The J-Pole Antenna Design Calculator, developed by K4ABT, G.E. "Buck" Rogers Sr., facilitates the rapid determination of J-Pole antenna dimensions for various amateur radio bands. Users input their desired operating frequency to generate specific measurements, enabling construction for HF, 2 meters, 220 MHz, 440 MHz, and higher frequencies. The tool supports designs using materials like aluminum or copper, offering flexibility for homebrew enthusiasts. Operational guidance includes recommendations for integrating a **choke balun** near the feedpoint to mitigate RF on the feedline, thereby improving SWR accuracy. For 2-meter operation, a suggested choke configuration involves four turns of coax with a 5-inch diameter, positioned within 3 to 4 inches of the feedpoint. Additional builder hints detail cost-effective construction methods, such as utilizing 1/2-inch EMT conduit and 1/4-inch soft copper for the 'J' section. The resource also references K4ABT's articles in CQ Magazine, specifically "The Packet Users Notebook," providing further technical context and design principles for antenna builders.

The _Morgain_ antenna for 40/80 meters is a straightforward and cost-effective wire antenna design, requiring careful tuning for optimal performance across two bands with low SWR. Construction involves creating 12 cm PVC spacers with three holes for wire insertion, along with larger terminals for anchoring and connector housing, which should be sealed with silicone. The provided measurements detail the specific lengths for the antenna elements, crucial for achieving resonance on both 40m and 80m bands. Tuning the Morgain antenna necessitates fabricating four wire segments with pins to temporarily connect and adjust the bridging points symmetrically for both 40m and 80m. This iterative process, though time-consuming, ensures the antenna functions effectively for decades once the precise connection points are soldered and protected. The design emphasizes ease of construction and long-term stability, making it a practical solution for hams seeking a dual-band wire antenna.

The resource details the construction and performance of a dual-band 40/30 meter _Moxon_ antenna, evolving from an initial single-band 30-meter design that failed in a storm. It specifies materials such as four 10-meter fishing rods, galvanized iron TV antenna support pipes, 1mm diameter PVC-covered copper wire, and a piece of 75-ohm TV satellite cable for feedline. The document outlines the iterative design process, including initial resonance measurements of 9.9 MHz for 30 meters and subsequent recalculations to shift the center frequency by 300 kHz using _Moxon software_. Initial testing on a roof yielded SWR readings of 1.4:1 at 7.200 MHz and 1.5:1 at 10.280 MHz. After installation atop a 30-meter tower, the final SWR measurements were 1.1 at 7.130 MHz and 1.4 at 10.230 MHz, with a notable 30 dB front-to-back ratio on 40 meters. The 30-meter performance, while good, showed a front-to-back ratio of approximately 15 dB, suggesting a slightly high resonance. The antenna's placement on a 700-meter hill, with a significant ground drop in certain directions, is noted as a potential factor in its excellent DX performance, enabling daily contacts with the USA West Coast on 30 and 40 meters with 100 watts.

A rotary trapped-dipole for 17 and 20 meters, as described by IZ7ATH, presents a practical solution for multi-band HF operation. The author, Talino, recounts his experience building this antenna for IK7ZCQ, detailing the evolution from an initial concept involving a grounded-driven element and gamma-match to a direct-fed, non-grounded design. His pragmatic approach, adapting available materials, is evident throughout the construction narrative, particularly with the use of eight tapered aluminum pipes for the driven element. Construction specifics include precise measurements for the aluminum tubing, with diameters ranging from 30 mm down to 16 mm, and a critical note on reducing tip thickness for weight optimization. The _traps_, initially a concern, are fabricated using 8 turns of RG58 coax on a 27 mm support, tuned to resonate at 18.1 MHz using a dip-meter. Talino emphasizes sealing the traps with RF glue and PVC tape to prevent water ingress, a crucial step for longevity. Field test results, conducted on a 10-meter pole in a clear garden environment, showed an SWR of 1.2:1 on 17 meters and 1.5:1 at 14.200 MHz. While SWR varied slightly when installed at Mario's QTH due to nearby objects, the antenna's performance remained commendable. The final half-dipole length is 46 cm for the 18 MHz tips, and the total weight is under 6 kg, with potential for further reduction.

