An Attic Coaxial-Cable trap dipole for 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, and 80 meters

The "Mighty-Wide" six-meter dipole antenna, constructed from 300-ohm ribbon cable, features a total radiating element length of 2794 millimeters. It incorporates two shorting links placed 220 millimeters from each end and a 30 picofarad ceramic trimmer capacitor for impedance matching. The 50-ohm coaxial feedline connects 292 millimeters below the trimmer capacitor, eliminating the need for an external antenna tuning unit. This design provides a wide bandwidth from 50.00 to 52.00 MHz, making it suitable for the entire UK six-meter band allocation. Performance comparisons with a traditional coaxial dipole show superior **Standing Wave Ratio** (SWR) across the 50-52 MHz range, maintaining a low SWR without significant variation after initial adjustment at 51.00 MHz. The antenna's lightweight construction makes it ideal for **loft-mounted** or portable applications, and its folded dipole characteristics contribute to its wideband operation. The design is being considered for rescaling to WARC bands (12 and 17 meters) and 10 meters.

DJ9RB details several antenna projects, including loaded dipoles and verticals specifically for the 160m, 80m, and 40m amateur radio bands. Featured designs include a 160m loaded dipole with end capacitance, a 160m loaded L-antenna, and a 160m kite-supported vertical. For 80m, the resource describes a short broadband dipole (80BBDP), an 8m high top-loaded vertical (TLV80) with elevated radials, and a shielded loop for 3.5 MHz. For the 40m band, a 7m high top-loaded vertical (TLV40) and a 6m high portable top-loaded GP (TLV40mesh) are presented, both optimized for 7 MHz. Additional dipole designs cover 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, and 6m bands, utilizing coaxial cable traps. The page also mentions specific vertical antenna variants like the TLV20 (GP14MHz) with two radials and the TLV30HWL-10MHz, a loaded half-wavelength vertical. The content includes information on high-power homemade components, such as a 3.5 MHz AM transmitter from 1964 and a 14 MHz portable transceiver from 1977. It also touches upon measurement instruments, BNC connector assembly, and QTH details from DJ9RB's operations, including H44/DJ9RB from the Solomon Islands.

Two dipoles fed from the same coaxial line by n6bz for 20 and 15 meters

Determining the actual need for an antenna tuner often hinges on the specific antenna and feed line configuration in use. While many hams believe a tuner is always essential, its primary role is to present a 50-ohm impedance to the transceiver, not to "tune" the antenna itself. For instance, a resonant dipole fed with _coaxial cable_ at its design frequency typically requires no tuner, as the feed line impedance closely matches the radio's output. However, operating a non-resonant antenna, or using a resonant antenna on multiple bands, frequently necessitates a tuner to manage high Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) on the feed line. The article clarifies that a tuner placed at the transceiver only matches the radio to the feed line, not the antenna to the feed line. For maximum efficiency with a non-resonant antenna, an _automatic antenna tuner_ (ATU) or a remote tuner placed at the antenna feed point is often more effective, minimizing losses in the feed line. The discussion also touches on the practical implications of SWR, noting that modern transceivers often fold back power at high SWR, making a tuner a practical necessity to achieve full output power, even if the antenna itself is not perfectly matched.

The G3TPW CobWebb antenna design provides a compact, horizontally polarized, omni-directional solution for 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m bands. This antenna utilizes five full-size half-wave dipoles, each bent into a square configuration to achieve omni-directional radiation without the nulls typically found in straight dipoles. The design incorporates a single 50-ohm coaxial feedline with an integrated air-core choke balun, minimizing feeder radiation and reducing EMC issues. Construction details include using PVC-covered multi-stranded copper twin cable for elements, supported by a fiberglass cross. The document specifies tapping points for impedance matching to 50 ohms on all five bands, ensuring high radiation efficiency without lossy traps or loading coils. Physical dimensions are compact, with 2.6-meter (8.5 feet) sides and a total weight of 6 kg (14 lbs), making it suitable for mounting on a 20-foot aluminum scaffold pole. Detailed instructions for assembling the junction box, including terminal strip wiring and the coaxial choke balun, are provided with photographs and diagrams. The design emphasizes a confined electric field to reduce coupling to nearby conductors, which helps mitigate TVI and makes the antenna less sensitive to mounting height or ground conductivity.

