How High should my Dipole be? Dipole Antennas and the effect of height above ground. The effectiveness of a dipole antenna is influenced by its height above ground, determined by the intended use such as DX work, local communication, directionality, omni-directionality, and feed point impedance. Through EZNEC modeling, the study evaluates a 40-meter dipole's performance at various heights, from 7 to 560 feet. Findings reveal that lower heights enhance omni-directional local communication, while higher placements favor DX work with low-angle radiation. The study emphasizes the importance of defining operational goals to optimize dipole height and performance.

Presents the KE4UYP linear-loaded vertical antenna design, which introduces very little loss on 80 or 160 meters, achieving an overall radiation efficiency of 80% to 85%. This design addresses common pitfalls of traditional base-fed verticals by placing the majority of the current at the top of the antenna, eliminating the heavy reliance on extensive ground radial systems. The author's initial 10-meter model, only three feet tall, yielded 5/9 signal reports to Anchorage, AK, and Europe, confirming its effectiveness. The antenna incorporates both vertically and horizontally polarized radiators, with a 1/4 wavelength horizontal counterpoise located at the feed-point, near the top, to create an almost totally omnidirectional pattern with high wave angle horizontally polarized radiation. This dual polarization ensures even illumination across all take-off angles, making it effective for both local contacts and **DXing**. The vertical element is linear loaded, adding capacitance reactance and making it longer than the horizontal element to achieve resonance and raise the feed-point impedance to 50 ohms. Fine-tuning the antenna requires careful adjustment, as tower reactance can vary. The article suggests starting with 80 feet for 80m and 170 feet for 160m for the vertical wire, then trimming for resonance. Bandwidth specifications include 300 kHz under 2:1 **SWR** on 80m and 100 kHz on 160m when suspended between trees, or 150 kHz on 80m when side-mounted on a tower.

This drawing shows a simple 10 meter wire J-pole antenna designed for 28.4 MHz. It is a vertical, end-fed Zepp-style antenna made from common materials and intended for easy home construction. The main radiating element is a straight length of stranded copper wire, either 14 or 18 gauge, cut to about 16.5 feet. At the top, the wire is supported by an insulator, allowing the antenna to be hoisted vertically. The matching section is made from 450-ohm ladder line, approximately 7 feet 9.5 inches long, and shorted at the bottom. This matching stub transforms the impedance so the antenna can be fed with coaxial cable. The feed point is tapped about 6 inches above the bottom of the stub, with the shield and center conductor connected at the proper points. A choke balun is formed with five turns of RG-58 coax in a 4-inch diameter loop to help reduce unwanted RF on the feed line. The drawing notes that this antenna has about 0 dBd gain, similar to a dipole, but offers an omnidirectional pattern and low-angle radiation when installed high. Its main advantage is practical performance, simple construction, and effective coverage for 10 meter operation.

This project details three variants of a vertical half-wave antenna design for the 4-meter (70MHz) amateur radio band. The antennas use end-feeding with a parallel-tuned circuit for impedance matching to 50-ohm coaxial cable. The first variant uses suspended flexible wire for portable use, the second employs a fiberglass rod with internal wire for permanent outdoor installation, and the third utilizes aluminum tent poles for quick mobile deployment. Despite the narrow bandwidth of the matching circuit, this suits the narrow 4m FM allocation well. The design offers an effective omnidirectional radiation pattern and can be constructed with readily available materials.

WB2VUO presents a practical examination of effective HF mobile antennas, focusing on the inherent efficiency challenges encountered on the lower bands, specifically 160, 80, and 40 Meters. The resource delves into the necessity of loading coils for mobile operation below 21 MHz, where full-sized antennas are impractical. It contrasts base-loaded and center-loaded designs, noting that base-loaded antennas are simpler for the average ham to construct but offer lower efficiency compared to center-loaded configurations. The author provides specific data for an 8-foot whip, detailing its electrical length and _radiation resistance_ across various HF bands, from **0.08 ohms** on 160 Meters to **16.1 ohms** on 12 Meters. This data highlights the extremely low radiation resistance on lower frequencies, which significantly impacts feedpoint impedance due to ground and feedline losses. The discussion includes practical considerations for feedpoint impedance, noting that a typical 8-foot whip on 10 Meters might present 30-45 ohms, allowing for acceptable SWR without an ATU. Construction sketches illustrate both base-loaded and center-loaded mobile antennas, with advice on material selection like galvanized steel for rugged bottom sections. The article also includes coil value charts from the _ARRL Mobile Manual_ for both base and center loading, emphasizing the importance of using large diameter wire to minimize losses and suggesting capacity hats to reduce coil inductance and improve performance on 160-40 Meters.

