A 10-20 meters coverage delta loop antenna. After relocating, DL2HCB designed a multiband loop antenna to cover 10-20m with an open-wire feed for impedance matching and compact installation. Inspired by the mini-X-Q design, a modified 10m delta-loop was built, enhanced with a 1/4 wave shorted stub for 28 MHz using 450-ohm ladder line. The antenna delivers east-west broadside radiation and performs as a closed loop on other bands. Operational tests yielded strong European signals and successful DX contacts, including a 20m QRP QSO with FY/DJ0PJ.

The G5RV antenna, with an overall length of **31.10m (102ft)**, functions as a 3/2-wave on 20 meters when installed horizontally at 12m (39ft), exhibiting a resonant frequency of 14.150MHz and an approximate resistance of 80 ohms. Its 10.36m (34ft) stub line, designed as a 1/2-wave on 14.150MHz with a 0.97 velocity coefficient, acts as an impedance transformer across other bands, aiming for multiband operation without traps. On 20m and higher frequencies, the G5RV demonstrates improved gain compared to a standard dipole, attributed to the _collinear effect_ from multiple 1/2-waves along the wire. The original design sought a multiband solution for limited spaces, often requiring an Antenna Tuning Unit (ATU) for effective operation across bands like 80, 40, 30, and 20m, particularly with modern solid-state PAs. Variants, such as the F8CI modification, incorporate a 1/4 current balun at the stub line's base for symmetrical-to-asymmetrical transition, known as a _remote balun_. Proper flat-top or inverted-V installation is critical for maintaining symmetry and collinear gain, with inverted-V apex angles below 120° progressively diminishing higher-band performance.

Determining the actual need for an antenna tuner often hinges on the specific antenna and feed line configuration in use. While many hams believe a tuner is always essential, its primary role is to present a 50-ohm impedance to the transceiver, not to "tune" the antenna itself. For instance, a resonant dipole fed with _coaxial cable_ at its design frequency typically requires no tuner, as the feed line impedance closely matches the radio's output. However, operating a non-resonant antenna, or using a resonant antenna on multiple bands, frequently necessitates a tuner to manage high Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) on the feed line. The article clarifies that a tuner placed at the transceiver only matches the radio to the feed line, not the antenna to the feed line. For maximum efficiency with a non-resonant antenna, an _automatic antenna tuner_ (ATU) or a remote tuner placed at the antenna feed point is often more effective, minimizing losses in the feed line. The discussion also touches on the practical implications of SWR, noting that modern transceivers often fold back power at high SWR, making a tuner a practical necessity to achieve full output power, even if the antenna itself is not perfectly matched.

Presents a practical design for a **crossed-dipole turnstile antenna** specifically engineered for 2-meter Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) events. The author, WB6RDV, details a robust, omnidirectional, horizontally-polarized antenna, addressing the international ARDF rules requiring such characteristics at a height of two to three meters above ground. This contrasts with the vertical polarization often used in Southern California, highlighting the design's adherence to specific event requirements. The electrical design employs a classic crossed-dipole with a 75-ohm phasing section, resulting in a slight impedance mismatch and an SWR of approximately 1.3:1 with a 50-ohm feedline. Construction utilizes readily available and inexpensive PVC plumbing components and 1/8-inch bronze welding rod for elements. The guide provides step-by-step instructions for mechanical assembly, including drilling element holes at precise 90-degree spacing and preparing the RG-179 matching section. WB6RDV shares insights from his own build experience, discussing the use of plated brass versus aluminum spacers for element attachment and the effectiveness of crimping as an alternative to soldering. The document also covers final assembly, including the integration of ferrite beads as a choke balun and options for weatherproofing and alternative mounting configurations, emphasizing the adaptability of the design for other VHF bands through scaling.