For amateur radio operators utilizing _APRS_ or requiring an external antenna for their GPS receiver, this resource details the construction of a compact, circularly polarized mobile antenna. The design is based on a classic turnstile configuration, employing two dipoles rotated 90° from each other and spaced a quarter-wavelength above a ground plane. A parallel-plate transmission line, fabricated from printed circuit board material, serves as both the connection method and mounting post for the dipoles, simplifying the feed network for circular polarization at 1.57542 GHz. The article outlines the fabrication process, starting with a 4-inch diameter hobby tin or brass base plate and #14 solid copper wire elements. It specifies using _RG-58/U_ or similar 50-ohm coax, with an 8-foot maximum length to minimize loss at the GPS frequency. The parallel-plate transmission line is constructed from two 2-inch lengths of single-sided _FR-4_ or G10 PCB material, 0.062-inch thick, with a specific 45° microwave turn cut on the active side. Final assembly involves an 8-ounce cream cheese container as a radome, and the article discusses the self-phased quadrature feed method to achieve circular polarization without a coaxial phasing line, resulting in an omnidirectional pattern suitable for GPS satellite reception.

This drawing shows a simple 10 meter wire J-pole antenna designed for 28.4 MHz. It is a vertical, end-fed Zepp-style antenna made from common materials and intended for easy home construction. The main radiating element is a straight length of stranded copper wire, either 14 or 18 gauge, cut to about 16.5 feet. At the top, the wire is supported by an insulator, allowing the antenna to be hoisted vertically. The matching section is made from 450-ohm ladder line, approximately 7 feet 9.5 inches long, and shorted at the bottom. This matching stub transforms the impedance so the antenna can be fed with coaxial cable. The feed point is tapped about 6 inches above the bottom of the stub, with the shield and center conductor connected at the proper points. A choke balun is formed with five turns of RG-58 coax in a 4-inch diameter loop to help reduce unwanted RF on the feed line. The drawing notes that this antenna has about 0 dBd gain, similar to a dipole, but offers an omnidirectional pattern and low-angle radiation when installed high. Its main advantage is practical performance, simple construction, and effective coverage for 10 meter operation.

This improved multiband trap dipole introduces a new trap design and a change in trap location. The antenna features double-coaxial-cable-wound traps having lower reactance and a higher quality factor (Q) than earlier coax-cable traps by W8NX

One common challenge in antenna systems is mitigating common-mode current on the feedline, which can distort radiation patterns and introduce RF in the shack. This project details a 1:1 balun design that ingeniously avoids traditional ferrite beads, often a costly component, by substituting them with steel wool. The steel wool, when integrated into the balun's construction, effectively attenuates unwanted RF on the outer braid of the coaxial cable, ensuring that the antenna radiates efficiently and as intended. The construction involves winding coaxial cable through a PVC former, with the steel wool strategically placed to provide the necessary common-mode impedance. This method offers a practical and economical alternative for hams looking to build effective baluns without the expense or availability issues associated with ferrite cores. The design principles focus on creating a balanced feed to the antenna, crucial for optimal performance of dipoles and other balanced radiators. Experimentation with such designs can lead to improved field results, particularly for those operating with limited budgets or seeking innovative solutions for their antenna systems. The simplicity of using readily available materials like steel wool makes this a compelling build for many radio amateurs.

