A 10-20 meters coverage delta loop antenna. After relocating, DL2HCB designed a multiband loop antenna to cover 10-20m with an open-wire feed for impedance matching and compact installation. Inspired by the mini-X-Q design, a modified 10m delta-loop was built, enhanced with a 1/4 wave shorted stub for 28 MHz using 450-ohm ladder line. The antenna delivers east-west broadside radiation and performs as a closed loop on other bands. Operational tests yielded strong European signals and successful DX contacts, including a 20m QRP QSO with FY/DJ0PJ.

The G5RV antenna, with an overall length of **31.10m (102ft)**, functions as a 3/2-wave on 20 meters when installed horizontally at 12m (39ft), exhibiting a resonant frequency of 14.150MHz and an approximate resistance of 80 ohms. Its 10.36m (34ft) stub line, designed as a 1/2-wave on 14.150MHz with a 0.97 velocity coefficient, acts as an impedance transformer across other bands, aiming for multiband operation without traps. On 20m and higher frequencies, the G5RV demonstrates improved gain compared to a standard dipole, attributed to the _collinear effect_ from multiple 1/2-waves along the wire. The original design sought a multiband solution for limited spaces, often requiring an Antenna Tuning Unit (ATU) for effective operation across bands like 80, 40, 30, and 20m, particularly with modern solid-state PAs. Variants, such as the F8CI modification, incorporate a 1/4 current balun at the stub line's base for symmetrical-to-asymmetrical transition, known as a _remote balun_. Proper flat-top or inverted-V installation is critical for maintaining symmetry and collinear gain, with inverted-V apex angles below 120° progressively diminishing higher-band performance.

This antenna is fed for vertical polarisation, to give a low angle of radiation for DX and also a nearly omni-directional radiation pattern.

It details the construction of a loading coil using 20 turns of #12 solid wire, 1.25-inch ID, spread to 5 inches, and provides tap points: 8 turns for 40m and 4 turns for 20m, connecting one end to the feed point and the other to ground. The resource presents specific SWR results, noting a 1:1 match at 7.258 MHz on 40m and 14.275 MHz on 20m, with SWR remaining below 1.5:1 across significant portions of the General phone segments. It highlights a noticeable improvement in both transmit and receive performance compared to a straight antenna setup, emphasizing the practical application of this matching method for mobile installations, particularly on a fender-mounted ball mount.

A self-supporting vertical antenna design for stationary-mobile HF-VHF operation is presented, emphasizing ease of construction with common materials like a fiberglass fishing rod and PVC pipe. The design focuses on creating a set of no-tuner monoband radiators for bands such as **2m**, **6m**, 10m, and 12m, with an overall radiator support length of 3.3m. The construction process details the assembly of the antenna base using a magnetic mount, PL-259 connector, and PVC pipe sections, which then supports the telescopic fishing rod. Radiator extensions are cut to achieve quarter-wave resonance on specific bands, with detailed instructions for 6m (50-51 MHz), 10m (28.5 MHz), and 12m (24.9 MHz). For lower HF bands like 15m, 17m, and 20m, the design incorporates base-loading coils, with specific turn counts provided (e.g., 21 turns for 20m). The project also suggests using an _antenna analyzer_ for precise tuning of extensions and coils, moving beyond theoretical values to achieve optimal performance. The author, _IK1ZYW_, notes that for 80m and 160m, the antenna becomes less efficient as a vertical, suggesting alternative configurations like an inverted-V dipole or asymmetrical inverted-L.

The G3TPW CobWebb antenna design provides a compact, horizontally polarized, omni-directional solution for 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m bands. This antenna utilizes five full-size half-wave dipoles, each bent into a square configuration to achieve omni-directional radiation without the nulls typically found in straight dipoles. The design incorporates a single 50-ohm coaxial feedline with an integrated air-core choke balun, minimizing feeder radiation and reducing EMC issues. Construction details include using PVC-covered multi-stranded copper twin cable for elements, supported by a fiberglass cross. The document specifies tapping points for impedance matching to 50 ohms on all five bands, ensuring high radiation efficiency without lossy traps or loading coils. Physical dimensions are compact, with 2.6-meter (8.5 feet) sides and a total weight of 6 kg (14 lbs), making it suitable for mounting on a 20-foot aluminum scaffold pole. Detailed instructions for assembling the junction box, including terminal strip wiring and the coaxial choke balun, are provided with photographs and diagrams. The design emphasizes a confined electric field to reduce coupling to nearby conductors, which helps mitigate TVI and makes the antenna less sensitive to mounting height or ground conductivity.

