Demonstrates the construction of **magnetic loop antennas**, detailing both multi-turn and single-turn designs. It covers a 30-inch diameter multi-turn loop for 80 meters, based on a February 1996 QST article, and an octagon single-turn loop made from 15mm copper tube with a 4.8-meter circumference, operating from 7 MHz to 14 MHz. The document also presents a smaller 800mm diameter loop for 14 MHz to 28 MHz, emphasizing the importance of high-voltage tuning capacitors. Covers the design and construction of custom **butterfly capacitors** and piston capacitors, including a split stator capacitor with 140 pF capacitance and a 6000 Volt rating, and a butterfly capacitor with 5-65 pF and 7200 Volt rating. It explains why butterfly capacitors are preferred over split stator types for high power applications due to lower losses and direct series connection of rotors, reducing resistive losses from wiper contacts. Material recommendations include clear PVC for plates and brass or stainless steel for non-magnetic hardware. Addresses practical considerations such as feeding the loop with a shielded 1/5 Faraday loop made from RG213 or RG8 coax, achieving VSWR 1.1 across bands, and optimizing its placement 180° from the capacitor. It also discusses mechanical joint resistance, dissimilar metal oxidation prevention using Vaseline, and a simple method for determining radiation angle with a TL-light tube. The guide includes diagrams for rotor, stator, and end plate construction.

The **Extended Double Zepp** (EDZ) antenna, a simple wire design, is presented as a means to achieve 3-4 dB of gain on 10 meters, with an overall length of just 43 feet. This resource, authored by WB3HUZ, details several gain antennas suitable for the 29 MHz AM segment, all modeled using EZNEC software at 30 feet above ground. Other designs include a compact rectangular loop, offering more gain than the EDZ and a lower take-off angle, and the **Lazy H**, a bidirectional antenna providing 6 dB gain, which is also workable on 20, 17, 15, and 12 meters. The Bisquare, a diamond-shaped open-top loop, is also featured, providing approximately 4 dB gain and requiring only a single support. These designs are primarily fed with ladder line or open-wire line to simplify matching, though a coax feed option for the EDZ is shown for 10-meter-only operation. The Lazy H, for instance, requires about 16 feet of open-wire line for its half-wavelength elements spaced a half-wavelength apart. An enhanced EDZ Lazy H variant is also discussed, achieving an additional 1-2 dB gain by extending element length to 1.28 wavelengths and increasing spacing to 0.64-0.75 wavelengths. The Bisquare, while primarily a 10-meter antenna, can be adapted for 20 meters by closing the top connection.

This PDF article from April 2001 QST details the construction of the "NJQRP Squirt," a reduced-size 80-meter inverted-V dipole antenna. The resource provides a general construction sketch, a photograph of the assembled antenna, and specific dimensions for PC-board insulators. The antenna consists of two wire legs, each approximately **34 feet long**, separated by 90 degrees, fed at the center. It is designed for operation on 80 meters (3.5-4.0 MHz) as a quarter-wavelength antenna, requiring a low-loss feedline and an external antenna tuner due to its non-resonant feedpoint impedance. Construction utilizes readily available materials, including 1/16-inch glass-epoxy PC board for end and center insulators, and #20 or #22 insulated hookup wire for the elements. The feedline specified is 300-ohm TV flat ribbon line, with a note on potential trimming for tuner compatibility. N2CX reports the antenna's center should be elevated to at least **20 feet**, with ends no lower than seven feet above ground, resulting in a ground footprint of approximately 50 feet wide. The design prioritizes NVIS propagation for local 80-meter contacts. DXZone Focus: PDF Article | 80m Inverted-V Dipole | Construction Notes | 34 ft element length

A 1/4 wavelength resonator design for dual-band VHF/UHF operation is presented, focusing on a robust mobile antenna construction. The design prioritizes stability against environmental influences over raw gain, making it suitable for general use rather than marginal signal areas. It details the antenna's two sections: a UHF-resonant lower conductor and an upper coil functioning as an RF choke for UHF and an inductance enhancer for VHF, forming a resonant circuit. Detailed mechanical structure and material considerations are provided, including the use of a PL-259 plug base, 2mm copper rod, and PVC faucet tube for the coil form. The guide outlines a precise construction procedure, from soldering the copper rod to the PL-259 to winding the 22 SWG laminated wire for the VHF section. Tuning involves careful cutting of the UHF section and adjusting the coil length and pitch for VHF, using a reflectometer and temporary ground planes. Furthermore, the resource describes converting the mobile antenna for base station application by constructing a dual-band ground plane system. This involves using electrical conduit, EMT connectors, SO-239 sockets, and a 4-inch round-pan with threaded stainless steel rods as ground elements. Practical test results indicate optimal lengths of **70mm** for UHF and **350mm** for VHF ground elements, with a recommendation to cut rods with _30mm_ extra length for fine-tuning.

