A 9 dB gain 70cm collinear antenna construction is detailed, utilizing eight half-wavelength sections of _RG58/U_ coaxial cable. The design incorporates specific calculations for velocity factor (0.66 for RG58/U) to determine precise element lengths, such as 223mm for a half-wavelength at 444 MHz. A quarter-wave radiating element of #16 solid wire, 169mm long, is added to the top, and a 160mm aluminum tube acts as a quarter-wave counterpoise at the feed point. RF choke baluns, constructed from three _FT50-43_ toroids, are positioned a half-wavelength from the feed point to mitigate common mode current. Assembly involves soldering the coax sections in series, followed by SWR testing during construction and final mounting within a ¾-inch PVC pipe. The article suggests using four half-wave elements for a shorter antenna, noting a potential slight increase in SWR, which can be mitigated with quarter-wave ground radials. The design principles and formulas are scalable for other VHF/UHF bands like 6m, 2m, or 1¼m, providing a versatile homebrew solution for enhanced gain.

It eliminates the need for a balun and can be fed directly with 50-ohm coaxial cable.

This project details the construction of a **full-sized 40-meter vertical antenna**, born from a renewed interest in 7 MHz operation and a desire for improved effectiveness over simple dipoles. The author, K5DKZ, initially focused on VHF experimentation, which provided an inventory of aluminum tubing and fiberglass spreaders for this endeavor. Before this vertical, K5DKZ utilized an 80/40 meter inverted-vee trap dipole and a 40-meter broadband dipole, but now primarily uses a pair of full-sized, phased, quarter-wave verticals spaced 35 feet apart for serious 40-meter work. The construction involves a base-heavy design for stability, using a 44.5-inch section of 1-1/4 inch steel TV mast driven into 1-3/8 inch aluminum tubing, insulated by a 105-inch section of Schedule 40 PVC pipe. The assembly reaches 31 feet, close to the 32 feet required for a quarter-wavelength on 40 meters, with fine-tuning achieved by winding wire onto a fiberglass spreader. The design is explicitly presented as a foundation for a two-element 40-meter Yagi beam, outlining modifications like substituting aluminum for steel in the base and using an inductive hairpin match for the driven element. The article also discusses tuning considerations for a large 40-meter beam, noting the 100 to 200 kHz upward frequency shift when raised, and suggesting methods for installation on a tower. A 50-ohm generator feeding a 50-ohm line connected to a _quarter-wave transformer_ (150 ohms) terminated in a 450-ohm load is analyzed to understand transient behavior. The paper meticulously tracks voltage and current waves, reflection coefficients, and power levels through a sequence of events, starting from quiescent conditions. It details how incident and reflected waves combine and interact at impedance discontinuities, illustrating the dynamic changes in impedance and SWR at various points in the system. The analysis reveals that the impedance at the interface between the 50-ohm line and the 150-ohm transformer changes from 150 ohms to **64.3 ohms** after the first reflected wave arrives. Subsequent reflections cause the impedance to asymptotically approach 50 ohms, reaching **53.22 ohms** after five wave terms. The study also examines the generator's reaction to transient SWR changes, noting that a 3:1 SWR can temporarily reduce generator output to 0.75 watts, but these effects are temporary and diminish as the system approaches steady-state conditions.

Feedpoint impedance is low, with ground resistance playing a critical role in achieving a usable SWR. The article emphasizes the importance of an effective ground rod at the feedpoint for proper operation and tuning, suggesting an antenna analyzer for precise adjustments. It confirms the antenna's suitability for DX, citing successful contacts from Oregon to the East Coast and Hawaii on a 160-meter variant, making it a viable option for urban operators seeking low-angle radiation on 80 meters.

The collinear antenna, or Marconi-Franklin antenna, is an omnidirectional, high-gain antenna composed of in-phase half-wave dipoles aligned vertically. By using quarter-wave transmission line segments, it maximizes gain at a low horizon angle, outperforming a half-wave dipole. Adding segments increases gain but narrows bandwidth. A popular DIY version, the CoCo antenna, uses half-wave coaxial cable segments connected by non-radiating transmission lines. Built with stable velocity factor cables, a matching quarter-wave sleeve balun, and ferrite rings for attenuation, the antenna achieves performance comparable to commercial models.