The G3TPW CobWebb antenna design provides a compact, horizontally polarized, omni-directional solution for 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m bands. This antenna utilizes five full-size half-wave dipoles, each bent into a square configuration to achieve omni-directional radiation without the nulls typically found in straight dipoles. The design incorporates a single 50-ohm coaxial feedline with an integrated air-core choke balun, minimizing feeder radiation and reducing EMC issues. Construction details include using PVC-covered multi-stranded copper twin cable for elements, supported by a fiberglass cross. The document specifies tapping points for impedance matching to 50 ohms on all five bands, ensuring high radiation efficiency without lossy traps or loading coils. Physical dimensions are compact, with 2.6-meter (8.5 feet) sides and a total weight of 6 kg (14 lbs), making it suitable for mounting on a 20-foot aluminum scaffold pole. Detailed instructions for assembling the junction box, including terminal strip wiring and the coaxial choke balun, are provided with photographs and diagrams. The design emphasizes a confined electric field to reduce coupling to nearby conductors, which helps mitigate TVI and makes the antenna less sensitive to mounting height or ground conductivity.

This drawing shows a simple 10 meter wire J-pole antenna designed for 28.4 MHz. It is a vertical, end-fed Zepp-style antenna made from common materials and intended for easy home construction. The main radiating element is a straight length of stranded copper wire, either 14 or 18 gauge, cut to about 16.5 feet. At the top, the wire is supported by an insulator, allowing the antenna to be hoisted vertically. The matching section is made from 450-ohm ladder line, approximately 7 feet 9.5 inches long, and shorted at the bottom. This matching stub transforms the impedance so the antenna can be fed with coaxial cable. The feed point is tapped about 6 inches above the bottom of the stub, with the shield and center conductor connected at the proper points. A choke balun is formed with five turns of RG-58 coax in a 4-inch diameter loop to help reduce unwanted RF on the feed line. The drawing notes that this antenna has about 0 dBd gain, similar to a dipole, but offers an omnidirectional pattern and low-angle radiation when installed high. Its main advantage is practical performance, simple construction, and effective coverage for 10 meter operation.

This project details three variants of a vertical half-wave antenna design for the 4-meter (70MHz) amateur radio band. The antennas use end-feeding with a parallel-tuned circuit for impedance matching to 50-ohm coaxial cable. The first variant uses suspended flexible wire for portable use, the second employs a fiberglass rod with internal wire for permanent outdoor installation, and the third utilizes aluminum tent poles for quick mobile deployment. Despite the narrow bandwidth of the matching circuit, this suits the narrow 4m FM allocation well. The design offers an effective omnidirectional radiation pattern and can be constructed with readily available materials.

This resource details the construction and feeding of a vertical Moxon antenna specifically designed for the 20-meter band (14 MHz). It addresses the common issue of impedance variations at the feed point of vertical dipoles and Moxons, which typically requires the coax to exit at a specific angle (45-90 degrees) to maintain a good 50-ohm match. The presented solution involves opening the lower corner of the fed element and utilizing a transformer for impedance matching, simplifying installation and improving SWR. The alternative feeding method provides a stable match, eliminating the need for precise coax routing to achieve a low SWR. This design offers a practical improvement over conventional vertical Moxon feeding, making deployment significantly easier. The author, SM0DTK, confirms the efficacy of this setup, noting its fine performance and reduced installation complexity compared to traditional methods.

This article addresses the subject of obtaining the best signal transfer from an antenna to the typical 50-ohm receiver input over a wide frequency range, with emphasis on medium-wave (500 - 2000 kHz), encompassing the standard AM broadcast band and the 160-m amateur band.

A 10-meter J-Pole antenna, detailed in QST February 1950, offers a straightforward solution for hams operating with restricted space. The construction plans are clear, allowing even those with basic workshop skills to assemble a functional antenna.

Constructing a **2-meter** J-pole antenna from readily available copper plumbing components offers a robust and cost-effective solution for VHF operation. This design, dubbed the "Plumber's Delight," functions essentially as a half-wave dipole fed by 50-ohm coax via a **gamma match**. It incorporates a quarter-wave copper tubing support, which, when affixed to a metal mast or tower, enhances forward power in the direction of the radiating elements. The original configuration utilized a small ceramic trimmer capacitor for the gamma match, suitable for up to 10 watts. A subsequent modification replaced this with a 50 pF variable capacitor housed in a plastic enclosure, accommodating higher RF power and improving weather resistance. The antenna elements are secured using a copper "T" fitting, and an SO-239 connector mounts directly to this fitting. Performance includes gain away from the support mast, and tuning is straightforward by adjusting the gamma match capacitor for a 1:1 SWR. The total cost for materials, excluding the capacitor and coax, can be under $10.