The HB9ABX mobile HF antenna, developed by _Felix Meyer_, offers a high-performance alternative to commercial mobile antennas for 80 through 10 meters. Constructed from fiberglass rods and enamelled copper wire, this design incorporates a loading coil with multiple taps, allowing for band-specific tuning. The article provides detailed instructions for winding the coil, connecting the antenna elements, and integrating it with a vehicle's chassis ground. Field tests conducted at 100W consistently showed the HB9ABX antenna outperforming a HUSTLER mobile antenna by up to **10 dB** (1 S-point) and a YAESU ATAS-100/120 by **18 dB** (2-4 S-points) across distances from 5 km to 1000 km. The design emphasizes a robust ground connection and the use of an antenna tuner, such as an _MFJ-901B_, for optimal SWR on all bands, particularly 40 and 80 meters. Initial adjustment involves setting whip length and coil tap positions to achieve resonance without a tuner, followed by fine-tuning with the tuner during operation. Specific measurements are provided for checking resonance on 21.0 MHz and 14.2 MHz, with precise turn counts for the lower (79 turns) and upper (120 turns) antenna sections. Safety precautions for handling fiberglass dust are also highlighted.

A 9 dB gain 70cm collinear antenna construction is detailed, utilizing eight half-wavelength sections of _RG58/U_ coaxial cable. The design incorporates specific calculations for velocity factor (0.66 for RG58/U) to determine precise element lengths, such as 223mm for a half-wavelength at 444 MHz. A quarter-wave radiating element of #16 solid wire, 169mm long, is added to the top, and a 160mm aluminum tube acts as a quarter-wave counterpoise at the feed point. RF choke baluns, constructed from three _FT50-43_ toroids, are positioned a half-wavelength from the feed point to mitigate common mode current. Assembly involves soldering the coax sections in series, followed by SWR testing during construction and final mounting within a ¾-inch PVC pipe. The article suggests using four half-wave elements for a shorter antenna, noting a potential slight increase in SWR, which can be mitigated with quarter-wave ground radials. The design principles and formulas are scalable for other VHF/UHF bands like 6m, 2m, or 1¼m, providing a versatile homebrew solution for enhanced gain.

How High should my Dipole be? Dipole Antennas and the effect of height above ground. The effectiveness of a dipole antenna is influenced by its height above ground, determined by the intended use such as DX work, local communication, directionality, omni-directionality, and feed point impedance. Through EZNEC modeling, the study evaluates a 40-meter dipole's performance at various heights, from 7 to 560 feet. Findings reveal that lower heights enhance omni-directional local communication, while higher placements favor DX work with low-angle radiation. The study emphasizes the importance of defining operational goals to optimize dipole height and performance.

Optimizing low-band signal performance for contesting and DXing often involves complex antenna systems. This resource presents the FVR Spitfire Array, a "poor man's 4-square" design specifically engineered for the 80-meter and 160-meter bands. The core content is a PowerPoint presentation originally delivered at the 1998 Dayton Hamvention, outlining the design principles and practical considerations for this phased vertical array. The FVR Spitfire Array aims to provide directional gain and improved signal-to-noise ratio on the lower HF bands without the need for a large, rotatable Yagi. The design focuses on achieving effective directivity and pattern control using vertical elements, a common approach for enhancing receive and transmit capabilities on 160m and 80m, where full-sized Yagis are impractical for many stations. The presentation likely covers construction details, phasing networks, and expected performance characteristics. Further information is provided through an additional FAQ document, addressing common questions and offering clarifications on the array's operation and implementation. This supplementary material helps operators understand nuances of the design and troubleshoot potential issues, making the project more accessible for those looking to build or adapt the FVR Spitfire Array for their own station.

