Examines the operational differences between **quad** and **Yagi** antenna designs, focusing on their respective performance characteristics for amateur radio applications. The document highlights key metrics such as forward gain, front-to-back ratio, and bandwidth, which are crucial for effective DXing and contesting. It discusses how element configuration, boom length, and material choices impact the efficiency and radiation patterns of each antenna type across various HF bands. Practical considerations for antenna builders are addressed, including structural integrity, wind loading, and overall weight, particularly when using fiberglass spreaders for quads. The resource also covers precipitation static reduction in quads due to their closed-loop design and their ability to operate efficiently at lower elevations compared to Yagis. It provides insights into dual-polarization feed systems for quads, offering independent vertical and horizontal feed points for enhanced operational flexibility.

Presents the KE4UYP linear-loaded vertical antenna design, which introduces very little loss on 80 or 160 meters, achieving an overall radiation efficiency of 80% to 85%. This design addresses common pitfalls of traditional base-fed verticals by placing the majority of the current at the top of the antenna, eliminating the heavy reliance on extensive ground radial systems. The author's initial 10-meter model, only three feet tall, yielded 5/9 signal reports to Anchorage, AK, and Europe, confirming its effectiveness. The antenna incorporates both vertically and horizontally polarized radiators, with a 1/4 wavelength horizontal counterpoise located at the feed-point, near the top, to create an almost totally omnidirectional pattern with high wave angle horizontally polarized radiation. This dual polarization ensures even illumination across all take-off angles, making it effective for both local contacts and **DXing**. The vertical element is linear loaded, adding capacitance reactance and making it longer than the horizontal element to achieve resonance and raise the feed-point impedance to 50 ohms. Fine-tuning the antenna requires careful adjustment, as tower reactance can vary. The article suggests starting with 80 feet for 80m and 170 feet for 160m for the vertical wire, then trimming for resonance. Bandwidth specifications include 300 kHz under 2:1 **SWR** on 80m and 100 kHz on 160m when suspended between trees, or 150 kHz on 80m when side-mounted on a tower.

The Flower Pot Antenna project details a portable dual-band antenna primarily operating on 10 meters, with secondary resonance near the 30-meter band. Construction involves winding RG58 coaxial cable uniformly around a large plastic flower pot, approximately 70cm high with a 60cm top diameter. The design eliminates the need for radials, contributing to its compact and lightweight nature. Key construction steps include soldering the inner conductor to the shield at one end of the wound cable and connecting the wound cable's shield to the rig cable's inner conductor at the base. An LC network, comprising a variable capacitor (0-200pF) and an inductor (10 coils, 5cm diameter, 2mm wire), is inserted between the wound cable's inner conductor and the rig cable's shield. Tuning is performed with an antenna analyzer, adjusting cable length and the variable capacitor for optimal impedance on 10 meters. The antenna performs effectively when installed horizontally.

A minimum screen resolution of 800 x 600 is supported, with 1024 x 768 recommended for optimal usability.

Restoring vintage amateur radio gear often presents challenges with accurate dial calibration due to the non-linear characteristics of analog tuning capacitors. This resource details the construction of a 100 kHz crystal calibrator, a crucial tool for precisely setting the frequency of older rigs lacking digital readouts. The design cleverly circumvents the scarcity and cost of 100 kHz crystals by utilizing a readily available 8 MHz microprocessor crystal, such as a _HC49U_ type, in conjunction with common _CMOS ICs_ like the 74HCT00 quad NAND gate and 74HCT393 dual 4-bit binary ripple counter. The circuit employs a two-stage frequency division process: the 8 MHz crystal oscillator output is first divided by 16 to yield 500 kHz, then further divided by 5 to achieve the desired 100 kHz output. A 5.1-volt Zener diode, _1N4733A_, regulates the power supply for the HCT series logic. The article also provides a modification to produce a 50 kHz calibrator by altering the counter reset logic. Installation involves feeding the output to the receiver front end, ensuring it's post-TR relay to prevent RF damage, and incorporating an ON/OFF switch for the 12V supply line.

A 37.6-meter Morgain antenna design provides dual-band operation on 80 and 160 meters without traps. The antenna uses 1.5 mm² stranded copper wire with vinyl insulation, commonly found as domestic electrical wire. Tuning involves adjusting lateral jumper wires for the 80-meter band, with initial positions 30 cm from the arm ends, yielding 3635–3715 kHz resonance with SWR below 1.5:1. For 160 meters, a straight wire length of 18.80 meters per arm is critical, achieving 1840–1850 kHz resonance with SWR below 1.1:1. The Morgain antenna exhibits a 50-ohm feed-point impedance, allowing direct connection of 50-ohm coaxial cable like RG-8X, which handles approximately 500 watts. Spacers and the central plate are constructed from 1 mm thick green fiberglass laminate, with spacers measuring 11 cm and installed every 1.90 meters. The central plate is 11 × 11 cm, designed to secure the coaxial cable mechanically. End supports utilize 3–6 mm thick bakelite terminal spacers, tensioned with nylon ropes.

OPCLOG provides a straightforward logging solution for amateur radio operators, enabling the systematic recording of contacts. The software primarily focuses on basic QSO management, allowing users to input essential contact details such as callsign, date, time, frequency, and mode. Its core utility lies in its ability to export log data in the _ADIF_ (Amateur Data Interchange Format) standard, which is crucial for interoperability with other ham radio applications and services. This ADIF export functionality facilitates the creation of personalized QSL cards, streamlining the process for operators who prefer custom designs over generic templates. The program's design emphasizes ease of use for individual station logging, rather than complex contest or DXpedition management. It offers a practical tool for maintaining a personal logbook, supporting the fundamental requirements for tracking contacts and preparing for awards. The software's simplicity ensures a low learning curve, making it accessible for operators focused on routine logging tasks.

Designing and constructing portable wire antennas for HF operations, this resource explores several configurations including the _foldback dipole_ for space-constrained setups and an inductively shortened dual-band dipole for 20m and 40m. It details the calculation of inductance for shortened elements, providing a Visual Basic 6.0 program screenshot that illustrates determining coil parameters like turns and length for a **25.5 uH** inductor. The document emphasizes practical considerations such as adjusting wire lengths for optimal SWR, noting that a dual-band dipole achieved SWR below 2:1 on both 20m and 40m, with careful adjustment bringing it under 1.5:1. Further, the resource describes a half-wave antenna matched with a coaxial stub, a method often referred to as the _Fuchskreis_ in German amateur radio circles, to transform the high feedpoint impedance to 50 Ohms. This monoband solution, for a 20m application, uses a stub length of **2.98m** (0.216 lambda multiplied by coax velocity factor) and a shorted stub of approximately 48cm. The coaxial stub design is highlighted for its resilience to ground proximity, allowing it to be rolled up or laid on the ground with minimal SWR impact, making it highly suitable for portable QRP operations.
