The antenna I built was inspired by a portable delta loop designed by Doug DeMaw, W1FB. Given that I constrained myself to a 50-foot roll of speak wire, I scaled my antenna for the 20M band. Using the formula, 1005 divided by the frequency in megahertz, I calculated a total length of 71 feet (21.6 meters) for the center of the 20M band.

A 3.5–24 MHz regenerative receiver for amateur bands was recently constructed, inspired by a 1934 design. The project was both challenging and rewarding, requiring precise tuning and high-quality components. The receiver successfully captured QSOs from across the globe, such as New Zealand communicating with Panama. The simplicity of the design and the satisfaction of building a functional, compact wooden box with handmade resonant circuits were highlights. This project demonstrates a meaningful way to reconnect with the roots of amateur radio.

Vertical antenna tests at the Sonten-Rancabali tea resort in Ciwidey, West Java. The assembly, led by Mr. Dian Kurniawan and the team, took just 20 minutes. Mrs. Mita performed the transmit check-in test, which was received across various regions in Indonesia, including Sulawesi, East Java, and Bangka Belitung. The team will release a video of the test soon and has thanked colleagues YB3HRY and YB0BAW for their reports.

ToyNTP is a simple freeware time server for Windows that implements the SNTP protocol and uses a GPS receiver, Garmin GPS 18x LVC, as time reference. ToyNTP was designed to be used with Faros in the locations where access to the SNTP servers on the Internet is not available, but it may be used for other purposes as well, in particular, it may be configured to keep the PC clock synchronized to a GPS receiver.

A rotatable 40-meter dipole antenna designed and constructed to fit within backyard constraints. Operating from Banana Island, Sierra Leone (AF-037), the 9L2019 DXpedition by F6KOP and a ten-operator team used the callsign 9LY1JM from January 9-21, 2019. This detailed report covers the logistical challenges, including securing visas and licenses with local assistance from Mark 9L1YXJ and Gregory of Dalton’s Guest House. The team deployed monoband quarter-wave verticals on the beach and two Beverage on Ground (BOG) antennas for Europe/Asia and the USA, operating four stations simultaneously. Technical hurdles encountered included high tides submerging antennas, requiring repositioning, and persistent QRM between closely spaced stations, mitigated by doubling filters. CW signal irregularities at 30-32 WPM were resolved by PC and WINTEST restarts. A significant FT8 logging bug was identified and corrected with on-site software. Despite these issues, the team logged over 4,000 QSOs in the first 24 hours, averaging 5,000 QSOs daily, with a peak of over 6,000 in one day. Propagation varied, with excellent 160m conditions on January 12 yielding over 750 QSOs, and a later four-hour opening pushing the 160m total past 1,600. High bands were challenging due to low solar activity, but mid-bands provided intense pileups and rapid continent-wide contacts. The DXpedition concluded with nearly 50,000 QSOs, including a successful school QSO with Collège Doisneau de Sarralbe (57), managed by F1ULQ and F6KFT.

This project introduces the Loggi, a hybrid antenna merging the wide frequency coverage of log-periodic dipole arrays (LPDA) with the high gain and front-to-back ratio (F/B) of Yagi antennas. Traditional LPDAs span broad frequencies with moderate gain and low VSWR, while Yagis provide high gain and F/B over narrow bands. By analyzing high-Tau LPDA designs, it was found they could nearly match the gain of VHF/UHF Yagis while maintaining excellent patterns, F/B, and front-to-rear ratios (F/R). Optimizing specific elements for target frequencies (e.g., 144.1 MHz) led to the Loggi, which uniquely features all driven elements without passive directors or reflectors. This design effectively functions as a narrowband optimized LPDA, with front elements acting like Yagi directors and rear elements like Yagi reflectors, thus enhancing gain and directional characteristics while retaining broad frequency versatility.

A DIY cantenna can extend your WiFi range by building a 2.4 GHz high-gain antenna using accessible materials. The design, based on waveguide principles, uses a cylindrical tube to capture WiFi signals and can even connect to access points half a mile away in ideal conditions. While the ideal tube diameter was hard to find, a 4-inch aluminum dryer vent was chosen despite theoretical limitations. The author describes his experience building and using a Beverage antenna for the 40-meter band. Despite encountering some challenges, the antenna offered some improvements in receiving stations compared to a 3-element inverted Vee antenna. The Beverage antenna showed a significant daytime signal-to-noise ratio improvement and received signals better than the Vee antenna. However, the front-to-back ratio was not ideal, and the transmit power seemed to affect the Beverage antenna. Overall, the author concludes that the Beverage antenna might be more suitable for locations with higher noise levels. The total cost of the antenna was around 30 Euros.