Portable Vertical Antenna for 75m and 40m featuring Low radiation angle for DX, easy to install and to match 50 ohms

The "Tenna Dipper" is a low power antenna analyzer and ATU tuning aid. With this handy accessory, you can determine the 50 Ohm resonance frequency of antennas or you can adjust your antenna tuner for a 50 Ohm match without generating QRM

An antenna does not have to be resonant to work, as the primary reason for resonance is to eliminate the need for an impedance-matching device. A non-resonant wire dipole fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function as an effective multiband antenna. Two wires are essential for powering an antenna, ideally with a balanced configuration like a dipole fed by parallel-wire line, though coaxial cable can be used with a 1:1 balun to mitigate RF feedback on the shield. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and aiming RF energy, concentrating it in a particular direction, as seen in beam antennas or shaped radiation patterns of wire antennas. The function of an antenna tuner is to match the transceiver's 50 Ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, which can vary widely. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (Windom antennas) can be used, often requiring a counterpoise or radial system. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent, inclined, or even vertical, affecting feed point impedance. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength necessitate a ground system, typically comprising radial wires, with more radials generally leading to greater efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee a good antenna, as an inefficient antenna with a poor ground system can still show a perfect SWR while wasting RF as heat. Always using the best feed line affordable is crucial for minimizing loss and maximizing RF signal delivery to and from the antenna.

The N0KHQ Coax Square antenna, designed for 17 meters and built using RG-58 coaxial cable, presents an intriguing option for hams with limited space. L. B. Cebik, _W4RNL_, meticulously models and analyzes this array, clarifying its classification not as a modified Moxon, but as a distinct member of the "dual-coupled, 2-element, parasitic array" family. The design leverages the velocity factor of RG-58 (approximately 0.66-0.67) to achieve significantly shorter element lengths compared to full-size counterparts, resulting in a perimeter of 42 feet for the N0KHQ array versus 54 feet for a standard Moxon. _NEC_ modeling reveals the coax square's performance characteristics, including a forward gain of 5.6 dBi and a 23.7 dB front-to-back ratio on 18.118 MHz. While slightly less gain than a Moxon (6.0 dBi), its pattern exhibits Yagi-like nulls at 90 degrees, distinguishing it from the Moxon's wider beamwidth. The article also delves into the unique feedpoint considerations, explaining how the split braid and center conductor of the RG-58 driver effectively form a folded dipole, allowing for impedance transformation to achieve a good match for 50-Ohm cable. Despite its shortened elements, which inherently narrow the operating bandwidth, the coax square maintains satisfactory performance across the 17-meter band. The analysis emphasizes that while SWR curves are important, a holistic view of gain and pattern degradation across the band is crucial. This antenna is a viable solution for operators needing a compact, directional array, particularly for narrow bands like 17, 30, or 12 meters, where its high-Q performance is most effective.

For radio amateurs seeking compact, directional antenna solutions, the Moxon Rectangle offers an attractive alternative to traditional two-element Yagis. This resource compiles several articles by L. The articles delve into specific band applications, including designs for 10 meters, 40 meters, and 2 meters, alongside discussions on multi-banding techniques and pattern characteristics. Comparisons are drawn between the Moxon and other antenna types, such as VK2ABQ Squares, highlighting the Moxon's advantages in terms of size and performance. Practical construction notes are provided for both wire and aluminum versions, offering insights into building these antennas for different operating environments.