Antenna Gain Explained delves into the fundamental principles behind antenna gain, a concept that often perplexes even seasoned RF engineers. The author, Marc, clarifies that antennas do not generate power but rather focus existing RF energy into desired directions, effectively reshaping the radiation pattern. He defines key terms such as _decibel (dB)_, _Antenna Gain_, and _Radiation Pattern_, emphasizing the distinction between dBD (referenced to a ½-wavelength dipole) and dBi (referenced to an imaginary isotropic antenna), noting that dBi figures are 2.14dB higher. The discussion illustrates how a standard ½-wavelength dipole's "doughnut" radiation pattern can be flattened into a "pancake" to achieve gains of 3dB, 6dB, or even 9dB by concentrating energy horizontally. Marc also explains how reflectors and directors are employed in directional antennas to further intensify radiation in a specific direction, potentially achieving gains as high as 20dB, albeit with a narrower effective angle. The concept of _Front-Back Ratio_ is introduced for directional antennas, detailing how some energy inevitably radiates to the rear due to diffraction, even with solid reflectors.

One common challenge in antenna systems is mitigating common-mode current on the feedline, which can distort radiation patterns and introduce RF in the shack. This project details a 1:1 balun design that ingeniously avoids traditional ferrite beads, often a costly component, by substituting them with steel wool. The steel wool, when integrated into the balun's construction, effectively attenuates unwanted RF on the outer braid of the coaxial cable, ensuring that the antenna radiates efficiently and as intended. The construction involves winding coaxial cable through a PVC former, with the steel wool strategically placed to provide the necessary common-mode impedance. This method offers a practical and economical alternative for hams looking to build effective baluns without the expense or availability issues associated with ferrite cores. The design principles focus on creating a balanced feed to the antenna, crucial for optimal performance of dipoles and other balanced radiators. Experimentation with such designs can lead to improved field results, particularly for those operating with limited budgets or seeking innovative solutions for their antenna systems. The simplicity of using readily available materials like steel wool makes this a compelling build for many radio amateurs.

The article describes building the antenna from readily available materials like copper pipe, emphasizing its simplicity and effectiveness for **single-band operation**. The J-Pole's inherent design provides a good impedance match to 50-ohm coaxial cable without the need for an external tuner, a significant advantage for portable or minimalist stations. Its nondirectional pattern ensures coverage in all directions, making it a versatile choice for general operating on the 28 MHz band. The construction plans are clear, allowing even those with basic workshop skills to assemble a functional antenna.

The antenna is tree-supported at 45 feet, with its effective radiation height modeled at 80 feet due to local terrain, enhancing its performance over a nearby lake.

This PDF document, authored by KT4QW in October 2004, details the construction and modeling of a dual-band, horizontally polarized hanging rectangular loop antenna for **10 and 17 meters**. The design, adapted from *The ARRL Handbook*, utilizes _NEC4WIN95_ software for scaling and optimization, targeting a 50 ohm feedpoint impedance. The resource includes a bill of materials, step-by-step construction instructions, and a discussion of the antenna's radiation characteristics. It presents NEC-generated elevation and azimuth patterns, comparing the loop's performance to a half-wave horizontal dipole at the same height and frequency. The 17-meter element is centered at 18.140 MHz for low SWR across the phone band, while the 10-meter element is centered at 28.500 MHz. Construction involves 14-gauge stranded copper wire and Schedule 40 PVC spreaders, with the total wire length calculated by the formula: Length in feet = 1005/MHz. The feedpoint impedance can be adjusted by modifying the rectangular aspect ratio. The document specifies hoisting the antenna to at least a half-wave above ground for testing. It notes that a balun was tested and found to have no measurable effect on SWR or radiation characteristics. A 2-meter scale model is presented to illustrate the physical design, and a "rotator" string is incorporated for directional adjustment up to 90 degrees.

