Sixty-four years of operating experience inform Glynn E. "Buck" Rogers Sr., K4ABT's, insights into the J-Pole antenna, which he describes as a direct descendant of the _Windom_ or _ZEPP_. His first article on the J-Pole appeared in HRC magazine in 1958, and he has since published numerous pieces in publications like CQ Magazine, consistently referring to the J-Pole as a Windom with a folded-back short section forming the parasitic element. He emphasizes that both the Windom and J-Pole are powerful multi-band antennas, performing exceptionally well at harmonics of their fundamental design frequency, and advocates for 50-ohm coaxial cable with a _BALUN_ at the feed-point to avoid RF energy losses. K4ABT details the J-Pole's features, noting its ease of erection, lack of radials, low angle radiation, greater bandwidth, and immunity to terrestrial noise. He highlights its suitability for local nets and distant repeaters, claiming more gain and durability than most ground planes, and its ability to meet stealth antenna requirements. The guide provides specific dimensions for 2-meter (145.000 to 146.000 MHz) and 6-meter (50.500 to 51.500 MHz) J-Pole antennas, including measurements for the long driven element, short tuning stub, and spacing. The construction section illustrates a modified feed technique using an SO-239 chassis-mount coax connector soldered into a copper tee, deviating from the usual hose clamp method. The author also discusses the use of _EMT_ (electrical metallic thin-wall conduit) as an alternative to copper in earlier days. He cautions against building a 75-meter J-Pole due to its impractical length, reinforcing the antenna's optimal application for VHF and UHF bands.

3 elements VHF Yagi homebrew antenna designed with YAGIMAX 3. Maximum forward GAIN is about 8,17 DBi. This antenna offering an effective radiation power 4 times greater of the transceiver output by SV1BSX

Presents the KE4UYP linear-loaded vertical antenna design, which introduces very little loss on 80 or 160 meters, achieving an overall radiation efficiency of 80% to 85%. This design addresses common pitfalls of traditional base-fed verticals by placing the majority of the current at the top of the antenna, eliminating the heavy reliance on extensive ground radial systems. The author's initial 10-meter model, only three feet tall, yielded 5/9 signal reports to Anchorage, AK, and Europe, confirming its effectiveness. The antenna incorporates both vertically and horizontally polarized radiators, with a 1/4 wavelength horizontal counterpoise located at the feed-point, near the top, to create an almost totally omnidirectional pattern with high wave angle horizontally polarized radiation. This dual polarization ensures even illumination across all take-off angles, making it effective for both local contacts and **DXing**. The vertical element is linear loaded, adding capacitance reactance and making it longer than the horizontal element to achieve resonance and raise the feed-point impedance to 50 ohms. Fine-tuning the antenna requires careful adjustment, as tower reactance can vary. The article suggests starting with 80 feet for 80m and 170 feet for 160m for the vertical wire, then trimming for resonance. Bandwidth specifications include 300 kHz under 2:1 **SWR** on 80m and 100 kHz on 160m when suspended between trees, or 150 kHz on 80m when side-mounted on a tower.

This drawing shows a simple 10 meter wire J-pole antenna designed for 28.4 MHz. It is a vertical, end-fed Zepp-style antenna made from common materials and intended for easy home construction. The main radiating element is a straight length of stranded copper wire, either 14 or 18 gauge, cut to about 16.5 feet. At the top, the wire is supported by an insulator, allowing the antenna to be hoisted vertically. The matching section is made from 450-ohm ladder line, approximately 7 feet 9.5 inches long, and shorted at the bottom. This matching stub transforms the impedance so the antenna can be fed with coaxial cable. The feed point is tapped about 6 inches above the bottom of the stub, with the shield and center conductor connected at the proper points. A choke balun is formed with five turns of RG-58 coax in a 4-inch diameter loop to help reduce unwanted RF on the feed line. The drawing notes that this antenna has about 0 dBd gain, similar to a dipole, but offers an omnidirectional pattern and low-angle radiation when installed high. Its main advantage is practical performance, simple construction, and effective coverage for 10 meter operation.