Described here is a simple omni-directional, vertically-polarized dipole for two meters. Made from coaxial cable, it can be rolled up and stored in a small container

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

The N0KHQ Coax Square antenna, designed for 17 meters and built using RG-58 coaxial cable, presents an intriguing option for hams with limited space. L. B. Cebik, _W4RNL_, meticulously models and analyzes this array, clarifying its classification not as a modified Moxon, but as a distinct member of the "dual-coupled, 2-element, parasitic array" family. The design leverages the velocity factor of RG-58 (approximately 0.66-0.67) to achieve significantly shorter element lengths compared to full-size counterparts, resulting in a perimeter of 42 feet for the N0KHQ array versus 54 feet for a standard Moxon. _NEC_ modeling reveals the coax square's performance characteristics, including a forward gain of 5.6 dBi and a 23.7 dB front-to-back ratio on 18.118 MHz. While slightly less gain than a Moxon (6.0 dBi), its pattern exhibits Yagi-like nulls at 90 degrees, distinguishing it from the Moxon's wider beamwidth. The article also delves into the unique feedpoint considerations, explaining how the split braid and center conductor of the RG-58 driver effectively form a folded dipole, allowing for impedance transformation to achieve a good match for 50-Ohm cable. Despite its shortened elements, which inherently narrow the operating bandwidth, the coax square maintains satisfactory performance across the 17-meter band. The analysis emphasizes that while SWR curves are important, a holistic view of gain and pattern degradation across the band is crucial. This antenna is a viable solution for operators needing a compact, directional array, particularly for narrow bands like 17, 30, or 12 meters, where its high-Q performance is most effective.

The 10-meter EH Antenna document details the construction and performance of a specific EH antenna design for the 10-meter band. It describes the integration of an L+L balanced matching network, a key component for impedance transformation, and highlights the addition of a tuned coaxial trap. This trap, consisting of 8 turns of RG58 coax wound around PVC tube and resonated at 29 MHz with a 10 pF capacitor, effectively inhibits common-mode current on the feeder, stabilizing antenna tuning. The resource presents a circuit diagram in Figure 1 and assembly details in Figure 2, illustrating the use of PVC plumbing tube as host material for dipole cylinders made from recycled aluminum tubing. It also explains the fabrication of capacitor stators and slider sections from thin aluminum tubing. The author, Lloyd Butler VK5BR, discusses initial challenges with feeder interaction and how the tuned trap resolved these issues, leading to stable tuning. Limited backyard tests indicate that the antenna, with the trap fitted close to the input connector, might exhibit similar field strength for both low and high angle transmission, suggesting a potential skewing of the signal. The document references previous articles by VK5BR in "Amateur Radio" for further operational details of the matching network and trap functionality.

The page describes the construction of a simple omnidirectional, vertically-polarised dipole antenna for two metres using coaxial cable. It can be used indoors or outdoors, with no extravagant gain claims. The project is low-cost and can be completed in about 20 minutes.

Constructing a Lindenblad antenna for 137MHz NOAA satellite reception involves specific design considerations for optimal performance. The resource details the use of 4mm galvanised steel fencing wire, 300-ohm television ribbon cable, and wood/plastic components for the antenna structure. Key dimensions for a 137.58MHz-resonant antenna are provided, derived from the ARRL Satellite Handbook, specifying s, l, w, and d as 42, 926, 893, and 654mm respectively. The antenna is designed for Right Hand Circularly Polarised (RHCP) signals, requiring the four folded dipole elements to be tilted clockwise by 30 degrees. A significant aspect covered is impedance matching between the antenna's 75-ohm impedance and a typical 50-ohm receiver input. A twelfth-wave matching transformer, constructed from 117mm sections of 50-ohm RG-58 and 75-ohm RG-59 coax with a 0.66 velocity factor, is described. The article also addresses coaxial cable and connector selection, recommending 75-ohm Type-N connectors for RG-6 cable in professional setups and F56/F59 connectors for general use, while strongly advising against PL-259/SO-259 connectors for VHF. Strategies for mitigating Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) are discussed, including antenna placement to shield from local TV transmitters and the use of commercial or DIY band-pass filters, such as cavity resonators or helical notch filters, along with ferrite chokes on coaxial cables. Antenna orientation is explored, noting the Lindenblad's 'cone of silence' directly overhead and its maximized sensitivity towards the horizon. An experimental vertical tilt of 90 degrees is presented as a method to improve overhead reception and reduce interference from strong horizontal signals, particularly relevant in high RFI environments like the Siding Spring Observatory site.