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

This resource presents a technical guide detailing antenna measurement theory, focusing on the fundamental electromagnetic principles governing antenna operation and characterization. The document further elaborates on the mathematical definitions of these parameters, such as the Poynting vector (E x H*) for electromagnetic waves and the relationship between antenna gain and directivity. It also introduces related terms like mixers, which are critical components in antenna measurement instrumentation for frequency conversion (fIF = fRF +/-nfLO). The theoretical framework provided supports the scientific analysis of antenna performance, applicable to various antenna types and operational frequencies. 50 MHz meteor scatter offers a unique opportunity for amateur radio operators to make long-distance QSOs, even when the band appears dead. Meteor scatter involves reflecting radio waves off the ionized trails left by meteors burning up in the upper atmosphere, typically around 105 km high. These trails can facilitate contacts over distances up to approximately 2,300 km. The technique is particularly effective during meteor showers, which increase the number of meteors and thus the chances of successful QSOs. However, random meteors can also be used to achieve contacts, especially on the 50 MHz band, where the longer reflection time compared to 144 MHz makes it easier to work meteor scatter. Operators should be prepared to make QSOs in short bursts, often lasting only a few seconds. The IARU Region 1 meteor scatter procedure recommends using 2.5-minute periods for telegraphy and 1-minute periods for SSB, though shorter periods can be arranged. For 50 MHz SSB, 15-second timing is often used to maximize the chances of completing a contact. The procedure involves specific timing for transmissions based on direction and requires both operators to confirm receipt of callsigns and reports to complete a QSO. Understanding the geometry of meteor scatter, including the optimal radiation angles and the concept of 'hot spots,' is crucial. These hot spots are areas where reflections are most likely to occur, influenced by the Earth's rotation and the path of the meteors. Proper antenna setup, including elevation control and beam direction, can significantly enhance the chances of successful meteor scatter QSOs.

It claims a +3.6dB gain over a dipole (dipole gain 2.15dB) and a 6dB reduction in reception noise due to its closed design, which also minimizes harmonics and TVI. The antenna handles over 1.5kW (2kW PEP) without performance degradation and is effective for DX with a low radiation angle, especially when configured as an inverted V between 90° and 120° with ends 2 meters above ground. It eliminates the need for a balun and can be fed directly with 50-ohm coaxial cable.

A fractional bandwidth of up to 30:1 characterizes spiral antennas, making them highly effective across a very wide frequency range, often from 1 GHz to 30 GHz. The resource details two primary types: the **Log-Periodic Spiral Antenna** and the **Archimedean Spiral Antenna**, defining each with specific polar functions and illustrating their planar configurations. It explains that spiral antennas are typically circularly polarized, with a Half-Power Beamwidth (HPBW) of approximately 70-90 degrees, and a peak radiation direction perpendicular to the spiral plane. Ten essential tips and truisms for understanding HF antenna: Non-resonant wire dipole antennas fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function effectively as multiband antennas, as detailed in "The Classic Multiband Dipole Antenna" by WB8IMY in March 2004 QST. Coaxial cable, unlike balanced parallel-wire feed lines, can cause RF to travel on the outer shield braid, leading to RF feedback to the station; a 1:1 balun at the dipole center can mitigate this by isolating the unbalanced coaxial feed line. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and directing RF energy, with beam antennas concentrating power in a specific direction, and wire antennas also exhibiting shaped radiation patterns. An antenna tuner's primary role is to match the transceiver's 50-ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, allowing modern transceivers to deliver full power. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (like the Windom) can be used, though they often necessitate an antenna tuner and a counterpoise or radial network. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent or inclined, which affects feed point impedance and may require SWR experimentation with coaxial feed. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength require an efficient ground system, typically comprising elevated or buried radial wires, with more radials generally leading to better efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee antenna efficiency; an inefficient vertical antenna with a poor ground system can show a low SWR while wasting most RF as heat. Investing in high-quality, low-loss feed line, especially coaxial cable, is crucial for maximizing RF signal transfer and overall antenna system performance.

