The design incorporates a ferrite bead choke balun at the feedpoint to mitigate common-mode current and reduce shack noise, a critical consideration for urban or apartment-based operations.

RFI Kit, ferrite cores, baluns, loop antennas, antenna tuners and various accessories

One common challenge in antenna systems is mitigating common-mode current on the feedline, which can distort radiation patterns and introduce RF in the shack. This project details a 1:1 balun design that ingeniously avoids traditional ferrite beads, often a costly component, by substituting them with steel wool. The steel wool, when integrated into the balun's construction, effectively attenuates unwanted RF on the outer braid of the coaxial cable, ensuring that the antenna radiates efficiently and as intended. The construction involves winding coaxial cable through a PVC former, with the steel wool strategically placed to provide the necessary common-mode impedance. This method offers a practical and economical alternative for hams looking to build effective baluns without the expense or availability issues associated with ferrite cores. The design principles focus on creating a balanced feed to the antenna, crucial for optimal performance of dipoles and other balanced radiators. Experimentation with such designs can lead to improved field results, particularly for those operating with limited budgets or seeking innovative solutions for their antenna systems. The simplicity of using readily available materials like steel wool makes this a compelling build for many radio amateurs.

The practical application section guides the builder through tuning the antenna using an antenna analyzer, emphasizing the iterative process of spacing secondary windings and trimming the coax capacitor to achieve resonance at the desired band frequency. It highlights the antenna's low angle of radiation, beneficial for DX, and claims up to 2 S-points improvement over a _G5RV_ or similar doublet when used as an omnidirectional vertical. A comprehensive shopping list, including specific part numbers from _Rapid Electronics_, is provided, along with advice on selecting fiberglass fishing poles for support and suitable antenna wire.

Constructing a Lindenblad antenna for 137MHz NOAA satellite reception involves specific design considerations for optimal performance. The resource details the use of 4mm galvanised steel fencing wire, 300-ohm television ribbon cable, and wood/plastic components for the antenna structure. Key dimensions for a 137.58MHz-resonant antenna are provided, derived from the ARRL Satellite Handbook, specifying s, l, w, and d as 42, 926, 893, and 654mm respectively. The antenna is designed for Right Hand Circularly Polarised (RHCP) signals, requiring the four folded dipole elements to be tilted clockwise by 30 degrees. A significant aspect covered is impedance matching between the antenna's 75-ohm impedance and a typical 50-ohm receiver input. A twelfth-wave matching transformer, constructed from 117mm sections of 50-ohm RG-58 and 75-ohm RG-59 coax with a 0.66 velocity factor, is described. The article also addresses coaxial cable and connector selection, recommending 75-ohm Type-N connectors for RG-6 cable in professional setups and F56/F59 connectors for general use, while strongly advising against PL-259/SO-259 connectors for VHF. Strategies for mitigating Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) are discussed, including antenna placement to shield from local TV transmitters and the use of commercial or DIY band-pass filters, such as cavity resonators or helical notch filters, along with ferrite chokes on coaxial cables. Antenna orientation is explored, noting the Lindenblad's 'cone of silence' directly overhead and its maximized sensitivity towards the horizon. An experimental vertical tilt of 90 degrees is presented as a method to improve overhead reception and reduce interference from strong horizontal signals, particularly relevant in high RFI environments like the Siding Spring Observatory site.

A very compact receive antenna made with ferrite bars by PA0FBK

The QRP choke balun described utilizes a high permeability ferrite rod and RG-174 coax, aiming to present high impedance to common-mode currents across the HF spectrum. The construction involves winding as many turns of RG-174 as possible around the ferrite rod, then encapsulating the assembly with hot glue. This design prioritizes maximizing inductance to suppress unwanted shield currents, particularly in unbalanced antenna configurations. While the balun's effectiveness is subjectively reported as good, a potential design consideration involves the dielectric properties of the hot glue. This material could increase turn-to-turn capacitance, potentially reducing the balun's performance at higher HF frequencies, though this specific aspect has not been formally tested by the author, _AA5TB_. The project serves as an illustrative example of a practical, junk-box construction rather than a rigorously engineered solution. Photographs detail the evolution of the balun, from the initial winding process to its integration within a _B&W dipole center insulator_ and final camouflaged assembly.

Operating a ZS6BKW antenna often involves understanding its lineage from the _G5RV_ design, with specific modifications by ZS6BKW to optimize performance on several bands. Through computational analysis and field measurements, the antenna's dimensions were refined to allow operation on 10, 12, 17, 20, and 40 meters without an antenna tuner. For 80, 30, and 15 meters, a tuner is necessary, though efficiency on 30 and 15 meters is noted as not particularly high. The physical configuration consists of two 13.755-meter radiating elements fed by a 12.20-meter section of 450-ohm ladder line. Tuning the antenna on the 20-meter band is critical, and any deviation in the ladder line's characteristic impedance necessitates recalculating the element lengths. The design is also referenced in the 12th edition of _Rothammel's Antennenbuch_, page 219. Proper common mode current suppression is crucial at the transition from ladder line to coaxial cable. This can be achieved with a common mode choke, such as several turns of coax wound into a coil or over a ferrite toroid like an Amidon T130. While a 1:1 balun is an option, it may introduce issues.