This resource details the computer-optimized design of the _ZS6BKW_ multiband dipole, an evolution of the classic _G5RV_ antenna. It begins by referencing the original 1958 RSGB Bulletin article by Louis Varney G5RV, explaining the operational principles of the G5RV's flat-top and open-wire feedline on 20m and 40m, noting its impedance transformation characteristics for valve amplifiers of that era. The article then transitions to the rationale for optimizing the design for contemporary solid-state transceivers requiring a 50 Ohm match. The core of the project involves using computer modeling to determine optimal lengths for the flat-top and matching section, aiming for a VSWR of less than 2:1 on multiple HF bands. It discusses the process of calculating feedpoint impedance based on antenna length and frequency, referencing professional literature from Professor R.W.P. King at Harvard University. The analysis also considers the characteristic impedance (Z(O)) of the open-wire line, identifying a broad peak of adequate values between 275 and 400 Ohms. Specific design parameters for the improved ZS6BKW are presented, including a shorter flat-top and a longer matching section compared to the original G5RV, with a velocity factor of 0.85 for the 300 Ohm tape. The article confirms acceptable matches on 7, 14, 18, 24, and 28 MHz bands when erected horizontally at 13m, and also discusses performance in an inverted-V configuration, noting frequency shifts. The author, Brian Austin ZS6BKW, emphasizes the antenna's suitability for modern 50 Ohm coaxial cable without a balun.

Connecting centre fed antennas, dipoles, yagis, rhombics, loops to coaxial cable, unless care is taken, it is not difficult to end up with feeder radiation resulting in power loss and the radiation characteristics changes

A balun is a MUST for dipoles or similar antennas when they are feed with coaxial cables. Many hams connect the center conductor of the coaxial cable to one side of the dipole, and the shield to the other. Wrong!

The document provides a comprehensive overview of baluns, which are devices used to connect balanced loads, like dipole antennas, to unbalanced inputs, such as coaxial cables. It covers various types of baluns, including voltage and current baluns, and their design, construction, and testing. The text discusses the importance of baluns in preventing RF currents on coax shields and their applications in Ham radio setups. It also includes practical advice on selecting and using baluns based on antenna impedance and power ratings, along with detailed performance evaluations and construction tips for different balun configurations.

The G5RV multiband HF antenna, designed by Louis Varney (G5RV) in 1946, is a popular compromise antenna offering good overall performance on most HF bands when paired with an external antenna tuner. The basic full-size G5RV measures 102 feet across the top for 80 through 10 meter operation and is fed at the center via a 34-foot low-loss feed-stub. This interaction between the radiating section and the feed-stub facilitates matching across 80-10 meters with a standard tuner, often eliminating the need for ladder line directly to the shack. The antenna's design center frequency is 14.150 MHz, configured as a 3/2-wave dipole on 20 meters, with its 102-foot length derived from long-wire antenna formulas. Construction details emphasize the matching section, which can be open wire, ladder line (window-type), or TV twin lead. Each type has a specific velocity factor (VF) affecting its physical length for an electrical half-wave on 14 MHz; for instance, open wire requires 33.7 feet (VF 0.97), ladder line 31.3 feet (VF 0.90), and TV twin lead 28.5 feet (VF 0.82). The article provides formulas for calculating these lengths and discusses the antenna's behavior on individual bands, from 3.5 MHz where it acts as a shortened dipole, to 28 MHz where it functions as two three-half-wave long-wire antennas fed in-phase. Practical construction notes include recommendations for vertical descent of the matching section, sealing the coax junction, providing strain relief, and winding a coaxial choke coil to mitigate common mode current. The resource also presents dimensions for double-size (204 ft) and half-size (51 ft) G5RV versions, along with their corresponding matching section lengths for various line types, making it a versatile reference for hams considering this classic wire antenna.