An experimental antenna, similar to the _TAK spiral antenna_, was evaluated for SWR response over the 7.0 to 7.3 MHz frequency range. The analysis presents specific results: beam length significantly affects SWR, with increased distance between spirals raising the resonant frequency; the combined length of antenna and hookup wire lowers the resonant frequency as it increases; and spiral diameter impacts bandwidth, with larger diameters yielding greater bandwidth. The design addresses the fixed beam length limitation of the commercial TAK antenna by introducing an adjustable version constructed primarily from PVC electrical conduit and water pipe, using 14-gauge aluminum wire. The resource includes a detailed mechanical design, construction steps, and a parts list. It also features a spiral antenna spreadsheet model for calculating design parameters like start point, pitch, safe edge, spoke length, and arm length, which aids in determining wire length and kerf cutting tables. Model verification involved constructing an antenna to specific parameters, with SWR tests conducted using an _MFJ Model 269_ antenna analyzer at 13 feet above ground with 60 feet of RG8 mini coax. Measurements showed that adjusting beam length from 27 to 37 inches shifted the resonant frequency by approximately 0.18 MHz. Further data compares 32-inch versus 48-inch diameter spirals, demonstrating increased bandwidth for the larger diameter. The model accurately predicted revolutions for given antenna lengths, pitch, and starting distances. The final design achieved a resonant frequency of 7.17 MHz, favoring the voice portion of the 40-meter band after adjustments.

Operating a ZS6BKW antenna often involves understanding its lineage from the _G5RV_ design, with specific modifications by ZS6BKW to optimize performance on several bands. Through computational analysis and field measurements, the antenna's dimensions were refined to allow operation on 10, 12, 17, 20, and 40 meters without an antenna tuner. For 80, 30, and 15 meters, a tuner is necessary, though efficiency on 30 and 15 meters is noted as not particularly high. The physical configuration consists of two 13.755-meter radiating elements fed by a 12.20-meter section of 450-ohm ladder line. Tuning the antenna on the 20-meter band is critical, and any deviation in the ladder line's characteristic impedance necessitates recalculating the element lengths. The design is also referenced in the 12th edition of _Rothammel's Antennenbuch_, page 219. Proper common mode current suppression is crucial at the transition from ladder line to coaxial cable. This can be achieved with a common mode choke, such as several turns of coax wound into a coil or over a ferrite toroid like an Amidon T130. While a 1:1 balun is an option, it may introduce issues.

Subsequent adjustments, including a 13 cm extension to the radiating element, improved performance, enabling operation on 6, 15, and 40 meters without a balun, and adding 12 meters with a balun. The design prioritizes portability, allowing transport in a standard vehicle and single-person deployment. Four 10.07-meter radials are connected at the base to enhance ground plane effectiveness. The article details the mechanical assembly, including custom adapters for tube transitions and a PVC sanitary tube sleeve for base insulation, ensuring robust field deployment. Final SWR measurements, documented with an _MFJ-259_ antenna analyzer, confirm operational ranges: 6.800-7.500 MHz (SWR < 1.5), 20.800-22.500 MHz (SWR < 1.5), and 48.800-51.500 MHz (SWR < 1.5) without a balun. With a balun, the antenna achieved SWR < 1.5 on 13.750-15.000 MHz and 24.890-28.350 MHz, demonstrating its versatility for portable _DXpeditions_.

Accurately determining an antenna's feedpoint impedance is crucial for optimal performance, especially when experimenting with new designs or making adjustments. While SWR meters provide basic information, a full complex impedance measurement reveals the resistive and reactive components, which are essential for proper matching. Modern antenna analyzers, like the _Palstar ZM30_ or MFJ259B, simplify this task, but measurements taken through a transmission line require careful interpretation due to impedance transformation. This resource details a calibration method to precisely account for the effects of the feedline. It explains how a transmission line can significantly alter the measured impedance, illustrating this phenomenon with a Smith Chart example where an 80m antenna's [22 + j6] Ohms feedpoint impedance transforms to [82 + j45] Ohms after a 10m line. The guide demonstrates using a transmission line calculator applet, such as the one by W9CF, to reverse this transformation. It outlines the process of calibrating a specific length of RG174 coax, showing how an initial 26ft estimate was refined to **25.85ft** to accurately predict a known 22 Ohm load, significantly improving accuracy over uncalibrated results.

Presents the construction of a 6-meter (50 MHz) Moxon wire beam antenna, detailing the use of #14 AWG THNN stranded wire and a treated wood frame. It covers the assembly of a galvanized pipe mast, emphasizing the use of pipe sleeves for joint reinforcement over threaded couplers to prevent breakage during raising and lowering operations. The resource also describes the integration of a 1:1 current balun, rated for 50-54 MHz, and the use of RG-8X coax for the transmission line, recommending low-loss alternatives like Belden 9913-7F. Further, it outlines a manual rotation mechanism using pipe hanger clamps and carriage bolts for true North orientation, incorporating magnetic declination calculations from NOAA. The antenna's performance is discussed, noting good gain and take-off angle, with SWR tuning facilitated by a Palstar AT-500 manual tuner. An EZNEC+ 5.054 model for the antenna is available for download, alongside predicted radiation patterns and SWR curves, compared with actual AIM-4170C measurements.

