Selecting an appropriate antenna system for shortwave broadcasting involves evaluating various types based on performance, cost, and operational parameters. This resource details the critical specifications for broadcast antennas, including average and peak power ratings, directivity, takeoff angle (TOA), horizontal beamwidth, and gain, emphasizing that a 100-kW transmitter requires an antenna rated for 150 kW average and 400 kW peak. It clarifies that low TOA signals travel thousands of kilometers, while high TOA is for local coverage, and nearly all modern shortwave broadcast antennas are horizontally polarized. The article explores specific antenna types, such as Log-Periodic Antennas (LPAs), which offer wide frequency ranges (e.g., 2-30 MHz) and directional patterns with 11 dBi gain, costing from $20K to over $100K for multi-curtain versions. Dipole arrays, also known as curtain antennas, are prevalent in international broadcasting, featuring steerable beams (±15° and ±30°) and mode-switching capabilities to alter TOA, with high/low pairs costing over $1 million. Fan dipoles are noted for omnidirectional patterns, smaller size, and lower cost for low-power applications, while rhombics, though simple, require resistive termination and incur several dB of I2R losses. Balun considerations are crucial, as most communications baluns are not rated for the higher average and peak powers of AM broadcast transmitters. Modern shortwave antennas utilize durable materials like Alumoweld wire rope for radiators and support elements, avoiding copper, fiberglass, or materials prone to stretching or deterioration. Feeder systems for high-power stations often require tapered-line baluns to convert 50-ohm unbalanced power to 300-ohm balanced for connection to the antenna.

The total length of this antenna is 41m, height is about 11m, and diameter of element is 2mm. JA7KPI modified this antenna originally used as Inverted-V type of 80m band Dipole. Works on 40 - 80 meters band with acceptable swr.

This document by W4HM explains the construction and usage of a 160 meter balanced coaxial receiving loop antenna, which can be easily adapted for the 40 and 80 meters bands. The content provides detailed instructions on building the antenna, its advantages, and how to optimize its performance for amateur radio operations. It is a valuable resource for radio amateurs looking to improve their receiving capabilities and enhance their overall radio communication experience.

A PIC16F876 microprocessor-based digital SWR/WATTmeter project provides automatic operation across the 1.8 to 60 MHz frequency range. This design displays both SWR and P.E.P. power values, incorporating a bar graph on the second LCD line for instantaneous power tracking. The directional coupler utilizes a single-wire coil on a ferrite FT50-43 toroid, balanced with a 60 pF trimmer, and employs 1N5711 Schottky diodes for detection, ensuring linearity and a power range of 5 to 120 W. The software, developed by IW3EGT, compensates for diode voltage drop for precise readings, updating power every two seconds for stable display of modulated carriers, while the bar graph updates ten times per second for near real-time feedback. Calibration involves two phases: adjusting the directional coupler for minimum SWR on a 50-ohm dummy load at 28 MHz, and calibrating the microprocessor system by inputting a calculated power value (Power (Watt) = (Vout + 0.5)^2 / 100) at 14-21 MHz. The project includes PCB layouts for both the directional coupler (two-layer copper board) and the PIC module (single-sided), with specific instructions for component placement and shielding to prevent RF interference. The design allows for modification of power reading capability by varying the number of turns in the coupler coil, catering to different power levels.

The N0KHQ Coax Square antenna, designed for 17 meters and built using RG-58 coaxial cable, presents an intriguing option for hams with limited space. L. B. Cebik, _W4RNL_, meticulously models and analyzes this array, clarifying its classification not as a modified Moxon, but as a distinct member of the "dual-coupled, 2-element, parasitic array" family. The design leverages the velocity factor of RG-58 (approximately 0.66-0.67) to achieve significantly shorter element lengths compared to full-size counterparts, resulting in a perimeter of 42 feet for the N0KHQ array versus 54 feet for a standard Moxon. _NEC_ modeling reveals the coax square's performance characteristics, including a forward gain of 5.6 dBi and a 23.7 dB front-to-back ratio on 18.118 MHz. While slightly less gain than a Moxon (6.0 dBi), its pattern exhibits Yagi-like nulls at 90 degrees, distinguishing it from the Moxon's wider beamwidth. The article also delves into the unique feedpoint considerations, explaining how the split braid and center conductor of the RG-58 driver effectively form a folded dipole, allowing for impedance transformation to achieve a good match for 50-Ohm cable. Despite its shortened elements, which inherently narrow the operating bandwidth, the coax square maintains satisfactory performance across the 17-meter band. The analysis emphasizes that while SWR curves are important, a holistic view of gain and pattern degradation across the band is crucial. This antenna is a viable solution for operators needing a compact, directional array, particularly for narrow bands like 17, 30, or 12 meters, where its high-Q performance is most effective.

