The project details modifications to an ARK-40 QRP CW transceiver kit, specifically replacing its original thumbwheel frequency selectors with a **BASIC STAMP BS-II microcontroller** and an optical shaft encoder. The redesigned control circuitry outputs a BCD code to the ARK-40's synthesizer, enabling more convenient knob-type tuning. This modification significantly alters the user interface, moving from discrete frequency selection to continuous tuning. Operating frequency is presented on an LCD readout, offering two distinct display modes: a "bandspread dial" mode that simulates an analog dial scrolling across the display in 1 kHz increments, and a conventional digital readout with 100 Hz resolution. Pushing the main tuning knob toggles between these modes, providing both rapid band traversal and fine-tuning capabilities. The software for the BASIC Stamp is written in P-Basic, addressing the challenge of accurate analog dial simulation. Physical modifications include fabricating a custom PC Board for the STAMP, mounting it with an L-bracket to the optical encoder, and creating a new front panel. The front-mounted speaker was relocated to accommodate the new tuning knob and display, transforming the **ARK-40 transceiver** into a more user-friendly rig with its built-in CW keyer and 5 watts of power.

The KD1JV "Melt Solder" Digital QRP SWR/Power Meter operates across the 160m to 6m bands, featuring 9.9-watt and 990-milliwatt power scales, a peak hold mode for SSB, and a VSWR scale from 1:1 to 9.9:1. It utilizes a _Stockton directional coupler_ wound on a single binocular core and an _Atmel AVR ATtiny26L_ microcontroller for processing. The design incorporates _W7EL diode compensation_ in a non-inverting amplifier feedback loop to address diode voltage drop and non-linear behavior at low power levels, with software corrections applied for improved accuracy, particularly at QRP power levels up to 5 watts. Construction details include parts placement, transformer winding instructions for #26 magnet wire, and calibration procedures using a 1.5V alkaline battery or an oscilloscope with a 50-ohm dummy load. Packaging options are discussed for fitting the board into an Altoids tin or a deeper Whitman’s Sampler tin, with considerations for battery life extension by adding a third or fourth battery. Accuracy tests performed at 7 MHz compare readings against a True RMS power meter based on an _Analog Devices AD8361_ chip, showing typical deviations of 0-5% across various power levels.

With Scancorder you can record and replay audio from your scanner using your computer soundcard. The audio is recorded digitally as a wave file, so that even digital modes can be re-processed or analysed later.

Argo, developed by I2PHD and IK2CZL, functions as a specialized freeware viewer for various weak signal modes, specifically MTHELL, Slow CW, QRSS, and DFCW. It processes audio input to visualize and decode these extremely low-speed transmissions, which are often imperceptible to the human ear. The software's capabilities extend to EME (Earth-Moon-Earth) operations, where its sensitivity to weak signals is particularly advantageous for detecting faint lunar reflections. The application provides a visual representation of the received signals, allowing operators to discern patterns and decode information from signals buried deep within the noise floor. Its design focuses on extracting data from signals with very narrow bandwidths and long integration times, characteristic of QRSS and similar modes. This tool is distinctively useful for experimenters and DXers engaged in challenging weak signal communication, offering a dedicated platform for modes not typically supported by general-purpose digital mode software. Its specialized focus on _Slow CW_ and _MTHELL_ makes it a niche but effective utility for specific operating scenarios.

KaWin is a legacy digital RF data communications program designed to harness the full potential of Kantronics Terminal Node Controllers (TNCs) via their proprietary Host Mode. Serving as a central hub for the digital shack, it gave operators running packet radio or DX clusters a native graphical interface to seamlessly manage RF traffic across up to four simultaneous TNCs. The primary limitation today is extreme software obsolescence. KaWin is a completely unsupported, discontinued product running exclusively on legacy operating systems, peaking at Windows 95. Modern shacks cannot run it natively; it strictly demands antiquated hardware like physical RS-232 serial ports with 16550 UARTs, dedicated IRQ assignments to prevent RX/TX buffer overruns, and specific legacy TNC firmware EPROMs. Despite being a relic, its benefits for the dedicated digital DXer were substantial. By fully exploiting Kantronics Host Mode rather than basic KISS configurations, it maximized on-the-air throughput and station efficiency. For retro-computing hams restoring vintage packet stations, KaWin still provides a robust environment that successfully bridged raw RF data routing with a highly functional, multitasking graphical user interface.

The software facilitates weak signal decoding and transmission. It integrates with logging systems for QSO management and can automate tasks such as call management and remote RTX control. JTDX is utilized in contexts such as DXing and contests. DXZone Focus: FT8 | JT9 | Weak Signal | Multi-platform

The FreeDV project offers a suite of digital voice modes for HF radio, with its flagship mode being the Radio Autoencoder (RADE). This free GUI application for Windows, Linux, and macOS allows any SSB radio to be used for high-quality digital voice communications. The technology, including the Codec 2 speech codec, is 100% open source under the GNU Lesser Public License v2.1 and two-clause BSD license, fostering experimentation and innovation in amateur radio digital voice. Development is managed by a six-person Project Leadership Team and funded by an ARDC grant, with Software Freedom Conservancy as the financial sponsor. Controlled testing indicates that RADE technology performs comparably to SSB on both high and low SNR channels. The resource lists various FreeDV nets and activities, including a worldwide activity day, and specific nets in Argentina (7.045 MHz LSB), Australia (7.197 MHz LSB), the UK (3.640 MHz LSB, 5.3685 MHz USB), and the USA (7.181.5 MHz LSB, 7.177 MHz LSB). Support resources include a mailing list, Discord channels, and a Zoom channel. Documentation such as the FreeDV GUI User Manual and the SM1000 Manual are provided, alongside access to source code for RADE, FreeDV GUI, and Codec 2.

gMFSK, a Gnome Multimode HF Terminal, provides a comprehensive software solution for digital conversational modes on HF bands within Linux and Unix-like operating systems. The application facilitates sending and receiving various digital modes, including MFSK (MFSK16 and MFSK8), RTTY, THROB (1, 2, and 4 throbs/sec), PSK31 (BPSK and QPSK), PSK63, and MT63. It leverages the computer's soundcard for transceiver interfacing, performing all digital signal processing on the main CPU. The software features a multimode waterfall display incorporating waterfall, spectrum, and scope views, enabling _point-and-click tuning_ of decoded signals. Remote logging capabilities are supported via SysV IPC, with integration for logging applications like Xlog. PTT control is managed through serial or parallel port lines, and rig control is implemented using the _Hamlib_ library, allowing for real-time frequency display and transceiver manipulation. Fixtext macros can incorporate variables and command-line output. Distributed under the GNU General Public Licence, version 2, gMFSK requires Gnome libraries and FFTW 2.x libraries for operation, even without a full Gnome desktop environment.