The Resonant Feedline Dipole (RFD) HF antenna design utilizes a single piece of coaxial cable and a stranded wire section, forming a 1/4-wavelength radiator. This configuration, based on a 1997 ARRL Handbook design (page 20.17), functions by RF traveling on the inside of the coax shield and returning on the outside, creating the second half of the dipole. A choke wound into the feedline prevents RF current from flowing back down the feedline. Construction details include using RG-58a/u coax for a 75m version, with a 1/4-wavelength section of stranded wire soldered to the center conductor. The document provides choke dimensions for RG-213, RG-8, and RG-58 coax across 3.5 MHz to 28 MHz, specifying cable length and number of turns. Dipole dimensions are also tabulated for frequencies from 3.6 MHz to 28.4 MHz, listing overall length and individual leg lengths. Field tests included deployment near Bryson City at 5 feet off the ground and as a sloper during WCARS Field Day in Asheville, yielding successful local and regional contacts.

Demonstrates the construction of a double bazooka antenna, detailing its historical development from MIT radar applications in the 1940s to amateur radio use in the 1950s. It explains the antenna's operation as a 1/2 lambda coaxial section with open-ended stubs, acting as a shortened quarter-wave stub at resonance, presenting high impedance. The resource provides formulas for calculating total length (LT = 140/Freq) and coaxial length (LC = 99/Freq) for RG58 CU, along with specific instructions for cutting and soldering components, including a central insulator and end wires. Compares the double bazooka to a standard dipole, highlighting its 98% efficiency and twice the bandwidth. It claims a +3.6dB gain over a dipole (dipole gain 2.15dB) and a 6dB reduction in reception noise due to its closed design, which also minimizes harmonics and TVI. The antenna handles over 1.5kW (2kW PEP) without performance degradation and is effective for DX with a low radiation angle, especially when configured as an inverted V between 90° and 120° with ends 2 meters above ground. It eliminates the need for a balun and can be fed directly with 50-ohm coaxial cable.

Demonstrates the adaptation and construction of a 7-element DK7ZB Yagi antenna for the 4-meter band (70 MHz), utilizing components from a defunct 2-meter CUE DEE Yagi. The resource details the modifications made to the original DK7ZB design to fit the shorter CUE DEE boom length, specifically adjusting element lengths for 6mm rod elements while reusing existing mounting holes for the reflector and last director. It provides precise element lengths for the reflector, dipole (12mm aluminum tube), and five directors, along with a note on cutting elements for transport. The article includes a 4NEC2 simulation file for performance analysis and an SWR plot, confirming the antenna's electrical characteristics. It also specifies the calculation for the quarter-wavelength matching cable using SAT752F coaxial cable, resulting in a 909mm length. Practical application is shown with the finished antenna in operation at JO20XC, listing several activated Maidenhead squares such as JO56PA and JP40KS, validating its effectiveness for portable 70 MHz operations.

This resource details the four primary functions of a ground system: lightning energy dispersion, equipment safety, RF return path provision for end-fed antennas, and management of induced RF currents. It clarifies that a ground system's effectiveness varies depending on its specific function, noting that a good lightning ground might not be an effective RF ground. The content emphasizes that proper antenna system design, including baluns and appropriate feedline lengths, often negates the need for an RF station ground to mitigate common mode currents or RFI in the shack. The article quantifies lightning energy, stating its peak is in the dozens or hundreds of kilohertz, with damaging energy extending to hundreds of megahertz, and currents reaching thousands of amperes. It recommends solid, wide, smooth copper surfaces for ground leads to achieve low impedance across a wide frequency range. The author, W8JI, shares practical insights from his station, which includes two 300-ft towers and four 130-ft wire verticals, detailing his use of common point grounds and _DX Engineering RR-8 HD_ antenna switches for lightning protection without coaxial surge protectors. Specific examples of antenna systems prone to common mode current problems are listed, such as random wire antennas without proper feedline lengths and off-center fed dipoles. The text also explains how a ground screen or radial system can reduce local noise sensitivity for vertically polarized antennas by covering the lossy earth.

