder line for 2-meter (144 MHz) and 70-centimeter (440 MHz) operation involves specific calculations and assembly steps. The design, based on an earlier KD6GLF concept using 300 Ohm twinlead, features a ¾ wavelength radiator and a ¼ wavelength matching stub, functioning as an end-fed half-wave antenna without requiring ground radials. It offers a gain of 2.4 dB over isotropic. The resource provides the formulas for determining the lengths of the ¾ wave radiator and ¼ wave stub, incorporating a velocity factor of 91% for 450 Ohm ladder line. For 146 MHz, the radiator measures 55 3/16 inches and the stub 18 3/8 inches. Construction details include cutting a 57¾-inch piece of ladder line, stripping 4 inches from one end, and attaching a 24-inch section of RG58 or RG8X coax with a 3-5 turn RF choke. SWR adjustment is achieved by sliding a shorting bar or by incrementally trimming the elements at a 1:3 ratio (stub to radiator). The goal is a 1:1.1 SWR at 146 MHz, which typically yields 1:1.2 at 446 MHz. The article also discusses power handling, noting that while 10-15 watts is fine, 50 watts may increase SWR to 1:2.1, and advises keeping the antenna away from other objects to prevent coupling and SWR degradation.
