Ham radio communication in the VHF and UHF bands, which was previously dominated by analog Frequency Modulation (FM), is increasingly incorporating Digital Voice (DV) modes. DV transceivers digitize audio and offer benefits like as signal integrity, encoded caller ID, and bandwidth savings. Today D-STAR, DMR and Yaesu System Fusion (YSF) are popular DV formats, each with its own set of features but mainly incompatible with the others. Internet access with Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) expands DV communication worldwide. Repeaters and personal hotspots expand DV capabilities, enabling seamless worldwide connections. However, implementing DV frequently necessitates learning new technologies and negotiating network complexity.

This software connects to a DMR master using the MMDVM protocol, enabling a ChatGPT-powered AI bot for voice interaction. It comprises a main program (a DMR/D-Star client handling audio via AMBEServer) and a Python script for audio processing via APIs. OpenAI Whisper handles speech recognition, while Google Translate powers text-to-speech, supporting multilingual interaction. Clear, polite questions improve recognition. If silent for over one second, the bot provides local weather, with forecasts available on request. English performs best for recognition accuracy.

Connecting to the global *EchoLink* network via a web browser simplifies internet linking for licensed amateur radio operators. This web application provides a direct interface, eliminating the need for client software installation. Users can log in with their validated callsign and password to access the system, facilitating contacts with other stations, repeaters, and conferences worldwide, much like traditional VoIP applications but tailored for amateur radio. The interface offers essential controls for managing connections, including selecting specific stations or conferences from a dropdown list, initiating a connection, and disconnecting. Features such as a 'Call CQ' button allow users to signal their availability for a contact, while options for low bandwidth operation and accepting incoming connections optimize performance and accessibility. Audio device selection ensures proper microphone and speaker integration with the web client. Validation of an amateur radio license is a prerequisite for full access, ensuring that only authorized operators utilize the network. The system prompts unvalidated users to provide an email address and password to begin the validation process, which typically involves submitting proof of license. This free service extends the reach of amateur radio communications globally, bridging geographical distances through internet connectivity.

Demonstrates the construction of 'The Virgin', a **direct-conversion receiver** specifically designed for the 40m amateur radio band. This project, completed in February 2016, features a fixed operating frequency determined by a crystal oscillator, requiring a physical crystal change to alter the reception frequency. The design incorporates two integrated circuits and a power regulator, emphasizing simplicity with a single control knob. The author details the initial design, subsequent modifications to the front end, and troubleshooting steps addressing common issues like audio motorboating and power supply instability. The resource presents the final design of the receiver, reflecting the author's first experience building such a unit between December 2015 and February 2016. It offers practical insights into basic circuit construction and the iterative process of refining a homebrew radio project. The content is particularly relevant for those interested in fundamental receiver principles and hands-on **QRP** transceiver building.

SWLTools, an iOS application for iPhone and iPad running iOS 17+, provides real-time decoding of various digital modes. It automatically locks onto CW tones, measures sending speed, and collects callsigns, distinguishing valid entries from misreads for a reliable log. For RTTY and SITOR-B, the app allows users to set shift and speed, then automatically tunes to the two tones for text reception, supporting marine bulletins, press agencies, and NAVTEX. The application also decodes WEFAX, building charts line by line for direct saving to the photo library, and processes ACARS aircraft messages, including CRC checks for data integrity and mapping of position reports. Beyond decoding, SWLTools integrates a GPU-accelerated FFT spectrum analyzer, a scrolling waterfall display with frequency cursors, and an adjustable FIR bandpass filter to isolate signals. It supports IQ signal analysis from receivers via two-channel audio interfaces, correcting mirror images. Flexible audio input options include the built-in microphone, USB audio dongles, and Bluetooth sources, with diagnostics for audio routing and buffer status. The app records audio, plays it back, and converts recordings into shareable videos, while decoded texts and charts are also savable and shareable, with all timestamps in UTC.

Andrew Roos (ZS6AA) details his practical approach to building a Single Operator Two Radio contest station within suburban constraints. The article explains how he leveraged a Force-12 C-31XR triband beam's unique separate feed arrangement to operate on two bands simultaneously. Using band-pass filters and an antenna switch, he achieved sufficient isolation between bands without requiring multiple towers. The setup includes automatic band selection, audio switching, and computer control. Testing during the 2007 CQ WPX CW contest confirmed the system's effectiveness, demonstrating that competitive SO2R operation is achievable with limited space and budget.

Understanding how radio frequency interference (RFI) is coupled into equipment and subsequently detected is crucial for amateur radio operators. This guide delves into the fundamental mechanisms of RFI, particularly focusing on detection at semiconductor junctions and the unintended antenna action of system wiring. It explains that most RFI detection follows a square law, meaning a 6 dB reduction in RF signal can result in a 12 dB drop in detected audio, offering a practical approach to mitigation. The resource also clarifies the concept of common mode versus differential mode signals, detailing how cable imperfections can convert common mode antenna current into differential signals. It addresses the critical "Pin 1 Problem" in audio interfacing, a common design flaw where cable shields connect to the circuit board instead of the shielding enclosure, leading to significant RFI issues. Practical solutions, such as proper shielding, using twisted-pair cables, and strategic bonding of equipment, are discussed to effectively reduce or eliminate RFI. The guide emphasizes the importance of proper filtering and the often-misunderstood concept of "ground" in electrical systems, distinguishing between earth ground, equipment ground, and circuit common. It provides insights into minimizing loop area in wiring to reduce inductively coupled noise and antenna action, drawing on the author's extensive engineering background and ham radio experience.

This article describes a DIY RF field strength meter project inspired by VK3YE's "The Squeakie" design. The device, built around a 555 timer IC and a 1N4148 diode, converts RF signal strength into audible tones with proportional pitch. The author enhanced the original design by adding volume control, LED indication, and digital readout capabilities using an Arduino Nano and LCD display. The completed project functions as a versatile RF detection tool, suitable for antenna testing and fox hunting, while offering multiple output methods: audio, visual, and digital measurement display.