Constructing a Lindenblad antenna for 137MHz NOAA satellite reception involves specific design considerations for optimal performance. The resource details the use of 4mm galvanised steel fencing wire, 300-ohm television ribbon cable, and wood/plastic components for the antenna structure. Key dimensions for a 137.58MHz-resonant antenna are provided, derived from the ARRL Satellite Handbook, specifying s, l, w, and d as 42, 926, 893, and 654mm respectively. The antenna is designed for Right Hand Circularly Polarised (RHCP) signals, requiring the four folded dipole elements to be tilted clockwise by 30 degrees. A significant aspect covered is impedance matching between the antenna's 75-ohm impedance and a typical 50-ohm receiver input. A twelfth-wave matching transformer, constructed from 117mm sections of 50-ohm RG-58 and 75-ohm RG-59 coax with a 0.66 velocity factor, is described. The article also addresses coaxial cable and connector selection, recommending 75-ohm Type-N connectors for RG-6 cable in professional setups and F56/F59 connectors for general use, while strongly advising against PL-259/SO-259 connectors for VHF. Strategies for mitigating Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) are discussed, including antenna placement to shield from local TV transmitters and the use of commercial or DIY band-pass filters, such as cavity resonators or helical notch filters, along with ferrite chokes on coaxial cables. Antenna orientation is explored, noting the Lindenblad's 'cone of silence' directly overhead and its maximized sensitivity towards the horizon. An experimental vertical tilt of 90 degrees is presented as a method to improve overhead reception and reduce interference from strong horizontal signals, particularly relevant in high RFI environments like the Siding Spring Observatory site.

This construction guide details the process, beginning with specific dimensions: 13.11 meters (43 feet) for the 450-ohm ladder line and initial dipole arm lengths of approximately 14.8 meters each. It emphasizes the critical role of an _antenna analyzer_ for accurate tuning, particularly for determining the velocity factor of the ladder line and achieving a 1:1 impedance match. The article outlines the materials required, including a 1:1 current balun, 450-ohm window line, wire for the dipole arms, and a 50-ohm non-inductive resistor for testing. It provides a step-by-step procedure for cutting the ladder line to its electrical half-wavelength, explaining how to calculate the velocity factor using measured and free-space frequencies. For instance, a measured 50-ohm impedance at 12.54 MHz with a calculated free-space half-wavelength frequency of 11.44 MHz yields a velocity factor of 0.91. Final adjustments involve hoisting the antenna to its operational height and fine-tuning the dipole arm lengths to achieve optimal SWR, specifically targeting 14.200 MHz. The _ZS6BKW_ design is noted for its performance on 80m, 40m, 20m, 10m, and 6m, though it is not optimized for 15m operation. The author, _VK4MDX_, shares practical tips for durable construction using stainless steel wire and cable clamps.

It specifies a 1:1 trifilar balun wound on a ferrite rod and describes the antenna adjustment process using an _MFJ-259B Antenna Analyser_. Initial test results indicate an SWR of 1:1 at resonance and a bandwidth of approximately 240 kHz on 20m, even at a low height of five feet above ground. The distinctive utility lies in its focus on a practical, easily deployable beam antenna for portable DXing, offering a viable alternative to more complex or larger arrays.

The **2M Moxon antenna** design presented operates at 144 MHz, providing a compact, directional solution for VHF communications. Construction involves aluminum tubing for the elements, with specific dimensions for the driven element and reflector to achieve optimal performance. The design aims for a good front-to-back ratio and a relatively low SWR across the 2-meter band, making it suitable for portable or fixed station use where directivity is beneficial. Element lengths are critical for proper resonance and pattern. The driven element measures approximately 38.5 inches, while the reflector is slightly longer at 40.5 inches. Spacing between the elements is 12 inches, forming the characteristic Moxon rectangle. This configuration yields a gain of about 5.5 dBi and a front-to-back ratio exceeding 20 dB, which is advantageous for reducing interference from unwanted directions. Feedpoint impedance is close to 50 ohms, allowing direct connection to coaxial cable without complex matching networks. The antenna's lightweight structure, typically under 2 pounds, facilitates easy deployment and rotation, making it a practical choice for field operations or as a compact home station antenna.