The 160-meter amateur radio band, spanning 1.8 to 2 MHz, was historically the lowest frequency amateur allocation until the introduction of the 630-meter and 2200-meter bands. ITU Region 1 allocates 1.81–2 MHz, while other regions use 1.8–2 MHz. This band, often called "Top Band" or "Gentleman's Band," was established by the International Radiotelegraph Conference in Washington, D.C., on October 4, 1927, with an initial allocation of 1.715–2 MHz. Effective operation on 160 meters presents significant challenges due to the large antenna sizes required; a quarter-wavelength monopole is over 130 feet, and horizontal dipoles need similar heights. Propagation is typically local during the day, but long-distance contacts are common at night, especially around sunrise and sunset, and during solar minimums. The band experienced a resurgence after the LORAN-A system was phased out in North America in December 1980, leading to the removal of power restrictions.

It addresses the common challenge of fitting multiple HF bands into restricted physical footprints, providing practical guidance for hams with smaller backyards or portable operations. The core of the offering is an interactive calculator that determines required loading coil inductance and dipole lengths for various amateur bands from 160m to 10m. Users input their available space, and the tool provides dimensions, coil turns, and an efficiency rating (Good or Fair) based on the antenna's electrical length relative to a quarter-wavelength. It also suggests suitable _PVC_ pipe diameters for coil forms. The article further illustrates a center feed-point assembly using an 18-inch section of 2-inch _PVC_ pipe, detailing eye-bolt spacing and coaxial connector installation. It emphasizes the importance of adequate spacing between parallel dipoles and offers customization options for the feed-point, including the addition of a _Balun_ for improved feedline isolation.

Steve Nichols, G0KYA, presents a practical examination of ground systems for vertical antennas, drawing heavily on the empirical research of Rudy Severns, N6LF. He explains that a robust radial field is crucial for ground-dependent verticals, effectively replacing the antenna's "missing half" and mitigating severe RF absorption in lossy soil. Nichols clarifies that surface radials do not strictly require a quarter-wavelength; instead, deploying a minimum of 16 to 32 shorter wires often yields superior results compared to fewer, longer ones. The presentation also addresses the common SWR paradox: a poor ground might show a perfect 1:1 match, but adding radials, while potentially raising the SWR to around 1.4:1, significantly improves true radiation efficiency. Nichols defines counterpoises as elevated wire networks that substitute for earth connections, offering solutions for limited-space installations, such as the **Folded Counterpoise (FCP)** for 160 meters. This resource provides actionable engineering data for optimizing vertical antenna performance.

It outlines the preparation of the 72-inch telescoping whip (originally from Radio Shack, with an alternate source now provided by _Pacific Antenna_), the construction of the loading coils from PVC risers, and the fabrication of the aluminum rod base sections. Specific instructions cover threading aluminum rod with a _1/4-20 threading die_ and assembling the feedpoint insulator with a BNC connector, along with recommendations for radial deployment. KA5DVS, an avid traveler and QRP enthusiast, developed the PAC-12 to address the bulkiness of random wire setups and the limitations of commercial portable antennas like the Outbacker or SuperAntennas MP1. His goal was a lightweight, packable antenna that disassembles into 12-inch sections, achieving an assembled length of approximately 8 feet. The design strategically places the loading coil away from the base for improved efficiency. The PAC-12 notably placed first in efficiency compared to a quarter-wavelength wire vertical at the HFPack antenna shootout during the Pacificon conference in October 2001, demonstrating its practical performance for field operations. Appendix C showcases various _NJQRP Club_ members' PAC-12 constructions, including a 20m beam made with multiple PAC-12 elements.

a 20M quarter-wave vertical antenna with a 6m telescopic mast, 1:1 balun, and spiral-wound driven element. Designed for QRP at 14.285 MHz, the antenna’s performance exceeded expectations, delivering low SWR and surprisingly quiet reception. Initial testing yielded successful contacts with European stations and EC1KR, showcasing its effectiveness. Compact and easy to deploy, the antenna promises to be an excellent portable solution for future hilltop operations.