This resource demonstrates how to build a compact beam antenna using readily available hardware store aluminum tubing, fitting within a 12-13 foot width. It highlights the antenna's performance characteristics, including a gain comparable to a 2-element Yagi (11+ dBi) and a front-to-back ratio exceeding 20 dB between 28.3 and 28.5 MHz, with an SWR below 2:1 across the entire band. The design emphasizes direct 50-ohm coax connection without a separate matching system, though a 1:1 choke _balun_ is recommended. The guide provides practical advice on element construction, corner fabrication using L-stock or radius-bent tubing, and the critical side-to-side length adjustment for SWR optimization. It details the feedpoint assembly using a chassis-mounting coax connector and discusses element-to-boom plate options, including spar varnished plywood or LE plastic. The author's experience with a test model on a 20-foot mast confirms stable feedpoint characteristics and excellent performance even at lower heights. The document also includes insights into the antenna's free-space azimuth patterns, noting a broad forward lobe and significant front-to-back rejection. It contrasts the Moxon with traditional Yagis, positioning it as an effective, home-buildable alternative for compact sites or _Field Day_ operations, particularly beneficial during periods of increased 10-meter activity.

WB2VUO presents a practical examination of effective HF mobile antennas, focusing on the inherent efficiency challenges encountered on the lower bands, specifically 160, 80, and 40 Meters. The resource delves into the necessity of loading coils for mobile operation below 21 MHz, where full-sized antennas are impractical. It contrasts base-loaded and center-loaded designs, noting that base-loaded antennas are simpler for the average ham to construct but offer lower efficiency compared to center-loaded configurations. The author provides specific data for an 8-foot whip, detailing its electrical length and _radiation resistance_ across various HF bands, from **0.08 ohms** on 160 Meters to **16.1 ohms** on 12 Meters. This data highlights the extremely low radiation resistance on lower frequencies, which significantly impacts feedpoint impedance due to ground and feedline losses. The discussion includes practical considerations for feedpoint impedance, noting that a typical 8-foot whip on 10 Meters might present 30-45 ohms, allowing for acceptable SWR without an ATU. Construction sketches illustrate both base-loaded and center-loaded mobile antennas, with advice on material selection like galvanized steel for rugged bottom sections. The article also includes coil value charts from the _ARRL Mobile Manual_ for both base and center loading, emphasizing the importance of using large diameter wire to minimize losses and suggesting capacity hats to reduce coil inductance and improve performance on 160-40 Meters.

Selecting an appropriate antenna system for shortwave broadcasting involves evaluating various types based on performance, cost, and operational parameters. This resource details the critical specifications for broadcast antennas, including average and peak power ratings, directivity, takeoff angle (TOA), horizontal beamwidth, and gain, emphasizing that a 100-kW transmitter requires an antenna rated for 150 kW average and 400 kW peak. It clarifies that low TOA signals travel thousands of kilometers, while high TOA is for local coverage, and nearly all modern shortwave broadcast antennas are horizontally polarized. The article explores specific antenna types, such as Log-Periodic Antennas (LPAs), which offer wide frequency ranges (e.g., 2-30 MHz) and directional patterns with 11 dBi gain, costing from $20K to over $100K for multi-curtain versions. Dipole arrays, also known as curtain antennas, are prevalent in international broadcasting, featuring steerable beams (±15° and ±30°) and mode-switching capabilities to alter TOA, with high/low pairs costing over $1 million. Fan dipoles are noted for omnidirectional patterns, smaller size, and lower cost for low-power applications, while rhombics, though simple, require resistive termination and incur several dB of I2R losses. Balun considerations are crucial, as most communications baluns are not rated for the higher average and peak powers of AM broadcast transmitters. Modern shortwave antennas utilize durable materials like Alumoweld wire rope for radiators and support elements, avoiding copper, fiberglass, or materials prone to stretching or deterioration. Feeder systems for high-power stations often require tapered-line baluns to convert 50-ohm unbalanced power to 300-ohm balanced for connection to the antenna.

This resource details the construction and feeding of a vertical Moxon antenna specifically designed for the 20-meter band (14 MHz). It addresses the common issue of impedance variations at the feed point of vertical dipoles and Moxons, which typically requires the coax to exit at a specific angle (45-90 degrees) to maintain a good 50-ohm match. The presented solution involves opening the lower corner of the fed element and utilizing a transformer for impedance matching, simplifying installation and improving SWR. The alternative feeding method provides a stable match, eliminating the need for precise coax routing to achieve a low SWR. This design offers a practical improvement over conventional vertical Moxon feeding, making deployment significantly easier. The author, SM0DTK, confirms the efficacy of this setup, noting its fine performance and reduced installation complexity compared to traditional methods.