Demonstrates the design principles and performance characteristics of **corner reflector antennas**, emphasizing their high gain and directional properties. It covers critical design factors such as the corner angle and the spacing between the radiating dipole and the reflector vertex. The resource explains how reducing the corner angle increases gain but lowers feed impedance, making matching more challenging. Practical angles of 90 degrees or 60 degrees are discussed, with 90 degrees offering easier impedance matching despite slightly lower gain. Details key design considerations, including reflector side length exceeding two wavelengths and reflector width greater than one wavelength for a half-wave radiator. It specifies reflector construction using wire netting, sheet metal, or parallel metal spines spaced less than 0.1 wavelength. The article provides a table with general dimensions for UHF and VHF bands, noting typical impedance values of 50 to 75 ohms and expected SWR of 1.7:1 on the lower band edge. Adjustable radiator-to-vertex spacing is highlighted as crucial for final tuning.

A 50-ohm 10W resistor forms the core of this portable QRP antenna, designed by _K0EMT_ for convenient operation on 160m and 80m. The construction involves soldering the resistor to a BNC connector, with one lead to ground and the other to the center conductor, then insulating the assembly. This minimalist design aims to provide a highly portable solution for low-band QRP operations, acknowledging the inherent trade-offs between antenna size and efficiency. Testing with an antenna analyzer revealed low SWR on both 160m and 80m, with a Yaesu FT-817 confirming good matching. While 40m and 30m showed higher SWR, the primary focus remains on the lower bands. The author successfully tested the antenna with **2.5W CW** output, demonstrating its practical application for QRP field operations where ease of deployment is paramount, even if it means sacrificing some **gain** compared to full-sized antennas.

Optimizing the ZS6BKW antenna for full HF band coverage often requires specific modifications beyond its standard configuration. This resource details several enhancements, beginning with a simple series capacitor to improve 80m SWR, a technique W5DXP found effective for permanent installation due to its minimal impact on higher bands. Further improvements include a 10-inch parallel open stub for 10m resonance, shifting the frequency to 28.4 MHz with an SWR of approximately 1.8:1, a practical solution for Technician class operators. The document then explores a switchable matching section, adding or subtracting one foot of ladder line at the 1:1 choke-balun, which significantly impacts higher frequency bands and eliminates the need for a tuner on 17m. W5DXP's _AIM-4170D_ antenna analyzer measurements confirm these effects. More advanced modifications involve a parallel capacitor for further 80m SWR reduction, requiring remote switching for multi-band operation, and relay-switched parallel capacitors at specific points on the 450-ohm matching section to achieve low SWR on 60m, 30m, and 15m. These detailed steps, including _Smith chart_ analyses for the challenging bands, aim to transform the ZS6BKW into a truly all-HF-band antenna, reflecting W5DXP's practical experience in antenna tuning.

The antenna's compact size, with a boom length of 1.83 meters (6 feet), makes it suitable for portable operations or installations with limited space. Construction involves standard amateur radio workshop tools and materials, with a gamma match for impedance transformation to 50 Ohms. The design prioritizes ease of construction and repeatable performance for the 6-meter enthusiast.

One point eight MHz to 30 MHz is the operational bandwidth for this 4:1 Ruthroff voltage balun, designed to interface an unbalanced T-Match network with a balanced antenna system. The project details the construction using a _T200-2_ powdered iron toroid core, tightly wrapped in PVC electrical tape for insulation, and wound with 17 double bifilar turns of 1.25mm enamelled copper wire. This outboard balun offers flexibility, allowing hams to trial various baluns based on antenna system and impedance characteristics, rather than integrating it directly into the tuner. The resource includes a schematic of the balun, a wiring diagram showing winding connections, and a table suggesting alternative toroid cores like the T80-2 or T400-2 with corresponding winding counts. Component sourcing is straightforward, listing items such as the _Amidon_ T-200-2 core, SO-239 connector, and a sealed polycarbonate enclosure from Jaycar. Performance evaluation was conducted using an _AIM 4170C_ antenna analyser, demonstrating efficient 1:4 voltage transformation across the specified HF spectrum. Further efficiency tests involved measuring RF power loss at various frequencies, revealing minimal loss—less than 0.7 dB from 3.6 MHz to 30 MHz, and only 2.0 dB at 1.8 MHz. These measurements, performed under ideal 50-ohm conditions, confirm the balun's effectiveness as a low-loss interface for multi-band antenna systems. The page also links to several other balun and unun projects, including 1:1 current and voltage baluns, and 9:1 voltage ununs, providing a broader context for impedance matching solutions.