The X80 multi-band HF vertical antenna, a commercial iteration of the Rybakov design, exhibits a physical length of 5.5 meters, or approximately 18 feet, and is constructed from aluminum tubing. It operates as a non-resonant vertical, requiring an external antenna tuner for impedance matching across its intended operating frequencies. The antenna's design incorporates a 1:4 UNUN at its base, facilitating a nominal 50-ohm feed point impedance for the coaxial cable. Performance observations indicate effective operation on 40 meters, 20 meters, 15 meters, and 10 meters, with reduced efficiency on 80 meters and 160 meters due to its relatively short electrical length for these lower bands. Comparative analysis with a G5RV dipole and a half-wave end-fed antenna reveals the X80 offers a lower take-off angle, beneficial for DX contacts, particularly on the higher HF bands. Field tests conducted with an Icom IC-706MKIIG transceiver and an LDG AT-100ProII autotuner demonstrate the X80's ability to achieve acceptable SWR across 80m through 10m. The antenna's compact footprint and ease of deployment make it suitable for restricted spaces or portable operations, though its performance on 80 meters is noted as a compromise compared to full-size resonant antennas.

This web article by VK3BLG details the construction of an experimental 70cm (432 MHz) circularly polarized patch antenna, intended for satellite communication. The resource provides dimensions, feed point specifications, and impedance matching considerations for a single patch element, with discussion extending to array configurations for circular polarization. Construction involves a copper patch element on a dielectric substrate, fed via a coaxial cable. The design is based on information derived from AO-40 satellite antenna specifications, focusing on achieving circular polarization for satellite reception. The article includes specific dimensions for the patch and feed points, along with impedance values. Validation is implied through on-air satellite reception reports, with initial signal reports of **1 S-point above noise** for AO-40 beacons using a grid reflector, improving to **3-4 S-points above noise** with a 2-turn helical feed. The author references a _NanoVNA_ for impedance measurements and discusses the relationship between slot and dipole antennas in the context of patch design. Designing and constructing portable wire antennas for HF operations, this resource explores several configurations including the _foldback dipole_ for space-constrained setups and an inductively shortened dual-band dipole for 20m and 40m. It details the calculation of inductance for shortened elements, providing a Visual Basic 6.0 program screenshot that illustrates determining coil parameters like turns and length for a **25.5 uH** inductor. The document emphasizes practical considerations such as adjusting wire lengths for optimal SWR, noting that a dual-band dipole achieved SWR below 2:1 on both 20m and 40m, with careful adjustment bringing it under 1.5:1. Further, the resource describes a half-wave antenna matched with a coaxial stub, a method often referred to as the _Fuchskreis_ in German amateur radio circles, to transform the high feedpoint impedance to 50 Ohms. This monoband solution, for a 20m application, uses a stub length of **2.98m** (0.216 lambda multiplied by coax velocity factor) and a shorted stub of approximately 48cm. The coaxial stub design is highlighted for its resilience to ground proximity, allowing it to be rolled up or laid on the ground with minimal SWR impact, making it highly suitable for portable QRP operations.

Ten essential tips and truisms for understanding HF antenna: Non-resonant wire dipole antennas fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function effectively as multiband antennas, as detailed in "The Classic Multiband Dipole Antenna" by WB8IMY in March 2004 QST. Coaxial cable, unlike balanced parallel-wire feed lines, can cause RF to travel on the outer shield braid, leading to RF feedback to the station; a 1:1 balun at the dipole center can mitigate this by isolating the unbalanced coaxial feed line. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and directing RF energy, with beam antennas concentrating power in a specific direction, and wire antennas also exhibiting shaped radiation patterns. An antenna tuner's primary role is to match the transceiver's 50-ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, allowing modern transceivers to deliver full power. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (like the Windom) can be used, though they often necessitate an antenna tuner and a counterpoise or radial network. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent or inclined, which affects feed point impedance and may require SWR experimentation with coaxial feed. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength require an efficient ground system, typically comprising elevated or buried radial wires, with more radials generally leading to better efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee antenna efficiency; an inefficient vertical antenna with a poor ground system can show a low SWR while wasting most RF as heat. Investing in high-quality, low-loss feed line, especially coaxial cable, is crucial for maximizing RF signal transfer and overall antenna system performance.

