Sixty-four years of operating experience inform Glynn E. "Buck" Rogers Sr., K4ABT's, insights into the J-Pole antenna, which he describes as a direct descendant of the _Windom_ or _ZEPP_. His first article on the J-Pole appeared in HRC magazine in 1958, and he has since published numerous pieces in publications like CQ Magazine, consistently referring to the J-Pole as a Windom with a folded-back short section forming the parasitic element. He emphasizes that both the Windom and J-Pole are powerful multi-band antennas, performing exceptionally well at harmonics of their fundamental design frequency, and advocates for 50-ohm coaxial cable with a _BALUN_ at the feed-point to avoid RF energy losses. K4ABT details the J-Pole's features, noting its ease of erection, lack of radials, low angle radiation, greater bandwidth, and immunity to terrestrial noise. He highlights its suitability for local nets and distant repeaters, claiming more gain and durability than most ground planes, and its ability to meet stealth antenna requirements. The guide provides specific dimensions for 2-meter (145.000 to 146.000 MHz) and 6-meter (50.500 to 51.500 MHz) J-Pole antennas, including measurements for the long driven element, short tuning stub, and spacing. The construction section illustrates a modified feed technique using an SO-239 chassis-mount coax connector soldered into a copper tee, deviating from the usual hose clamp method. The author also discusses the use of _EMT_ (electrical metallic thin-wall conduit) as an alternative to copper in earlier days. He cautions against building a 75-meter J-Pole due to its impractical length, reinforcing the antenna's optimal application for VHF and UHF bands.

Demonstrates the construction of **magnetic loop antennas**, detailing both multi-turn and single-turn designs. It covers a 30-inch diameter multi-turn loop for 80 meters, based on a February 1996 QST article, and an octagon single-turn loop made from 15mm copper tube with a 4.8-meter circumference, operating from 7 MHz to 14 MHz. The document also presents a smaller 800mm diameter loop for 14 MHz to 28 MHz, emphasizing the importance of high-voltage tuning capacitors. Covers the design and construction of custom **butterfly capacitors** and piston capacitors, including a split stator capacitor with 140 pF capacitance and a 6000 Volt rating, and a butterfly capacitor with 5-65 pF and 7200 Volt rating. It explains why butterfly capacitors are preferred over split stator types for high power applications due to lower losses and direct series connection of rotors, reducing resistive losses from wiper contacts. Material recommendations include clear PVC for plates and brass or stainless steel for non-magnetic hardware. Addresses practical considerations such as feeding the loop with a shielded 1/5 Faraday loop made from RG213 or RG8 coax, achieving VSWR 1.1 across bands, and optimizing its placement 180° from the capacitor. It also discusses mechanical joint resistance, dissimilar metal oxidation prevention using Vaseline, and a simple method for determining radiation angle with a TL-light tube. The guide includes diagrams for rotor, stator, and end plate construction.

This design offers high gain, nearly 90% efficiency, and robust resistance to high SWR, allowing 30-second key-down operation into an open circuit without damage. A critical aspect is the precise adjustment of the MOSFET gate bias via a 10K trimmer pot, _R10_, to maintain quiescent current between 5 and 10 mA, preventing thermal runaway inherent to bipolar devices. The prototype was constructed on a _Radio Shack universal board_ and achieved immediate operational success. The design requires a 15-volt Zener diode to protect the MOSFET gate from overvoltage. Component sourcing information is provided, including specific crystal frequencies (7.040 MHz or 7.122 MHz) available from _Dan’s Small Parts & Kits_ or Doug Hendricks. The fixed frequency can be slightly adjusted with a trimmer capacitor. A complete bill of materials, including resistor values, capacitor types, toroid specifications, and transistor part numbers, is detailed, alongside a clear schematic diagram.

Selecting an appropriate antenna system for shortwave broadcasting involves evaluating various types based on performance, cost, and operational parameters. This resource details the critical specifications for broadcast antennas, including average and peak power ratings, directivity, takeoff angle (TOA), horizontal beamwidth, and gain, emphasizing that a 100-kW transmitter requires an antenna rated for 150 kW average and 400 kW peak. It clarifies that low TOA signals travel thousands of kilometers, while high TOA is for local coverage, and nearly all modern shortwave broadcast antennas are horizontally polarized. The article explores specific antenna types, such as Log-Periodic Antennas (LPAs), which offer wide frequency ranges (e.g., 2-30 MHz) and directional patterns with 11 dBi gain, costing from $20K to over $100K for multi-curtain versions. Dipole arrays, also known as curtain antennas, are prevalent in international broadcasting, featuring steerable beams (±15° and ±30°) and mode-switching capabilities to alter TOA, with high/low pairs costing over $1 million. Fan dipoles are noted for omnidirectional patterns, smaller size, and lower cost for low-power applications, while rhombics, though simple, require resistive termination and incur several dB of I2R losses. Balun considerations are crucial, as most communications baluns are not rated for the higher average and peak powers of AM broadcast transmitters. Modern shortwave antennas utilize durable materials like Alumoweld wire rope for radiators and support elements, avoiding copper, fiberglass, or materials prone to stretching or deterioration. Feeder systems for high-power stations often require tapered-line baluns to convert 50-ohm unbalanced power to 300-ohm balanced for connection to the antenna.

