The Icom IC-7300 is a popular SDR transceiver known for its excellent performance in ham bands. However, users have reported issues with reception reliability outside these bands due to ADC aliasing. This phenomenon occurs when the sampling rate of the radio interacts with frequencies outside the intended range, leading to unwanted signals being received. For instance, when tuned between 30 to 36 MHz, users may inadvertently pick up WFM broadcast signals or PMR communications due to aliasing effects. This guide outlines modifications to improve the IC-7300's performance by addressing the low-pass filter design, which is crucial for reducing interference from these unwanted signals. The proposed modifications involve adjusting the low-pass filter on the PA unit to better attenuate frequencies that cause aliasing. Measurements indicate that the original filter design allows significant signal leakage, leading to false receptions. By implementing the suggested changes, users can achieve a notable reduction in unwanted signals, enhancing the overall functionality of the IC-7300. While the modification requires careful soldering, the benefits in performance make it a worthwhile endeavor for serious operators looking to optimize their SDR experience.

DL7JV shares his practical experience building and testing capacitive antennas, initially skeptical of their performance compared to magnetic loops and mono-band dipoles. His interest was piqued after hearing a Spanish station running 100 Watts on 80 meters with a 1-meter Micro Vert, making DX contacts into PY and UA0, despite the antenna being only 4 meters high in a garden. This prompted DL7JV to investigate further, consulting resources from DL7PE and DL7AHW, the latter providing DOS programs like "Mitspule.exe" and "Spulenprg.zip" for calculating antenna dimensions and coil conversions. The article outlines the construction of two prototype antennas: one for 7.050 MHz using a 75mm PVC pipe and another for 3.550 MHz with a 110mm PVC pipe. Both designs feature aluminum foil condensers and coils wound from 1mm² H07V-K wire. DL7JV provides specific measurements for the condenser capacitance, surface area, diameter, height, coil inductance, turns, and wire length for both 40m and 80m versions, along with RG58 feedline lengths. Initial reception tests for the 7 MHz antenna, placed indoors, yielded impressive S9+5 signals from a German station compared to an S8 from a 42-meter roof-mounted loop, even hearing a Japanese station. Transmission attempts on April 4, 2004, despite moderate solar storm conditions, resulted in successful QSOs on 7 MHz with EA5OT (579/559) and on 3.5 MHz with YT1NT (579/559) and G4KKI (579/559) using 100 Watts. DL7JV notes the antenna's sensitivity to coordination and feedline layout, suggesting a modification from DL7AXO involving a 500pF fixed capacitor and coil tap for improved SWR stability. He concludes that while the capacitive antenna is space-saving and performs well for reception and 100W transmission indoors, its transmit performance doesn't yet match larger antennas, with further outdoor field tests planned. DL7JV also intends to build a 1.8 MHz version.

Chavdar Levkov, LZ1AQ, presents an experimental comparison of small wideband magnetic loops, building on his previous work on wideband active small magnetic loop antennas. His research focuses on increasing loop sensitivity by maximizing the short-circuit current, which is directly tied to the "loop factor" M = A/L, where A is the equivalent loop area and L is its inductance. Levkov's methodology involves reducing inductance and increasing area through parallel or coplanar crossed (CC) configurations, comparing these designs against a reference single quad loop of 1 m2 area. Experimental verification included testing three distinct loop types: a simple quad loop, two coplanar crossed (CC) loops, and eight parallel loops, all designed to have a total geometric area of 1 m2. Measurements were conducted at 1.8, 3.5, 7, and 10 MHz using a small transmitter 270 meters away, with a Perseus direct sampling receiver for precise signal level assessment. The results consistently showed that CC loops, particularly Loop 5 (two CC circular loops with 1.44 m2 total area), yielded significantly higher currents, up to 9.1 dB over the reference loop at 3.5 MHz, validating M as a reliable predictor of loop sensitivity. Numerical simulations using MMANA further corroborated the experimental findings, demonstrating an almost perfect correlation between the calculated M factor and the induced loop current for 15 different loop models. Levkov concludes that CC loops offer superior sensitivity for a given loop area, while parallel loops are advantageous for minimizing physical volume. Practical recommendations suggest using loops with an M factor greater than 0.5 uA/pT for quiet rural environments, and he provides a spreadsheet tool, WLoop_calc.xls, to aid in optimizing loop configurations for specific operational needs.