The antenna consists of two 30-foot sections of 4-inch tubing and one 30-foot section of 2-inch tubing, stacked with the smaller diameter at the top. The electrical design incorporates PVC "condulet" boxes at the 30-foot and 60-foot points, housing relays to change the effective height for multi-band operation on 160, 80, 40, and 30 meters. Ferrite rod inductive chokes are used for DC control and to tune out gap capacitance. The antenna is fed with 1000 feet of open wire line, connected to a matching transformer comprising stacked toroids and a coaxial/toroidal balun. Grounding is achieved with a 3x3 foot grid of 16-gauge tinned copper wires with soldered crossovers.

It presents empirical formulas for calculating element lengths, considering the velocity factor of common wire types, and provides a detailed example for a 20m (14.175 MHz) version. The article includes a comprehensive table of dimensions and allowances for a five-band (20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m) mini-delta beam, along with construction hints for the central support and balun. It specifies a 1:1 trifilar balun wound on a ferrite rod and describes the antenna adjustment process using an _MFJ-259B Antenna Analyser_. Initial test results indicate an SWR of 1:1 at resonance and a bandwidth of approximately 240 kHz on 20m, even at a low height of five feet above ground. The distinctive utility lies in its focus on a practical, easily deployable beam antenna for portable DXing, offering a viable alternative to more complex or larger arrays.

The resource details the physical dimensions, including a 4-meter circumference, and calculates the theoretical inductance at approximately _6.4 uH_. It outlines a method for determining resonant frequencies across the 4-17 MHz range using a _C Jig_ and a _VR-500 receiver_, coupling the loop with a ferrite ring. The article also discusses the impact of receiver coupling on the loop's Q factor, noting a degradation in sharpness due to the transformer's reflected impedance. Analyzes the observed resonant frequency patterns, highlighting an unexpected rise in the loop's effective inductance at higher frequencies, particularly above 13 MHz. While some increase is attributed to distributed capacitance, the rate of rise suggests further investigation. The experimental setup provides practical insights into the challenges of maintaining high Q in simple receiving loops and offers a comparative reference for other homebrew antenna projects, such as those by _VK2TPM_.

Optimizing a G5RV or ZS6BKW multiband wire antenna for HF operation often involves addressing common SWR issues and understanding feedline characteristics. This resource chronicles the construction and performance evaluation of a G5RV, initially built for 80m, 40m, 15m, and 10m bands, by a newly licensed Foundation operator. The author details the selection of materials, including 3.5 mm stainless steel wire for the doublet arms and enameled copper wire for the open-wire feeder, and the initial decision to omit a balun based on common online information. The narrative highlights the initial disappointing performance, characterized by high receive noise and poor signal reports on 80 meters, despite the transceiver's internal ATU achieving a 1:1 match. This led to experimentation with a coax current balun and further research into G5RV myths, such as SWR claims and the necessity of a balun. The author then describes modifying the antenna to the ZS6BKW configuration, which involves specific changes to the doublet and feedline lengths, and integrating a 1:1 current balun wound on a ferrite toroid. The modifications resulted in improved reception and transmit performance across the bands.

Theory of the ferrite rod antenna

The collinear antenna, or Marconi-Franklin antenna, is an omnidirectional, high-gain antenna composed of in-phase half-wave dipoles aligned vertically. By using quarter-wave transmission line segments, it maximizes gain at a low horizon angle, outperforming a half-wave dipole. Adding segments increases gain but narrows bandwidth. A popular DIY version, the CoCo antenna, uses half-wave coaxial cable segments connected by non-radiating transmission lines. Built with stable velocity factor cables, a matching quarter-wave sleeve balun, and ferrite rings for attenuation, the antenna achieves performance comparable to commercial models.

The _Sci.Electronics FAQ: Repair: RFI/EMI Info_ document, authored by Daniel 9V1ZV, provides a detailed analysis of computer-generated RFI/EMI, focusing on its impact on radio reception. It identifies common RFI sources such as CPU clock rates (e.g., 4.77 MHz to 80 MHz), video card oscillators (e.g., 14.316 MHz), and even keyboard microprocessors, all of which generate square-wave harmonics across HF and L-VHF regions. The resource outlines a systematic procedure for pinpointing RFI origins, including disconnecting peripherals and using a portable AM/SW receiver with a ferrite rod antenna to localize strong interference sources. The document categorizes RFI mitigation into shielding, filtering, and design problems, offering practical solutions for each. It recommends applying conductive sprays like _EMI-LAC_ or _EMV-LACK_ to plastic casings of radios, monitors, and CPUs to create effective Faraday cages, emphasizing proper grounding and avoiding short circuits. For filtering, the guide suggests using line filters, ferrite beads, and toroids on power and data lines, and small value capacitors (e.g., 0.01 uF for serial/parallel, 100 pF for video) to shunt RFI to ground. It also discusses the use of bandpass, high-pass, low-pass, and notch filters on the receiver front-end or antenna feed to combat specific in-band noise.