This resource details the computer-optimized design of the _ZS6BKW_ multiband dipole, an evolution of the classic _G5RV_ antenna. It begins by referencing the original 1958 RSGB Bulletin article by Louis Varney G5RV, explaining the operational principles of the G5RV's flat-top and open-wire feedline on 20m and 40m, noting its impedance transformation characteristics for valve amplifiers of that era. The article then transitions to the rationale for optimizing the design for contemporary solid-state transceivers requiring a 50 Ohm match. The core of the project involves using computer modeling to determine optimal lengths for the flat-top and matching section, aiming for a VSWR of less than 2:1 on multiple HF bands. It discusses the process of calculating feedpoint impedance based on antenna length and frequency, referencing professional literature from Professor R.W.P. King at Harvard University. The analysis also considers the characteristic impedance (Z(O)) of the open-wire line, identifying a broad peak of adequate values between 275 and 400 Ohms. Specific design parameters for the improved ZS6BKW are presented, including a shorter flat-top and a longer matching section compared to the original G5RV, with a velocity factor of 0.85 for the 300 Ohm tape. The article confirms acceptable matches on 7, 14, 18, 24, and 28 MHz bands when erected horizontally at 13m, and also discusses performance in an inverted-V configuration, noting frequency shifts. The author, Brian Austin ZS6BKW, emphasizes the antenna's suitability for modern 50 Ohm coaxial cable without a balun.

M0VEY shares insights into constructing a 160-meter mobile DX aerial, detailing the process of sourcing materials and assembly. The project began with a goal to avoid a £50 commercial antenna, instead utilizing a £10 reel of _enamelled copper wire_ and salvaged components like alloy tent poles and plastic water pipe. A friend fabricated a custom stainless steel tube for mounting, featuring a 3/8” thread for a mag-mount, enabling secure vehicle attachment. The aerial's design incorporates four alloy tubes, one plastic tube, and a five-foot whip, engineered to split into two pieces for convenient storage. The loading coil, wound with approximately 115 feet of 0.75mm wire onto a plastic former, was then sealed with blue heat shrink. M0VEY reports successful operation, making contacts across the UK and Europe, with the aerial standing about ten feet tall for local nets at 1.972 MHz and taller for the DX window around 1.845 MHz. Future plans include a base-loaded 160m aerial and an 80m version, leveraging components from the existing _160m DX Mobile Aerial_ to maintain a similar overall size with a smaller coil.

Constructing a high-gain, compact antenna for 2 meters often involves balancing theoretical performance with practical build challenges. WB8AHT recounts his journey in building a 6-element _Super Duper Moxon_ antenna for 144 MHz, inspired by designs from M0PXS and GW3YDX. He initially encountered discrepancies in published dimensions for the _HAARP Antenna_ and the _Super Moxon_, leading to on-air SWR issues and suboptimal performance. His methodical approach involved cross-referencing, direct communication with Phil Simpson (M0PXS), and iterative adjustments to element lengths based on observed results and a _SARK-110 Antenna Analyzer_ scan. After modifying the reflector/driven element and third director dimensions, the antenna achieved a respectable 1.35:1 SWR at 144.200 MHz. Field testing with 50 watts yielded contacts up to 500 miles, suggesting performance close to the 15 dBi gain predicted by _4NEC2_ software, despite its compact 40-inch boom. The article includes specific construction notes, such as tubing sizes (1/2-inch and 3/8-inch aluminum) and feedpoint spacing (50mm). The author's experience highlights the importance of real-world validation for antenna designs, even those with strong theoretical backing. He provides a table of tubing lengths for 6m, 4m, and 2m versions, along with his final, optimized dimensions, offering a practical blueprint for fellow hams interested in replicating or further experimenting with this high-performance, small-footprint VHF antenna.