This project details three variants of a vertical half-wave antenna design for the 4-meter (70MHz) amateur radio band. The antennas use end-feeding with a parallel-tuned circuit for impedance matching to 50-ohm coaxial cable. The first variant uses suspended flexible wire for portable use, the second employs a fiberglass rod with internal wire for permanent outdoor installation, and the third utilizes aluminum tent poles for quick mobile deployment. Despite the narrow bandwidth of the matching circuit, this suits the narrow 4m FM allocation well. The design offers an effective omnidirectional radiation pattern and can be constructed with readily available materials.

WB2VUO presents a practical examination of effective HF mobile antennas, focusing on the inherent efficiency challenges encountered on the lower bands, specifically 160, 80, and 40 Meters. The resource delves into the necessity of loading coils for mobile operation below 21 MHz, where full-sized antennas are impractical. It contrasts base-loaded and center-loaded designs, noting that base-loaded antennas are simpler for the average ham to construct but offer lower efficiency compared to center-loaded configurations. The author provides specific data for an 8-foot whip, detailing its electrical length and _radiation resistance_ across various HF bands, from **0.08 ohms** on 160 Meters to **16.1 ohms** on 12 Meters. This data highlights the extremely low radiation resistance on lower frequencies, which significantly impacts feedpoint impedance due to ground and feedline losses. The discussion includes practical considerations for feedpoint impedance, noting that a typical 8-foot whip on 10 Meters might present 30-45 ohms, allowing for acceptable SWR without an ATU. Construction sketches illustrate both base-loaded and center-loaded mobile antennas, with advice on material selection like galvanized steel for rugged bottom sections. The article also includes coil value charts from the _ARRL Mobile Manual_ for both base and center loading, emphasizing the importance of using large diameter wire to minimize losses and suggesting capacity hats to reduce coil inductance and improve performance on 160-40 Meters.

Antenna Gain Explained delves into the fundamental principles behind antenna gain, a concept that often perplexes even seasoned RF engineers. The author, Marc, clarifies that antennas do not generate power but rather focus existing RF energy into desired directions, effectively reshaping the radiation pattern. He defines key terms such as _decibel (dB)_, _Antenna Gain_, and _Radiation Pattern_, emphasizing the distinction between dBD (referenced to a ½-wavelength dipole) and dBi (referenced to an imaginary isotropic antenna), noting that dBi figures are 2.14dB higher. The discussion illustrates how a standard ½-wavelength dipole's "doughnut" radiation pattern can be flattened into a "pancake" to achieve gains of 3dB, 6dB, or even 9dB by concentrating energy horizontally. Marc also explains how reflectors and directors are employed in directional antennas to further intensify radiation in a specific direction, potentially achieving gains as high as 20dB, albeit with a narrower effective angle. The concept of _Front-Back Ratio_ is introduced for directional antennas, detailing how some energy inevitably radiates to the rear due to diffraction, even with solid reflectors.

One common challenge in antenna systems is mitigating common-mode current on the feedline, which can distort radiation patterns and introduce RF in the shack. This project details a 1:1 balun design that ingeniously avoids traditional ferrite beads, often a costly component, by substituting them with steel wool. The steel wool, when integrated into the balun's construction, effectively attenuates unwanted RF on the outer braid of the coaxial cable, ensuring that the antenna radiates efficiently and as intended. The construction involves winding coaxial cable through a PVC former, with the steel wool strategically placed to provide the necessary common-mode impedance. This method offers a practical and economical alternative for hams looking to build effective baluns without the expense or availability issues associated with ferrite cores. The design principles focus on creating a balanced feed to the antenna, crucial for optimal performance of dipoles and other balanced radiators. Experimentation with such designs can lead to improved field results, particularly for those operating with limited budgets or seeking innovative solutions for their antenna systems. The simplicity of using readily available materials like steel wool makes this a compelling build for many radio amateurs.