Optimizing the ZS6BKW antenna for full HF band coverage often requires specific modifications beyond its standard configuration. This resource details several enhancements, beginning with a simple series capacitor to improve 80m SWR, a technique W5DXP found effective for permanent installation due to its minimal impact on higher bands. Further improvements include a 10-inch parallel open stub for 10m resonance, shifting the frequency to 28.4 MHz with an SWR of approximately 1.8:1, a practical solution for Technician class operators. The document then explores a switchable matching section, adding or subtracting one foot of ladder line at the 1:1 choke-balun, which significantly impacts higher frequency bands and eliminates the need for a tuner on 17m. W5DXP's _AIM-4170D_ antenna analyzer measurements confirm these effects. More advanced modifications involve a parallel capacitor for further 80m SWR reduction, requiring remote switching for multi-band operation, and relay-switched parallel capacitors at specific points on the 450-ohm matching section to achieve low SWR on 60m, 30m, and 15m. These detailed steps, including _Smith chart_ analyses for the challenging bands, aim to transform the ZS6BKW into a truly all-HF-band antenna, reflecting W5DXP's practical experience in antenna tuning.

The ZS6BKW multiband antenna, an optimized variant of the classic G5RV, features a 102-foot (31.1 m) horizontal span and a 39.1-foot ladder line matching section. This design, derived by G0GSF (formerly ZS6BKW) in the early 1980s using computer programs and _Smith charts_, aims for improved SWR across multiple HF bands compared to its predecessor. Construction details specify Wireman 554 ladder line and #14 AWG THHN copper wire for the radiators, with precise instructions for determining the velocity factor (VF) of the ladder line using an antenna analyzer or dip meter, ensuring accurate physical length for the matching section. The radiator length is electrically 1.35 wavelengths for the 20-meter band, requiring careful trimming during tuning. Field measurements with an _AIM-4170C_ analyzer by KI4PMI and NC4FB demonstrated good SWR curves and bandwidth on 6, 10, 12, 17, 20, and 40 meters. The antenna was deemed unusable on 15 and 30 meters due to very high SWR, but an LDG AT-100PRO autotuner successfully brought 6 and 80 meters into tune. Contacts were made on 80, 40, 20, and 17 meters, including a **17-meter** contact to Spain. EZNEC models for 80-6 meters are provided, along with an AutoEZ model by AC6LA, which predicted good SWR for 80-10 meters. W5DXP's modifications for an all-band HF ZS6BKW are also referenced.

A 6 dB gain Moxon rectangle antenna, designed for the 2-meter band, offers an excellent solution for hams seeking a compact, directional antenna for **SSB** operation, particularly in restricted spaces like an attic. This design emphasizes ease of construction using readily available materials such as 4mm OD brass tubing and plywood, making it an accessible project for many radio amateurs. The antenna's inherent characteristics, including a high front-to-back ratio of 37 dB and a 50-ohm feed impedance, contribute to its effectiveness in mitigating local noise and focusing radiated power. A fractional bandwidth of up to 30:1 characterizes spiral antennas, making them highly effective across a very wide frequency range, often from 1 GHz to 30 GHz. The resource details two primary types: the **Log-Periodic Spiral Antenna** and the **Archimedean Spiral Antenna**, defining each with specific polar functions and illustrating their planar configurations. It explains that spiral antennas are typically circularly polarized, with a Half-Power Beamwidth (HPBW) of approximately 70-90 degrees, and a peak radiation direction perpendicular to the spiral plane. The content elaborates on critical design parameters affecting radiation, including the total length (outer radius) for lowest frequency, the flare rate ('a' constant) for optimal radiation versus capacitive behavior, the feed structure (often an infinite balun) for high-frequency operation, and the number of turns (typically 1.5 to 3 turns). It also discusses the theoretical impedance of 188 Ohms for Log-Periodic spirals, derived from Babinet's Principle, noting actual impedances are often 100-150 Ohms. The article presents a simple construction method for an Archimedean spiral, demonstrating VSWR and efficiency measurements. Measurements from a constructed spiral antenna show a VSWR that is fairly constant across the band, albeit with a mismatch loss of about 3 dB. The antenna efficiency remains around -5 dB (31.6%) across its operating range, indicating a decent wideband radiator despite opportunities for optimization.

