The G5RV antenna, with an overall length of **31.10m (102ft)**, functions as a 3/2-wave on 20 meters when installed horizontally at 12m (39ft), exhibiting a resonant frequency of 14.150MHz and an approximate resistance of 80 ohms. Its 10.36m (34ft) stub line, designed as a 1/2-wave on 14.150MHz with a 0.97 velocity coefficient, acts as an impedance transformer across other bands, aiming for multiband operation without traps. On 20m and higher frequencies, the G5RV demonstrates improved gain compared to a standard dipole, attributed to the _collinear effect_ from multiple 1/2-waves along the wire. The original design sought a multiband solution for limited spaces, often requiring an Antenna Tuning Unit (ATU) for effective operation across bands like 80, 40, 30, and 20m, particularly with modern solid-state PAs. Variants, such as the F8CI modification, incorporate a 1/4 current balun at the stub line's base for symmetrical-to-asymmetrical transition, known as a _remote balun_. Proper flat-top or inverted-V installation is critical for maintaining symmetry and collinear gain, with inverted-V apex angles below 120° progressively diminishing higher-band performance.

Sixty-four years of operating experience inform Glynn E. "Buck" Rogers Sr., K4ABT's, insights into the J-Pole antenna, which he describes as a direct descendant of the _Windom_ or _ZEPP_. His first article on the J-Pole appeared in HRC magazine in 1958, and he has since published numerous pieces in publications like CQ Magazine, consistently referring to the J-Pole as a Windom with a folded-back short section forming the parasitic element. He emphasizes that both the Windom and J-Pole are powerful multi-band antennas, performing exceptionally well at harmonics of their fundamental design frequency, and advocates for 50-ohm coaxial cable with a _BALUN_ at the feed-point to avoid RF energy losses. K4ABT details the J-Pole's features, noting its ease of erection, lack of radials, low angle radiation, greater bandwidth, and immunity to terrestrial noise. He highlights its suitability for local nets and distant repeaters, claiming more gain and durability than most ground planes, and its ability to meet stealth antenna requirements. The guide provides specific dimensions for 2-meter (145.000 to 146.000 MHz) and 6-meter (50.500 to 51.500 MHz) J-Pole antennas, including measurements for the long driven element, short tuning stub, and spacing. The construction section illustrates a modified feed technique using an SO-239 chassis-mount coax connector soldered into a copper tee, deviating from the usual hose clamp method. The author also discusses the use of _EMT_ (electrical metallic thin-wall conduit) as an alternative to copper in earlier days. He cautions against building a 75-meter J-Pole due to its impractical length, reinforcing the antenna's optimal application for VHF and UHF bands.

A 9 dB gain 70cm collinear antenna construction is detailed, utilizing eight half-wavelength sections of _RG58/U_ coaxial cable. The design incorporates specific calculations for velocity factor (0.66 for RG58/U) to determine precise element lengths, such as 223mm for a half-wavelength at 444 MHz. A quarter-wave radiating element of #16 solid wire, 169mm long, is added to the top, and a 160mm aluminum tube acts as a quarter-wave counterpoise at the feed point. RF choke baluns, constructed from three _FT50-43_ toroids, are positioned a half-wavelength from the feed point to mitigate common mode current. Assembly involves soldering the coax sections in series, followed by SWR testing during construction and final mounting within a ¾-inch PVC pipe. The article suggests using four half-wave elements for a shorter antenna, noting a potential slight increase in SWR, which can be mitigated with quarter-wave ground radials. The design principles and formulas are scalable for other VHF/UHF bands like 6m, 2m, or 1¼m, providing a versatile homebrew solution for enhanced gain.

Optimizing the impedance transformation and common-mode current suppression in antenna systems often involves selecting an appropriate balun. This project presents a **hybrid balun** design, combining characteristics of both voltage and current baluns to achieve superior performance, particularly when used with an antenna tuner. The design addresses issues like **common-mode current** on the feedline, which can distort the antenna's radiation pattern and introduce RFI in the shack. The construction details include winding techniques for the toroid core, component selection, and practical considerations for integration into an existing antenna system. Performance comparisons are drawn against conventional balun types, highlighting the hybrid balun's effectiveness across the HF bands. The resource provides insights into the current distribution and impedance matching properties, crucial for efficient power transfer and reduced SWR.