The design employs a 2N2219(A) transistor in a Colpitts configuration, generating 100 to 350 mW of RF output power depending on the 9-18 Volt supply voltage and modulation depth. Frequency stability is maintained by a 28 MHz crystal, with fine-tuning possible via a Ct1 trimmer capacitor for approximately 1 kHz adjustment. The resource details the RF oscillator stage, implemented with a 2N2219 NPN transistor, emphasizing frequency stability and low power dissipation. It also covers the amplitude modulation stage, managed by a 2N2905 PNP transistor, which impresses audio information onto the carrier. Selective components (C3, C4, C7, C5) enhance voice frequencies within a +/- 5 kHz bandwidth, and modulation depth is controlled by R2 and R3. The project includes a 3-element L-type narrow bandpass filter (Ct3, L3, C10) to suppress harmonics and ensure a clean output signal. The project provides a complete schematic diagram, a comprehensive parts list including specific capacitor, resistor, and inductor values, and construction notes for the coils (L1, L2, L3). It also offers practical advice on enclosure requirements, suggesting an all-metal case or a PVC box with graphite paint for RF shielding. Operational parameters such as current draw (27mA@9V to 45mA@16V) and input impedance (50 Ohms) are specified, alongside guidance on antenna matching and the importance of a valid amateur radio license for 10-meter band operation.

A fractional bandwidth of up to 30:1 characterizes spiral antennas, making them highly effective across a very wide frequency range, often from 1 GHz to 30 GHz. The resource details two primary types: the **Log-Periodic Spiral Antenna** and the **Archimedean Spiral Antenna**, defining each with specific polar functions and illustrating their planar configurations. It explains that spiral antennas are typically circularly polarized, with a Half-Power Beamwidth (HPBW) of approximately 70-90 degrees, and a peak radiation direction perpendicular to the spiral plane. The content elaborates on critical design parameters affecting radiation, including the total length (outer radius) for lowest frequency, the flare rate ('a' constant) for optimal radiation versus capacitive behavior, the feed structure (often an infinite balun) for high-frequency operation, and the number of turns (typically 1.5 to 3 turns). It also discusses the theoretical impedance of 188 Ohms for Log-Periodic spirals, derived from Babinet's Principle, noting actual impedances are often 100-150 Ohms. The article presents a simple construction method for an Archimedean spiral, demonstrating VSWR and efficiency measurements. Measurements from a constructed spiral antenna show a VSWR that is fairly constant across the band, albeit with a mismatch loss of about 3 dB. The antenna efficiency remains around -5 dB (31.6%) across its operating range, indicating a decent wideband radiator despite opportunities for optimization.

The X80 multi-band HF vertical antenna, a commercial iteration of the Rybakov design, exhibits a physical length of 5.5 meters, or approximately 18 feet, and is constructed from aluminum tubing. It operates as a non-resonant vertical, requiring an external antenna tuner for impedance matching across its intended operating frequencies. The antenna's design incorporates a 1:4 UNUN at its base, facilitating a nominal 50-ohm feed point impedance for the coaxial cable. Performance observations indicate effective operation on 40 meters, 20 meters, 15 meters, and 10 meters, with reduced efficiency on 80 meters and 160 meters due to its relatively short electrical length for these lower bands. Comparative analysis with a G5RV dipole and a half-wave end-fed antenna reveals the X80 offers a lower take-off angle, beneficial for DX contacts, particularly on the higher HF bands. Field tests conducted with an Icom IC-706MKIIG transceiver and an LDG AT-100ProII autotuner demonstrate the X80's ability to achieve acceptable SWR across 80m through 10m. The antenna's compact footprint and ease of deployment make it suitable for restricted spaces or portable operations, though its performance on 80 meters is noted as a compromise compared to full-size resonant antennas.