Normal mode helix antennas offer a solution for HF mobile operators facing significant height restrictions, such as those parking in indoor garages with limited overhead clearance. This design, adapted from concepts typically applied to VHF/UHF rubber duck antennas, allows for extremely shortened HF radiators that remain effective for county hunting and general mobile operation. The resource details the construction of a 20-meter helix antenna, approximately 10 inches long, wound with #14 AWG THHN wire on a 1 1/2-inch CPVC form, mounted on a standard 3/8 x 24 antenna stud. Mark Herson, _N2MH_, shares his experience developing these antennas, including initial research from the _RSGB VHF UHF Manual_ and practical winding experiments to establish the relationship between turns and resonant frequency. He provides coil data for various frequencies, emphasizing that these measurements were taken with an _MFJ-259a_ antenna analyzer and are dependent on the vehicle's grounding system. Despite their shortened nature, N2MH confirms the antennas' operational effectiveness, citing contacts with KL1V in Alaska on 20 meters and E-skip contacts on 10 meters. The design prioritizes continuous deployment without removal, making it suitable for operators who frequently navigate height-restricted environments.

The cross arms are constructed from three 1-meter sections, allowing for convenient packing. This portable setup was successfully deployed adjacent to the ocean, enabling over 4500 QSOs in six days with 100W, achieving easy contacts into Japan and Asia. The design emphasizes ease of erection by a single operator and robust performance in challenging environments. Components for the cross arms were sourced from Spiderbeam. Further information is available via M1PAF's QRZ.com details.

Understanding antenna gain is crucial for optimizing an amateur radio station's performance, particularly when evaluating shortened or compromised antenna designs. This resource provides a simplified explanation of antenna gain, focusing on the concept of _capture area_ to demystify the often-complex mathematical formulas found in antenna theory texts. It contrasts full-size dipoles with shortened versions, illustrating how physical length directly impacts an antenna's ability to intercept or radiate RF energy. The article presents practical examples, such as a 20m dipole with **0 dB/d** gain and a shortened 20m antenna exhibiting **-6 dB** less gain due to reduced capture area. It further details the significant efficiency losses in various shortened ground plane antennas for 40m and 160m, showing how a 40m center-loaded ground plane might only radiate **7%** of input power. These comparisons highlight the trade-offs involved in using physically small antennas and underscore the importance of minimizing coil losses for effective operation.

This multiband wire antenna it is an off centre fed dipole, with 10 feet of vertical radiator, needs no tuner on 40m, 20m and 10m and works fine on all bands above 40m with a tuner, and even below 40m on 60m, and 80m.

This innovative design utilizes a capacitor for resonance on the 80-meter band and a resistor to manage static charges. The CL-OCFD enhances bandwidth and simplifies operation, making it a significant advancement on OCF Dipole design.

Demonstrates the construction and performance of an updated ZS6BKW multiband dipole, a variant of the _G5RV_ antenna, specifically designed for HF operation. The article details a real-world installation using 13.5m copper wire elements and 12.2m of 450 Ohm ladder line, configured as a sloping inverted-V with the apex at 10m and ends at 4m above ground. It covers the critical aspect of impedance matching, incorporating an 8-turn choke balun at the feedline transition to RG-58U coax to mitigate RF common mode current. Measurements confirm favorable SWR readings below **1.3:1** on 7.1 MHz, 14.11 MHz, 18.06 MHz, and 24.8 MHz, indicating effective resonance across 40m, 20m, 17m, and 12m bands. The installation also shows usable SWR dips on 3.55 MHz (5:1), 29.02 MHz (2:1), and 50.84 MHz (3:1), extending its utility to 80m, 10m, and 6m with an antenna tuning unit. This resource details the construction and feeding of a vertical Moxon antenna specifically designed for the 20-meter band (14 MHz). It addresses the common issue of impedance variations at the feed point of vertical dipoles and Moxons, which typically requires the coax to exit at a specific angle (45-90 degrees) to maintain a good 50-ohm match. The presented solution involves opening the lower corner of the fed element and utilizing a transformer for impedance matching, simplifying installation and improving SWR. The alternative feeding method provides a stable match, eliminating the need for precise coax routing to achieve a low SWR. This design offers a practical improvement over conventional vertical Moxon feeding, making deployment significantly easier. The author, SM0DTK, confirms the efficacy of this setup, noting its fine performance and reduced installation complexity compared to traditional methods.