WB8LZR details the construction and initial field results of a multi-band vertical wire antenna, designed to complement his existing horizontal loop for improved DX on 80 meters. The antenna utilizes a 67-foot vertical wire, configured as a quarter-wave radiator on 80m, and employs a 1:1 current balun for RF isolation on 80m, 30m, and 17m. For bands like 40m, 20m, and 10m, where the wire acts as a half-wave or full-wave radiator, an additional impedance transforming _unun_ is integrated to manage the significantly higher feedpoint impedance and voltage. The author notes the vertical's performance as a receiving antenna, observing reduced noise compared to his main horizontal loop, particularly on 80m, and even hearing some long-path signals the loop missed. Initial QRP contacts, including a **1-watt** QSO with a _VP2 station_ on 30m, demonstrate its transmit capability. While the radial system is currently rudimentary, the project outlines practical considerations for multi-band vertical deployment and impedance matching.

How to Design and Build a Field Expedient End-Fed Half-Wave Antenna for 20m, 40m and 80m. This Shorty 80m EFHW comprises a 49:1 autotransformer (to match the very high impedance at the end of a half-wave wire), a half-wavelength wire for 40m (also a quarter-wavelength for 80m), a loading coil and a short tail wire. The coil and the short tail wire (about 6 feet) make up the other quarter wave on 80m.

A 20 cm mobile antenna design is presented, addressing the need for compact, mechanically stable solutions for VHF/UHF mobile communications. This resource details the _SN 1/8_ antenna, an alternative to traditional quarter-wave or 5/8-wave whips, specifically engineered for robust performance in dynamic, moving environments. The design emphasizes a spherical radiation pattern, which is claimed to enhance signal reflections and contribute to a 2 dB gain over standard mobile antennas, making it suitable for vehicle installations where discretion and vibration resistance are critical. The construction guide includes diagrams and practical considerations for building this antenna, which is noted for its ease of installation and resilience. The design's compact form factor and inherent stability are key advantages for mobile operators seeking reliable and efficient communication without the bulk or fragility of longer antenna systems. The resource, authored by _F5SN_, provides a practical approach to improving mobile station effectiveness.

The Quarter-wave stub can be used for many purposes. If it is left with an open end it can be used as a notch filter to attenuate certain frequencies. A quarter wave length of a transmission line can also be used as an impedance transformer, to know more about the Quarter-wave impedance transformer

Operating from Banana Island, Sierra Leone (AF-037), the 9L2019 DXpedition by F6KOP and a ten-operator team used the callsign 9LY1JM from January 9-21, 2019. This detailed report covers the logistical challenges, including securing visas and licenses with local assistance from Mark 9L1YXJ and Gregory of Dalton’s Guest House. The team deployed monoband quarter-wave verticals on the beach and two Beverage on Ground (BOG) antennas for Europe/Asia and the USA, operating four stations simultaneously. Technical hurdles encountered included high tides submerging antennas, requiring repositioning, and persistent QRM between closely spaced stations, mitigated by doubling filters. CW signal irregularities at 30-32 WPM were resolved by PC and WINTEST restarts. A significant FT8 logging bug was identified and corrected with on-site software. Despite these issues, the team logged over 4,000 QSOs in the first 24 hours, averaging 5,000 QSOs daily, with a peak of over 6,000 in one day. Propagation varied, with excellent 160m conditions on January 12 yielding over 750 QSOs, and a later four-hour opening pushing the 160m total past 1,600. High bands were challenging due to low solar activity, but mid-bands provided intense pileups and rapid continent-wide contacts. The DXpedition concluded with nearly 50,000 QSOs, including a successful school QSO with Collège Doisneau de Sarralbe (57), managed by F1ULQ and F6KFT.