The AE6AC 17-meter Moxon antenna project details the construction of a wire beam using readily available materials. This design utilizes four 16-foot fiberglass crappie poles for support, joined at the center with 3/4-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe and "T" slip fittings. Wire segment lengths for 18.135 MHz were calculated using _Moxgen_ software by AC6LA, with specific dimensions provided in feet and inches for precise cutting. The finished antenna, weighing less than 10 pounds, mounts on a fiberglass windsurfer mast and incorporates a 1:1 current mode ferrite bead balun. Performance measurements with an _MFJ-259B_ show an SWR better than 1.5:1 across the 17m band, with good front-to-back ratio and reported signal strength improvements of 2-4 S-units over vertical dipoles. Initial contacts included VK2AXB, ZF6GS, and KL1M.

Constructing a compact, single-feed triband Moxon antenna for 20, 15, and 10 meters is detailed by DU1RZ, drawing from his personal experience with space-constrained antenna projects. Initially fascinated by cubical quads, the author transitioned to Moxon designs in 2005 after realizing his roof space was insufficient for a bulky quad. His first experimental monoband Moxon for 15 meters, built from repurposed materials, provided solid DX QSOs for seven years, despite being slightly below the 21 MHz band center. The project outlines the design process, including using the _MOXGEN Calculator_ for element dimensions and material selection, such as #14 AWG enamel copper wire and fishing poles for spreaders. DU1RZ shares insights from simulations with DL2GMS regarding insulated versus non-insulated wire performance, noting that insulated wire can shift resonant frequencies lower. The assembly instructions cover preparing wire elements, connecting feed points, and tuning the antenna, with initial SWR measurements taken at 10 feet and final readings on a mast showing excellent results: 1.0:1 on 14.225 MHz, 1.1:1 on 21.250 MHz, and 1.3:1 on 28.50 MHz. Transmission tests with 4F1BYN indicated a front-to-back ratio of approximately 2 S units with 10 watts output. The author emphasizes adaptability, encouraging builders to use readily available materials rather than strictly replicating his setup. Key observations from DU1RZ and DL2GMS highlight the antenna's strong performance across 20, 15, and 10 meters, good front-to-back ratio, full bandwidth on 20 and 15 meters, and its small turning radius of about 4.18 meters (13.54 feet), making it suitable for limited antenna space. Its lightweight construction and low wind load are also noted as significant advantages.

Coaxial cable stripping for PL-259 connectors requires precise measurements to ensure optimal RF performance and mechanical integrity. For RG-8X, the outer jacket is stripped 1/2 inch, the braid 5/16 inch, and the dielectric 1/8 inch, leaving the center conductor exposed. RG-58 preparation involves a 1/2 inch jacket strip, 1/4 inch braid strip, and 1/8 inch dielectric strip. These specific dimensions facilitate proper soldering and crimping, minimizing impedance discontinuities at the connector interface. Different coaxial cable types, such as RG-8 and RG-213, necessitate varied stripping lengths due to their construction. The _PL-259_ connector, a common UHF type, relies on these exact preparations for a secure fit and low-loss connection. Incorrect stripping can lead to high SWR, RF leakage, and mechanical failure, impacting overall station efficiency. The guide details these critical dimensions for several popular coax cables. DL7JV shares his practical experience building and testing capacitive antennas, initially skeptical of their performance compared to magnetic loops and mono-band dipoles. His interest was piqued after hearing a Spanish station running 100 Watts on 80 meters with a 1-meter Micro Vert, making DX contacts into PY and UA0, despite the antenna being only 4 meters high in a garden. This prompted DL7JV to investigate further, consulting resources from DL7PE and DL7AHW, the latter providing DOS programs like "Mitspule.exe" and "Spulenprg.zip" for calculating antenna dimensions and coil conversions. The article outlines the construction of two prototype antennas: one for 7.050 MHz using a 75mm PVC pipe and another for 3.550 MHz with a 110mm PVC pipe. Both designs feature aluminum foil condensers and coils wound from 1mm² H07V-K wire. DL7JV provides specific measurements for the condenser capacitance, surface area, diameter, height, coil inductance, turns, and wire length for both 40m and 80m versions, along with RG58 feedline lengths. Initial reception tests for the 7 MHz antenna, placed indoors, yielded impressive S9+5 signals from a German station compared to an S8 from a 42-meter roof-mounted loop, even hearing a Japanese station. Transmission attempts on April 4, 2004, despite moderate solar storm conditions, resulted in successful QSOs on 7 MHz with EA5OT (579/559) and on 3.5 MHz with YT1NT (579/559) and G4KKI (579/559) using 100 Watts. DL7JV notes the antenna's sensitivity to coordination and feedline layout, suggesting a modification from DL7AXO involving a 500pF fixed capacitor and coil tap for improved SWR stability. He concludes that while the capacitive antenna is space-saving and performs well for reception and 100W transmission indoors, its transmit performance doesn't yet match larger antennas, with further outdoor field tests planned. DL7JV also intends to build a 1.8 MHz version.