A common mode choke/balun, essential for mitigating common mode current on antenna feedlines, is detailed in this construction and measurement guide. It utilizes eight Fair-Rite #2643167851 Mix 43 ferrites housed within a Hammond 1598JSGYPBK plastic case, with RG-8X coax cable forming the windings. The document references design principles from Ian White, GM3SEK's article on cost-effective ferrite chokes. Specific construction details include the layout of three coils to minimize inter-coil coupling and methods for securing the ferrites with foam tape. The resource presents comprehensive measured data, including isolation impedance (magnitude, real, and imaginary components), Q factor, inductance, and phase angle across various frequencies. It also covers the choke/balun's coax frequency response and return loss characteristics. Techniques for measuring choking impedance are thoroughly explained, focusing on S21 transmission measurements with a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) and testing ferrite beads in both S11 and S21 modes. The guide describes a practical setup using an aluminum sheet or baking foil for measurements and outlines the calculation of series impedance from attenuation in a 50-ohm system. Additionally, it details a method for determining the balun's equivalent L and C around resonance by adding a parallel capacitor.

The W6PQL 23cm Beacon Project describes a **1296 MHz** beacon designed for microwave propagation studies and equipment testing, capable of 30 watts output. It utilizes a PIC 16F628A microcontroller to generate CW and FSK keying for a crystal oscillator, followed by a series of frequency doublers and triplers to reach the target frequency. The final power amplification stage employs a Mitsubishi M57762 module, providing a robust 10-watt RF output. The design emphasizes stability and reliability for continuous operation, with the microcontroller code, written in assembly, provided for customization of the beacon's callsign and message. Originally located in CM97am and aimed at 140 true, the beacon used four 4-foot Yagis stacked vertically for a total ERP of 3kW. The article includes schematics, parts lists, and construction notes to guide builders, along with antenna pattern measurements. Although the beacon itself is no longer in service as of August 2010, the detailed documentation remains a valuable reference for amateur radio operators interested in building similar **microwave** projects or understanding beacon operation.

This study analyzes the antenna pattern of the Utah Amateur Radio Club's 146.760 MHz repeater following antenna relocation in 1997. Noting degraded transmission toward the north, a customized signal mapping system using a Yaesu FT-817, GPS, and software was developed to log real-time signal data. Calibration techniques extended the radio's signal range, enabling precise field measurements. The method allowed continuous signal strength monitoring while driving, revealing anomalies in coverage likely due to tower modifications. Findings helped assess and visualize the antenna’s actual radiation pattern and highlighted environmental impact on signal distribution.

VE2AZX's 2013 Radio Talk presentation details the technical aspects of baluns, including reasons for their use, various types, and methods for performance verification using an SWR analyzer. The document specifically examines 1:1 voltage baluns and 4:1 voltage baluns, outlining their winding configurations and typical impedance transformations. It presents empirical SWR measurements for W2AU 1:1 baluns and Unadilla 4:1 baluns, tested with both 50-ohm and 200-ohm resistive loads across the HF spectrum. The presentation further explores the measurement of ferrite impedance and their application in mitigating common-mode currents on feeders and household conductors. Key concepts addressed include balanced-to-unbalanced transformation, ensuring feeder independence from the antenna, and reducing unwanted feeder radiation. The content emphasizes practical testing procedures to ensure optimal antenna system performance and minimize RF interference. Discussions also cover open-circuit tests with SWR analyzers and VNAs to assess winding inductance, distributed capacitance, and insulation quality. The presentation differentiates between voltage and current baluns, explaining how current baluns, particularly those utilizing ferrite cores, reduce outer shield currents without affecting internal coaxial cable currents, thereby preserving the antenna's intended radiation pattern.

This online construction guide details the assembly of a signal generator specifically for the **13cm band** (2.4 GHz). The curriculum focuses on the integration of a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO), specifically the ROS-2400, to produce a stable RF signal. The resource outlines the necessary components for frequency generation and output, including the use of a Mini-Circuits MMIC amplifier for signal conditioning. The construction protocol involves configuring the ROS-2400 VCO to operate within the 2.3 GHz to 2.45 GHz range, ensuring frequency coverage for amateur radio _microwave experimentation_. The guide specifies the output power level, approximately 70mW, directly from the MMIC stage, indicating its application as a low-power instrumentation source rather than a transmit-capable device. This project provides a practical example of constructing a dedicated test instrument for microwave frequency measurements and system alignment on the **13cm band**.
