The Cubical Quad antenna is a popular choice among amateur radio operators due to its robust design and excellent performance characteristics. This resource provides essential scaling formulas that help determine the lengths of the antenna elements and the necessary gamma match values for various frequencies. The design is adaptable, allowing operators to optimize for gain or front-to-back ratio by adjusting the spacing between elements. The accompanying Excel files facilitate precise calculations, making it easier for both beginners and experienced hams to construct their own Cubical Quad antennas. In addition to the design formulas, the resource includes practical insights from the author, who has successfully built and utilized these antennas in various field events. The document outlines the tuning process for achieving minimum VSWR, ensuring optimal performance. With detailed illustrations and performance data, this guide serves as a comprehensive reference for anyone looking to delve into Cubical Quad antenna construction and optimization, enhancing their amateur radio experience.

Determining the actual need for an antenna tuner often hinges on the specific antenna and feed line configuration in use. While many hams believe a tuner is always essential, its primary role is to present a 50-ohm impedance to the transceiver, not to "tune" the antenna itself. For instance, a resonant dipole fed with _coaxial cable_ at its design frequency typically requires no tuner, as the feed line impedance closely matches the radio's output. However, operating a non-resonant antenna, or using a resonant antenna on multiple bands, frequently necessitates a tuner to manage high Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) on the feed line. The article clarifies that a tuner placed at the transceiver only matches the radio to the feed line, not the antenna to the feed line. For maximum efficiency with a non-resonant antenna, an _automatic antenna tuner_ (ATU) or a remote tuner placed at the antenna feed point is often more effective, minimizing losses in the feed line. The discussion also touches on the practical implications of SWR, noting that modern transceivers often fold back power at high SWR, making a tuner a practical necessity to achieve full output power, even if the antenna itself is not perfectly matched.

Construction details are thoroughly documented, from the use of hard-wall copper pipe for mast sections to the fabrication of custom loading coils. The author explains the necessity of an insulating brace for self-supporting coils and details a unique rotational alignment mechanism for off-center mounted coils to prevent snagging on overhead obstructions. He also describes a "Z" winding technique for 75-meter and 160-meter coils, which minimizes copper losses and manages dielectric losses. The resource provides specific loading coil data, including wire gauge, number of turns, coil length, and inductance values for bands from 18 MHz down to 2 MHz. It emphasizes that these coils may require fine-tuning based on individual vehicle and whip configurations, suggesting an antenna tuner for optimal mobile station operation across multiple HF bands.

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

Constructing a compact UHF Moxon antenna for portable radio or TV applications demands a small, easily transportable aerial. This project focuses on a straightforward build method rather than a specific frequency design, leveraging _MoxGen_ software by AC6LA to derive precise dimensions. The author's approach utilizes an epoxy printed circuit board as the support, with traces drawn by a special felt-tip pen for soldering the antenna elements after an etching bath. For high-frequency work, particularly in the GHz range, the choice of insulating material is critical; the article emphasizes the necessity of quality UHF or SHF-grade insulation. A standard SMA connector is integrated, with one element making electrical contact via the nut and the other soldered to the central pin. This ensures a robust feedpoint for the coaxial cable. The coaxial cable, fitted with its connector, is threaded through a 12mm PVC tube that functions as a mini-mast. This tube also defines the antenna's forward direction, which should be aimed at the target signal. A sanitary clamp at the base of the tube secures it to a photographic tripod via its 7mm thread, providing a stable and portable mounting solution.

A 50-ohm generator feeding a 50-ohm line connected to a _quarter-wave transformer_ (150 ohms) terminated in a 450-ohm load is analyzed to understand transient behavior. The paper meticulously tracks voltage and current waves, reflection coefficients, and power levels through a sequence of events, starting from quiescent conditions. It details how incident and reflected waves combine and interact at impedance discontinuities, illustrating the dynamic changes in impedance and SWR at various points in the system. The analysis reveals that the impedance at the interface between the 50-ohm line and the 150-ohm transformer changes from 150 ohms to **64.3 ohms** after the first reflected wave arrives. Subsequent reflections cause the impedance to asymptotically approach 50 ohms, reaching **53.22 ohms** after five wave terms. The study also examines the generator's reaction to transient SWR changes, noting that a 3:1 SWR can temporarily reduce generator output to 0.75 watts, but these effects are temporary and diminish as the system approaches steady-state conditions.

The article details a specific method for performing maintenance on a crank-up tower, focusing on cable and rotator replacement without a full power pulldown. It outlines the necessary equipment, including a 2-section extension ladder with a horn attachment and a two-piece, 6-foot steel pipe, specifying a 1 1/4-inch diameter. The procedure involves lowering tower sections onto the internal pipe to slacken cables, allowing for their removal and replacement, and also describes how to replace the rotator while the tower remains upright. Key steps involve using the pipe to support tower sections, enabling access to the cables and bearings. The author, N5AR, emphasizes safety by instructing the reader to remain on the ladder at all times, rather than climbing the tower itself. The process is presented as manageable for a single operator, with the author having successfully completed the task on a _UST TX472_ tower. Specific tools mentioned include Allen wrenches and end wrenches for cable ends and bearing bolts. The method provides a practical approach for tower upkeep, minimizing the complexity often associated with such tasks and allowing for maintenance of components like cable pulleys and their bearings.