The ZS6BKW multiband HF antenna, a design by ZS6BKW (G0GSF), functions effectively on multiple HF bands without requiring an Antenna Tuning Unit (ATU) for 40, 20, 17, 12, 10, and 6 meters. This antenna, approximately **27.51 meters** (90 feet) long with a 12.2-meter (40-foot) open-wire feeder, is a direct descendant of the _G5RV_ but offers superior multi-band resonance. It can be deployed as a horizontal dipole or an inverted-vee, with the latter requiring only a single support and maintaining an apex angle of at least 90 degrees to prevent signal cancellation. Performance data, recorded with an MFJ Antenna Analyser, indicates SWR values of 1:1 on 7.00 MHz (40m) and 14.06 MHz (20m), with SWR below 1.3:1 on 17m, 10m, and 6m. While primarily designed for these bands, the antenna can be adapted for 80m, 30m, and 15m with an ATU, preferably at the balanced feeder's base. The use of 450-ohm twin-lead for the feeder is recommended over 300-ohm for improved strength and reduced losses, especially in adverse weather conditions. This design, originally published in _RadCom_ in 1993 and featured in Pat Hawker’s "Antenna Topics," provides a compact and efficient solution for HF operation, particularly for those with limited space or resources.

This resource provides access to the design files, likely containing critical parameters such as element spacing, element lengths, and boom dimensions, which are essential for replicating these directional antennas. The designs focus on achieving wide bandwidth, a desirable characteristic for contesters and DXers operating across a significant portion of each band. The content specifically references "nw3z-Antenna-DesignsDownload," indicating that the core information is available as a downloadable file, presumably in a format suitable for antenna modeling software or direct construction. Such files typically include **NEC models** or similar data, allowing for performance analysis and optimization before physical construction. The emphasis on "optimized wideband" suggests design considerations for SWR bandwidth and gain characteristics over a broader frequency range than typical narrow-band Yagis. The resource serves as a direct source for specific, proven antenna designs from a known amateur radio antenna designer, offering practical data for hams interested in building high-performance Yagi arrays for HF.

This wire-beam has one radiator-element, feeded with 450-Ohm-Wireman-twinlead and needs an antenna-tuner. For the bands 6m, 10m, 12m, 15m, 17m and 20m bended reflector-elements are used. The support is a cross of 4 fibreglass-fishing-rods

F6EZX presents a detailed account of constructing a compact, multi-band _Levy antenna_ for portable holiday operations, specifically addressing issues with local QRM from a previous _Deltaloop_ setup. The article outlines the design criteria, including multi-band operation on 40m, 30m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m, a symmetrical configuration to reduce interference, and a low take-off angle for DX. Construction involves 2x 10.3m radiating elements and a 15.3m open-wire feeder (ladder line) with 7cm spacing, made from 1.5mm2 copper wire and foam pipe insulation spacers. Theoretical calculations, referencing F9HJ's "_Les antennes Levy_" book, guide the determination of element lengths and feeder impedance characteristics, aiming for a good match across bands with a commercial antenna tuner. Initial field tests with the _VCI Vectronics VC300DLP_ tuner showed a 1:1 SWR from 80m to 10m, with some difficulty on 17m. The antenna, mounted as a 45-degree slopper with the high point at 12m, successfully facilitated DX contacts to South America, particularly Chile and Argentina, suggesting a lower take-off angle compared to the previous Deltaloop which favored Brazil. The Levy antenna significantly reduced TVI/RFI, attributed to its improved symmetry and greater distance from the QRA. While signal reports on 15m and 20m were 1-2 S-points lower than the Deltaloop, its performance on 40m and 30m was comparable, fulfilling the design goals for a portable, low-cost, multi-band solution.

A rotary trapped-dipole for 17 and 20 meters, as described by IZ7ATH, presents a practical solution for multi-band HF operation. The author, Talino, recounts his experience building this antenna for IK7ZCQ, detailing the evolution from an initial concept involving a grounded-driven element and gamma-match to a direct-fed, non-grounded design. His pragmatic approach, adapting available materials, is evident throughout the construction narrative, particularly with the use of eight tapered aluminum pipes for the driven element. Construction specifics include precise measurements for the aluminum tubing, with diameters ranging from 30 mm down to 16 mm, and a critical note on reducing tip thickness for weight optimization. The _traps_, initially a concern, are fabricated using 8 turns of RG58 coax on a 27 mm support, tuned to resonate at 18.1 MHz using a dip-meter. Talino emphasizes sealing the traps with RF glue and PVC tape to prevent water ingress, a crucial step for longevity. Field test results, conducted on a 10-meter pole in a clear garden environment, showed an SWR of 1.2:1 on 17 meters and 1.5:1 at 14.200 MHz. While SWR varied slightly when installed at Mario's QTH due to nearby objects, the antenna's performance remained commendable. The final half-dipole length is 46 cm for the 18 MHz tips, and the total weight is under 6 kg, with potential for further reduction.