Presents a practical design for a **crossed-dipole turnstile antenna** specifically engineered for 2-meter Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) events. The author, WB6RDV, details a robust, omnidirectional, horizontally-polarized antenna, addressing the international ARDF rules requiring such characteristics at a height of two to three meters above ground. This contrasts with the vertical polarization often used in Southern California, highlighting the design's adherence to specific event requirements. The electrical design employs a classic crossed-dipole with a 75-ohm phasing section, resulting in a slight impedance mismatch and an SWR of approximately 1.3:1 with a 50-ohm feedline. Construction utilizes readily available and inexpensive PVC plumbing components and 1/8-inch bronze welding rod for elements. The guide provides step-by-step instructions for mechanical assembly, including drilling element holes at precise 90-degree spacing and preparing the RG-179 matching section. WB6RDV shares insights from his own build experience, discussing the use of plated brass versus aluminum spacers for element attachment and the effectiveness of crimping as an alternative to soldering. The document also covers final assembly, including the integration of ferrite beads as a choke balun and options for weatherproofing and alternative mounting configurations, emphasizing the adaptability of the design for other VHF bands through scaling.

The G3TPW CobWebb antenna design provides a compact, horizontally polarized, omni-directional solution for 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m bands. This antenna utilizes five full-size half-wave dipoles, each bent into a square configuration to achieve omni-directional radiation without the nulls typically found in straight dipoles. The design incorporates a single 50-ohm coaxial feedline with an integrated air-core choke balun, minimizing feeder radiation and reducing EMC issues. Construction details include using PVC-covered multi-stranded copper twin cable for elements, supported by a fiberglass cross. The document specifies tapping points for impedance matching to 50 ohms on all five bands, ensuring high radiation efficiency without lossy traps or loading coils. Physical dimensions are compact, with 2.6-meter (8.5 feet) sides and a total weight of 6 kg (14 lbs), making it suitable for mounting on a 20-foot aluminum scaffold pole. Detailed instructions for assembling the junction box, including terminal strip wiring and the coaxial choke balun, are provided with photographs and diagrams. The design emphasizes a confined electric field to reduce coupling to nearby conductors, which helps mitigate TVI and makes the antenna less sensitive to mounting height or ground conductivity.

This drawing shows a simple 10 meter wire J-pole antenna designed for 28.4 MHz. It is a vertical, end-fed Zepp-style antenna made from common materials and intended for easy home construction. The main radiating element is a straight length of stranded copper wire, either 14 or 18 gauge, cut to about 16.5 feet. At the top, the wire is supported by an insulator, allowing the antenna to be hoisted vertically. The matching section is made from 450-ohm ladder line, approximately 7 feet 9.5 inches long, and shorted at the bottom. This matching stub transforms the impedance so the antenna can be fed with coaxial cable. The feed point is tapped about 6 inches above the bottom of the stub, with the shield and center conductor connected at the proper points. A choke balun is formed with five turns of RG-58 coax in a 4-inch diameter loop to help reduce unwanted RF on the feed line. The drawing notes that this antenna has about 0 dBd gain, similar to a dipole, but offers an omnidirectional pattern and low-angle radiation when installed high. Its main advantage is practical performance, simple construction, and effective coverage for 10 meter operation.

The KD6WD Moxon Antenna Project details the construction of 50-ohm two-element wire beam antennas, specifically Moxon rectangles, for the 10, 15, 17, and 20-meter bands. It utilizes AC6LA's software for critical measurement calculations (A-E) based on center frequency and wire size. Construction involves 16-gauge silver-coated copper wire, 16-foot telescoping fiberglass crappie fishing poles as spreaders in an "X" configuration, and various hub designs including aluminum tubing or PVC joints. A 1:1 current balun is used at the feedpoint, with wire nuts for connections, often achieving a 1:1 SWR across the design band. The project highlights practical applications, such as running a kilowatt into the antennas for greyline DX contacts, consistently yielding excellent signal reports. Comparisons to quad loops show 4 to 5 S-unit improvements in both receive and transmit. The Moxon design, according to L.B. Cebik's analysis, offers superior forward gain and front-to-back ratio among wire beams. The author notes a "DX-Vane" effect where a freely suspended Moxon automatically points to the strongest DX signal. Attempts at dual-band operation (17/20 meters) with a single feed were unsuccessful, reinforcing the Moxon's monoband nature, with EZNEC plots provided for a 17-meter Moxon at 30 feet.