A 10-meter J-Pole antenna, detailed in QST February 1950, offers a straightforward solution for hams operating with restricted space. This design, originally presented by W1BLR, is a **half-wave radiator** fed by a quarter-wave matching stub, providing a low-angle radiation pattern beneficial for DX. The article describes building the antenna from readily available materials like copper pipe, emphasizing its simplicity and effectiveness for **single-band operation**. The J-Pole's inherent design provides a good impedance match to 50-ohm coaxial cable without the need for an external tuner, a significant advantage for portable or minimalist stations. Its nondirectional pattern ensures coverage in all directions, making it a versatile choice for general operating on the 28 MHz band. The construction plans are clear, allowing even those with basic workshop skills to assemble a functional antenna.

A **90-foot tall** top-loaded vertical antenna for the 160-meter band is detailed, constructed from aluminum irrigation tubing. This _monoband_ vertical is optimized for low-band operation, providing a robust solution for DXing and contesting on 1.8 MHz. The document includes specific construction methods for assembling the aluminum irrigation tubing sections and securing the guy wires. While a full NEC model is not explicitly provided, the physical dimensions and construction materials are sufficient for replication by experienced builders. The antenna's height and top-loading configuration are critical for achieving efficient radiation on 160 meters, particularly in minimizing ground losses.

What is NVIS Near Vertical Incident Skywave. This article on NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave) explores its role in short-range HF communication, covering 0-200 miles. NVIS utilizes antennas with high radiation angles and frequencies below the ionospheric critical frequency to achieve reliable local contact. He details optimal antennas, like low dipoles, and practical tips for maximizing NVIS performance, emphasizing its advantages such as reduced noise and independent operation without repeaters. Examines the rationale behind L. B. Cebik, W4RNL's, consistent use of dBi for specifying antenna gain in his modeling work, contrasting it with the common practice of using dBd. The article meticulously defines decibels as relative power measurements and introduces the theoretical _isotropic radiator_ as the baseline for dBi, highlighting its utility as an unchanging constant for universal antenna comparison. It details how maximum gain in dBi allows for straightforward numerical comparisons between antennas, while also emphasizing the importance of considering other factors like horizontal beamwidth, vertical beamwidth, and elevation angle of maximum radiation for a complete performance picture. The resource then critically analyzes the concept of dBd, categorizing it into _dBd-I_ (ideal dipole), _dBd-RM_ (real modeled dipole), and _dBd-RR_ (real range dipole), exposing the ambiguities and inconsistencies inherent in these varied definitions. W4RNL argues that the lack of standardized protocols for dBd measurements, particularly in real-world test ranges, makes direct comparisons problematic without extensive supplementary data on test conditions and comparison antennas. He illustrates how these complexities often obscure rather than clarify antenna performance. Ultimately, the article advocates for dBi as the more robust and unambiguous standard for antenna modelers, especially when comparing diverse antenna types where a dipole is not a relevant benchmark. It acknowledges that range testers may continue to use dBd-RR due to practical limitations, but stresses the critical need for detailed test protocols to ensure meaningful results. The discussion underscores the ongoing challenge of correlating real-world antenna measurements with theoretical modeling.

This antenna project came out very nice. It's a rugged homebrew multi-band trap vertical antenna that works the 10, 15, and 20 meter amateur radio bands. The antenna can be mounted on the ground or on a mast. Mounted on the ground the antenna has a low take off angle for working DX. If mounted on a mast the antenna will acheive both a low angle as well as another radiation lobe that has a much higher take off angle.

A 40-meter reversible _Moxon rectangle_ antenna project details its construction and performance, featuring 51-foot long sides and 7.7-foot turned-in sections. The design incorporates a 16.5-foot boom, with elements spaced 1.1 feet apart, constructed from #14 covered wire. It utilizes two double-pole relays for switching between NE and SW directions, achieving F/B ratios up to 40 dB on CW and 30 dB on SSB, with distinct reflector stub settings for each mode. This antenna replaced a full-size 2-element Yagi, demonstrating comparable forward gain while offering superior F/B ratios and directional flexibility. _EZNEC_ modeling indicates only 0.2 dB less forward gain than the Yagi. The system uses no baluns, relying on half-wave feedlines and switched stubs for impedance matching. The antenna is tree-supported at 45 feet, with its effective radiation height modeled at 80 feet due to local terrain, enhancing its performance over a nearby lake.