Operating magnetic loop antennas requires careful consideration of RF safety, particularly regarding near-field magnetic field intensity. This resource presents calculations for magnetic field strength (H-field) at various distances from a magnetic loop, emphasizing that the H-field is significantly higher than the E-field in the near-field region due to the inductive nature of the radiating element. It provides specific formulas and examples for determining safe operating distances based on power levels and loop dimensions, crucial for compliance with RF exposure limits. The analysis compares calculated H-field values against FCC and ICNIRP maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits for controlled and uncontrolled environments. It demonstrates that even at QRP power levels (e.g., 5W), the H-field can exceed MPE limits within a few feet of the antenna, necessitating greater separation distances than often assumed for electric field considerations. The practical application of these calculations helps amateur radio operators configure their stations to ensure personnel safety and regulatory compliance when deploying compact, high-Q magnetic loop antennas.

Operating a ham station often involves encountering radio frequency interference (RFI), RF feedback, or RF burns, which are frequently misattributed to poor equipment grounding. This resource meticulously dissects these assumptions, asserting that RF grounds on the operating desk often merely mask more significant system flaws. It identifies five primary causes for RF problems, including antenna system design flaws, proximity of the antenna to the operating position, DC power supply ground loops, equipment design defects, and poorly installed connectors or defective cables. The content emphasizes that issues like "hot cabinets" or changes in SWR when connecting a ground indicate substantial RF flowing over wiring or cabinets, a phenomenon known as common-mode current. The article provides detailed explanations of common-mode current generation, particularly from single-wire fed antennas like longwires, random wires, and OCF dipoles, which inherently present high levels of RF in the shack. It also illustrates how vertical antennas, lacking a perfect ground system, can excite feed lines with significant common-mode current. Through simulations, the author demonstrates how a dipole without a proper _balun_ can cause RF problems at the operating desk, showing current patterns and voltage distributions on feed line shields. The discussion extends to the proper application of _RF isolators_ and _ferrite beads_, clarifying their role in modifying common-mode impedance on cable shields and cautioning against their use as a band-aid for fundamental system defects. The resource advocates for correcting the actual source of RF problems, such as antenna system issues or poor connector mounting, rather than relying on internal shack grounding or isolators. It highlights that properly functioning two-conductor feed lines, like coaxial or open-wire lines, should result in minimal RF levels at the operating position, even without a desk RF ground. The author shares personal experience, noting that his stations since the late 1970s have operated without RF grounds at the desks, relying instead on proper antenna system design and feed line integrity.

The Superantennas MP-1 portable HF antenna is analyzed for its design and field performance, particularly its high-Q loading coil and 3/8-inch mounting. The review details the antenna's construction, including an 8-inch vertical section, a large-diameter loading coil tuned by a sleeve, and a 4-foot whip that disassembles into six rods for transport. Initial testing with the supplied 10-foot ribbon cable "ground plane" yielded poor SWR and RF hot conditions, indicating an inadequate ground system. Further experimentation with longer radials and resonant counterpoises for each band improved matching and eliminated RF hot issues, but introduced significant operational complexity. The author notes the difficulty in optimizing both counterpoise length and coil setting without an antenna analyzer, and the sensitivity of the MP-1 to counterpoise deployment. The review also discusses the recommendation to tune for maximum received signals rather than minimum SWR, often necessitating an external ATU due to the antenna's typical low impedance. The **MP-1**'s critical dependence on resonant counterpoises for effective operation, especially when elevated, is highlighted as a major drawback for portable use. The author ultimately sold the antenna, concluding that despite its sound technical design, its fussy nature and the need for extensive counterpoise management or an ATU detract from its portability and convenience compared to simpler, less expensive dipole solutions. The **Superantennas MP-1** is deemed a flawed portable antenna, requiring considerable effort to achieve its claimed performance.

Key components include an SO-239 connector for the feedpoint and a **choke balun** made from coiled RG-58 coax, ensuring proper impedance matching and minimizing common mode current. The antenna measures approximately 29 inches deep by just under 7 feet long, making it suitable for portable operations. Specific dimensions, based on **Cebik's nomenclature**, are provided for the driven element and reflector. The resource also offers modeling hints, suggesting an effective element diameter of 1 inch for software simulations and emphasizing element sizing based on corner screws rather than end-to-end measurements.

Mobile RFI, often manifesting as persistent noise in the receiver even with the antenna disconnected, frequently originates from the vehicle's power supply system. This guide details systematic troubleshooting steps, beginning with isolating the radio from the car's 12-volt supply to confirm the power system as the noise source. It emphasizes the critical importance of drawing power directly from the battery using **heavy gauge wire**, bypassing the fuse block to leverage the battery's natural capacitance for RFI suppression and ensuring a solid RF ground. Proper routing of power lines through the firewall is also covered, advocating for dedicated grommeted holes to prevent inductive coupling from other wiring harnesses. The article stresses the necessity of fusing both positive and negative leads from the battery, a crucial safety measure to prevent damage to the rig and mitigate high-current risks should the battery's engine block ground become compromised during service. Addressing **alternator whine**, a common high-pitched noise that varies with engine speed, the resource suggests checking battery connections and the alternator-to-battery harness for looseness or corrosion. It also mentions the utility of adding an external RF noise suppression capacitor in parallel with the alternator's internal capacitor for enhanced filtering, and the effectiveness of commercially available in-line power supply filters.