One common challenge in antenna systems is mitigating common-mode current on the feedline, which can distort radiation patterns and introduce RF in the shack. This project details a 1:1 balun design that ingeniously avoids traditional ferrite beads, often a costly component, by substituting them with steel wool. The steel wool, when integrated into the balun's construction, effectively attenuates unwanted RF on the outer braid of the coaxial cable, ensuring that the antenna radiates efficiently and as intended. The construction involves winding coaxial cable through a PVC former, with the steel wool strategically placed to provide the necessary common-mode impedance. This method offers a practical and economical alternative for hams looking to build effective baluns without the expense or availability issues associated with ferrite cores. The design principles focus on creating a balanced feed to the antenna, crucial for optimal performance of dipoles and other balanced radiators. Experimentation with such designs can lead to improved field results, particularly for those operating with limited budgets or seeking innovative solutions for their antenna systems. The simplicity of using readily available materials like steel wool makes this a compelling build for many radio amateurs.

W1ZY's 40-meter **Moxon** antenna project details nine months of experimentation, culminating in a reversible array built from No. 12 insulated wire. The design incorporates two RF current baluns and a unique two-wire element construction, where each element consists of two parallel wires spaced 3 inches apart. The resource provides specific dimensions for the first prototype, including A=50.98', B=7.87', C=1.25', D=9.3', and E=18.42', optimized for 7.050 MHz CW operation. It thoroughly explains the construction of custom two-wire insulators from Plexiglas semi-rods and the critical pre-tensioning process required to maintain wire separation and array integrity. The author, Bill, emphasizes the antenna's exceptional receive performance, noting a 30-35 dB front-to-back ratio, which allows for significant signal rejection from the rear. While the Moxon offers 5-6 dB gain on transmit, its primary advantage lies in its ability to radically reduce rear-facing signals on receive, a characteristic Bill believes is often overlooked in transmit-focused comparisons. The guide details a flexible tuning method using removable tail-end jumpers, enabling adjustments to both tail-end and parallel dimensions without re-soldering the feed point, a technique refined over three prototypes.

The design of Ruthroff broadband voltage transformers

The QRP choke balun described utilizes a high permeability ferrite rod and RG-174 coax, aiming to present high impedance to common-mode currents across the HF spectrum. The construction involves winding as many turns of RG-174 as possible around the ferrite rod, then encapsulating the assembly with hot glue. This design prioritizes maximizing inductance to suppress unwanted shield currents, particularly in unbalanced antenna configurations. While the balun's effectiveness is subjectively reported as good, a potential design consideration involves the dielectric properties of the hot glue. This material could increase turn-to-turn capacitance, potentially reducing the balun's performance at higher HF frequencies, though this specific aspect has not been formally tested by the author, _AA5TB_. The project serves as an illustrative example of a practical, junk-box construction rather than a rigorously engineered solution. Photographs detail the evolution of the balun, from the initial winding process to its integration within a _B&W dipole center insulator_ and final camouflaged assembly.

A 90-foot vertical antenna constructed from **aluminum irrigation tubing** is detailed, focusing on its innovative raising and lowering mechanism. The antenna consists of two 30-foot sections of 4-inch tubing and one 30-foot section of 2-inch tubing, stacked with the smaller diameter at the top. The electrical design incorporates PVC "condulet" boxes at the 30-foot and 60-foot points, housing relays to change the effective height for multi-band operation on 160, 80, 40, and 30 meters. Ferrite rod inductive chokes are used for DC control and to tune out gap capacitance. The antenna is fed with 1000 feet of open wire line, connected to a matching transformer comprising stacked toroids and a coaxial/toroidal balun. Grounding is achieved with a 3x3 foot grid of 16-gauge tinned copper wires with soldered crossovers.

The article concludes with a sample NOAA 12 image from September 1998, demonstrating the antenna's reception capabilities.

Presents the mechanical and electrical specifications for a 5-element Yagi beam antenna designed for the 6-meter band. The resource details element lengths, spacing, and boom dimensions, specifically utilizing _EMT conduit_ for construction. It includes a diagram illustrating the element layout, a coaxial balun connection, and a reported SWR curve, providing a practical blueprint for hams to replicate the design. The design achieves a reported SWR of **1.1:1** at 50.125 MHz, indicating efficient impedance matching across the primary 6-meter DX window. The boom length is specified at 2.44 meters (8 feet), with element lengths ranging from 2.87 meters for the reflector to 2.59 meters for the director 3. This configuration suggests a gain figure typical for a 5-element Yagi, likely in the range of **9-10 dBi**, making it suitable for local and sporadic-E DX contacts.