Examines the rationale behind L. B. Cebik, W4RNL's, consistent use of dBi for specifying antenna gain in his modeling work, contrasting it with the common practice of using dBd. The article meticulously defines decibels as relative power measurements and introduces the theoretical _isotropic radiator_ as the baseline for dBi, highlighting its utility as an unchanging constant for universal antenna comparison. It details how maximum gain in dBi allows for straightforward numerical comparisons between antennas, while also emphasizing the importance of considering other factors like horizontal beamwidth, vertical beamwidth, and elevation angle of maximum radiation for a complete performance picture. The resource then critically analyzes the concept of dBd, categorizing it into _dBd-I_ (ideal dipole), _dBd-RM_ (real modeled dipole), and _dBd-RR_ (real range dipole), exposing the ambiguities and inconsistencies inherent in these varied definitions. W4RNL argues that the lack of standardized protocols for dBd measurements, particularly in real-world test ranges, makes direct comparisons problematic without extensive supplementary data on test conditions and comparison antennas. He illustrates how these complexities often obscure rather than clarify antenna performance. Ultimately, the article advocates for dBi as the more robust and unambiguous standard for antenna modelers, especially when comparing diverse antenna types where a dipole is not a relevant benchmark. It acknowledges that range testers may continue to use dBd-RR due to practical limitations, but stresses the critical need for detailed test protocols to ensure meaningful results. The discussion underscores the ongoing challenge of correlating real-world antenna measurements with theoretical modeling.

PA3FWM's software defined radio (SDR) page documents his extensive hardware and software development efforts between 2004 and 2009. Initial experiments utilized a direct conversion receiver with 90-degree phase difference, feeding a PC soundcard at 48 kHz sample rate, covering 24 kHz of spectrum around a 7080.5 kHz local oscillator. This setup, similar to AC50G's QEX 2002 article, allowed for basic I/Q signal processing to distinguish signals above and below the LO frequency. Limitations included fixed crystal frequencies, 16-bit dynamic range, and narrow bandwidth. Subsequent hardware iterations aimed for enhanced performance, incorporating external 24-bit ADCs with 192 kHz sample rates, connected via 10 Mbit/s Ethernet. A **MC145170-based PLL** and programmable octave divider provided a 58 kHz to 30 MHz tuning range. The **Tayloe mixer** was employed, with differential outputs feeding a PCM1804 ADC. An ATmega32 microcontroller handled serial data conversion to Ethernet frames, though without CRC calculation due to processing constraints. Later designs integrated AD7760 2.5 Msamples/second ADCs and a Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA, enabling direct reception of 0-1 MHz spectrum and eventually 2.5 MHz bandwidth across the shortwave spectrum. Software was refactored to use an initial 8192 non-windowed FFT for efficient high-bandwidth processing. The project culminated in a two-way QSO on 21 MHz using the developed hardware and software, demonstrating transmit capabilities with a D/A converter. The system exhibited a 2.5 MHz wide spectrum display and a zoomed 19 kHz display, capturing signals like ionospheric chirp sounders and RTTY contest activity. Challenges included noise leakage from digital circuitry and cooling for high-power dissipation components.

The Q-signal **QRP** signifies a request to reduce power, and in amateur radio, it defines operating with 5 watts or less for CW and 10 watts or less for SSB. This article addresses common inquiries from new hams regarding the practice, its benefits, and implementation methods. It explains how a 5-watt QRP signal, compared to a 100-watt signal, typically results in only a 13dB drop in signal strength, equating to about two S-units, still providing solid copy under most conditions. Hams choose QRP for various reasons, including seeking a greater challenge in DXing or contesting, reducing band interference, or enabling portable field operations with lightweight, battery-efficient equipment. A modern single-band CW transceiver, key, and antenna can fit into a pocket, offering receiver performance comparable to commercial rigs and extended operation on a small battery. This portability facilitates operations in remote locations where higher-power setups are impractical. Operating QRP can involve simply reducing power on an existing commercial HF rig or building a dedicated QRP transceiver from a kit, such as the **Wilderness Radio SST** with its 2-watt output and 15mA receive current draw. While SSB is viable, CW remains the most popular and efficient mode for QRP due to its superior signal-to-noise ratio. The article lists common QRP calling frequencies across 160m through 10m bands for both CW and SSB, and highlights organizations like QRP ARCI and NorCal that support the QRP community.