It specifies the use of a _T200-2_ ferrite core for the transformer, outlining the 13-turn secondary and 2-turn primary winding process with enamelled copper wire. The document also describes the integration of a coax capacitor, whose length is critical for tuning and varies by band, with specific starting lengths provided for 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m operation. The practical application section guides the builder through tuning the antenna using an antenna analyzer, emphasizing the iterative process of spacing secondary windings and trimming the coax capacitor to achieve resonance at the desired band frequency. It highlights the antenna's low angle of radiation, beneficial for DX, and claims up to 2 S-points improvement over a _G5RV_ or similar doublet when used as an omnidirectional vertical. A comprehensive shopping list, including specific part numbers from _Rapid Electronics_, is provided, along with advice on selecting fiberglass fishing poles for support and suitable antenna wire.

A 3.42-meter (11-foot 2-inch) extended-length mobile antenna project is presented, detailing its evolution from an initial 1.65-meter design. W5JGV shares his journey in optimizing mobile HF performance, noting that increasing the top whip length significantly improved radiation efficiency by reducing coil losses and allowing for larger wire gauges. The article includes a comparative table illustrating substantial gain increases, with the 3.42-meter version showing up to 40.6% efficiency on 21.2 MHz compared to a half-wave dipole. Construction details are thoroughly documented, from the use of hard-wall copper pipe for mast sections to the fabrication of custom loading coils. The author explains the necessity of an insulating brace for self-supporting coils and details a unique rotational alignment mechanism for off-center mounted coils to prevent snagging on overhead obstructions. He also describes a "Z" winding technique for 75-meter and 160-meter coils, which minimizes copper losses and manages dielectric losses. The resource provides specific loading coil data, including wire gauge, number of turns, coil length, and inductance values for bands from 18 MHz down to 2 MHz. It emphasizes that these coils may require fine-tuning based on individual vehicle and whip configurations, suggesting an antenna tuner for optimal mobile station operation across multiple HF bands.

End-Fed Half-Wave Antennas (EFHWAs) are analyzed for their utility in portable QRP operations, emphasizing their simplicity, efficiency, and predictable radiation patterns compared to other portable antenna types. The discussion contrasts EFHWAs with vertical antennas, random length wires, and center-fed dipoles, highlighting the common pitfalls of each, such as ground system dependency for verticals and feedline issues for dipoles. The article details the electrical half-wavelength calculation using the formula L (Ft) = 468/F(MHz) and explains how EFHWAs can be resonant on harmonic frequencies, enabling multiband operation. Various deployment configurations are presented, including the inverted L, inverted Vee, sloping wire, and vertical setups, each with specific advantages for radiation angle and polarization. For instance, a vertical EFHWA offers a low angle of radiation suitable for DX contacts without requiring an extensive ground system. The resource also addresses the counterpoise requirements, suggesting a quarter-wavelength wire or connection to a metallic structure for decoupling. A schematic diagram for a simple parallel-tuned circuit tuner, based on the _Rainbow Bridge/Tuner_ design, is provided, detailing component values for 30 and 40 meters, including a 6 microhenry toroidal inductor and a 20-100 picofarad mica compression capacitor. The tuner's adjustment process for SWR matching is also outlined.