A 37.6-meter Morgain antenna design provides dual-band operation on 80 and 160 meters without traps. Designing **Moxon Rectangle** antennas often involves an urge among builders to find simple "magic formulas" for element lengths. L. B. Cebik, W4RNL, argues against this simplistic approach, emphasizing that antenna dimensions do not scale linearly and are influenced by factors like wire size and height above ground. This resource presents a procedure for developing sensible design equations, starting with uniform-diameter elements and perfectly conductive materials, with adjustments for real-world materials like copper and aluminum. The core of the method involves judicious **NEC modeling** (versions 2, 3, or 4) to create a baseline dataset for regression analysis, ensuring models meet specific performance standards for gain, front-to-back ratio, and feedpoint impedance. The derived equations, presented as a BASIC program, allow for calculating Moxon dimensions (A through E) based on wire diameter in wavelengths and design frequency. W4RNL demonstrates the efficacy of these equations by designing and testing Moxon Rectangles for 7.15 MHz (AWG #12 wire), 28.5 MHz (1" tubing), and 146 MHz (0.125" rod). Modeled performance data, including gain, front-to-back ratio, and feedpoint impedance, are provided for both perfect and real-world materials, showing high efficiency and close adherence to design goals. The article also references a standalone Windows program by AC6LA that automates these calculations and generates EZNEC or NEC models.

Constructing a portable, high-gain antenna for _AO-40_ satellite operations presents unique challenges, particularly regarding mechanical stability and parabolic accuracy. This resource details the build of a 1.2-meter "brolly dish" antenna, utilizing a non-conducting fiberglass umbrella frame as its foundation. The project outlines a method for achieving a parabolic shape using stressed aluminum fly screen mesh, guided by practical geometry and a temporary dowel template. Key steps include selecting an appropriate umbrella with a suitable f/D ratio (ideally >0.25), removing the original fabric, and precisely cutting and attaching eight segments of fly screen to the struts to form the reflective surface. The construction process, which took approximately five hours for the author, _G6LVB_, resulted in a dish with an f/D of 0.27 (depth=270mm, diameter=1160mm, f=310mm). The article also describes a modification to a _TransSystem AIDC_ feed, incorporating a PCB reflector behind the dipole for easier mounting. Performance tests at a squint angle of 15 deg and a range of 50,000km yielded a signal-to-noise ratio of 33dB on the S2 beacon and 23dB for SSB signals, indicating strong reception. The author notes that the modified umbrella may not close fully without risking surface disfigurement.

The ZS6BKW antenna, a popular multiband wire antenna, offers improved band matching compared to the traditional G5RV. This construction guide details the process, beginning with specific dimensions: 13.11 meters (43 feet) for the 450-ohm ladder line and initial dipole arm lengths of approximately 14.8 meters each. It emphasizes the critical role of an _antenna analyzer_ for accurate tuning, particularly for determining the velocity factor of the ladder line and achieving a 1:1 impedance match. The article outlines the materials required, including a 1:1 current balun, 450-ohm window line, wire for the dipole arms, and a 50-ohm non-inductive resistor for testing. It provides a step-by-step procedure for cutting the ladder line to its electrical half-wavelength, explaining how to calculate the velocity factor using measured and free-space frequencies. For instance, a measured 50-ohm impedance at 12.54 MHz with a calculated free-space half-wavelength frequency of 11.44 MHz yields a velocity factor of 0.91. Final adjustments involve hoisting the antenna to its operational height and fine-tuning the dipole arm lengths to achieve optimal SWR, specifically targeting 14.200 MHz. The _ZS6BKW_ design is noted for its performance on 80m, 40m, 20m, 10m, and 6m, though it is not optimized for 15m operation. The author, _VK4MDX_, shares practical tips for durable construction using stainless steel wire and cable clamps.

The W4NFR 40-meter mobile vertical antenna project details the construction of a mobile antenna system, drawing inspiration from a July 2011 QST article by VE6AB. The design simplifies the top hat by integrating an 8-spoke top hat from Tar Heel Antenna. The resource outlines the tuning process, which involves adjusting the L1 coil for the desired band segment and then fine-tuning SWR with an L2 coil at the feed point. The author achieved a 1:1 SWR at 7.150 MHz with this configuration. The project includes specific instructions for adding anti-sway supports to ensure stable operation and reduce physical stress on the ball mount during vehicle motion. Visual aids such as drawings of the 40-meter mobile antenna, detailed views of the coil and top hat assembly, and an illustration of the ball and spring mount are provided to guide the builder through the construction and installation phases. The content focuses on practical implementation and tuning for optimal performance on the 40-meter band.