A GSM1800 Moxon Square antenna project is presented, detailing its construction using three 1.5mm copper wire pieces for the reflector and dipole elements. The design inherently offers a 50-ohm feedpoint impedance, allowing direct connection to 50-ohm coax without complex matching networks like baluns or gamma matches, which are prone to high attenuation at 1.8 GHz if not precisely built. The resource includes a construction plan, expected **SWR plots**, and **radiation patterns** for the GSM 1800 band, specifically covering the 1710-1785 MHz transmit (red zone) and 1805-1880 MHz receive (blue zone) segments. The SWR remains below 2:1 across the entire GSM 1800 band, with the main lobe consistently achieving 5-6 dBi gain. While the radiation pattern shows some changes across the band, these primarily affect the back of the antenna, maintaining consistent forward gain. Practical considerations for high-frequency operation are emphasized, such as minimizing coax length (e.g., under 1 meter for RG-174) and selecting appropriate connectors like N, SMA, or BNC to mitigate significant attenuation. The article also discusses direct connection to the phone's RF PCB for minimal loss and notes observed signal strength variations with antenna orientation despite crossed polarization at cell sites.

A Moxon rectangle antenna design for the 11-meter band is presented, offering a compact and lightweight solution for directional HF DX operation. Construction can utilize materials like bamboo, squid poles with wire elements, or aluminum tubing on a central boom. The article includes a plan view diagram with specific dimensions (A-E) in centimeters and inches for building the antenna, such as a 392.09 cm (154 3/8 inch) driven element. The Moxon configuration inherently presents a 50 Ohm load to the transceiver, often eliminating the need for an external matching unit or balun. Performance data for an antenna mounted at approximately 30 feet indicates a gain of 10-11 dBi and a frequency range of 27.300 MHz to 28.300 MHz. The design is noted for its excellent front-to-back rejection, with tested signal drop-offs from S5-S7 to S2 when turned, demonstrating effective suppression of unwanted signals.

The ZS6BKW antenna, a popular multiband wire antenna, offers improved band matching compared to the traditional G5RV. This construction guide details the process, beginning with specific dimensions: 13.11 meters (43 feet) for the 450-ohm ladder line and initial dipole arm lengths of approximately 14.8 meters each. It emphasizes the critical role of an _antenna analyzer_ for accurate tuning, particularly for determining the velocity factor of the ladder line and achieving a 1:1 impedance match. The article outlines the materials required, including a 1:1 current balun, 450-ohm window line, wire for the dipole arms, and a 50-ohm non-inductive resistor for testing. It provides a step-by-step procedure for cutting the ladder line to its electrical half-wavelength, explaining how to calculate the velocity factor using measured and free-space frequencies. For instance, a measured 50-ohm impedance at 12.54 MHz with a calculated free-space half-wavelength frequency of 11.44 MHz yields a velocity factor of 0.91. Final adjustments involve hoisting the antenna to its operational height and fine-tuning the dipole arm lengths to achieve optimal SWR, specifically targeting 14.200 MHz. The _ZS6BKW_ design is noted for its performance on 80m, 40m, 20m, 10m, and 6m, though it is not optimized for 15m operation. The author, _VK4MDX_, shares practical tips for durable construction using stainless steel wire and cable clamps.

Optimizing a G5RV or ZS6BKW multiband wire antenna for HF operation often involves addressing common SWR issues and understanding feedline characteristics. This resource chronicles the construction and performance evaluation of a G5RV, initially built for 80m, 40m, 15m, and 10m bands, by a newly licensed Foundation operator. The author details the selection of materials, including 3.5 mm stainless steel wire for the doublet arms and enameled copper wire for the open-wire feeder, and the initial decision to omit a balun based on common online information. The narrative highlights the initial disappointing performance, characterized by high receive noise and poor signal reports on 80 meters, despite the transceiver's internal ATU achieving a 1:1 match. This led to experimentation with a coax current balun and further research into G5RV myths, such as SWR claims and the necessity of a balun. The author then describes modifying the antenna to the ZS6BKW configuration, which involves specific changes to the doublet and feedline lengths, and integrating a 1:1 current balun wound on a ferrite toroid.