The K5OE 2-meter vertical mobile antenna design, detailed in this resource, employs a 3/8-wavelength vertical section complemented by four shortened radials, forming an off-center-fed vertical dipole. This configuration creates a self-contained lower half, enhancing efficiency compared to traditional 1/4-wave monopoles relying on vehicle bodies for a ground plane. The article specifies construction using PVC components, 10-gauge insulated wire for elements, and provides precise dimensions in both inches and centimeters for the 25-3/16" (64 cm) vertical and 7-3/16" (20 cm) radials. Performance data indicates an honest 3 dBi of gain at 6 feet elevation (2 dBi free-space), with a pattern favoring the horizon, suitable for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications. At 20 feet high, the same antenna exhibits almost 6 dBi of gain, with a nominal 50 Ohm feedpoint impedance at 146.850 MHz. Tuning instructions involve trimming element lengths, with the author achieving a 1.2:1 SWR by pruning the mast to 24-3/4" and radials to 7". The resource highlights the antenna's effectiveness for mobile LEO satellite uplinks, particularly at low elevations, and its suitability for fixed, mobile, or portable operations. The flexible wire elements allow for easy folding, making it a practical choice for backpacking. The original design by K5OE was previously hosted on aol.com.

F6EZX presents a detailed account of constructing a compact, multi-band _Levy antenna_ for portable holiday operations, specifically addressing issues with local QRM from a previous _Deltaloop_ setup. The article outlines the design criteria, including multi-band operation on 40m, 30m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m, a symmetrical configuration to reduce interference, and a low take-off angle for DX. Construction involves 2x 10.3m radiating elements and a 15.3m open-wire feeder (ladder line) with 7cm spacing, made from 1.5mm2 copper wire and foam pipe insulation spacers. Theoretical calculations, referencing F9HJ's "_Les antennes Levy_" book, guide the determination of element lengths and feeder impedance characteristics, aiming for a good match across bands with a commercial antenna tuner. Initial field tests with the _VCI Vectronics VC300DLP_ tuner showed a 1:1 SWR from 80m to 10m, with some difficulty on 17m. The antenna, mounted as a 45-degree slopper with the high point at 12m, successfully facilitated DX contacts to South America, particularly Chile and Argentina, suggesting a lower take-off angle compared to the previous Deltaloop which favored Brazil. The Levy antenna significantly reduced TVI/RFI, attributed to its improved symmetry and greater distance from the QRA. While signal reports on 15m and 20m were 1-2 S-points lower than the Deltaloop, its performance on 40m and 30m was comparable, fulfilling the design goals for a portable, low-cost, multi-band solution.

The QM7 antenna is a simple 7 elements Yagi with 3.70 m boom length for the lower 144 MHz SSB/MGM band, used it mainly for Sporadic-E and MS contacts. It exhibits a forward gain of 11.35 dBd; i.e. 13.5 dB forward gain over the isotropic radiator, while the F/R is about 12.5 dB

Presents G0GSF Brian's ZS6BKW antenna, a refined iteration of the classic G5RV, offering improved performance across multiple HF bands. The design emphasizes specific radiator and ladder line lengths to achieve lower SWR on 40m, 20m, 17m, 12m, and 10m, making it a practical choice for operators seeking a single wire antenna solution. The document includes critical dimensions for the flat-top and the 450-ohm ladder line section, which are key to its multiband resonance characteristics. Unlike the original G5RV, the ZS6BKW aims for direct 50-ohm feedpoint impedance on several bands, reducing the need for an external antenna tuner. My field experience with similar optimized dipoles confirms that precise construction, particularly the ladder line length, is paramount for realizing the intended SWR benefits. This design offers a compelling alternative for hams with limited space or those preferring a less complex antenna system.

PA3FWM's software defined radio (SDR) page documents his extensive hardware and software development efforts between 2004 and 2009. Initial experiments utilized a direct conversion receiver with 90-degree phase difference, feeding a PC soundcard at 48 kHz sample rate, covering 24 kHz of spectrum around a 7080.5 kHz local oscillator. This setup, similar to AC50G's QEX 2002 article, allowed for basic I/Q signal processing to distinguish signals above and below the LO frequency. Limitations included fixed crystal frequencies, 16-bit dynamic range, and narrow bandwidth. Subsequent hardware iterations aimed for enhanced performance, incorporating external 24-bit ADCs with 192 kHz sample rates, connected via 10 Mbit/s Ethernet. A **MC145170-based PLL** and programmable octave divider provided a 58 kHz to 30 MHz tuning range. The **Tayloe mixer** was employed, with differential outputs feeding a PCM1804 ADC. An ATmega32 microcontroller handled serial data conversion to Ethernet frames, though without CRC calculation due to processing constraints. Later designs integrated AD7760 2.5 Msamples/second ADCs and a Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA, enabling direct reception of 0-1 MHz spectrum and eventually 2.5 MHz bandwidth across the shortwave spectrum. Software was refactored to use an initial 8192 non-windowed FFT for efficient high-bandwidth processing. The project culminated in a two-way QSO on 21 MHz using the developed hardware and software, demonstrating transmit capabilities with a D/A converter. The system exhibited a 2.5 MHz wide spectrum display and a zoomed 19 kHz display, capturing signals like ionospheric chirp sounders and RTTY contest activity. Challenges included noise leakage from digital circuitry and cooling for high-power dissipation components.