Study of the Coaxial Dipole: Just how does this thing work.

The collinear antenna, or Marconi-Franklin antenna, is an omnidirectional, high-gain antenna composed of in-phase half-wave dipoles aligned vertically. By using quarter-wave transmission line segments, it maximizes gain at a low horizon angle, outperforming a half-wave dipole. Adding segments increases gain but narrows bandwidth. A popular DIY version, the CoCo antenna, uses half-wave coaxial cable segments connected by non-radiating transmission lines. Built with stable velocity factor cables, a matching quarter-wave sleeve balun, and ferrite rings for attenuation, the antenna achieves performance comparable to commercial models.

With an emphasis on affordability and simplicity, it explains the basics without overwhelming technical details. Recommendations for coaxial cable and mounting methods are provided, offering practical solutions for effective communication. By following these instructions, novices can build a functional antenna without breaking the bank.

Demonstrates the principles of effective HF multi-band antenna systems, emphasizing the use of non-resonant antennas, understanding line attenuation, and the proper application of transmatches and baluns. The resource challenges prevalent amateur radio myths, such as the necessity of a 1:1 SWR at the antenna feedpoint and the misconception that reflected power is lost or damages equipment. It cites authorities like Jim Fisk (Ham Radio Magazine) and M. Walter Maxwell (W2U, QST's "Another Look At Reflections" series) to support its arguments, providing historical context and technical explanations for these long-held beliefs. The article details how to combine non-resonant antennas with appropriate feedlines and matching devices to achieve broad-band operation. It compares coaxial cable losses with those of balanced open-wire lines, illustrating how ladder line can significantly reduce attenuation and handle higher impedances, enabling an 80-meter dipole to operate effectively across multiple HF bands. Practical guidance is offered on transmatch operation, explaining impedance matching principles and debunking the idea that tuners merely "fool" the transmitter. It also clarifies the function and potential misapplication of baluns, particularly transformer-type baluns, in the presence of high SWR.

A distributed capacity coaxial dipole antenna. The antenna is very broadbanded with a very flat swr on all band when setup of the antenna is done at the proper lenght and height.

Operating a ham station often involves encountering radio frequency interference (RFI), RF feedback, or RF burns, which are frequently misattributed to poor equipment grounding. This resource meticulously dissects these assumptions, asserting that RF grounds on the operating desk often merely mask more significant system flaws. It identifies five primary causes for RF problems, including antenna system design flaws, proximity of the antenna to the operating position, DC power supply ground loops, equipment design defects, and poorly installed connectors or defective cables. The content emphasizes that issues like "hot cabinets" or changes in SWR when connecting a ground indicate substantial RF flowing over wiring or cabinets, a phenomenon known as common-mode current. The article provides detailed explanations of common-mode current generation, particularly from single-wire fed antennas like longwires, random wires, and OCF dipoles, which inherently present high levels of RF in the shack. It also illustrates how vertical antennas, lacking a perfect ground system, can excite feed lines with significant common-mode current. Through simulations, the author demonstrates how a dipole without a proper _balun_ can cause RF problems at the operating desk, showing current patterns and voltage distributions on feed line shields. The discussion extends to the proper application of _RF isolators_ and _ferrite beads_, clarifying their role in modifying common-mode impedance on cable shields and cautioning against their use as a band-aid for fundamental system defects. The resource advocates for correcting the actual source of RF problems, such as antenna system issues or poor connector mounting, rather than relying on internal shack grounding or isolators. It highlights that properly functioning two-conductor feed lines, like coaxial or open-wire lines, should result in minimal RF levels at the operating position, even without a desk RF ground. The author shares personal experience, noting that his stations since the late 1970s have operated without RF grounds at the desks, relying instead on proper antenna system design and feed line integrity.