Operating a ham station often involves encountering radio frequency interference (RFI), RF feedback, or RF burns, which are frequently misattributed to poor equipment grounding. This resource meticulously dissects these assumptions, asserting that RF grounds on the operating desk often merely mask more significant system flaws. It identifies five primary causes for RF problems, including antenna system design flaws, proximity of the antenna to the operating position, DC power supply ground loops, equipment design defects, and poorly installed connectors or defective cables. The content emphasizes that issues like "hot cabinets" or changes in SWR when connecting a ground indicate substantial RF flowing over wiring or cabinets, a phenomenon known as common-mode current. The article provides detailed explanations of common-mode current generation, particularly from single-wire fed antennas like longwires, random wires, and OCF dipoles, which inherently present high levels of RF in the shack. It also illustrates how vertical antennas, lacking a perfect ground system, can excite feed lines with significant common-mode current. Through simulations, the author demonstrates how a dipole without a proper _balun_ can cause RF problems at the operating desk, showing current patterns and voltage distributions on feed line shields. The discussion extends to the proper application of _RF isolators_ and _ferrite beads_, clarifying their role in modifying common-mode impedance on cable shields and cautioning against their use as a band-aid for fundamental system defects. The resource advocates for correcting the actual source of RF problems, such as antenna system issues or poor connector mounting, rather than relying on internal shack grounding or isolators. It highlights that properly functioning two-conductor feed lines, like coaxial or open-wire lines, should result in minimal RF levels at the operating position, even without a desk RF ground. The author shares personal experience, noting that his stations since the late 1970s have operated without RF grounds at the desks, relying instead on proper antenna system design and feed line integrity.

Low-frequency (LF) radio time signals, operating primarily in the 40–80 kHz range, are broadcast by national physics laboratories for precise clock synchronization. Transmitters like **JJY** (40 kHz, 50 kW; 60 kHz, 50 kW), RTZ (50 kHz, 10 kW ERP), MSF (60 kHz, 15 kW ERP), WWVB (60 kHz, 50 kW ERP), RBU (66.66 kHz, 10 kW), and DCF77 (77.5 kHz, 50 kW) cover vast geographic areas, often several hundred to thousands of kilometers. LF signals offer distinct propagation advantages over higher-band transmissions such as GPS. Their long wavelengths (3–6 km) enable effective diffraction around obstacles like mountains and buildings. The ionosphere and ground act as a waveguide, eliminating the need for line-of-sight and allowing a single powerful station to cover extensive regions. Ground wave propagation minimizes ionospheric variability effects on transmission delay, and signals penetrate most building walls effectively. Robust and low-cost receivers, often priced at 20–30 USD/EUR, are widely used in radio clocks. These receivers typically comprise a tuned ferrite core antenna, a receiver IC (e.g., Atmel T4227, U4223B, MAS1016) for amplification and AM detection, and a microcontroller for decoding the time signal and phase-locking a local clock. Specific components for DCF77, MSF, and WWVB are readily available from vendors like HKW Elektronik and Ultralink.

This comprehensive three-part guide examines baluns (balanced-to-unbalanced devices) and their critical role in ham radio antenna systems. The author explains how baluns prevent common-mode currents on feedlines, which can distort radiation patterns and cause unwanted RF in the shack. Various balun types are analyzed, including coiled coax chokes, ferrite-core designs (W2DU), and toroidal-wound versions (Guanella/Ruthroff). Construction techniques for 1:1, 4:1, 6:1, and 9:1 current baluns are provided with practical guidance on wire selection, winding methods, and ferrite core properties. The article emphasizes that proper balun implementation is essential for optimal antenna performance, especially with directional arrays.

Chokes and isolation transformers are essential for receiving antennas to mitigate common mode current, which induces noise and interferes with signal quality. Common mode chokes, formed by winding feedline through ferrite cores, block unwanted current effectively. Proper selection of core material and winding turns ensures resonance near the operating frequency, reducing interference. Isolation transformers further minimize interference, crucial for multi-transmitter stations.

A 20-turn, 0.8-meter square loop antenna with 500 uH inductance is detailed, connected via 2 meters of figure 8 flex cable. The converter offers three selectable frequency bands: 195-490 kHz, 150-220 kHz (including the New Zealand amateur band), and 128-160 kHz (covering the European amateur band). Performance measurements indicate an effective 3dB bandwidth of approximately 100 to 200 hertz at 200 kHz. The article provides insights into component selection, including an _LF353_ op-amp and a trifilar wound transformer on a ferrite core. Sensitivity figures are presented, showing 7.5 uV of converted output per 1 uV/meter signal strength into a 50-ohm load, or 37.5 uV into an _FRG7_ receiver, highlighting its capability to extract weak signals from noise.

Hams can be annoyed by noise from PoE cameras and access points. These devices and their long cables act like antennas, picking up and spreading unwanted radio signals. By wrapping ferrites around the cable will reduce this noise. It won't silence it completely, but it can make a big difference.
