This resource details the fundamental aspects of deploying longwire antennas, emphasizing ease of construction and installation for shortwave listening (SWL) and broadcast reception. It covers wire gauge selection, suggesting 14 to 24 AWG for general use, with heavier gauges (14-20 AWG) for permanent outdoor installations. Guidance is provided for various deployment scenarios, including indoor setups where the wire can be run around a room, temporary outdoor installations from balconies using light 18-24 AWG wire, and permanent outdoor configurations requiring higher placement and slack for tree movement. Feeding methods are discussed, recommending coaxial cable (50-75 ohms) to mitigate man-made interference, with instructions for connecting only the center conductor to the longwire. Safety precautions are highlighted, particularly avoiding contact with power lines and conductive materials, and managing static electricity buildup by unplugging the antenna after use and bleeding off charges before connection. The article also advises against using outdoor longwires during thunderstorms or snowstorms due to static and lightning risks. Optimal height considerations are presented, advocating for the highest safe placement, ideally a couple of feet above underlying structures, to maintain free air space. The text mentions a personal setup with one end at a roof peak (20 feet) and the other at a 17-foot mast, illustrating practical deployment without strict height requirements beyond safety and clearance.

The article details antenna tuning procedures, emphasizing SWR measurement and adjustment for both mobile and base station setups. It explains that SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) is the ratio of transmitted power to reflected power, with high SWR indicating poor impedance match and potential damage to a transceiver's final amplifier. Specific instructions are provided for CB antennas operating between 26-27 MHz, recommending initial SWR checks on channels 1, 20, and 40 to determine if the whip needs shortening or lengthening. Adjustments should be made in small increments, approximately 1/4 inch at a time, aiming for an SWR of 1.5:1 or better. For _Ham radio_ and other antennas, the same tuning principles apply, with a strong caution regarding RF energy exposure when operating at higher power levels. The resource suggests tuning base antennas at ground or roof level before final installation to simplify adjustments. It also advises rechecking SWR after final installation to confirm no changes occurred. The _Alpha Rubicon_ resource highlights the importance of a good ground plane for mobile antennas and proper coax routing to avoid pinching or proximity to electrical wires.

The document is distinctively useful for its practical insights into large-scale antenna deployment in a field environment, offering real-world SWR measurements and anecdotal performance reports from CQWW contest operations. It includes numerous photographs illustrating the construction process, the team members, and the finished antenna structure, providing visual context to the technical details.

End-Fed Half-Wave Antennas (EFHWAs) are analyzed for their utility in portable QRP operations, emphasizing their simplicity, efficiency, and predictable radiation patterns compared to other portable antenna types. The discussion contrasts EFHWAs with vertical antennas, random length wires, and center-fed dipoles, highlighting the common pitfalls of each, such as ground system dependency for verticals and feedline issues for dipoles. The article details the electrical half-wavelength calculation using the formula L (Ft) = 468/F(MHz) and explains how EFHWAs can be resonant on harmonic frequencies, enabling multiband operation. Various deployment configurations are presented, including the inverted L, inverted Vee, sloping wire, and vertical setups, each with specific advantages for radiation angle and polarization. For instance, a vertical EFHWA offers a low angle of radiation suitable for DX contacts without requiring an extensive ground system. The resource also addresses the counterpoise requirements, suggesting a quarter-wavelength wire or connection to a metallic structure for decoupling. A schematic diagram for a simple parallel-tuned circuit tuner, based on the _Rainbow Bridge/Tuner_ design, is provided, detailing component values for 30 and 40 meters, including a 6 microhenry toroidal inductor and a 20-100 picofarad mica compression capacitor. The tuner's adjustment process for SWR matching is also outlined.

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

W1ZY's 40-meter **Moxon** antenna project details nine months of experimentation, culminating in a reversible array built from No. 12 insulated wire. The design incorporates two RF current baluns and a unique two-wire element construction, where each element consists of two parallel wires spaced 3 inches apart. The resource provides specific dimensions for the first prototype, including A=50.98', B=7.87', C=1.25', D=9.3', and E=18.42', optimized for 7.050 MHz CW operation. It thoroughly explains the construction of custom two-wire insulators from Plexiglas semi-rods and the critical pre-tensioning process required to maintain wire separation and array integrity. The author, Bill, emphasizes the antenna's exceptional receive performance, noting a 30-35 dB front-to-back ratio, which allows for significant signal rejection from the rear. While the Moxon offers 5-6 dB gain on transmit, its primary advantage lies in its ability to radically reduce rear-facing signals on receive, a characteristic Bill believes is often overlooked in transmit-focused comparisons. The guide details a flexible tuning method using removable tail-end jumpers, enabling adjustments to both tail-end and parallel dimensions without re-soldering the feed point, a technique refined over three prototypes.

A 37.6-meter Morgain antenna design provides dual-band operation on 80 and 160 meters without traps. The antenna uses 1.5 mm² stranded copper wire with vinyl insulation, commonly found as domestic electrical wire. Tuning involves adjusting lateral jumper wires for the 80-meter band, with initial positions 30 cm from the arm ends, yielding 3635–3715 kHz resonance with SWR below 1.5:1. For 160 meters, a straight wire length of 18.80 meters per arm is critical, achieving 1840–1850 kHz resonance with SWR below 1.1:1. The Morgain antenna exhibits a 50-ohm feed-point impedance, allowing direct connection of 50-ohm coaxial cable like RG-8X, which handles approximately 500 watts. Spacers and the central plate are constructed from 1 mm thick green fiberglass laminate, with spacers measuring 11 cm and installed every 1.90 meters. The central plate is 11 × 11 cm, designed to secure the coaxial cable mechanically. End supports utilize 3–6 mm thick bakelite terminal spacers, tensioned with nylon ropes.