This dipole is composed by a coaxial structure and non-folded dipole made from two open conductive cylinders, and benefits from the stub compensation of a folded dipole by passing an insulated wire through the axis and connecting it to the ends of both limbs. By G4CQM

This web article details the construction of a 4-meter band coaxial dipole antenna, designed for operation between **70.000 MHz and 70.500 MHz**. The resource provides a bill of materials and step-by-step assembly instructions for a half-wave dipole constructed from _RG-58_ coaxial cable. The design specifies a direct 50 ohm feedpoint impedance, eliminating the need for an external matching network. Construction photographs illustrate the stripping and soldering processes for the coaxial cable elements, ensuring proper electrical connection and physical integrity. The article includes specific dimensions for the radiating elements, derived from calculations for the 70 MHz band. The project outlines the physical dimensions required for resonance at 70 MHz, with the outer braid forming one half and the inner conductor forming the other. The feedline connection is directly to the coaxial dipole's center, maintaining a 50 ohm characteristic impedance. While the article does not present SWR plots or VNA sweeps, it focuses on the mechanical construction and dimensional accuracy for achieving a functional 4-meter dipole. The design is intended for fixed station use, with no specific mention of polarization or height above ground, but implies a standard horizontal orientation for dipole operation. The folded dipole antenna, often claimed to offer increased bandwidth and a close match to 300-ohm line, is examined in detail. This analysis challenges several prevalent myths, including the assertion that a folded dipole inherently provides wider bandwidth than a thin wire dipole on a single band. The article clarifies that any bandwidth improvement primarily results from the antenna's increased thickness, not from stub effects, folding, or higher feedline impedance. It also addresses the misconception that a folded dipole is an effective multiband antenna, explaining its poor performance on even harmonics where it presents a near dead short. Further discussion refutes the idea that SWR variations are less with changes in antenna length or frequency compared to a regular coax-fed dipole. The resource demonstrates that SWR variations are essentially similar, with folded dipole impedance ranging from approximately 200 to 300 ohms, leading to comparable SWR levels. It also corrects the belief that balanced line feed inherently offers low loss at high SWR, emphasizing that loss is primarily related to the physical characteristics of the transmission line rather than its balanced nature. Modeling results are presented, comparing a folded dipole with 300-ohm and 200-ohm feed lines against regular dipoles fed with 50-ohm and 75-ohm coaxial cable, and a single #14 insulated wire dipole. The data shows negligible differences in 2:1 VSWR bandwidth between folded and regular dipole systems when effective wire diameter is constant, reinforcing the argument that thickness is the dominant factor in bandwidth.

Sort of similar to the one of the 6m omni. Instead of using twin-lead, this design makes use of a more or less regular double bazooka antenna (coaxial dipole). Your attention shall be drawn to the available standart literature, such as Rothammel. In order to "compute" the dimension, Karl Rothammel mentioned that the total length of the dipole shall be 95% of the free-space wavelength. The short-circuit bridges (closing the folded dipole) are to be placed at a distance-fraction being equal to the velocity factor of the coax cable used, which will be 66% using RG-58 or RG174.

The resource, "Conventional Use of Transmission Line," meticulously details the operational principles of transmission lines, emphasizing the Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) mode of energy transfer. It clarifies that for a line to function purely as a transmission line, all currents must be confined internally, with external fields ideally zero. The discussion differentiates between balanced and unbalanced lines, asserting that while both require equal and opposite currents within the conductors, the key distinction lies in the voltage relationship of each conductor to the surrounding environment. It highlights that a good antenna pattern does not inherently confirm proper feeder balance, and that common-mode currents can lead to RF in the shack and increased noise levels, even without pattern distortion. The article further explains that a transmission line can become a radiating conductor if energy is applied in a non-TEM mode, leading to common-mode issues. It cites classic texts like Jordan and Balmain's "_Electromagnetic Waves and Radiating Systems_" and Kraus's "_Antennas_" to support its definitions of TEM mode operation. The content also explores non-transmission line applications of parallel or concentric conductors, such as _coaxial dipoles_ and _folded dipoles_, which intentionally operate in non-TEM modes for antenna functionality. The author, _W8JI_, stresses that simply measuring equal currents is insufficient to confirm a balanced feeder; phase and voltage balance to ground are equally critical.