JJ0DRC's HF multi-band delta loop antenna project, initially conceived during the waning peak of Cycle 23, addresses the common challenge of achieving effective DX operation from a small residential lot in Japan. Dissatisfied with a ground plane antenna's performance in SSB pile-ups, the author sought a beam-like solution without a tower, drawing inspiration from a JJ1VKL article in CQ Ham Radio Sep. 2000. The antenna, constructed in October 2000, employs two 7.2-meter fishing rods (37% carbon fiber, reinforced with cyano-acrylate glue and aluminum tape) and 1mm enameled wire, fed by an Icom AH-4 external antenna tuner. While the exact beam pattern remains unmeasured, JJ0DRC observed a significantly higher callback rate compared to dipole antennas, particularly on higher bands. The system's circumference length of 15-20m is crucial for maintaining a good beam pattern across HF bands, though performance on lower bands like 80m, 40m, and 30m becomes less directional as the length deviates from a full wavelength. Ongoing maintenance addressed degradation issues, including aluminum tape cracking and wire breakage at connection points due to strong winds (often exceeding 10-15m/s in winter). The author reinforced rod connections with IRECTOR PIPE SYSTEM components and INSU-ROCK ties, and improved wire attachment methods using Cremona rope and epoxy bond to enhance durability.

This resource details the computer-optimized design of the _ZS6BKW_ multiband dipole, an evolution of the classic _G5RV_ antenna. It begins by referencing the original 1958 RSGB Bulletin article by Louis Varney G5RV, explaining the operational principles of the G5RV's flat-top and open-wire feedline on 20m and 40m, noting its impedance transformation characteristics for valve amplifiers of that era. The article then transitions to the rationale for optimizing the design for contemporary solid-state transceivers requiring a 50 Ohm match. The core of the project involves using computer modeling to determine optimal lengths for the flat-top and matching section, aiming for a VSWR of less than 2:1 on multiple HF bands. It discusses the process of calculating feedpoint impedance based on antenna length and frequency, referencing professional literature from Professor R.W.P. King at Harvard University. The analysis also considers the characteristic impedance (Z(O)) of the open-wire line, identifying a broad peak of adequate values between 275 and 400 Ohms. Specific design parameters for the improved ZS6BKW are presented, including a shorter flat-top and a longer matching section compared to the original G5RV, with a velocity factor of 0.85 for the 300 Ohm tape. The article confirms acceptable matches on 7, 14, 18, 24, and 28 MHz bands when erected horizontally at 13m, and also discusses performance in an inverted-V configuration, noting frequency shifts. The author, Brian Austin ZS6BKW, emphasizes the antenna's suitability for modern 50 Ohm coaxial cable without a balun.

Demonstrates the construction of a base-loaded quarter-wave vertical whip antenna, suitable for both mobile and portable HF operations. This design utilizes a vehicle body as a ground plane for mobile use or a counterpoise for field deployment. The article details the selection of materials, such as a _glass fibre tubing_ former and 24 s.w.g enamelled copper wire for the loading coil, with specific turn counts suggested for 20m (around **30 turns**) and 40m (around **50-60 turns**). It outlines a practical tuning method using an SWR bridge and even an audible signal approach, emphasizing careful adjustment of coil turn spacing or whip length to achieve optimal SWR. The resource also mentions the use of an antenna analyzer for more precise tuning, contrasting it with the SWR method.

20m 2-element light-weight Yagi antenna

The ZS6BKW wire antenna, a variant of the G5RV, utilizes a specific 13m (42.6 ft) length of 450-ohm window line as its matching section, feeding a 28.5m (93.5 ft) flat-top element. This design aims for lower SWR on 40m, 20m, 17m, 12m, and 10m compared to a standard G5RV, often achieving SWR values below 1.5:1 on these bands without an antenna tuner. The feedpoint impedance transformation provided by the window line allows for direct connection to 50-ohm coax on multiple bands. F4FHH's experience involved constructing the ZS6BKW and evaluating its performance against an _OCF dipole_ (Off-Center Fed) on various HF frequencies. The article includes observations on SWR readings and operational effectiveness, highlighting the ZS6BKW's suitability for multi-band operation. The antenna's overall length, including the flat-top and window line, is approximately **41.5 meters** (136 feet), making it a significant wire antenna for fixed station use. Comparative analysis with the OCF dipole provided practical insights into the ZS6BKW's advantages and limitations, particularly concerning bandwidth and tuner requirements.

A 20-meter Moxon antenna design provides a compact directional solution for the 14 MHz band, achieving approximately **5.5 dBi** of forward gain and a front-to-back ratio exceeding 20 dB. This rectangular wire array, consisting of a driven element and a reflector, offers a smaller footprint than a traditional 2-element Yagi, making it suitable for space-constrained installations. Construction details focus on specific dimensions for the wire elements, fed with 50-ohm coaxial cable. The _Moxon rectangle_ inherently delivers wide bandwidth and a clean radiation pattern, simplifying tuning with a relatively low SWR across the entire 20-meter band. Its robust performance makes it a practical choice for both fixed stations with limited tower space and portable _DXing_ operations. The design's characteristics are particularly beneficial for contesting and long-haul communications on 20 meters.