The NB6Zep Antenna, an electrically shortened 80-meter end-fed wire, addresses space constraints for low-band operation by integrating two loading coils into a 37-foot wire. This design, modeled with _EZNEC_, explores configurations like the quarter-wave sloper and inverted-L, with the latter providing a more vertical radiation pattern and practical backyard deployment. The resource details specific coil construction, recommending 21 uH coils made from _BW coil stock #3026_ or similar, and outlines wire segment lengths for optimal tuning. Performance analysis indicates a radiating efficiency of approximately 27% with good ground conductivity, resulting in a signal typically 3-4 dB down compared to a full-size quarter-wave vertical. The Tri-pole antenna, a clever modification of a standard dipole, allows for dual-band operation by integrating a third element. This design effectively shortens the overall dipole length by 10 to 20 percent, simplifying antenna rotation and offering a compact footprint. KK4OBI's article delves into the operational principles, using a 6 and 10-meter Tri-pole as a primary example, and provides comprehensive instructions for constructing any Tri-pole antenna within the 6 to 15-meter range. Key to the Tri-pole's performance is its off-center feed, necessitating a common mode choke at the feed point for optimal tuning and reduced noise. The author outlines a methodical approach to determining element dimensions, starting with a vertical element frequency calculated as 0.47 times the sum of the desired upper and lower band frequencies. This calculation, along with K-values derived from trend lines, guides the initial lengths for the horizontal arms, demonstrating how a 10m-6m Tri-pole can achieve a total horizontal length 78% shorter than a conventional 10-meter dipole. Tuning and balancing are critical, with the article detailing adjustments to arm lengths and the vertical element to achieve balanced SWR values, as validated through 4NEC2 simulations. Radiation patterns are analyzed at various elevations, showing gains around 5.7 dBi and favorable take-off angles for DX contacts. Construction details specify aluminum tubing dimensions, U-bolts, and an SO-239 connector, emphasizing the importance of a ferrite-based choke for wideband operation.

The 20-10 meter fan dipole antenna described here offers broadside East/West coverage, a characteristic I've found particularly useful for working DX across the Atlantic and Pacific from my QTH. This design connects multiple dipoles of varying lengths in parallel at a single feedpoint, enabling operation across 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters without the need for an external antenna tuner or switching. The guide specifies element lengths for each band, constructed using 1/2 inch PVC pipe for the elements and a 2-inch PVC pipe for the 8-inch long feedpoint connector, ensuring a robust build. Key advantages highlighted include its multi-band coverage, simplified installation, cost-effectiveness, and improved efficiency compared to single-band alternatives. The antenna is horizontally polarized when deployed at a height of 50 feet, providing a favorable radiation pattern for long-haul contacts. Materials required are readily available, including PVC pipes, _RG-8X_ feedline, antenna wire, and guying rope, making it an accessible project for most hams. This _fan dipole_ project provides practical considerations for construction and tuning, aiming for optimal SWR performance across the target bands. The detailed instructions, coupled with the specified components, allow for a straightforward build, even for those with limited antenna building experience, yielding a capable HF antenna for the upper bands.

Steve Nichols, G0KYA, presents a practical examination of ground systems for vertical antennas, drawing heavily on the empirical research of Rudy Severns, N6LF. He explains that a robust radial field is crucial for ground-dependent verticals, effectively replacing the antenna's "missing half" and mitigating severe RF absorption in lossy soil. Nichols clarifies that surface radials do not strictly require a quarter-wavelength; instead, deploying a minimum of 16 to 32 shorter wires often yields superior results compared to fewer, longer ones. The presentation also addresses the common SWR paradox: a poor ground might show a perfect 1:1 match, but adding radials, while potentially raising the SWR to around 1.4:1, significantly improves true radiation efficiency. Nichols defines counterpoises as elevated wire networks that substitute for earth connections, offering solutions for limited-space installations, such as the **Folded Counterpoise (FCP)** for 160 meters. This resource provides actionable engineering data for optimizing vertical antenna performance.

Constructing a directional antenna for VHF operations, particularly for 2-meter band contests or local communication, often involves balancing performance with ease of build. The Moxon rectangle, a compact two-element beam, offers a good front-to-back ratio and gain in a smaller footprint compared to a Yagi, making it suitable for portable or temporary setups where space is limited. This design typically uses a driven element and a single reflector, bent into a rectangular shape to achieve its unique radiation pattern. The article details the construction of a 2-meter Moxon antenna, specifically for 144 MHz, utilizing readily available materials like PVC pipe for the frame and copper wire for the elements. It outlines the dimensions for the driven element at 970mm and the reflector at 910mm, with a spacing of 140mm between them, and a 50mm gap at the element ends. The feedpoint is a direct 50-ohm connection, simplifying matching requirements. The project includes a parts list, a basic diagram illustrating the element layout and dimensions, and photographs of the completed antenna. The author notes the antenna's performance during a QRP contest, achieving contacts up to 100km with 5 watts, demonstrating its effectiveness for low-power VHF work.