Demonstrates the construction of a double bazooka antenna, detailing its historical development from MIT radar applications in the 1940s to amateur radio use in the 1950s. It explains the antenna's operation as a 1/2 lambda coaxial section with open-ended stubs, acting as a shortened quarter-wave stub at resonance, presenting high impedance. The resource provides formulas for calculating total length (LT = 140/Freq) and coaxial length (LC = 99/Freq) for RG58 CU, along with specific instructions for cutting and soldering components, including a central insulator and end wires. Compares the double bazooka to a standard dipole, highlighting its 98% efficiency and twice the bandwidth. It claims a +3.6dB gain over a dipole (dipole gain 2.15dB) and a 6dB reduction in reception noise due to its closed design, which also minimizes harmonics and TVI. The antenna handles over 1.5kW (2kW PEP) without performance degradation and is effective for DX with a low radiation angle, especially when configured as an inverted V between 90° and 120° with ends 2 meters above ground. It eliminates the need for a balun and can be fed directly with 50-ohm coaxial cable.

Ten essential tips and truisms for understanding HF antenna: Non-resonant wire dipole antennas fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function effectively as multiband antennas, as detailed in "The Classic Multiband Dipole Antenna" by WB8IMY in March 2004 QST. Coaxial cable, unlike balanced parallel-wire feed lines, can cause RF to travel on the outer shield braid, leading to RF feedback to the station; a 1:1 balun at the dipole center can mitigate this by isolating the unbalanced coaxial feed line. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and directing RF energy, with beam antennas concentrating power in a specific direction, and wire antennas also exhibiting shaped radiation patterns. An antenna tuner's primary role is to match the transceiver's 50-ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, allowing modern transceivers to deliver full power. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (like the Windom) can be used, though they often necessitate an antenna tuner and a counterpoise or radial network. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent or inclined, which affects feed point impedance and may require SWR experimentation with coaxial feed. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength require an efficient ground system, typically comprising elevated or buried radial wires, with more radials generally leading to better efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee antenna efficiency; an inefficient vertical antenna with a poor ground system can show a low SWR while wasting most RF as heat. Investing in high-quality, low-loss feed line, especially coaxial cable, is crucial for maximizing RF signal transfer and overall antenna system performance.

Accessing this interface provides entry to one of the largest databases for amateur radio voice repeaters, encompassing over 8000 entries from more than 60 countries. The resource supports both desktop and mobile access, with a default display based on browser type, or forced via a "force" parameter (e.g., relais.dl3el.de?force=mobile). Users input a QTH-locator to find local repeater information. The database integrates FM-Funknetz servers and hotspots, potentially creating duplicate entries but ensuring new FM-Funknetz repeaters are immediately displayed. DMR repeater information, including status and talkgroup configurations, is sourced directly from DMR+ / ircDDB and Brandmeister systems, with real-time updates for active and default talkgroups. C4FM/Wires-X installations, particularly MMDVM-based gateways not listed in Yaesu's database, are identified through Brandmeister dashboard descriptions, marked with "W-x" or "W-x#MMDVM" for manual entries. D-Star repeater data from ircddb or QuadNet2 is also incorporated, with entries marked (i), (o), or (d) for manual additions. An APRS interface allows searching by callsign, using Sassan, DL3NCK's database, and offers a mobile-friendly, auto-refreshing display that follows an APRS station. Output data can be generated in GPX format for offline smartphone maps or CSV for spreadsheet applications. The database also attempts to determine valid repeater offsets based on IARU region and frequency, indicated by a "." after the frequency.

Operating a ham station often involves encountering radio frequency interference (RFI), RF feedback, or RF burns, which are frequently misattributed to poor equipment grounding. This resource meticulously dissects these assumptions, asserting that RF grounds on the operating desk often merely mask more significant system flaws. It identifies five primary causes for RF problems, including antenna system design flaws, proximity of the antenna to the operating position, DC power supply ground loops, equipment design defects, and poorly installed connectors or defective cables. The content emphasizes that issues like "hot cabinets" or changes in SWR when connecting a ground indicate substantial RF flowing over wiring or cabinets, a phenomenon known as common-mode current. The article provides detailed explanations of common-mode current generation, particularly from single-wire fed antennas like longwires, random wires, and OCF dipoles, which inherently present high levels of RF in the shack. It also illustrates how vertical antennas, lacking a perfect ground system, can excite feed lines with significant common-mode current. Through simulations, the author demonstrates how a dipole without a proper _balun_ can cause RF problems at the operating desk, showing current patterns and voltage distributions on feed line shields. The discussion extends to the proper application of _RF isolators_ and _ferrite beads_, clarifying their role in modifying common-mode impedance on cable shields and cautioning against their use as a band-aid for fundamental system defects. The resource advocates for correcting the actual source of RF problems, such as antenna system issues or poor connector mounting, rather than relying on internal shack grounding or isolators. It highlights that properly functioning two-conductor feed lines, like coaxial or open-wire lines, should result in minimal RF levels at the operating position, even without a desk RF ground. The author shares personal experience, noting that his stations since the late 1970s have operated without RF grounds at the desks, relying instead on proper antenna system design and feed line integrity.