Designing and constructing portable wire antennas for HF operations, this resource explores several configurations including the _foldback dipole_ for space-constrained setups and an inductively shortened dual-band dipole for 20m and 40m. It details the calculation of inductance for shortened elements, providing a Visual Basic 6.0 program screenshot that illustrates determining coil parameters like turns and length for a **25.5 uH** inductor. The document emphasizes practical considerations such as adjusting wire lengths for optimal SWR, noting that a dual-band dipole achieved SWR below 2:1 on both 20m and 40m, with careful adjustment bringing it under 1.5:1. Further, the resource describes a half-wave antenna matched with a coaxial stub, a method often referred to as the _Fuchskreis_ in German amateur radio circles, to transform the high feedpoint impedance to 50 Ohms. This monoband solution, for a 20m application, uses a stub length of **2.98m** (0.216 lambda multiplied by coax velocity factor) and a shorted stub of approximately 48cm. The coaxial stub design is highlighted for its resilience to ground proximity, allowing it to be rolled up or laid on the ground with minimal SWR impact, making it highly suitable for portable QRP operations.

Antenna tuners are crucial for matching the impedance of antennas to the 50 ohm output impedance of transmitters. The _LDG Z-11 Pro_ is an automatic antenna tuner designed to handle up to 125 watts, making it suitable for a wide range of amateur radio applications. Its compact form factor allows it to pair well with transceivers like the _FT-857D_, providing a portable solution for operators who frequently change locations or setups. The tuner covers the 80 through 6 meter bands, offering a broad impedance match capability. Although it struggles with some loads, it performs well with typical ham antennas, even managing to load an 80 meter dipole on 6 meters. One of the standout features of the _Z-11 Pro_ is its 8000 memory slots, which enable it to remember successful matches and quickly retune when revisiting frequencies. This memory function significantly reduces tuning time, often to less than half a second. The unit is well-constructed, with improved pushbuttons and a sturdy metal case that offers good shielding. However, users should be aware of potential RFI issues and the lack of a power switch, which requires disconnecting the power cord to turn off the unit completely. Overall, the _LDG Z-11 Pro_ is a user-friendly and cost-effective tuner, offering advanced features that enhance its utility in various amateur radio setups.

Ten essential tips and truisms for understanding HF antenna: Non-resonant wire dipole antennas fed with open-wire line and an antenna tuner can function effectively as multiband antennas, as detailed in "The Classic Multiband Dipole Antenna" by WB8IMY in March 2004 QST. Coaxial cable, unlike balanced parallel-wire feed lines, can cause RF to travel on the outer shield braid, leading to RF feedback to the station; a 1:1 balun at the dipole center can mitigate this by isolating the unbalanced coaxial feed line. Antenna gain is achieved by shaping and directing RF energy, with beam antennas concentrating power in a specific direction, and wire antennas also exhibiting shaped radiation patterns. An antenna tuner's primary role is to match the transceiver's 50-ohm output to the antenna system's impedance, allowing modern transceivers to deliver full power. Wire antennas do not always require center feeding; end-fed long wires or off-center-fed dipoles (like the Windom) can be used, though they often necessitate an antenna tuner and a counterpoise or radial network. Dipole antennas do not need to be perfectly horizontal; their legs can be bent or inclined, which affects feed point impedance and may require SWR experimentation with coaxial feed. Vertical antennas shorter than a half wavelength require an efficient ground system, typically comprising elevated or buried radial wires, with more radials generally leading to better efficiency. A 1:1 SWR indicates an impedance match but does not guarantee antenna efficiency; an inefficient vertical antenna with a poor ground system can show a low SWR while wasting most RF as heat. Investing in high-quality, low-loss feed line, especially coaxial cable, is crucial for maximizing RF signal transfer and overall antenna system performance.

The **136kHz Vertical Antenna** at G3YMC employs a Butternut HF2V structure, standing 10m tall. It integrates a 6.5mH loading coil to achieve resonance, with a matching transformer for impedance adjustment. The antenna's configuration includes top loading via a 12m horizontal wire, enhancing capacitive impedance. Initial measurements indicated a high impedance of around 300 ohms, necessitating a transformer for a 50-ohm match. Despite challenges with ground losses, the vertical antenna has shown improved performance in specific directions, filling nulls present in the previous loop antenna setup. The tuning remains broad, with variations due to environmental factors affecting the matching. Ongoing adjustments and comparisons with the loop antenna will continue to refine its effectiveness.