This article presents a technical investigation into spurious emissions from the Yaesu FT-847 transceiver when operating on the 70MHz (4-meter) band. The author discovered significant problems with both factory "UK spec" and modified units. Spectrum analysis revealed that when transmitting at 70.2MHz, the radio produces numerous spurious signals, with the most prominent emission at 45.6MHz measuring only 3dB below the fundamental frequency. The study also documents poor power efficiency on 4m (10.3% at 30W output) compared to 6m operation (23.5% at 30W). Tests verified that jumper configurations had no effect on filter selection. The author warns that using these radios on 4m may violate license conditions due to excessive spurious emissions.

A DIY project details the construction of a modular QRP CW transceiver specifically designed for the **20-meter band**. The design is segmented into three distinct modules—VFO, Receiver, and Transmitter—allowing for phased construction and independent testing. The VFO circuit, capable of operating as a conversion VFO or a free oscillator, provides a frequency span of approximately _70 KHz_ (2.433 to 2.510 MHz) with a 4V pp output level, utilizing a Colpitts FET oscillator and buffer. The receiver employs a classic superheterodyne architecture with MOSFETs in the front end and mixer for improved overload immunity, incorporating a 4-crystal ladder filter with a 600 Hz bandpass and an LM386 audio power amplifier delivering about 1W into an 8-ohm load. The transmitter section uses frequency conversion with an NE602 mixer to achieve 14 MHz operation, featuring a power broadband stage capable of 4-5W output into a dummy load, and includes a double Pi filter for signal cleanliness. The resource provides detailed component lists, tuning instructions for each module, and 1:1 scale PCB layouts for single-sided boards.

The UK amateur radio licensing scheme features three distinct tiers: Foundation, Intermediate, and Full, each granting specific operating privileges. For instance, the **Foundation Licence** permits a maximum of 10 watts output power on most allocated bands, with restricted band access. The Intermediate Licence allows up to 50 watts, while the **Full Licence** grants access to the maximum UK legal power limits and all available amateur radio band allocations. UK call sign prefixes and formats provide insights into the licensee's class and the approximate issuance date. For example, M3, M6, and M7 prefixes with three letters denote Foundation Licences issued from 2002, 2008, and 2018 respectively. Intermediate Licences, often starting with "2E0" or "2E1" followed by three letters, were issued from 1991 onwards. Full Licences encompass a broader range of prefixes like G2, G3, G4, G0, and M0, with varying letter counts indicating different historical license classes and issuance periods, such as G3 plus three letters issued between 1946 and 1971. Special prefixes like GB are reserved for repeaters, beacons, data mailboxes, and special event stations, with specific numerical sequences (e.g., GB3 for repeaters, GB7 for data repeaters/mailboxes) indicating their function. Optional prefixes such as GC, GD, GI, GM, and GW denote specific UK countries (e.g., Wales, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England) and can also signify club stations.

The Collins TRC-75 autotune linear amplifier, owned by JF2SVU, is presented with a focus on its internal modifications. This QRO amplifier utilizes three 4CX250 tubes in parallel for its final stage, delivering 1 KW output power. Notably, the amplifier achieves full power with only 100 mW of RF input, a characteristic often associated with Collins designs. The original 400 Hz power supply has been converted for easier shack integration, and the entire RF and power supply sections have been rehoused into a compact, clean enclosure. The control unit, positioned above the amplifier, features three meters for individual vacuum tube IP monitoring and a multi-meter on the right. A dedicated 7 MHz receiver, recently completed, is also part of this integrated system. The autotune functionality means the main amplifier unit only requires connections for power, control, and coaxial cables, simplifying its operation. Key components like the 4CX250 tubes and NF capacitors are visible, along with the gearing mechanism for the final tank circuit. A timer and relay system manages high-voltage delay and cooling fan off-delay, although the cooling fan's airflow is noted as somewhat insufficient. A central volume control, which experienced a contact issue, is also highlighted.

The GW3YDX Super Moxon antenna design improves upon the standard Moxon Rectangle by incorporating additional directors in a rectangular configuration, yielding enhanced directivity and gain. For the 6m version, modeling with 4NEC2 and EZNEC+ indicated a 3dB gain increase and a 26.5dB front-to-back ratio, with VSWR below 1.5:1 between 50.0 and 50.3MHz when optimized for 50.1MHz. This design achieves a narrower -3dB power point beamwidth of 60° compared to the original Moxon's 80°, contributing to better QRM rejection. The boom length for the enhanced design is just under 2m, approximately double the original Moxon's, with no increase in wingspan. Construction details include tubing lengths for 6m, 4m, and 2m versions, with specific dimensions provided for elements A through M, measured to tubing centers. For instance, the 6m version uses a 2160mm element A and a 2140mm element H. The design maintains a 50-ohm feed impedance, with practical models showing VSWR plots consistent with simulations after minor adjustments to driven element lengths. The article also references Moxgen software for initial Moxon parameter calculation and NEC/EZNEC model generation. The 2m Super Moxon version measures approximately 30" x 25", demonstrating the compact nature of the design across different VHF bands. The article highlights the antenna's performance in real-world DX contacts on 6m, achieving contacts with over 80 stations in the USA from a modest QTH.