The Butternut HF2V, originally a two-band vertical antenna for 80m and 40m, was enhanced by the user to include 30m and 20m bands for better digimode DX work during the solar minimum. The additions used components adapted from the HF6V and innovative methods for the 20m addition, either through a parallel vertical element or a lower-mounted independent element, minimizing band interaction. A C-Pole Antenna for QRPxpeditions describes a DIY C-Pole antenna designed for QRP (low-power) expeditions, inspired by KF2YN’s ground-independent vertical model. After adjustments, it achieved a 1:1 SWR at 14.060 MHz, rising to 2.5:1 at 14.35 MHz. A choke balun, comprising 15 turns of RG8X around a 4†can, was essential for optimal performance. Compact and self-supporting, the antenna enables reliable communication with minimal setup. Contacts included stations across the U.S., and even a 4,600-mile connection to Spain using only 5 watts.

Putting one of those old modems back into use.AMTOR is an acronym for AMateur Teleprinting Over Radio and was mostly used on HF. The mode is based on the marine SITOR code that was introduced to amateur radio by Peter, G3PLX. The mode is an enhancement of RTTY with active error correction that copes reasonably well with interference and fading.

The recognition of telegraphy masked by noise at 40 and 80 signs/min telegraphy speed was studied in 10 normal-hearing subjects at different sound pressure levels (25-85 dB SPL in steps of 5 dB) as well as at different test frequencies (2000, 1000, 800, 630, 500 and 250 Hz). The ability to recognize the signs varied with varying SPL. Recognition for most of the subjects was best at an SPL close to 70 dB. All subjects improved their recognition as the frequency was lowered to 500 Hz, some even at 250 Hz. These facts should be taken into consideration when training telegraphy operators as well as in the construction of radio receivers to permit listening at low frequencies. Furthermore, the critical ratio was calculated at the different test frequencies.

A cost-effective alternative to the Optibeam OB10-3W, a high-performance but expensive tri-band Yagi antenna for the 20, 17, and 15-meter bands. The original Optibeam, featuring three full-size elements on each band, delivers strong forward gain and front-to-back ratio but comes with a high price tag. To address this, a custom design was developed, offering similar performance at a fraction of the cost. Using accessible materials and a simple 1:1 current balun, the homemade version proved highly effective, making it a practical solution.

In this article, the current consumption for a selection of popular HF transceiver was examined to determine, via an on the field comparison, whether they were right for portable operation. The radios evaluated include the Yaesu FT-857D, Kenwood TS-590SG, Icom IC-7100, and Kenwood TS-480SAT. The measurements were taken beginning frok 5W in 5W increments up to 100W. The results showed that the Kenwood TS-590SG had the highest current use while the Yaesu FT-857D had the lowest. The current consumption of all radios increased as the power output increased.

At the beginning it was a simple map that didn't work on a mobile phone. Later I added more features, better backend and frontend and other data sources such as POTA, SOTA etc.

**APRS TX I-Gate with APRX and the Universal Radio Controller** This project explores the creation of an APRS TX I-Gate to improve message delivery in amateur radio communications. Initial experiments involved configuring a picoAPRS v4 and later a G1LRO Universal Radio Controller (URC) with a Quansheng UV-K5 as digipeaters. While both setups successfully retransmitted signals, they failed to receive incoming APRS messages. To address this, a Raspberry Pi Zero running Debian and APRX-2.9 was repurposed to provide network connectivity, transforming the URC into an effective TX I-Gate for seamless APRS message handling.

With increased ES propagation, this lightweight 5-element LFA antenna offers enhanced performance over the Bigwheel antenna's 5dBi gain, delivering approximately 11dBi and forward gain. Designed from G0KSC’s specifications, the 1.8m antenna was adapted for reduced weight using 6mm and 4mm rods instead of heavier tubes. 3D-printed PETG clamps ensure durability and precision, while the first tests showed excellent SWR and element coupling. Though built with a temporary Choke BalUn, the results were promising, with a Pawsey Stub BalUn planned next for further optimization.
