This resource presents a technical guide detailing antenna measurement theory, focusing on the fundamental electromagnetic principles governing antenna operation and characterization. It delineates the three primary spatial regions surrounding an antenna: the reactive field (0 < r < lambda/2pi), the radiating near-field (lambda/2pi < r < 2D2/lambda), and the radiating far-field (r > **2D2/lambda**). The guide defines key antenna parameters, including polarization, input impedance, VSWR, directivity, gain, efficiency, Effective Isotropically Radiated Power (EIRP), antenna noise temperature, and the G/T parameter. Radiation patterns are discussed, with examples of both rectangular and polar forms, emphasizing the determination of patterns in the far-field region for constant radial distance and frequency, typically characterized by a main beam with **3 dB** beamwidth and sidelobes. The document further elaborates on the mathematical definitions of these parameters, such as the Poynting vector (E x H*) for electromagnetic waves and the relationship between antenna gain and directivity. It also introduces related terms like mixers, which are critical components in antenna measurement instrumentation for frequency conversion (fIF = fRF +/-nfLO). The theoretical framework provided supports the scientific analysis of antenna performance, applicable to various antenna types and operational frequencies. The **70cm Moxon Beam** project outlines the construction and testing of a compact, directional antenna for the 432 MHz band. G3XBM recounts his early 1980s experience with a 4W FM321 transceiver and a Jaybeam 48-element TV antenna, which provided a baseline for his later UHF antenna experiments. This project focuses on a simpler, yet effective, design for local and regional contacts, emphasizing ease of construction and practical field results over complex theory. The article details the specific dimensions and materials used for the Moxon rectangle, including 6mm diameter aluminum tubing for the elements and a PVC boom. G3XBM notes that the antenna was built for portable use, making it lightweight and easily deployable for field operations. The feedpoint impedance was measured at 50 ohms, ensuring a direct match without the need for an external tuner, which simplifies setup. Performance tests included comparisons against a commercial 5-element Yagi, revealing that the Moxon provided comparable forward gain and an excellent front-to-back ratio, crucial for reducing local QRM. The author's observations confirm the Moxon's reputation as a robust performer for its size, suitable for both fixed and portable 70cm operations.

A fractional bandwidth of up to 30:1 characterizes spiral antennas, making them highly effective across a very wide frequency range, often from 1 GHz to 30 GHz. The resource details two primary types: the **Log-Periodic Spiral Antenna** and the **Archimedean Spiral Antenna**, defining each with specific polar functions and illustrating their planar configurations. It explains that spiral antennas are typically circularly polarized, with a Half-Power Beamwidth (HPBW) of approximately 70-90 degrees, and a peak radiation direction perpendicular to the spiral plane. The content elaborates on critical design parameters affecting radiation, including the total length (outer radius) for lowest frequency, the flare rate ('a' constant) for optimal radiation versus capacitive behavior, the feed structure (often an infinite balun) for high-frequency operation, and the number of turns (typically 1.5 to 3 turns). It also discusses the theoretical impedance of 188 Ohms for Log-Periodic spirals, derived from Babinet's Principle, noting actual impedances are often 100-150 Ohms. The article presents a simple construction method for an Archimedean spiral, demonstrating VSWR and efficiency measurements. Measurements from a constructed spiral antenna show a VSWR that is fairly constant across the band, albeit with a mismatch loss of about 3 dB. The antenna efficiency remains around -5 dB (31.6%) across its operating range, indicating a decent wideband radiator despite opportunities for optimization.

Constructing an End-Fed Half-Wave (EFHW) antenna offers a practical solution for HF operators seeking a multiband wire antenna without the need for extensive radial systems. This design typically employs a high-impedance transformer at the feed point, matching the antenna's inherent high impedance to a 50-ohm coaxial feedline. The article specifically details a 2012 approach, focusing on a transformer with a 49:1 turns ratio, which is a common configuration for EFHW antennas. The resource outlines the construction of a wire element cut for a half-wavelength on the lowest desired band, with specific coil arrangements enabling operation on harmonically related bands such as 40m, 20m, and 10m. It discusses the physical dimensions and winding details for the matching transformer, often utilizing a ferrite toroid core to achieve the necessary impedance transformation. The content provides insights into the operational principles and practical considerations for deploying such an antenna, including methods for tuning and optimizing performance across multiple amateur radio bands. The resource, "Conventional Use of Transmission Line," meticulously details the operational principles of transmission lines, emphasizing the Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) mode of energy transfer. It clarifies that for a line to function purely as a transmission line, all currents must be confined internally, with external fields ideally zero. The discussion differentiates between balanced and unbalanced lines, asserting that while both require equal and opposite currents within the conductors, the key distinction lies in the voltage relationship of each conductor to the surrounding environment. It highlights that a good antenna pattern does not inherently confirm proper feeder balance, and that common-mode currents can lead to RF in the shack and increased noise levels, even without pattern distortion. The article further explains that a transmission line can become a radiating conductor if energy is applied in a non-TEM mode, leading to common-mode issues. It cites classic texts like Jordan and Balmain's "_Electromagnetic Waves and Radiating Systems_" and Kraus's "_Antennas_" to support its definitions of TEM mode operation. The content also explores non-transmission line applications of parallel or concentric conductors, such as _coaxial dipoles_ and _folded dipoles_, which intentionally operate in non-TEM modes for antenna functionality. The author, _W8JI_, stresses that simply measuring equal currents is insufficient to confirm a balanced feeder; phase and voltage balance to ground are equally critical.