A 20 cm mobile antenna design is presented, addressing the need for compact, mechanically stable solutions for VHF/UHF mobile communications. This resource details the _SN 1/8_ antenna, an alternative to traditional quarter-wave or 5/8-wave whips, specifically engineered for robust performance in dynamic, moving environments. The design emphasizes a spherical radiation pattern, which is claimed to enhance signal reflections and contribute to a 2 dB gain over standard mobile antennas, making it suitable for vehicle installations where discretion and vibration resistance are critical. The construction guide includes diagrams and practical considerations for building this antenna, which is noted for its ease of installation and resilience. The design's compact form factor and inherent stability are key advantages for mobile operators seeking reliable and efficient communication without the bulk or fragility of longer antenna systems. The resource, authored by _F5SN_, provides a practical approach to improving mobile station effectiveness.

A 5/8-wavelength vertical antenna offers a lower angle of radiation compared to a 1/4-wavelength vertical, which is crucial for maximizing DX contacts. This design achieves its optimal radiation pattern by effectively compressing the main lobe closer to the horizon, resulting in a more efficient signal path for long-distance communication. The article details how the current distribution along the antenna element influences the radiation pattern, illustrating why a 5/8-wave radiator typically exhibits a gain of approximately **3 dB** over a 1/4-wave vertical when both are operating over a perfect ground plane. Understanding the _radiation pattern_ and current distribution is key to selecting the appropriate vertical antenna for specific operating goals. While a 1/4-wave vertical is simpler to implement and often used for local contacts, the 5/8-wave design is preferred by DXers seeking to exploit its lower take-off angle. The article also touches upon the practical considerations of feeding a 5/8-wave vertical, which typically requires a matching network to transform its inherent reactive impedance to a standard 50-ohm feedline impedance. This technical explanation clarifies the performance differences.

This article explores the conventional wisdom about antenna height in amateur radio operations, challenging the common belief that "higher is always better." Through practical examples and computer modeling, it examines how low-height antennas like Beverage antennas, VP2E, and End-Fed Half Wave (EFHW) configurations can perform effectively in various scenarios. The analysis includes radiation patterns and efficiency considerations for antennas at different heights, particularly focusing on portable operations. The article demonstrates that while height affects antenna performance, lower installations can still provide practical and efficient solutions for specific applications, especially in portable and QRP operations.

7MHz to 30MHz operation is achieved with a magnetic-mounted HF antenna designed for car roof deployment, capable of handling 100 Watts without an external antenna tuner. The design incorporates a large base-loading coil with multiple taps, allowing for frequency selection across various HF bands. This coil effectively increases the electrical length of a short telescopic antenna element, compensating for its inherent capacitance. Construction involves 3D-printed components for the coil former and support structures, though conventional building methods using plastic drainpipes are also suggested. The car body serves as the ground plane, with the coil assembly mounted on a 500mm square metal plate secured by super neodymium magnets. Protection under the magnets is advised to prevent vehicle scratches. Detailed instructions cover winding the 30-turn coil with 2.5mm diameter household electrical cable, assembling the 3D-printed parts, and making soldered connections. Taps are staggered every five turns for precise frequency adjustment. Performance examples include a 7913km contact to Japan using a 1.5m element and 100 Watts, demonstrating low-angle radiation and omni-directional pattern with minimal S-point loss compared to a full quarter-wave.

A vertical delta loop is a practical antenna for low bands, popular for its simple design requiring just one support. Its shape, an equilateral triangle in free space, yields optimal gain and radiation resistance. Deviating from this shape lowers performance. The delta loop can be polarized either horizontally or vertically based on the feed point location. In vertical polarization, it acts as two quarter-wave verticals with the baseline feeding one side. This design minimizes radiation from the baseline while maintaining effective operation.
