PA3FWM's software defined radio (SDR) page documents his extensive hardware and software development efforts between 2004 and 2009. Initial experiments utilized a direct conversion receiver with 90-degree phase difference, feeding a PC soundcard at 48 kHz sample rate, covering 24 kHz of spectrum around a 7080.5 kHz local oscillator. This setup, similar to AC50G's QEX 2002 article, allowed for basic I/Q signal processing to distinguish signals above and below the LO frequency. Limitations included fixed crystal frequencies, 16-bit dynamic range, and narrow bandwidth. Subsequent hardware iterations aimed for enhanced performance, incorporating external 24-bit ADCs with 192 kHz sample rates, connected via 10 Mbit/s Ethernet. A **MC145170-based PLL** and programmable octave divider provided a 58 kHz to 30 MHz tuning range. The **Tayloe mixer** was employed, with differential outputs feeding a PCM1804 ADC. An ATmega32 microcontroller handled serial data conversion to Ethernet frames, though without CRC calculation due to processing constraints. Later designs integrated AD7760 2.5 Msamples/second ADCs and a Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA, enabling direct reception of 0-1 MHz spectrum and eventually 2.5 MHz bandwidth across the shortwave spectrum. Software was refactored to use an initial 8192 non-windowed FFT for efficient high-bandwidth processing. The project culminated in a two-way QSO on 21 MHz using the developed hardware and software, demonstrating transmit capabilities with a D/A converter. The system exhibited a 2.5 MHz wide spectrum display and a zoomed 19 kHz display, capturing signals like ionospheric chirp sounders and RTTY contest activity. Challenges included noise leakage from digital circuitry and cooling for high-power dissipation components.

KK4OBI's article delves into the operational principles, using a 6 and 10-meter Tri-pole as a primary example, and provides comprehensive instructions for constructing any Tri-pole antenna within the 6 to 15-meter range. Key to the Tri-pole's performance is its off-center feed, necessitating a common mode choke at the feed point for optimal tuning and reduced noise. The author outlines a methodical approach to determining element dimensions, starting with a vertical element frequency calculated as 0.47 times the sum of the desired upper and lower band frequencies. This calculation, along with K-values derived from trend lines, guides the initial lengths for the horizontal arms, demonstrating how a 10m-6m Tri-pole can achieve a total horizontal length 78% shorter than a conventional 10-meter dipole. Tuning and balancing are critical, with the article detailing adjustments to arm lengths and the vertical element to achieve balanced SWR values, as validated through 4NEC2 simulations. Radiation patterns are analyzed at various elevations, showing gains around 5.7 dBi and favorable take-off angles for DX contacts. Construction details specify aluminum tubing dimensions, U-bolts, and an SO-239 connector, emphasizing the importance of a ferrite-based choke for wideband operation.

Mitigating impulse-type noise, a common challenge in the **HF radio spectrum**, often requires specialized processing before the signal reaches the transceiver's receiver stages. The NR-1 addresses this by functioning as an RF interference removal device, specifically a noise blanker, targeting transient noise sources. Its operational range extends from 1.6 MHz to beyond 70 MHz, making it suitable for various amateur radio bands and general shortwave listening applications. Unlike QRM eliminators or X-phasers, the NR-1 does not require a separate noise antenna for its operation, simplifying its integration into existing station setups. The device's design focuses on wideband performance, allowing its use both within and outside the allocated amateur radio frequencies. Documentation detailing its operation is available, providing insights into its technical specifications and deployment. This unit is a hardware product, conceptualized and implemented by SV3ORA.

Clarifies the intricate process of calibrating the _Elecraft K2_ dial, addressing common user challenges and lively discussions on the Elecraft reflector. Wilhelm, W3FPR, dissects the K2's PLL synthesizer design, chosen for its low phase noise, kit-friendly duplication, and cost-effective components. The resource emphasizes the critical role of the 4000.000 kHz reference oscillator's accuracy during CAL PLL, CAL FIL, and CAL FCTR functions, noting its dependence on temperature and crystal stability for optimal performance. Explaining the K2's frequency display, the document reveals it relies on microprocessor-driven look-up tables generated by CAL PLL for VFO values and CAL FIL for BFO values. In SSB and RTTY, these combine, while CW and CWr modes also factor in the sidetone pitch. The author details inherent limitations, such as the 10 Hz increment resolution of the dial and varying PLL step sizes—from 3 Hz on 160 meters to 10 Hz on 10 meters. BFO increments range from 20 to 35 Hz, collectively limiting practical dial accuracy to within **20 Hz** with diligent effort, or **30 Hz** for a slightly less demanding task. The guide outlines a four-step calibration procedure: setting the reference oscillator, running CAL PLL, running CAL FIL, and setting all BFOs. It highlights the _N6KR Method_ as a particularly easy and accurate approach, requiring only the K2 and a known frequency source like WWV for zero-beating, eliminating the need for external test equipment.

WB8LZR details the construction and initial field results of a multi-band vertical wire antenna, designed to complement his existing horizontal loop for improved DX on 80 meters. The antenna utilizes a 67-foot vertical wire, configured as a quarter-wave radiator on 80m, and employs a 1:1 current balun for RF isolation on 80m, 30m, and 17m. For bands like 40m, 20m, and 10m, where the wire acts as a half-wave or full-wave radiator, an additional impedance transforming _unun_ is integrated to manage the significantly higher feedpoint impedance and voltage. The author notes the vertical's performance as a receiving antenna, observing reduced noise compared to his main horizontal loop, particularly on 80m, and even hearing some long-path signals the loop missed. Initial QRP contacts, including a **1-watt** QSO with a _VP2 station_ on 30m, demonstrate its transmit capability. While the radial system is currently rudimentary, the project outlines practical considerations for multi-band vertical deployment and impedance matching.

This article clarifies the roles of baluns, ununs, common mode chokes, line isolators, and impedance transformers in amateur radio. A balun decouples balanced antennas from unbalanced feed lines, preventing interference. Ununs serve a similar purpose for asymmetrical antennas. Common mode chokes and line isolators suppress common mode currents, reducing noise. Impedance transformers adjust antenna impedance to match feed lines but do not decouple or suppress common mode currents. Understanding these components is crucial for optimizing antenna performance and minimizing interference.

The "Beginner’s Guide to Small-station EME" by Paul Bock, K4MSG, offers an insightful look into Earth-Moon-Earth communication, a fascinating aspect of VHF and above amateur radio. This presentation demystifies moonbounce, explaining how two-way radio contacts are made by reflecting signals off the Moon. K4MSG highlights the historical context of EME, noting the substantial investment and technical challenges that once characterized these operations, often requiring setups like the W5UN "Mighty Big Array" (MBA). Historically, path loss exceeding 250 dB, spatial polarization offset, Faraday rotation, and galactic noise made EME a formidable pursuit, with CW being the mode of choice for signals that had to be audibly detectable. Equipment limitations in noise figure and coax performance further compounded the difficulty for early moonbouncers. However, the landscape of amateur EME dramatically shifted around 2003 with the introduction of the JT65 software. This innovation, specifically designed for EME, allowed for signal decoding well below the noise floor, making small-station EME a practical reality for more hams using common transceivers and less complex antenna systems.