An experimental antenna, similar to the _TAK spiral antenna_, was evaluated for SWR response over the 7.0 to 7.3 MHz frequency range. The analysis presents specific results: beam length significantly affects SWR, with increased distance between spirals raising the resonant frequency; the combined length of antenna and hookup wire lowers the resonant frequency as it increases; and spiral diameter impacts bandwidth, with larger diameters yielding greater bandwidth. The design addresses the fixed beam length limitation of the commercial TAK antenna by introducing an adjustable version constructed primarily from PVC electrical conduit and water pipe, using 14-gauge aluminum wire. The resource includes a detailed mechanical design, construction steps, and a parts list. It also features a spiral antenna spreadsheet model for calculating design parameters like start point, pitch, safe edge, spoke length, and arm length, which aids in determining wire length and kerf cutting tables. Model verification involved constructing an antenna to specific parameters, with SWR tests conducted using an _MFJ Model 269_ antenna analyzer at 13 feet above ground with 60 feet of RG8 mini coax. Measurements showed that adjusting beam length from 27 to 37 inches shifted the resonant frequency by approximately 0.18 MHz. Further data compares 32-inch versus 48-inch diameter spirals, demonstrating increased bandwidth for the larger diameter. The model accurately predicted revolutions for given antenna lengths, pitch, and starting distances. The final design achieved a resonant frequency of 7.17 MHz, favoring the voice portion of the 40-meter band after adjustments.

JJ0DRC's HF multi-band delta loop antenna project, initially conceived during the waning peak of Cycle 23, addresses the common challenge of achieving effective DX operation from a small residential lot in Japan. Dissatisfied with a ground plane antenna's performance in SSB pile-ups, the author sought a beam-like solution without a tower, drawing inspiration from a JJ1VKL article in CQ Ham Radio Sep. 2000. The antenna, constructed in October 2000, employs two 7.2-meter fishing rods (37% carbon fiber, reinforced with cyano-acrylate glue and aluminum tape) and 1mm enameled wire, fed by an Icom AH-4 external antenna tuner. While the exact beam pattern remains unmeasured, JJ0DRC observed a significantly higher callback rate compared to dipole antennas, particularly on higher bands. The system's circumference length of 15-20m is crucial for maintaining a good beam pattern across HF bands, though performance on lower bands like 80m, 40m, and 30m becomes less directional as the length deviates from a full wavelength. Ongoing maintenance addressed degradation issues, including aluminum tape cracking and wire breakage at connection points due to strong winds (often exceeding 10-15m/s in winter). The author reinforced rod connections with IRECTOR PIPE SYSTEM components and INSU-ROCK ties, and improved wire attachment methods using Cremona rope and epoxy bond to enhance durability.

The W1TAG LF Receiving Loop is a specialized antenna project for LF reception, designed to mitigate local noise and enhance weak signal pickup on the lower frequencies. This square loop, measuring 6 feet per side, utilizes 14 turns of #12 THHN wire wound on a PVC frame, offering a robust mechanical structure. The design incorporates a series-tuned circuit with a coupling transformer, allowing for tuning from over 400 kHz down to _45 kHz_ using a switched capacitor bank. Construction details include the use of 1.5-inch PVC pipe for the frame, with specific measurements for spreaders and drilled holes for wire threading. The two 7-turn sections of wire are connected at the center, providing an option for a center tap. The loop rotates on a 1-inch steel pipe, enabling directional nulling of noise sources. The tuning unit, housed in a box clamped to the PVC, employs a 1:2 step-up transformer wound on an _FT-82-77 core_ and uses relays to switch capacitance values from 50 pF to 6400 pF, providing precise frequency adjustment. The current setup connects to the shack via 100 feet of RG-58, feeding into a W1VD-designed preamp, with plans for a balanced, shielded twisted pair cable upgrade.