Portable Vertical Antenna for 75m and 40m featuring Low radiation angle for DX, easy to install and to match 50 ohms

This PDF document, authored by KT4QW in October 2004, details the construction and modeling of a dual-band, horizontally polarized hanging rectangular loop antenna for **10 and 17 meters**. The design, adapted from *The ARRL Handbook*, utilizes _NEC4WIN95_ software for scaling and optimization, targeting a 50 ohm feedpoint impedance. The resource includes a bill of materials, step-by-step construction instructions, and a discussion of the antenna's radiation characteristics. It presents NEC-generated elevation and azimuth patterns, comparing the loop's performance to a half-wave horizontal dipole at the same height and frequency. The 17-meter element is centered at 18.140 MHz for low SWR across the phone band, while the 10-meter element is centered at 28.500 MHz. Construction involves 14-gauge stranded copper wire and Schedule 40 PVC spreaders, with the total wire length calculated by the formula: Length in feet = 1005/MHz. The feedpoint impedance can be adjusted by modifying the rectangular aspect ratio. The document specifies hoisting the antenna to at least a half-wave above ground for testing. It notes that a balun was tested and found to have no measurable effect on SWR or radiation characteristics. A 2-meter scale model is presented to illustrate the physical design, and a "rotator" string is incorporated for directional adjustment up to 90 degrees.

Simple, inexpensive and easy to erect, this antenna provides directivity, low angle radiation and a small gain on a number of HF bands.

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

A Compact size 80-10 m field day antenna offering a Low angle of radiation and very easy to build and set up

This resource presents a technical guide detailing antenna measurement theory, focusing on the fundamental electromagnetic principles governing antenna operation and characterization. It delineates the three primary spatial regions surrounding an antenna: the reactive field (0 < r < lambda/2pi), the radiating near-field (lambda/2pi < r < 2D2/lambda), and the radiating far-field (r > **2D2/lambda**). The guide defines key antenna parameters, including polarization, input impedance, VSWR, directivity, gain, efficiency, Effective Isotropically Radiated Power (EIRP), antenna noise temperature, and the G/T parameter. Radiation patterns are discussed, with examples of both rectangular and polar forms, emphasizing the determination of patterns in the far-field region for constant radial distance and frequency, typically characterized by a main beam with **3 dB** beamwidth and sidelobes. The document further elaborates on the mathematical definitions of these parameters, such as the Poynting vector (E x H*) for electromagnetic waves and the relationship between antenna gain and directivity. It also introduces related terms like mixers, which are critical components in antenna measurement instrumentation for frequency conversion (fIF = fRF +/-nfLO). The theoretical framework provided supports the scientific analysis of antenna performance, applicable to various antenna types and operational frequencies. A 20-meter Moxon antenna design provides a compact directional solution for the 14 MHz band, achieving approximately **5.5 dBi** of forward gain and a front-to-back ratio exceeding 20 dB. This rectangular wire array, consisting of a driven element and a reflector, offers a smaller footprint than a traditional 2-element Yagi, making it suitable for space-constrained installations. Construction details focus on specific dimensions for the wire elements, fed with 50-ohm coaxial cable. The _Moxon rectangle_ inherently delivers wide bandwidth and a clean radiation pattern, simplifying tuning with a relatively low SWR across the entire 20-meter band. Its robust performance makes it a practical choice for both fixed stations with limited tower space and portable _DXing_ operations. The design's characteristics are particularly beneficial for contesting and long-haul communications on 20 meters.

The resource provides an in-depth analysis of the W6NL 40m _Moxon Yagi_ antenna, utilizing a NEC-2 model to simulate its performance. It details the antenna's design parameters, including element lengths and spacing, and explores critical operational aspects such as feedpoint impedance, SWR across the 40-meter band, and radiation patterns. The document systematically presents the model's setup and the methodology for evaluating the antenna's behavior in different environments, including free space and over real ground. Performance data derived from the NEC-2 model illustrates the antenna's forward gain, front-to-back ratio, and beamwidth. For instance, the model predicts a free-space gain of approximately **6.5 dBi** and a front-to-back ratio exceeding **20 dB** at resonance. Comparisons are drawn between free-space performance and operation at various heights above average ground, demonstrating the impact of ground proximity on take-off angle and overall efficiency. The analysis also touches upon the antenna's bandwidth characteristics, indicating its suitability for the entire 40-meter band with acceptable SWR.
